5 out of 5 stars Elegance and precision.......2007-06-30

The theramin is, without question, the most difficult instrument in the world to play. Consider: since its invention in 1928 and commercial release in the early 1930s, only one musician - Clara Rockmore - has been able to produce any real music on it. Her performances are spellbinding and, if one sometimes years for, say, a whole sonata or something more substantial than encore pieces, think of how difficult it is to play ANYTHING on this instrument and be glad that we at least have this much.

A one-of-a-kind disc of a one-of-a-kind performer. If you like the samples you can hear on this site. by all means buy it.

Don't know why this is here as I never purchased this item.

3 out of 5 stars Mysterious, magical, and a little bit maudlin.......2007-03-08

I recently went through a theremin phase after seeing the documetary "Theremin: An Electronic Oddysey" which featured Clara Rockmore prominently. That led me to buy this recording, which seems to be the traditional standard of classical theremin artistry. The story around the instrument is even more bizzare than the music it makes: spooky Cold-War intrigue, sudden disappearances in New York and the USSR, spy gadgets, dead men found alive, old friends reuniting after decades of separation and obscurity... it all fits the eerie ethos of the music. So to really "get" the instrument, you need to know the story behind it. That's the maudlin part.

While the rest of my family violently disagrees, this is indeed lovely music. A careful listening to Mrs. Rockmore's technique reveals, I think, that she's fascinatingly far beyond waving her hands up and down in front of antennas. She makes glissandos and runs happen with discrete pitches in a way that is hard for me to picture on an instrument that can generate any pitch, and every pitch in between. She developed a way to "finger" an instrument you don't touch. That's why it's magical.

A note on the recording: the timbre of the theremin seems to land in a resonant frequency range on most systems/speakers on which I have listened to this recording, leading to the solo instrument badly overbalancing the piano accompaniment.

PS: I have given on someday owning a theremin. Phase over.

4 out of 5 stars Hypnotically Beautiful.......2007-02-28

Classical music, and specifically Theremin music, is not normally my favored listening. But I took a chance on this disc and am very glad I did. Clara Rockmore's mastery of her instrument is astonishing. The music is tastefully chosen and very beautiful. She often mimics violin or human voice in her phrasing, but subtly gives the theremin its own voice and proves its suitability for classical.

I knocked a star off for the lack of arrangement-diversity, but I have to admit that I usually listen to this disc from start to end. Its lyrical qualities are very transfixing and hypnotic. A welcome diversification to my music collection!

5 out of 5 stars THE ART OF THE THEREMIN.......2007-02-24

I HAVE HAD THIS CD FOR YEARS AND HAVE NEVER GOTTEN TIRED OF HEARING IT, ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE RIGHT MOOD TO REALLY APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ARE HEARING. THIS IS THE PREEMINENT THERMEIN RECORDING, BY THE PREEMINENT THEREMIN PERFORMER, CLARA ROCKMORE. HAUNTING, STRANGE, HYPNOTIC, YET MELODICAL, THE THERMEIN IS A VERY DIFFICULT INSTRUMENT TO PLAY, AND CLARA ROCKMORE WAS THE ONLY PERSON TO EVER REALLY "MASTER" IT. IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THEREMIN MUSIC, I GUESS THIS IS THE ONE CD YOU NEED TO GET.

3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

5 out of 5 stars Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

5 out of 5 stars You've never heard "The Godfather" like this.......2003-08-13

For me the highlight of this disc is a short suite from "Rocco and His Brothers," with some pungent accordion work and 1950's jazz influences. This is glorious and rarely performed music, and conductor Riccardo Muti and the fine La Scala musicians should be thanked for presenting it so beautifully. (The film itself, available on DVD, is one of Visconti's best and well worth seeking out.) But there isn't a stale moment anywhere.

The melancholy themes from "The Godfather" have probably never been played so well. The famous opening trumpet solo, combining loneliness and menace in equal parts, is beautifully done, as are the relatively upbeat selections from "8-1/2" and "La Dolce Vita." Throughout the production, it is marvelous to hear these scores played with such passion and commitment, and the La Scala musicians sound sweepingly involved.

But for many listeners the highlight will be the dazzling and haunting waltzes from "The Leopard," with their melodic arcs echoing the grand scale of Visconti's masterpiece. This is truly evocative film writing.

An excellent introduction to Rota's music, played with suave intensity by one of the best conductors in the world. (For those interested, Muti and La Scala recorded another Rota CD with additional dances from "The Leopard," as well as music from "La Strada" and the "Concerto for Strings" -- also highly recommended.)

5 out of 5 stars Italian Scala and Muti feels Rota!.......2001-07-25

Perhaps this is the most powerfull collection of film music of Nino Rota, and Muti knows and feel this music. Splendid perfomance and sound.

5 out of 5 stars Worth making room for. .......2007-07-23

Parsifal is a fantastic opera with mood, layers of tone and symbolic references to spare. Any recording of this epic opera is worth listening to. In the case of the newest DG release with Placido Domingo in the title role and Christian Thielemann conducting, this combination is enough to make it worth adding to your CD library. This live recording is not only a testimony to the professionalism of the two individuals listed above but to the entire cast, starting with the Placido Domingo who is terrific and who, once again, proves his place in opera history as our most versatile and gifted tenor. Even as late as the middle of Act III Mr. Domingo continues to sound strong and commanding in the role (again this is a live recording). He owns the role and, based on recent Parsifal's without him, I am not sure there is anybody around who is truly ready to take over (Hang in there Placido and sorry Ben). Christian Thielemann's reading of the score is wonderful, no big departures here, not too fast and not too slow but a well-balanced tempo throughout the entire recording. Where he excels is in the softer, tender moments of Act III; the Good Friday music specifically. Parsifal is a tone poem with multi-layered orchestral parts that seem to just illuminate and overlap while developing Wagner's most gifted talent. Waltraud Meier delivers her typical wonderful rendering of Kundry - no easy task, with all the characteristics needed: crazy in Act I, a seductress in Act II, and mute in Act III (though she never leaves the stage). Her Act II encounter with Parsifal was wonderful and convincing; her entrance and announcing of Parsifal draws one in and sets up the remainder of the Act. Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz was the only area where I took issue. I love the role of Gurnemanz and believe he carries some of the most important and, in some cases, beautiful singing in the opera; the voice must be just right. Here, I found the dramatic weight missing. By Act III I warmed up to his sound and `lyrical' rendition of the role but still wanted something deeper and with more command. All other roles, as well as the chorus, were exceptional. Be advised: this is a live recording so you will occasionally here stage noise, mostly swords clanking. As I mentioned this is a wonderful opera and this new release is worth making room for in your collection. [JG] A review from OperaOnline.us.

4 out of 5 stars Curiously Flat.......2007-03-30

I am listening to this one on XM radio over the internet. The performance is well sung and the orchestra sounds great, with wide and expansive sound. Domingo sounds like, well, Domingo, but Waltraut Meier as Kundry sounds very nasal. The other men sound fine.

But somehow, there is no passion in this performance. It moves along at the same methodical rate from beginning to end, with no tension in the dramatic moments, and no mystery in the spiritual ones.

Perfectly fine, but perfectly ordinary.

Ed Flaspoehler, Dallas, TX

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-08

I have to admit that I am pretty poor at writing reviews but was forced to by the simple lack of them for this recording. So please, don't expect a prose piece consisting of any deep or insightful analysis of this recording - such a thing is beyond someone who believes that music - especially Wagner's music - must be experienced and cannot be described in prose.

And so to the recording; simply this is an amazing interpretation of Parsifal and Thielemann is simply one of of Wagner's greatest interpreters. Heavy praise perhaps but I often feel while listening to his Wagner that this is how Furtwangler would have sounded given the recording mechanisms of the 21st century.

Parsifal is perhaps interpreted as Wagner's most directly "spiritual" works - infusing his interested in Christianity, Buddhism, the neopaganism of his time and - his version - of Schopenhauerian philosophy (this is Wagner after all and of course he felt that he could improve on Schopenhauer's thought. I often wonder what Schopenhauer's response would have been if Wagner had ever actually sent him the intended letter explaining how much he admired Schopenhauer's philosophy but that it could be improved if he only...?)and indeed, this is how the best Wagnerian interpretors perform it. However, the truth is that - in my opinion - it is normally T&S, as normally performed, that seems to project whatever feelings of "spiritually" or "transcendence" Wagner intended much more then Parsifal. However, here at last we have a Parsifal that manages to lift the listener to those heavy states that transcend the normal, everyday realm of existence.

This recording is incredible "cheap", for goodness sake, buy it and experience - honest Guv'.

5 out of 5 stars Radiant performance amid the clatter of stage noise.......2006-08-03

This new Parsial is a truly visionary performance by Christian Thielemann who never fails to amaze. His reading is both pointillist in his illumination of score's mosaic of tone colors and, at the same time, contrapuntally aware of the music's complex layers. The set's only drawback is the unusual amount of stage noise that not only has been allowed to exist, but has been weirdly amplified rather than digitally squelched. Perhaps DG's engineers wanted an "Amfortas Effect" by lancing this ethereal performance with a shaft of the palpably metallic. What are those sounds? (on-stage swords?, an hare Krishna procession? ). For Parsifal fans like me, who love to bathe in the grandeur of the bell-brass-timpani processions of Act I, the shock of hearing "kling soars," like so many pieces of fallen silverware, is irritating enough to retire the entire set on a first hearing. I've since gotten over this distraction, but it has taken time and patience. As to the singers, this set offers an unconventional package. Placido Domingo, in spite of his odd accent, is a heartfelt and satisfying Parsifal. Throughout the four hours, the other singers give a fresh perspective to the expected role casting. One never finds Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz tedious or terminally vatic. His varied and athletic voice has a light upper register and an affectingly rich lower one. Waltraud Meier's Kundry is also full of surprises. Unexpected tenderness, and, turning on a dime, hysteria. In all, one never thinks of this Parsifal as the sanctimonious German Easter Parade that one sometimes hears. Thielemann effectively revitalizes this work without sacrificing an ounce of it's rich beauty. Keep this set with your Knappertsbusch and your Boulez.

5 out of 5 stars Great conductor and star........2006-06-24

Beautiful, just like the same conductor's Tristan. Keep 'em coming DG. Want to hear Thielemann in Lohengrin, Tannhauser, the Dutchman etc. And I know it's expensive but some in the studio would be nice too.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of 19th/20th Century music.......2003-08-12

This is a great collection of works from 19th and 20th century women composers. Keep in mind, it is only a small sample of what's available, but an excellent place to start. It is also a good choice if you are a teacher wanting to introduce women composers to your class and do not want to invest in dozens of CDs. There are no large-scale works on this CD, so it is ideal as a sampler (or for use with kids in a classroom setting). I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars It's about Time!.......2001-12-07

A top-notch sampling of mainly 20th-century music by women composers, including Lili Boulanger and Pulitzer Prize-winners Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Shulamit Ran, this cd proves that the music has been excellent all along. What we have needed are good recordings of superior performances. The samples often are brief--e.g., a single movement from Clarke's cello sonata--yet do provide jumping off points for more concentrated pursuit of favorite composers. Those uninitiated in women's works will become familiar here with some of the best of the last 150 years: Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Thea Musgrave, and on and on. I hope every author of a text on music since 1840 will come to know and adore this cd, then include the music in their discussions of music history. It's about time!

5 out of 5 stars Ohhhld recording but excellent.......2004-09-09

These recordings date from 1937-47, Lipatti died in 1950. So they are of that era: somewhat boxy, muddy, and periodically oversaturated mono.

So if you were expecting modern quality you will be somewhat disappointed, but you can still hear everything quite well, and certainly evaluate the performances. Just imagine you're listening on one of those ancient phonographs with the big horn connected to the needle, and you will be thrilled.

As for the performances, I think everyone else has done a good job of describing them...they are sensational, and it is a pity this man didn't live long enough to have an adequate record of his genius. What remains is certainly worth appreciating.

5 out of 5 stars untitled.......2004-09-08

Lipatti was a great artist, especially when he played great music. This is great music.

5 out of 5 stars The Pianist's Pianist.......2003-07-29

Dinu Lipatti was perhaps the greatest pianist of the modern age. Such hyperbole is usually suspect in a review, and no doubt many will argue with it, but I find the recorded evidence to support the claim. Rubenstein may have been brasher, Horowitz splashier, Serkin more intellectual, Giesking more delicate, but Lipatti combines more of the virtues of a great pianist into a complete whole than any other giant of the century.

This recording is a case in point. Playing the music of composers as diverse as Chopin, Lizst, Ravel and Enescu, Lipatti shows many sides of his musical personality. The Chopin Sonata is by far the best recording of this work I have ever heard. The Sonata is phenomenally difficult, and yet, listening to Lipatti's version you are not aware of the difficulty. Lipatti tosses off the most fiendish run as if it were Chopsticks...and you are left to marvel at the sheer beauty of Chopin's creation. The third movement especially is breathtaking. This is an extremely difficult movement to pull off well. It hangs together by a line that tends to be hidden in the music, but Lipatti finds this line. The performance has a spirit and poetry that I've never heard equalled.

The other major work on this disc is the Enescu 3rd Piano Sonata. Enescu has recently undergone something of a renaissance, with more of his non-Romanian Rhapsody No. 2 works appearing on disc and in concert. But Lipatti was an early champion of his godfather's music. The Third Sonata is a delicate, almost neo-Baroque work, with a heavy debt to Debussy. Lipatti makes it sing lyrically, even in it's most virtuoso passages. His filigree is delicate and his sense for the inner poetry behind the music is unequalled.

The "filler" on this disc includes a lovely version of the Liszt Sonnet #104 of Petrarch, a duet reading of Brahms' Waltzes with Nadia Boulanger on second piano, and a stunning recording of the Ravel Alborada de gracioso. In all these works, Lipatti's touch is meltingly delicate, his virtuosity unmatched...and yet the spirit of the work is paramount. I cannot say enough about this wonderful pianist or this stunning record except, go get it now!.

5 out of 5 stars go buy it.......2002-04-20

This is far and away the best performance of the Chopin (one of my favorite pieces) I've heard, quite possibly one of the best interpretations of anything... There's a fine line between not interpreting music and distorting it, and most classical and romantic artists, respectively, fall into one of these two categories. A handful of the old "classical" pianists, especially Gilels and Lipatti, managed to tread this line with a sublimely restrained kind of interpretation which still somehow does more for the rhetorical sense of the music. Though he is technically more subtle, the potency with which he delivers the music reminds me of Furtwangler. I'm not the biggest fan of the Brahms waltzes but all the other stuff on the disk is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Buy any CDs as long as it is by Dinu.......2001-12-14

Listen to his Ravel and Brams and Chopin, you will be totally intoxcated. You can't expect a better pianist. Horowitz is slightly inferior. Rubinstein existed only to reflect how great Lipatti is.G.Gould makes you feel the same sometimes but he makes you uneasy most of the time.

Just like what's on the back flip of the EMI record: God lent the world HIS chosen instrument, whom we called "Lipatti", for too brief a space.

Album Description

Nadia Reisenberg (1904-1983), who studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, emigrated to the United States where she became a pupil of Alexander Lambert (a Liszt student) and Josef Hofmann. Her career as teacher and virtuosa spanned over 60 years. During her years at Juilliard, she produced many fine artists. She was a gifted performer with rare sensitivity and musical elegance. These historic and collectible performances are a testimonial to her illustrious career. (ADD) Recorded by Westminster 8/55, 12/56, 3/58. 5 out of 5 stars A sound actually missed!.......2004-08-15

Nadia playing was exquisite , arresting and flamboyant . Her style belonged to an ancient tradition that simply does not exist in these days .
Musicality , honesty , are the last consequences of a deep insight in the soul of the composer . In her hands , Haydn sounds so convincing , that nobody in this moment (with the gloroius exception of Andras Schiff) can play with such pureness and rapture .

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic CD.......2004-02-07

Nadia Reisenberg's performance on these pieces is exquisite.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2003-08-29

This is piano playing at its finest. Tone color, voicing, clarity are impeccable. Played with fire and conviction although in a totally idiomatic, classical fashion. This is not the 'prettified' playing of many pianists of this generation but full-bodied, dramatic, musicianly straightforward interpertations of some familiar as well as not so well known pieces. Mme Reisenberg was a musician's musician. I wish some of her other releases (Chopin, Kabalevsky, Rachmaniov) from this period would be re-released.
