Effortless effervescence--that's the most fitting phrase to describe Guapa, the fourth studio disc from La Oreja de Van Gogh and follow-up to 2003's wildly popular Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida. Rock riffs, club beats, and instantly catchy melodies collide with the kewpie-doll vocals of Amaia Montero. Her voice is thin and wispy, to be sure, but it's a perfect fit for LODVG's pleasing pop confections. "Noche" and "Muneca de Trapo" are anchored by fuzzy guitar riffs, while "Vuelve" rides a Nirvana-inspired guitar groove, accented with electro beats. "A Diez Centimetros De Ti" pulses with the passion of young love, and "Mi Vida Sin Ti" morphs from a plaintive guitar ode into a delicious disco-ball ditty before shifting into a barroom sing-along, complete with blaring mariachi horns. There's lots of ground covered here, but LODVG's route never seems forced or overplanned. Guapa is simply the sound of a group comfortable with its talents and its varied inspirations. For fans of swirling world-pop, that's pretty inspired too. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Que buen disco..........2007-05-13

La Oreja de Van Gogh tiene una larga trayectoria musical, exelentes canciones y, lo mejor de todo, una exelente vocalista... Escuchar la voz de Amaia Montero es lo mejor...

4 out of 5 stars Guapa: Great Music Work.......2007-01-09

The music of this CD is great. It is my second favorite CD from Oreja de Van Gogh...their sound is very unique and easy to hear. It is the kind of music that can make anyone feel happy.

4 out of 5 stars Cheers and bubbles.......2006-12-19

Amaia Montero's voice is soo cute :) This album is consistently upbeat Spanish pop. Think Gray's Anatomy soundtrack in Spanish, but better. There is nothing not to like. I did not give 5 stars because I reserve that for albums I consider truly outstanding, not just nice and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Guapa es la mejor!!!!!.......2006-12-15

Me encantan todos los discos de la Oreja de Van Gogh, pero es probable que Guapa sea la mejor de todos. Dulce Locura es la cancion mas bonita. Compralo!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2006-12-04

I've been a fan of this group forever...One of my favorite songs on here is Muneca de Trapo...many more, but this is a all time favorite. I know they'll keep doing good so keep supporting them!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Collection from one of Spain's best Pop/Rock Bands!.......2006-08-11

This album is stunning! The songs are once again, catchy, clever, literate, romantic and often funny. The arrangements on this album are even more elaborate and innovative than in their previous effort. I swear this band just keeps getting better! The vocal harmonies are as lovely as they have ever been; the lead singer's voice is amazing, strong, beautiful and sexy! The Beatles influence is still there, and the songs are very well crafted, yet sound very different from the previous album. The first three singles are outstanding; "20 de Enero" ("20th January"), "Puedes Contar Conmigo" ("You Can Count On Me") and "Rosas" ("Roses"), but the rest of the songs are just as good. This album (and its predecessor "El Viaje De Copperpot") is one of those albums where every song is very very good. This one of the Best, if not THE BEST Spanish Pop/Rock Band in the world!! I refer to their music as "Pop/Rock" for two reasons; the "rock" more than most "pop" bands and their songs have a complex struture that reveals craftmanship. This is not your average pop band!! These guys and gal actually write their own songs and play instruments; they don't just sing. This band is a real treat and a rarity amongst all the crap that passes for music in the Spanish Pop world today. I heard they just put out a new album. Can't wait to hear it!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Needs No Translation.......2006-08-05

Having enjoyed Latin music for many years and not being any where near competent in Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, I can say that this group is up there with Electric Light Orchestra, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and The Corrs. Of their four studio albums this one is the best one in my opinion by the fact that it has the greater number of really good songs than the others. Very good European pop rock with a touch of Old Spain for extra flavor.

3 out of 5 stars spain.......2006-07-04

I would like this album more if I liked the lead singers voice. Some songs sound quite good, so maybe I will look out for them.

4 out of 5 stars A Few Songs Too Generous.......2006-06-05

La Oreja de Van Gogh treats us to too much of a good thing. Fifteen cuts, including the hidden track, result in a certain sameness setting in for, say, songs 11-13 or so. I may hold this view because, while my Spanish is good it's by no means native, and after awhile -- lulled by the very similar pop melodies -- I don't try to distinguish between the songs by listening closely to the lyrics. The pop sound, however, is usually deceiving for the lyrics -- and their tales of loss and death banished by dreams -- are anything but lightweight. Puedes Contar Conmigo, 20 de enero, Rosas, Geografia, and La esperanza debida are the best cuts. But there isn't a bad song in the bunch; the group should have just saved a couple for another CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Melodic, Nostalgic, Beatle-esque, Catchy Spanish Pop/Rock!! This album is great!!.......2006-08-11

I understand this is the band's second or third album. Whatever it is, it's a real treat. I have not heard their previous album(s), only this one and the one that came out after (see my review for "Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida ("What I Told You While You Were Pretending To Sleep") I am a rock fan, always have been. I like some English pop, but I hardly listen to Spanish music anymore (exceptions: Alejandro Sanz and Mexican female rocker Alejandra Guzman... and Juanes) but this album was a real nice surprise. The songs are fun, catchy, the lyrics literate and often romantic and clever. The songs are extremely well-crafted. There is some Beatles influence here; I am referring to mid-60's Beatles, around the time of "Rubber Soul"/Revolver and maybe a touch of "Abbey Road"; especially in the vocal harmonies which are really lovely (and which also recall late 70's Fleetwood Mac) and in the structure of the songs. I first heard the song "Cuidate" (translates as "Take Care of Yourself") on the radio. It was a huge hit in Mexico, (as were "Paris", "Soledad" ("Loneliness") and "La Playa" ("The Beach") ) and I was instantly hooked. The band uses lots of synthesizers, acoustic and electric guitars and sometimes strings. The sound is also kind of "retro"; sort of 60's pop/rock. "Cuidate" reminds me a bit of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger". Te lead singer's voice is lovely, smooth, soothing and very very sexy!! I don't know her name but she is a total babe!! Some of the songs are uptempo soft rockers, others are ballads but all are finely crafted and extremely enjoyable. La Oreja de Van Gogh is one of the best Spanish music bands today!! If you like Spanish pop music, you will enjoy this album very very much!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music Needs No Translation.......2006-08-05

The only deciding factor in whether this album is second only to LODVG's third album is that there are two more songs on that album than this one. None of the songs on this album are slackers. They pop and they rock. Great for dancing or rocking in the SUV on a road trip.

4 out of 5 stars Good Rocking CD.......2004-01-31

Their mix of music is good. The songs are original and upbeat, a hint of 80's American music, but overall good rocking. I saw the band on Musica Si several times on the TVE network when I lived in Europe. Orega de Van Gogh won the MTV Europe Award for best band in 2000. Second CD is better than the first which to me seems to be a trend for Spanish groups.

5 out of 5 stars A Big Surprise.......2003-09-28

I bought thie CD on the strength of their last album Dile al Sol
This is a great album, I enjoyed every cut on it. The first and last cuts are the ones I really get,Cuidate ad Desde el Puerto. These are fresh sounds to me and some cuts have a touch of European influence. By the way I am just about ignorant in Spanish, but listening to this CD, it doesn't matter.

5 out of 5 stars W-o-W.......2003-09-02

Sadly, I rarely listen to Spanish music, even though I'm from Madrid. As it often happens with most genres, it has become repetitive, monotonous, predictable and - to say it all in one single word: commercial. My musical tastes range from varied classical music (from Mozart to Schostakovich) to nowadays most contemporary sounds such as Massive Attack, Prodigy or Chemical Brothers. Without forgeting outstanding music authors impossible to find here at Spain such as Phish, oldies like Elton John, and indeed everything that is WELL DONE. Well, after this introductory info about my musical background, you'll probably better evaluate my review about LODVG.

El Viaje de Copperpot is a good example (a very good example indeed) of how to compose good pop music without falling into routine. I've read some reviews giving out little stars to this group, and often making reference to other Spanish or Latin groups. That is in my humble opinion a big mistake since LODVG, although under the pop-rock sound movement, is unique. Their lyrics are unique, and their music is unique. If listened to all of the songs' album carefully (it happens the same on their next album) it is possible to detect a big influence in each song from a different well known group. I personally found many hidden references out of Supertramp style, though when listened for the first time they're difficult to spot.

They needn't complicated - often badly chosen - synth sounds or innovative fx to create the desired athmosphere. Yes, they have keyboards, and indeed they are very very well implemented, but this group is mainly acoustic. They utilize their resources carefully achieving clean, well designed songs, easy to listen and remember, but with harmonies, themes and scores in general well, very well made, varied, non-repetitive but preserving their astounding style.

If you think this might be too much for you, then return to Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin. Otherwise, I highly recommend you give them a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-30

Ok, I'll first start off by saying that I have a very limited spanish vocabulary, but the music, vocals, and beats are amazing! I listen to this cd when I'm designing and it's the perfect cd to listen to as you come home from work! I origianlly bought this off iTunes, amazed that they had it, but failed to back up my purchased music! The only cd I was really longing to get was this one! So instead of buying online, I held out for the real deal, and went with amazon.com. Truly amazing! Oh, their second is good, but not as perfect in arrangment as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Una belleza de paraisos electronicos y delicia del pop!.......2006-10-31

Make no mistake, this is a really cool CD. It is even better than their old stuff. Trust me you should buy it, do not make the critical mistake of not doing this, I beg you.
