Soulful playing from the man.......2004-10-19

I was recommended to approach this CD with caution, as John uses his trademark "faultless and riskless" playing style to the maximum, but being a huge fan I had to explore. I was not disappointed.
The opening to Concerto Toronto is quite simply spine tingling, John's technical ability boggles the mind in what seems to be one of the hardest guitar compositions to date, and also one of the most beautiful. Brouwer's typical theme development techniques are used to great effect, and his orchestration is also very appropriate - a rare trait for a composer so dedicated to one instrument. In this first movement, I found myself rewinding and relistening many times to some of the phrases, as Williams' playing is so impeccable. The second movement, a theme and variations is also excellently presented, and especially the first variation, I'd like to hear any other guitarist play this well.
The Elogio de la Danza is also very neatly presented, if a little souless in parts, on the whole justice is done to this fine work.
El Decameron Negro promised such great things - One of Brouwers finest compositions played by a true master. However, looking beyond technical ability (which anyone would agree is here in buckets) El Arpa del Guerrero sounds as though the notes have been put into a computer and churned back out. Yes its fluid and mistakeless, but for such an estabished performer,I expected better and more original things.
His interpretation of La Huida de los Amantes por el Valle de los Ecos, however, is among the finest, if not the finest pieces of playing I have ever heard from John. The lyricism shines at every opportunity, and is strongly backed by his technique. If the gallop at the end leaves you unmoved, then see a doctor. Absolute magic.
Then the Balada de la Doncella Enmorada. This is undeniably a little rushed, and often used to show off - again its fluid and hugely impressive, but somewhat immature.(?)
The Hika is fantastic, John really brings out the agressive nature of the phrasing, and the sombre melodies - I'd like to see him do it live. He sure can play guitar.
Overall, definitely worth checking out - interpretations vary, and who am I to cuss such a legend's playing. I like this CD very much and so will you.

Brouwer and Williams at their best.......2000-02-09

Normally I do not like John Williams playing Brouwer or any other South American composer for that matter. This CD however surprised me. The music is played with, as always, technical supremacy and a lot of feeling/emotion, which I think normally lacks when he plays Brouwer. The Concerto de Toronto is great. I never knew that Brouwer composed stuff like this. The El Decameron Negro is out of this world.

One of Williams' best recordings!.......1999-11-17

In addition to the excellent premiere recording of Leo Brouwer's Concerto de Toronto (which, fortunately for Brouwer fans, includes several motifs used by Brouwer in some of his previous works), John Williams provides the listener with an outstanding rendition of the much recorded El Decameron Negro. His approach to La Huida de los Amantes por el Valle de los Ecos (The Flight of the Lovers Through the Valley of the Echoes) results in some of the most sensitive and energetic playing I have heard from Williams.

Simply the best Granados piano recording we have.......2000-09-17

I encountered this recording, that dates from the early sixties, for the first time on a Musical Heritage Society double LP that one commentator had remarked "sounded like Hispavox recorded it off a public address system". Even so, these wonderful recordings communicated the essence of Granados' inspiration in perfumed and ecstatic performance by Ms. De Larrocha. Now we have this excellent CD transfer that puts everything right sonically and lets us enjoy the music undistracted. Since this recording was not the artist's last word on the subject, why not buy her later performance? The reason is that this is the ne plus ultra of Granados recordings- the summit of achievement that will become one of your all-time favorite piano records.

Ravishing..........1999-05-26

Gorgeously played, sumptuously written. Nobody can play this music like Alicia de Larrocha. Recording noise notwithstanding, it's still fabulous and I'm buying my second copy.

What do you get when you combine the precision and finesse of a John Williams with the fire and boldness of a Paco DeLucia? Few classical guitarists meet this ideal balance of control and excitement in their recorded performance. Scott Tennant is definately at the forefront of this very short list. His recent solo project is the long awaited Vol. 2 of his complete recordings of the solo guitar music by Joaquin Rodrigo. Tennant once again delivers a powerful performance and demonstrates his understanding of Rodrigo's music.
On tracks such as Ecos de sefarad and the Passacaglia from Tres Piezas Espanolas, Tennant employs the long lost idea and perhaps the single most important attribute in the guitar's arsenal of wonder, tone colors. Tennant's use of color is not always apparent, but his dynamic range and impeccable technique provides for the kind of artist needed to perform these challenging gems of the classical guitar repertoire.
The music itself is not as poetic as the collection on Vol. 1. It does however include several favorites as well as compositions that, if performed more often, would soon become standards in the repertoire. There is, after all more to the genius of Joaquin Rodrigo than the Invocation y Danza and the Concierto de Aranjeuz. Much like the Naxos label has done with composers such as Sor, Coste, and Brouwer, Tennant is providing an invaluable comprehensive view of the brilliant contributions to the guitar by one of the single most important composers from the 20th Century.

Hola, panas, queria informarles para los que no se han enterado, que de alguna manera ha resucitado el fantasma de Zapato, esta vez bajo el nombre de Solares, quiero decirles que esta buenisimo su cd debut, se llama LOFT, como les dije, en esta banda, tanto Carlos como Alvaro Segura, forman parte de la alineacion de la banda, que aunque no lo crean la revista rollingstone, les otorgo 3 estrellas y media por tal produccion, espero puedan encontrarla, visisten su web site que esta ineteresante y dejen su comentario, www.bandasolares.com, busquen su cd en ella , ya veran la fuerza de esta banda que no tiene nada que ver con Zapato 3 a pesar de que Zapato fue una de las mejores bandas de rock de venezuela y ahora Solares se perfila en seguir con lo que Zapato dejo en su camino

Panas,esta es la obra que cierra momentaneamente un capitulo de la banda mas importante de los noventa en Venezuela.Este cd logra una perfecta simbiosis entre evolucion y antologia.El tema tocarte tocarte es un clasico del rock and roll nacional.Los demas temas dan evidencia de la busqueda de la banda siempre explorando nuevos horizontes,y redescubriendose en temas como antonin artaud que rememoran claramente el zapato 3 de los ochenta (para muchos el mejor)...Lo mejor de la carrera de zapato esta aqui.

Zapato's 5th album is there best work yet. Rock and roll at its finest, they finally have the perfect balance between the music and there controversial lead vocalist. Best songs are : Entrada de bala, Recordandote, permanecer and el amante. Antonin Artaud is very teatrical and very dark. Zapato 3 scores a big time hit with Ecos Punzants del ayer, now if they could only get backing from the industry they would be touring stadiums in all of Latin America.

Incredibly authentic, beautiful.......2005-04-07

This is one of the best Andean music records I have ever heard, perhaps made even more authentic by the fact that it was put out and released by a non-American, non-European label. While there are no liner notes and the performers aren't even credited, the music serves it's purpose. Beautiful.

Very enjoyable collection of Early Spanish Opera.......2006-01-26

Barroco Espanol Vol 2 is a collection of pieces from early Spanish 'Zarzuelas' or operatic pieces. As the notes state, they are very Italianate, but they have a few surprises here and there. Much of it indeed sounds very Italian, even with touches of a Mozart-like sound.

I recommend this if you are especially fond of Spanish and Spanish influenced music. Otherwise, the interest may be a bit academic. I must say, however, that the vocals by Senorita Almajano may be worth the price of admission!
