This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

Lecuona Plays Lecuona.......2007-05-12
Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

Lecuona the Cuban pianist is Great!.......2005-08-17
In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!
The Cuban Chopin.......2004-06-18
What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.
Lecuona, the musical genious . . . . ........2002-10-16
I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.
LECUONA IS NO LIGHTWEIGHT.......2002-02-27
Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.
In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

One of the best pices of music.......2005-09-24
Borges its a great writer, and so when it comes to mix the emotion of literature in the field of music, piazzolla its a virtuoso, the complete record its great, perfectly balance, emotional, intense, a must for the nu tango lovers
The Name Says It All.......2005-03-11
Tango Apasionado - never has there been a better description of the form in generalic. And the "Cyclical Night" describes the form on this CD in specific. The tango has evolving from a barrio song of bordellos to a sultry dance to, in Piazzolla's hands, an entirely new creature. One only has to see "The Twelve Monkeys" and hear the edgy, nervous sound track to realize how far the Tango has progressed.
But it is the Milonga and songs/pieces like this that continue to draw us to the music. All that yearning, longing and bittersweet melody. If you like Piazzolla (and I cannot imagine any sane person who doesn't) then this is one of the signature works, approved by the master himself. It's cyclical nature is perfect for the story the composer tells. Best of all it shows yet another facet of this multi-faceted man. Not only was he a great composer who moved the music beyond the safety zone, he was also a performer of the first order. The bandoneon, that yawning, difficult instrument literally sings. Pablo Zinger is, of course, as wonderful as ever. Indeed the ensemble sounds more like a single unit than disparate musicians. This is a relic of great value and should be treasured as such.
A true gem........2003-02-06
If you like Astor Piazzolla, you'll love this one. This, along with Buenos Aires Tango: Zero Hour and La Camorra, are Piazzolla's best works (even recognized by the master himself).
If you like tango, you'll love this one. No matter how purist you could be, Milonga Picaresque es as pure as tango itself.
If you like Jazz, you can't miss Milonga For Three (Reprise).
And, if you just like music (like me) well, this is the CD to have.
It has something that makes it so special. It's great for all tastes. One funny thing: Milonga For Three (reprise) is GREAT FOR LOVEMAKING ;-)
wonderful.......2003-02-05
I have just started taking Tango lessons and got this on my way home one night, can't stop listening to it, and doing steps in my head as I go to work.....tis' Wonderful, full of passion and romance that is true Tango

This has all the earmarks of a disaster . . ........2004-07-31
. . . what with the master finding himself in a setting with electric piano, various synthesizers, background horn "sweetening," and fusion drummer Jeff Porcaro. But you know what? His res, the shear weight of his presence, lifts what could've been a lightweight, throwaway date into the stratosphere--or at least the upper atmosphere.
When this session was recorded in the early nineties, jazz was going through an awkward phase. It was thought by many that it could not compete with New Age and Fusion music without a little sweetening and compromise. If it stayed true to itself and its roots, it would find itself relegated to the musical backwaters of cultural irrelevance. The subsequent decade and a half have pretty thoroughly laid to rest that notion, but the jazz world at this time found itself littered with attempts to make it relevant.
This is one of those. And one of the more successful efforts. But it's almost entirely because of the enormous presence of Getz, the most significant sax voice of his generation, and one of a handful of giants on his instrument in the history of jazz.
Still, when all is said and done, this is a disc a lot more likely to appeal to fans of the Rippingtons than fans of Joe Lovano. The songs, all except one credited to Eddie del Barrio, Herb Alpert, and Getz himself, seldom rise above pleasant though rather generic-sounding jazz fusion, mostly of a vaguely Brazilian sort. Jobim lite.
On the other hand, it does have Kenny Barron on piano, Oscar Castro Neves on guitar, and Paulinho da Costa on percussion, players of the first rank, who generally lend the proceedings a gravitas not usually associated with smooth jazz, and even occasionally goose Mr. Getz into some impassioned statements.
Throw in some very slick arranging, production, and recording values and you have a disc that nearly swamps the leader in saccharin. But doesn't. Just barely.
Certainly worth owning, as any Getz disc is, if only for its novelty value and to hear the master beat the surrounding fluff into submission. But not essential. If faced with a choice, you're better off with Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions, from around the same period, which IS among Getz's greatest ever discs. Four-and-a-half stars.
PASSIONATE STAN GETZ MASTERPIECE~BRAVO MR. GETZ!!!.......2004-05-28
The legend of Stan Getz has always fascinated me and in 1990 when this masterpiece was released, Stan Getz made an appearance on the Boston Pops where he also played with the other guest artist Melissa Manchester and was so extraordinary that I purchased "Apasionado" upon its release!! Hypnotic is the opening title song and Stan plays with so much soul that I am carried away each time and the arrangement is incredible!! Kenny Barron on Acoustic Piano is also amazing and this is truly a magical musical journey that is a great escape and the best instrumental set in my collection that I come back to year after year!!! Orchestrations flow and the fluid solo of Stan in "Coba" is again brilliantly complemented by the masterful Kenny Barron creating a rich tropical delight full of passion. Totally inspired is this set of original classics that were all composed by producer Herb Alpert, arranger Eddie del Barrio and Stan Getz himself!!! Mesmerizing is the enchanting "Waltz For Stan" with Stan giving a soulful and glorious performanace quite unlike anything I have ever experience before and the arrangement again beautifully showcases his classic solo. Exotic latin rhythms caress and surround a gorgeous passionate solo that is full of fire in the exquisite "Espanola" while fascinating rhythm changes make "Madrugada" a wild ride with incredible interplay between Stan and Kenny Barron with both at their absolute peak!! Each work has its own unique feel with Stan mellow yet powerful and all over the map and at his all time creative peak and one would never know that he was extremely ill when this recording was made. I was so sad when he passed away so quickly after its release as this was a new plateau...Stan weaves a mellow spell in the beautiful jazzy "Quiet Storm" classic "Amorous Cat" and gives another masterful performance in the tour-de-force "Midnight Ride" which again features GREAT keyboard playing by Kenny Barron that flows beautifully with Mr. Getz who is at an incredible peak in this stunning masterpiece that is a ride you won't want to end!!! Ending this soulful set is the soft and haunting "Lonely Lady" that is a 4 A.M. classic that is very smooth and a lovely ending to a remarkable set that is my personal favorite from this legend...Thank You Mr. Getz for this incredible gift that is from your soul...This is a timeless classic...
One of Stan's Best.......2003-02-15
This disc is one that gets getter every time I listen to it. When it first came out, I was a little annoyed because it seemed overproduced. However, in retrospect, it doesn't matter how much "fluff" you add, Getz's playing manages to make the experience memorable. Stan Getz is one of those rare artists who has the ability to take someone else's songs and make them distinctly his own. Although he was not a prolific music writer, his interpretatations have left an indelible mark on the world of jazz. Getz is a master of the understatement. He doesn't add notes where they are not needed. He does not rely on the Kenny G school of pointless arpegios to astound us with his swift (though undeniable flat) fingerwork. I am always amazed by his clarity of pitch. Stan Getz was truly a master, and I only regret that I was unable to see him perform live.
Favorite Getz Recording.......2002-02-08
I am a big Stan Getz fan and this is my favorite of all his recordings. I'm not sure that one could find a more soulful song than Waltz for Stan, or a more soulful CD than Apasionado.
Amorous Cat.......2000-02-10
It is apparent from the moment this album spools up, that this is Getz's talent at its mature best. When he swings, it is with an indescribable glide & kink. When he speaks to you, he speaks so intimately. Only a great jazz artist in the fullness of his later years could touch us so.

It can be a Cure for broken heart.......2007-06-27
I think it's one of the best interpretation of Piazzolla.
Piazzolla did not plan to make This suite, but I feel
they originally made a perfect suite.
And all songs are True song of soul, I think.
delightful, awesome, superb.......2006-02-07
This album has something for everyone; Serenity, excitement, passion all conveyed by the wonderful talents of Theodore Kerkezos and his sweet sounding saxophone. His opening track by Tomasi has the most beautiful harmonies and his vibrato really accentuates this. I am however a huge fan of the Piazzolla Tango Suite and this is a must for any saxophonist out there to listen to how a saxophone should be played. The Prelude has a distinct "Kill Bill" sound but it's oh so exciting. You've got elements of Bach's fugues but jazzed up especially in the Fugata. Then there's Oblivion, absolute pure sounding heart rendering music that you could just listen to all day. The album ends in the best fashion with Iturralde's "Czardas" which any saxophonist knows is a fantastic piece to perform and what a great finale to an outstanding collection of music.
This album is a must for any saxophonist and anyone that wants to hear some great works of the 20th century. I can't rate it enough and if there is anyone in two minds - BUY IT!
Striking Sax & Orchestra Works and Performances.......2004-09-21
I'm not a saxophonist and don't know the first thing about the technical aspects of playing this instrument. But to my ears Theodore Kerkezos sounds like a real expert as well as being a fine musician. He certainly has an opportunity here with these varied sax and orchestra pieces by composers ranging from Ravel to Piazzolla. As of the date of this review, Amazon has not supplied the contents of the CD, so I shall do so:
Tomasi: Ballade for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra
Frank Martin: Ballade for Saxophone and Orchestra
Ravel: Pièce en forme de habañera for Sax and Orchestra
Piazzolla: Tango Suite (arr. Kerkezos)
Dimitris Dragatakis: Ballade for Saxophone and Strings
Pedro Iturralde: Czárdás for Saxophone and Orchestra
The major works here are, of course, the Tomasi, Martin and Piazzolla pieces. The others, relatively speaking, are over in a flash. The Ballade by Dragatakis (1914-2001), originally for violin and piano, was recast by the composer for Kerkezos. It is a slow, lyrical outpouring, romantic in effect. The Czárdás by Iturralde (b. 1929) is a catchy combination of jazzy harmonies and the classic czárdás form, with its 'lassu' and 'friss' sections. The lassu has a haunting melody. Both these pieces are world première recordings. The Ravel Habañera (arranged by Arthur Hoérée) is by far the best-known piece here and it seduces in its melodic and sultry three minutes.
The 15-minute Ballade by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) is a three-movement delight. The Andantino has a lovely lyrical impulse and is followed by a jolly Gigue. The third movement, surprisingly, is a soulful Blues. The piece has a subtext, a poem by the composer's wife about a melancholy clown. Tomasi's style is a kind of French impressionism that also sounds a bit like Milhaud in his lighter vein.
Frank Martin (1890-1974), a Swiss composer whose 15-minute-long Ballade was written in 1938 for the doyen of European classical saxophonists, Sigurd Rascher, wrote in a Rousselian impressionist style, always a bit astringent, always utterly clear in form, and this piece does not vary from that assessment. This is the most dramatic of the pieces presented here, sometimes rising to an anguished outpouring by the soloist. Very effective.
The big surprise for me here is the 22-minute 'Tango Suite' by Astor Piazzolla (arranged by Kerkezos) cast in seven continuous movements. I have been a bit of a holdout regarding the music of Astor Piazzolla; for some reason, the music of his that I'd heard didn't especially grab me. But this suite is really quite nice. It starts with a throbbing Preludio that leads directly into an expert (and perky) Fugue that has the saxophone playing lickety-split. Kerkezos shines here, as does the London Philharmonic under Robert Minczuk (a rising young Brazilian conductor currently associate conductor of the New York Philharmonic). 'Misterio' is a haunting and melancholy song followed by yet another contrapuntal (and up-tempo) tango, 'Fugata,' which has the saxophone playing a delirious chromatic subject taken up by the strings in imitation, all in tango rhythm. 'Oblivión,' taken from Piazzolla's sound-track for the movie, 'Henry IV,' is the most seductive tango here, with the sax in the spotlight, cushioned by silky strings. 'Adios Nonino,' written in memory of the composer's father, is, at seven minutes, the longest section. It is a miniature tone poem that limns the heavy tread of the approach of death followed by a serene and moving lullaby. The suite closes with a jazzy adaptation of the well-known tango, 'Libertango.' I am aware that I write of this music knowing almost nothing of Piazzolla's work, and cannot vouch that I got it right, but I do know that I was very impressed by this suite. For someone who has resisted the blandishments of the tango, I had certainly melted by the conclusion of this music.
The verdict: Grab it!

DEFINITIVE LECUONA RECORDINGS.......2004-09-14
Tirino's Lecuona recordings are the definitive ones for all time. The Rapsodia Cubana in particular is something that Cubans like myself will cherish for many years to come. Bravo!
AN AUTHORITY ON LECUONA FROM ANOTHER AUTHORITY.......2001-05-14
The best review I can offer on this disc cannot be contained in my own words. I could quote from many approving and enthusiastic REAL critics from all over the world, but instead I will quote from someone who knew Maestro Lecuona all of his life. Among many handwritten letters and dedicated pictures from Lecuona to this individual, Lecuona states in one of them: “To Manolo Lamas, who has a musical spirit very few possess”. Maestro Lamas, possibly Lecuona’s best musical friend during his lifetime, (in fact-Lecuona was his godfather) INTIMATELY and EXPERTLY knows the maestro’s music. This authority has personally told me that Thomas Tirino is the BEST current living interpreter of the music of Lecuona that he knows. In fact, he says that on many occasions you cannot tell them apart. I suggest that you compare the different interpreters. I’m certain you’ll agree-and beyond that, you’ll profoundly enjoy and be dazzlingly enchanted by the pianistic talent of this wonderful concert artist. One can SENSE, above everything else, the love with which Tirino plays Lecuona’s music.
....
Kudos for Tirino!.......2001-05-10
This 3rd volume in a series of 5 CDs by pianist Tirino is a veritable treasure, not only due to the master pianist's astounding technical proficiency, but also due to his bravura decision to include a selection of Lecuona's most famous (and demanding) pieces. Pianist Tirino has single-handedly caused an international re-birth and re-discovery of my great-uncle Ernesto's musical works. Devoting a significant number of his life to researching, compiling, transcribing, recording, and performing Lecuona's music, Thomas Tirino's execution of the composer's danzas on this CD illustrates why our family recognizes him, among all post-Lecuona interpreters, as the standard bearer of the composer's music. Tirino's musical prowess shines throughout the valses and contradanzas included in Vol. 3. To listen to this recording is to return nostalgically to those idyllic nights I spent as a youngster in Cuba, listening to my uncle Ernesto perform his pieces at either his farm outside Havana or during his frequent concerts at Havana's theaters, such as the Teatro Payret or Marti. Astounding in his affinity to capture the "zandunga" or flavor in Lecuona's arpeggios and rhythmic nuances, Tirino clearly demonstrates why I, along with the remaining members of the Lecuona family, consider him to be the most representative interpreter of this great body of work. This volume is also important because it introduces and illustrates a side of the Lecuona repertoire not generally known to pianists outside of Cuba and Spain. This CD should be considered a "must" buy for both the serious student of Lecuona music as well as the casual fan of his great repertoire.
"The real thing" Lecuona Reincarnated.......2001-05-09
This is one of my favorite recording of ALL TIME. Torino's sound is beautiful and his playing shows great skill and total command of the style found in this music. Anyone who says it otherwise is ignorant. Torino is the real Reincarnation of Lecuona. The edit notes on his recording are transcriped from Lecuona's own recording and are welcome edition. What a contribution he has madel to future generation of artists! I am buying the rest of the CDs in the serie. Highly recommmanded!
Bravo!.......2001-05-09
Volume 3 of The Complete Piano Music (of Ernesto Lecuona) by Thomas Tirino contains some of the richest interpretations of the piano music of the great Cuban master I have ever heard. In particular, the orchestration of the Rapsodia Cubana is a work of inspiration. Through his considerable pianistic talent and scholarship, Mr. Tirino lends a sophisticated, international touch to this wonderful music that only an artist of his calibre could. The result is music that transcends ethnic and cultural borders and brings the listener into the world of pure sound.
