3 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING.......2006-07-05

I was expecting to hear some of the old songs with the same arrangements and backup bands. I was surprised to find not one single piece the same as I remembered. If you have no comparison, you would probably enjoy this gifted songstress. I found the quality overall to be disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Beat Mama? Join Her!.......2004-10-22

Mama Africa! What a proper name for the Queen of African Song. This collection has all the great songs from Miriam. It plays choronoligically from her earliest recording up to her most recent records. The melodies are infectious and Miriam makes you want to know more about the plight of the people of Africa she describes in her songs. This is a must-have for lovers of South African music.

4 out of 5 stars Good choice for new audience.......2004-03-17

As the previous review says, this is a good collection. However, as I was trying to replace songs from two albums which apparently haven't been released on CD (1960's "Miriam Makeba" RCA album and the early '60's Kapp Records album "The Many Voices of Miriam Makeba"), this CD wasn't what I was looking for. Most of the songs sound nothing like the arrangements I loved on those albums. They would be great for a new audience, but for those who are looking to replace those early '60's records, don't expect this to be the same. If your intention isn't to replace 40-year-old albums, though, I would definitely recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2002-11-23

Buy this just for tracks 1,4,15 and so on. To hear the early version of this voice is a pleasure in it self. But to hear the growth and development of an artist of this caliber is a rare treat indeed. Oh go ahead you know you want it.

5 out of 5 stars Neighbour to the moon, ambassador to the stars..........2007-02-25

" After Years of thirst, a voice like fresh water has arrived. A cloud, a love letter from another planet: Fairuz has overwhelmed us with ecstasy. Names and figures of speech remain too small to define her. She alone is our agency of goodwill to which those of us looking for love and poetry belong. When Fairouz sings, mountains and rivers follow her voice, the mosque and the church, the oil jars and loaves of bread. Through her, every one of us is made to blossom, and once we were no more than sand; men drop their weapons and apologize. Upon hearing her voice, our childhood is molded anew."

4 out of 5 stars A cross between jazz and Umm Kalthoum...........2006-12-25

I'm just getting to know classic Arabic music, and up until now I've bought Egyptian stuff: Abdul Halim Hafez, Umm Kalthoum, Mohammad Abdel Wahab, Kazem al-Saher. Fairuz is considerably more Western sounding. Easy listening is generally an insult in my book, but this does sound somewhat like middle of the 20th century American pop-jazz crossed with a classical Arabic style. She is (I think) the most famous Lebanese singer, and Lebanon is a major pop culture producer in the Arab world (I wonder how the Israeli bombs have affected that?). It's surprisingly good within this style, although I think that most of the other stuff I've heard up to this point impress me even more, even if its rawer sounding. I think the Arabs like that raw emotion, even if it's a bit off-putting to Westerners. For example: Inta 'Omry (You are my life) by Umm Kalthoum. This music is less off putting.

Unfortunately, I only have this. I don't know if Fairuz sounds different elsewhere. I don't find the orchestration particularly schmaltzy, perhaps just a bit stylized....

The concept world music is a vague one that can mean just about anything. Boundaries are simply sounds from a particular place played in a certain way. Unlike politics, the act of labeling is inclusive instead of divisive. It can be Bebel Gilberto's electro-bossa nova or Tinariwen's desert blues. Featuring all the nominated songs from the BBC's Awards, this two-disc/28-song collection fearlessly wanders the world, making stops on nearly every continent. Continuity or thematic unity is tossed out the window--this is just great music. About half the musicians here should be known to American world music fans (the above-mentioned as well as Gotan Project, Ojos De Brujo, Youssou N'Dour, and Khaled), but there are also names that haven't made it over to this side of the pond (Kaushiki Chakrabarty, Amparanoia and Ivo Papasov). It's these lesser-known artists that make this collection indispensable, offering us a clue of what artists will hopefully soon make American border crossings. --Tad Hendrickson

The Cameroonian jazz legend Manu Dibango made a splash on the world charts back in 1973 with a propulsive, saxophone-driven instrumental called "Soul Makossa," which sprinkled bits of American funk and soul into the dance music of West Africa. Much of his later work gave playful expression to this fusion of African and Western styles, sometimes with odd but always danceable results--as when he recruited rapper MC Mello and P-Funk bassist Bootsy Collins to add their touches to his swinging sound. The Very Best of Manu Dibango highlights his big hit, of course, but it also makes room for lesser-known work like "Ponciana," "Ekedy," and "Abele Dance," tunes that will likely be unfamiliar to all but the most wide-ranging of worldbeat aficionados. Favoring songs from Dibango's middle period, particularly his funk-layered outings from the 1970s, the disc includes a collaboration with Herbie Hancock, "Electric Africa," and the irresistible "Africa Boogie Afrovision" and epic "Sun Explosion." An ideal album to keep a party going, this sampler gives ample evidence for why Dibango enjoys such high regard. --Gregory McNamee

              3 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointed.......2003-10-05

I was a little disappointed that the version of Soul Makossa on this CD is not the original from the early 70's. It's not just remastered or remixed, it's totally re-recorded - more polish, less groove. And because of the vague liner notes, I'm not sure where this version even came from. What redeems this disc is that it's a great listen overall. Lots of funky beats and layered rythms backing a mean reed blowin' by Manu! Texturally, some of it reminds me of Remain in Light era Talking Heads. It's just ashame that the funkier original version of Soul Makossa wasn't included.

5 out of 5 stars Manu DiBngo and His Bangin' Beats!!!.......2003-04-24

Only Manu can make a beat that pound's your soul with that thumpin' sound of the drummer and the conga's mixed with just the right amount of deep haunting & seductive vocals that hit your ear like the BIG Bang Theory. It is explosive and mixes just the right amount of funk to keep your toes tappin. His beats are so infectious, that several rap artist's whom I will not name, still continue's to sample many of DiBango's beats, knowing that today's young generation beleive that it's a new sound. We who are the true collectors know that is not true. Manu churned out many hits during his time and once you've had the chance to really listen to his music...you will be pleasantly surprised at just how many of his songs have been incorporated into today's hip-hop. Thank you Manu for your precious gift of song. Long live Soul MaKossa!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Afro-Funk from "Lion of Cameroon" -- Manu Dibango.......2001-08-19

I happened to hear "Soul Makossa" one day on the Spinner Plus Internet radio station and was intrigued by this funky African music which sounded to me a bit like Fela Kuti. So figured I would try this Manu Dibango dude out. Boy was I glad that I did. Great Stuff!

This music should cure the worst case of the sweatshop blues. It's hard to sit still listening to this "Afro-Soul-Jazz" music. The sound quality is excellent.

The following four tracks more than justify the purchase of this CD.

              (1) Soul Makossa has a timeless polished funky beat with backup singers (French) and a power saxophone rifting in an out. This has got to be one of the top ten Funky recordings of all time.

              (2) Sun Explosion has quicker funky bass beat like a disco song on amphetamines that can quickly put you into a trance.

              (3) Adele Dance has more of Industrial style sound sort of like Manu Dibango Meets Kraftwerk. This combination works real well and doesn't sound dated at all because the Afro-Funk Saxophones and rhythms hold everything together (Oolalala!).

              (4) Electric Africa returns to more of the Soul Mokassa style of pure Afro-Funk beat with a more restrained power saxophone with Herbie Hancock on piano no less (Wow!).

On the down side, I wish there would have been more information on which albums these cuts came from and the dates these recordings were made.

What a shocker - no one has reviewed this CD! I don't even know Portuguese and this is one of my favorite world music albums. A Brit whose name I can't recall followed up his Nu Brazil compilation with this sequel. I can say with complete sincerity that this album has spawned a huge interest in Brazilian music for me, largely because it doesn't limit itself to just one style but tries to show listeners the incredible range and quality of music that the country's artists produce. If you don't like a certain track, skip it: the next one is almost guaranteed to please. My favorites are track 3 on disc 1, track 9 on disc 1, 6, 8, and 9 on disc 2, and the fantastic closer by Tuze de Abreu, a haunting tune that recalls Portuguese fado at its best. A must buy. I usually don't go in for compilations, but this is a notable exception - all in all, a fantastic album.
