A unique quality all her own…She has a universal, classic appeal …and she swings!

Product Description
The music is rich in color, rhythm and style…it runs the gamut from "on-the-edge-Latino" to "caliente" and quietly percussive! We are treated to collaborative latino visions of music that stir one’s soul, excites our bodies and enhances our sense of rhythm. Clem Ehoff’s group melds jazz improvisation in a harmonically sophisticated manner driven by a pulsating latin groove…a veritable paella of sound and rhythm. Graphic images of the Caribbean washing on American shores explode on every music staff. Are you ready for all of this excitement? Clem’s playing conjures up moments of every great pianist, but is not like any previous keyboard player. He plays with his own voice. This is a great collection of music. Somewhere, somehow, it reaches a place in one’s being that says, "all’s right with the world and the music is "to love"…this cookin’ ensemble knows itself. There is an undertow of "latintensity", which draws one down to its core immersing listeners in its pulsating surge. The music generates a quiet intensity which can propel one to undulate in sync with that propulsion. Gail Marten not only sings lyrics which tell a story, but recites a vivid prose which demonstrates that she has a hip awareness of life – delivered with a voice of sweetness and verve. Gail creates a rhapsodic reverie…an aesthetic which must be pleasing to most tuned-in listeners…(who) become aware that they are in the presence of a sensitive vocalist, whose instrumental voice also conveys deep messages about life. Gail has a particularly sensuous voice. She not only stirs passion, but she generates reflective thought. Delicious, as the melding of passion and intellect often is…the girl next door dressed in a black sheath! The rhythmic surge of Alfonso Rondon and Marty Knepp lets the listener know that there is no untamed spirit in this percussive melange. It is scintillating, bubbling and brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Another Incredible Perla Album.......2002-10-23

This is just another example of Perla Batalla's absolutely incredible voice, not to mention the outstanding music and lyrics. She and the very talented band bring an excitement to music that is truly rare, and the treat is to have it on a cd to enjoy whenever I want. I could tell you it is fantastic and special and beautiful and meaningful and that it is pure joy to listen to, but you really should find out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars These roots are made of gold.......2002-10-08

Perla Batalla takes the rich traditions of her Mexican roots and has spun pure gold on this album. While much of the material is original it is the pristine treatments of sweet standards that take this disc right to the top of musical achievements for this year. That this singer has not won a grammy or latin grammy is an indictment of the corrupt, teen pandering system that can overlook one of this planet's very best singers.
Let us begin with the voice: Perla Batalla's voice is the Chateau Lafite Rothchild wine, the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, the Mercedes-Benz' Maybach automobile of vocal instruments. She can reach the back row of the balcony without raising her heart beat and she can bring real tears with ballads so sweet they make your heart ache. The purity and power of Perla's pipes is rare and wonderful to behold. Secondly, there is the choice of marvelous material which gives freedom to the perfect vocalist to cover the gamut of emotion. You can hear a fine voice on American Idol but you can only put love into lyrics like Perla by travelling a long musical journey filled with setbacks, surprises, good friends, family and a deep abiding love for singing.
"Cuando Sale La Luna" has an meringue in its romantic soul and "La Llorona" finally tells the Mexican folk tale of the sorrowful woman with style and compassion. "Mexico de mi Alma," is a powerful, contemporary anthem to the mother country and the silken "Cucurrucucu Paloma" has long been owned by Ms. Batalla. Yet, these gems are not the highest of the heights on the disc. Little "Mananitas," the simple birthday song is so beautiful as to take your breath away. Only such a lovely rendition could make me happy on yet one more of mine own. My own personal favorite "La Barca de Oro" is destined to strum many a heart string. This ballad, so tender, so loving is performed to utter perfection here. If you can listen to this exquisite performance without a lump in your throat you better check for a pulse. I have honestly set my CD player to program number eleven six times running just to luxuriate in the tones like a hot bath of emotion.
There is more, much more with a little chile on it at "Discoteca Batalla." "Reloj," Sentimientos" and "Cine de Llantos" all shine but the much played "Guantanamera" is made new and poignant in these trying times by this sparkling arrangement. Ms. Batalla says in the notes that this album is a labor of love, a love for her family, her Spanish language and music. She has done them all proud. What we have here is deeply satisfying, a work that should achieve deserved longevity among a great variety of listeners. It is a group of songs that should find listeners in cafe's in Silverlake, in apartment buildings in Pico Union, in grand hotels in Montecito, in kitchens in Ojai and patios in Oxnard. It should be heard in New York City, in New Orleans, in Mexico City, in Barcelona, and it will be heard in Glassell Park many, many times. The dedication to quality and obvious love and respect for the material shines through every song. Even though my Spanish is strictly drawn from growing up in Los Angeles I feel the emotion even though sometimes the words are unclear. It is a language I love, respect and recognize as the best set to music in the world. I liken my affection but poor understanding to some favorite lines in the film "Shawshank Redemption": "I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singin' about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think they were singin' about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words and makes your heart ache because of it." Indeed, when Perla sings material as wonderful as this it is beyond the power of words. This album ranks with the great Los Lobos folklorico album "Del Este De Los Angeles," Juan Luis Guerra's "Bachata Rosa," and Vicente Fernandez' "La Muerte De Un Gallero" as my favorite Spanish language albums ever.

5 out of 5 stars An antidote to Pop Christmas Music.......2007-01-11

I happened to hear this in an mp3 newsgroup and immediately bought it for my folks and several other people. It is an incredible performance and unlike anything usually heard around Christmas . I listen to Classical music all day while working and yet I've never heard this before . Everyone who received it loved it.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing change........2006-11-25

While some tracks may be a bit tedious, there are some real gems here - enough to make you wonder why they remain mostly forgotten. The performaces are spectacular.

3 out of 5 stars Decent in moderation..........2003-12-26

A note to non-early music fanatics (as, contrary to the Mr. Cohen's notes, this CD mainly attracts early music fans):

This album is decent provided you don't listen to the entire CD in one sitting. It is a nice break from the run-of-the-mill Christmas music, whether it be of the "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" or "Jingle Bell Rock" variety. However, the arrangements become tedious after a while. There are only so many open-fifths one can hear... Most people will find themselves gritting their teeth 2/3 through the disc. The non-early music fanatic would do well to listen to several tracks at a time.

The classical enthusiast will not be pleased with Mr. Cohen's notes as he tends to disdain most "classical" music as pompous, "stuff shirt" nonsense. He seems to believe that the music on this disc is FAR better than that of, say, Handel's Messiah, simply because it is the music of lower/middle class (18/19th Century) America. He laments the Europe's influence on American music; after all, we should not be following the horrible examples set by Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, etc. Good four part writing, where--gasp--the tenor parts are not constantly following the sopranos?? And--Beautiful, full, varied instrumentation?! Counterpoint?!?! Hpmh!...what unmitigated gall! What sheer snobbery!

...Please don't misunderstand me. I respect both Mr. Cohen's expertise (his sentiment is a different matter) and this music, and I do agree that the music presented on "American Christmas" is an enjoyable break from "Santa Claus is comin' to town. And, yes, SOME of this music deserves more credit than it is given nowadays (it sure beats anything sung or written by Britney Spears...) But lets be realistic: Handel's Messiah this is not.

So, with that said, buy this CD... and remember, extreme moderation is the key to enjoying this album; if this sort of music was played as often as that oh-so-awful "music of reindeer," as Mr. Cohen puts it, you (provided that "you" are not an early music fanatic or Mr. Cohen) would find yourself desperately longing for the return of "Santa Claus is comin' to town."

5 out of 5 stars This CD contains some rare gems!.......2003-08-16

There are many delightfully refreshing tracks on this CD. While I'm not a fan of soloists, there are many tracks with a chorus. Many of these selections have a real Civil War-era sound to them. I especially like track 18: While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks, done in the form of a round. I've become addicted to track 24. This is a CD for all seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Mining an American heritage.......2003-01-07

The Boston Camerata is the foremost group dedicated to early music performance in the country ... This recording is one of my favorites, and it always gets heavy rotation around the holidays. The tunes are all American, taken from 18th and 19th-century sources, and definitely remind modern audiences of the religious heart of Christmas. Some of the tunes are familiar ('Joy To The World'), and some have unfamiliar texts ('The Watchman' and the evocative words sung to 'Adeste Fidelis'). Many of the tracks feature the beautiful harmonies of the shape-note traditions. The performances are, of course, stunning. Don't miss the terrific liner notes by Joel Cohen, calling Americans to reclaim our musical heritage from the classical and ethno-musicologists.

I like to display this cd case at the front of my stack as a visual reminder to experience "pure joy."

We own about 7 of the titles in this Healing Garden Series. They do all sort of "sound alike" as another reviewer stated, but they accomplish the purpose for us.

This is a great one to put in as background music on a sunny day, or if you need a boost to your spirits.

There are many similar albums out there but they always seem to cost quite a bit more (around $9 or $10) so I think these are a good deal.

A Beautiful Friendship is a wonderful, swinging mainstream/bebop piano trio album. Pianist Lenore Raphael has the ability to create new tunes out of timeless standards and make them fresh and her own. The album title reflects the relationship between the musicians. The interplay between the piano, bass and drums tells us that these are three people who have worked together often and enjoy the ride. Ballads are pure emotion; up tempo tunes are swinging and full of joy.

There's some good stuff on this recording, to be sure, but a great deal of it is in German, and much of it might not interest even someone with just a casual interest in the material chronicled. While there's a strong representation of The Threepenny Opera (all in German), the selections from Lady in the Dark featuring Gertrude Lawrence and Danny Kaye are vital, as are the tracks of Mary Martin and Kenny Baker performing selected numbers from One Touch of Venus. (You can also hear Walter Huston performing a song from Knickerbocker Holiday, though it is, for some strange reason, "The Scars." It's an interesting historical record, but not a great song.) Lotte Lenya also sings some as well, which is a treat, but overall, this is a highly variable recording. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting beforehand, or you may be likely to find yourself--as I do--listening to only half the album.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Worship--.......2000-08-27

If you appreciate the worship ministry of Chris Falson or Tommy Walker, you will love this CD. Music is also by Rick Founds, and Billy Batstone. This has Chris' stlye of worship and rock mixed to take you into the presence of the Lord. Count it all PURE JOY my brethern when trials fall upon you. I delight in the Lord is a fabulous song as well. The jacket of this CD also has the chord changes for the worship leaders! How Lovely YOur dwelling place is the best version of that song I've ever heard (I have the CD that song was orignially recorded on). JOn Nau does a fabulous job comping for Tommy Walker. It's a must have--however you can get your hands on it.

            Product Description

The music is rich in color, rhythm and style…it runs the gamut from “on-the-edge-Latino” to “caliente” and quietly percussive! Somewhere, somehow, it reaches a place in one’s being that says, “all’s right with the world and the music is “to love”…this cookin’ ensemble knows itself. There is an undertow of “latintensity”, which draws one down to its core immersing listeners in its pulsating surge.
