She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars It's good.......2007-07-22

But I don't think it's all it's hyped up to be on the other reviews, but, I do like it to the point of keeping it. It's the perfect 4star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary times.......2007-05-14

I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.

4 out of 5 stars Black Dove.......2007-05-13

Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars makes me want to dance .......2007-05-07

I really enjoyed the CD, the musical selection is great and it seems very authentic.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy!.......2006-12-30

I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

5 out of 5 stars A Mighty Fine Record.......2007-05-24

This is a colourfully eclectic album that really showcases Frida's extraordinary vocals. It bursts out of the speakers with 'Tell Me It's Over': a short punchy rock song which gets straight to the point before lilting into the sublime 'I See Red' with it's dub overtones. 'To Turn The Stone' has aged but it is still an epic (and evidently must be good, since Donna Summer subsequently decided to record it after initially turning it down). There's nothing new to say about 'I Know There's Something Going On' - a fantastic song with a killer vocal delivery. The question only remains as to why this stalled at #43 in the UK. 'Threnody' and 'The Way You Do' are in turns beautifully wistful and playful songs and there aren't the words to describe her cover of 'You Know What I Mean'. It is celestial. The highlight, after IKTSGO, though has to be 'Baby Don't You Cry No More' with its light lounge blues. Perfectly pitched though mischievous.

There are not many singers who could carry this off. Frida does it with aplomb. An essential purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love Frida!.......2006-06-03

I am not going to compare this album with ABBA or Agnetha. What's the use? After (and before!) ABBA, both women made music quite different from the famous ABBA sound. I personally like Frida's voice and solo work over Agnetha's, but that's just my opinion. As for this album, it's nice, but not her best. Some of the songs I really love (I Know There's Something Going On, Threnody, The Way You Do)), but some I don't particularly enjoy (I Got Something, Here We'll Stay). But in all, it's a great document of the early '80 pop-sound. Frida's voice to me was, and still is, one of the finest in pop music!

5 out of 5 stars No second fiddle!.......2005-09-08

Frida has always been my favorite voice in ABBA. Could any voice sound as rich as she does in ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You?"
There is not a single dud on this entire cd. She and producer Phil Collins picked from the hottest songwriters of the day. The Brian Ferry penned-song "The Way You Do" is flawless, as is the haunting, atmospheric "To Turn The Stone." Other highlights are the rocking "Tell Me It's Over" and folk-tinged "Threnody."
As far as the remaster goes, the sound quality is excellent. The bonus tracks in no way add to the total package. I never really cared for the solo version of "Here We'll Stay," the duet with Phil Collins on the original cd. It seems unpolished. The newly included radio/single edit of "I Know There's Something Going On" proves that there is nothing like the original. Some things are better left alone! I LOVE THIS SONG!I did hear an incredible dance remix of this classic track while at a club in London in 2004. It was approximately 10 minutes long and played up the guitars but had a super-fast computerized beat. Where is this version? It should have been included instead of the edit. Also, no review would be complete without mentioning the excellent jazz-influenced "Baby Don"t You Cry No More" and the touching ballad "You Know What I Mean."

I can honestly say that overall, this cd is slightly better than some ABBA cds, the exceptions being "Super Trouper," "The Album," and "Voulez-Vous," of course- all perfect. Buy this cd and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Remaster.......2005-06-04

This is a great remaster of her first post-ABBA album. The first thing I noticed about it was they didn't use the same version of 'Here We'll Stay', it's been slightly remixed from the original album version, but a great version none-the-less. The 'Solo' version of 'Here We'll Stay' sounds more like a demo than a single version...I think I read somewhere that it was released as a single...yuck! But I digress. The remaster is top notch and should not be overlooked. The single edit of 'I Know There's Something Going On' sounds ok, but you can tell it was transferred from digital to analog and back again for this remaster.
This is a great album and worth the cost just to get that 'extra' track of Frida singing solo on 'Here We'll Stay' for all Frida fans.

    Album Description

UK NTSC/Region 0 DVD Pressing. For four decades Frida's distinctive voice has mesmerized us in everything from 60s schlager, to big band jazz in which her voice hits notes with precision, elegance and skill, to ABBA's decade-long international success with Frida and Agnetha's voices creating unique resonance, to her work post-ABBA and the release of three very different and exciting albums in the 80s and 90s. This year Frida celebrates her 60th birthday with the release of this special box set collection of her four solo albums and DVD (NTSC/Region 0). Recorded in 1975 as Frida was in the middle of her ABBA career, Frida Ensam was influenced by the ABBA sound and included the Björn and Benny-penned 'Fernando' in Swedish, a song that would later become a staple of ABBA's repertoire. Following ABBA's breakup in 1982, Frida recorded 'Something's Going On' in Polar Studios with Phil Collins. The album was a huge success. In 1984 Frida teamed up with another talented Englishman, Steve Lilywhite, behind the mixer. The result was the innovative, very modern 'Shine'. In 1996 Frida recorded her most recent album, Djupa Andetag, in Swedish with producer Anders Glenmark. From the breathtaking Swiss Alps, Frida shares with us her thoughts on her influences, musical role models, fans, her development and her private life and their impact on her 40-year music career. The DVD contains over three hours of clips from Swedish television appearances as well as videos spanning Frida's career, and her work with Phil Collins and other international stars. Follow Frida from her 1967 debut and breakthrough in Hylands hörna to her favorite club in Zermatt in the summer of 2005. Polar. 2005.

The voice of Danish tenor Lauritz Melchior was unique. Absolutely evenly produced from ringing top to baritonal bottom, he seemed tireless, and no amount of heavy singing of Wagner's most challenging roles appeared to have any adverse effect on him--he sang until well into his 60s. The selection here is all you'll need to have. Melchior is stunningly partnered by Frieda Leider--perhaps the warmest of all Wagnerian sopranos--in the Tristan love duet, and his attention to legato and beauty of tone is amazing in this music. Lotte Lehmann joins Melchior in part of Act I of Die Walküre, where his Siegmund is both loving and heroic, and there's probably never been a recording of the Prologue Duet from Götterdämmerung quite as exciting as this one, with Kirsten Flagstad as his Brünnhilde. Elsewhere, Melchior's Otello excerpts (in German) are steely and exciting, while a French and Italian aria or two could have used their original languages. Walther's music from Die Meistersinger shows Melchior in a more lyrical mode. They don't make them like this anymore. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Almost all the best recordings..........2006-08-04

Almost every important recording of the real 'voice of the (20th) century'. (Only missing are the Tristan duet with Flagstad and the Helen Traubel/Toscanini recordings from 1941. There has been no one since (or before, on the evidence of no less than George Bernard Shaw) who could sing these roles as if they were easy. In particular, if you've not heard the Tristan duet with Frieda Leider, you don't know what this music is supposed to sound like!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Don Giovanni.......2006-02-14

One of the earliest of the staple "Don Giovanni" recordings. I have been listening to this recording non stop for the past few weeks now, and it continues to surprise me. Despite being an older recording, the quality is excellent thanks to the work of the brilliant Ward Marston (any time you see his name on a remastered recording, you know the work is top-notch). He knows how to clean up the sound without distorting or destroying it. At the price Naxos offers, there should be nothing to keep this out of anyone's collection, even if you already have a few recordings of this opera. The primary cast is excellent, and I have been especially pleased to listen to the beautifully high-voiced Don Ottavio on this disc--generally the sound of Ottavios on other great recordings is weak at best (the Siepi recording suffers from this).

      5 out of 5 stars Gone.......2005-11-06

I won't even lower myself to find exactly what the legal copyright fluff was with EMI that caused this extraordinary 70-year-old recording (that maybe 3000 people worldwide remotely care about) to be yanked from circulation. I picked mine up at a music retailer's--coincidentally at the moment he was gathering up various Naxos discs involved in this altercation, in preparation to returning them. Now the question is when will this be re-released and will we ever again hear the incredible remastering done by Ward Marston; it's all in the hands of lawyers and money people now. It's the best DG I've ever heard and, in a peculiar yet wonderful sense, the best sounding. The clarity of this recording of this singular cast is amazing! Some background hiss but who the heck cares.

Anyway, if this ever turns up again, or if you spot it in a cutout bin at some backwater shop grab it.

5 out of 5 stars Great performance at a bargain price.......2004-03-09

I agree with the previous reviewers.

This is a justly famous recording of what must have been a fabulous ensemble on the Glyndebourne stage. For my money, the youthful Salvatore Baccaloni is the finest Leporello on disc. And Louise Helletsgruber, that best of Cherubinos, is very good as Donna Elvira. John Brownlee is the smoothest and most seductive among the handfull of truly great Don Giovannis.

5 out of 5 stars A word for this production.......2003-02-19

I would like merely to emphasize the astonishing dramatic quality of this recording. I have heard other performerrs outshine those here from a purely musical point of view.. But never a recording (of any work) that gave a better sensation of the operatic performance.

      5 out of 5 stars A highly-rated and universally admired classic recording........2001-08-15

For as long as I can remember, this recording made at the then newly-built opera house on John Christie's country estate at Glyndebourne, Sussex, England, has been highly rated and universally admired. Critics and reviewers in recent times have generally rated it as indispensable, even though it was recorded more than seventy years ago. I believe it was the first complete recording of the opera. It was made over a period of one week while the opera festival was in progress. Now comes this excellent Ward Marston restoration on the super budget Naxos label to a newer listening public in the C21st.

Keith Anderson, in the accompanying notes, provides an explanation for the greatness of the Mozart opera productions that opened the Glyndbourne opera house in the 1930s. They were strong ensemble productions. The conductor was Fritz Busch. The producer was Carl Ebert. Rudolf Bing became involved also in 1936.

As has frequently happened in subsequent productions, the cast of singers is drawn from many countries - almost as many as Leporello mentions in his catalogue aria. The don is an Australian, Leporello an Italian, Anna an American, Elvira an Austrian, Zerlina is English, Ottavio is Hungarian, and Masetto is Scottish. Outstanding amongst them is Salvatore Baccaloni as Leporello. He encompasses the vocal part with ease, he colours his voice with skill, and he delivers the recitatives at a spanking pace. John Brownlee is noticeably slower in the latter requirement. His singing always has the stamp of the aristocrat, suggesting a don destined for life-long partnership with a Spanish infanta rather than a don responsible for a catalogue of seductions. Ina Souez, powerful of voice and well in command of her difficult music, suggests a donna well able to defend herself from molestation, with or without the aid of Don Ottavio. Kolomon von Pataky sings eloquently throughout. Although the conductor favours fast tempi generally, Ottavio's two arias are taken slowly, preventing Pataky from attempting the "all in one breath" feats that many tenors achieve in these arias. Roy Henderson brings a few welcome touches of characterisation to the minor part of Masetto.

It is of course in the ensembles and the Act One finale that the opera's greatest sequences occur. Happily, these sections are wonderfully well-realised in this production. Indeed, the sense of ensemble and company interaction is perhaps the greatest strength of this classic recording.

As an appendix, Naxos provides excerpts from "Don Giovanni" performed by what they call "golden age singers" - including Chaliapin, Leider, Tauber, Pinza, and Elisabeth Schumann - in recordings made between 1926 and 1939.

        Album Description

Sweden's Hyvonen is a talented piano-based songwriter in the vein of Laura Nyro with a passionate bite and a voice like an icicle that cuts deep. This debut features a raw home-recording feel not dissimilar to The Stones' "Beggar's Banquet", Joni Mitchell's "Blue", or Carole King's "Tapestry".

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars great piano-driven pop/folk/indie/etc.......2007-05-04

I bought this CD after seeing Frida play at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago with Bishop Allen. She put on quite a show with nothing but her voice, her piano, and a glass of white wine (which a member of the audience kindly refilled mid-set).

I am not particularly sure about her influences or what to compare her to but Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Carole King, etc are all decent starting places. I don't want to paint her as a Tori Amos clone either for the simple reason because she is a girl with a piano. Either way it is safe to say that anyone who really appreciates female artists of this sort will definitely like Frida!

Lyrically I find her interesting. The article in the Chicago weekly, The Reader, which convinced me to attend the gig described her as a reluctant feminist. Overall, great Swedish import. Go see her and buy this CD!

        5 out of 5 stars Stellar!.......2007-02-01

Hyvonen's new disc is a incredible tour de force. Featuring some of the freshest songwriting in years, the collection is at times simultaneously passionate, tough and vulernable. Frida's haunting melodies and poignant lyrics linger long after the music's gone.

        3 out of 5 stars Mostly a decent CD.......2003-10-30

I wonder how many people saw the ad for this CD on TV and ordered it right away without looking further into the contents. Brightman? Bocelli? Pavarotti? Florez? Watson? All Three Tenors? All on one CD? Sounded like a winner in the ad. They don't mention the Main Title from Star Wars. Nor do they mention (even Amazon doesn't show it!), that Anne Sofie Von Otter's performance is actually a duet with Elvis Costello, who simply does not have the chops or vocal gifts that most of the other artists on this CD are blessed with. In fact, that song is positively dreadful, and it's all because of Costello's vocally-strained style. What the hell is he doing on this CD? The rest of this CD is generally fine, but certainly do not expect a CD full of classical music, and be prepared to skip song #2 every time you play the CD.

3 out of 5 stars OK but I expected more.......2007-02-09

I've read what the other reviewers had to say before beginning my
own. I personally like the slower songs better than the faster
because I feel you can get more from their voices that way.
I really didn't care as much for the "bouncy" styles but did like most
of the ballads. I agree with Big John in that after several listenings
I began to like the CD more than I initially did.
All in all I prefer their voices when they sing together. I think
that if they had done that on these recordings that they would have sold
thousands more. They shouldn't have named this CD "the Voice Of ABBA"
because it has very little to do with the ABBA sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Different But Good.......2004-06-07

I guess I was expecting the "ABBA" sound when I bought this and it took a few times through to begin to appreciate the songs for themselves. The singing styles are a bit different than what you might expect, but the voices are there. Bottom line is that these two ladies can flat out sing. I noticed that other reviewers seem to prefer one over the other and that's fine. Remember though, that without one or the other they wouldn't have been ABBA to begin with. Each brings a certain flavor to this disc and I am enjoying it. If you were (and still are) an ABBA fan, this CD is well worth a listen. Just be prepared to give it time to grow on you. You'll be happy you did.

4 out of 5 stars Even solo they are good, but not as great when they ABBA.......2001-10-30

Somewhere near the end of ABBA's decade long run Anni-Frid became Frida. It neither affected her wonderful singing nor the group's name. This album features solo songs by the ladies of ABBA, Angetha and Anni-Frid (or Frida if you prefer). The tracks are presented with Agnetha and Frida in alternating songs beginning and ending with Agnetha. They are all good but somehow lack a little of the quality as when they sang together. As some have already noted Agnetha's solos are of the slow variety with two exceptions: "I Won't Let You Go", which I feel is the best track on this album, and "The Heat Is On" with a calypso flavor, are more up tempo than her other tracks. Even so, her soprano voice is a pleasure to listen to. As for Frida, I always thought her songs with ABBA generated a few more goose bumps than when Agnetha sang solo with Frida providing some backup. This album clearly shows the reason why. Her solo performances on this album are great.

As history has shown neither had the same strong career as when they were together as ABBA. But this album displays their individual solo talents and is well worth having.

3 out of 5 stars Agnetha is ok but Frida is better........2001-07-07

I bought this cd, and i have listened it for several times.

Agnetha has good songs, but they're so slow and all talk about love and things like that.

Frida, is realistic, and she has better songs.

All the major hits by ABBA were sang by Frida(Dancing Queen: Agnetha & Frida, Knowing Me, Knowing You: Frida).

Agnetha sings in most ABBA songs, but Frida sings in the better songs.
