In celebration of Beastie Boys' 24th anniversary, Capitol Records has decided to pay tribute to Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "Adrock" Horovitz and Adam "MCA" Yauch-- known collectively as Beastie Boys, with the release of Solid Gold Hits. (No, the group is not breaking up.) The infomercial-worthy 15-track compendium distills the NYC trio's storied career into an ADD-friendly digest format: Covering the Boys' first platinum-mining expeditions with "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn" and "Fight For Your Right" through west coast detours "Shake Your Rump," "So What'cha Want" and "Sabotage," up to last year's return to #1 with the million-plus-selling To The 5 Boroughs' "Ch-Check It Out," "An Open Letter To NYC" and "Triple Trouble" -and all points between.

It's what you want on the road........2007-05-31
It's Capitol puttin' out the s*%t like Endless Summer for the California Kids bustin' their own in the early 60s. Well, This is decent for a Saturday or even Sunday drive. I think anything off of Paul's Boutique on a compilation makes you want to just ditch this shti and listen to that whole album.. but I think I just found out the same siht happens when you listen to like Pet Sounds or Rubber Soul or like you know what I mean .. the Beatsies are mackin'.......
Ear-splitting goodness.......2007-03-25
Every time you play this album, an angel gets its wings.
Okay, maybe not that. But your neighbors will probably tell you to turn it down. Hey, just tell them you've got a right to party.
i don't own this..........2006-11-08
..and what's the point? All of these songs (minus a few) are on the anthology, along with countless others. The Beastie Boys didn't put this out, their record label did. It's just way for corporate to make money. If you consider yourself a real Beastie Boys fan, that is you're interested in all the other music they made that wasn't put on radio, then don't buy this. If you occasionally heard them on the radio and Fight For Your Right is your favorite song, then go ahead. The Beastie Boys are much more than just their greatest hits. To fully appreciate them, you have to listen to an album all the way through.
When Rap Was Cool.......2006-08-21
If you're a Beastie Boys Fanatic, you will love this. It's got the best of the best. Who can't listen to "Hey Ladies" and "Intergalactic" over and over again? A great compilation for a road trip or your next retro party.
great introduction to beastie boys.......2006-03-03
if you are new to the beastie boys (like me) this is a great first album to get. it has all their best song and no filler. heres a song by song breakdown.
1. So What'cha Want - 4/5 - Great intro song, but not the best.
2. Brass Monkey - 5/5 - Amazing song, the best song from their debut album.
3. Ch-Check it Out - 5/5 - Best song on the album, although MCA's voice sounds shot compared to some of the earlier songs. Also, I think the Just Blaze Remix is better if you can find that.
4. No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn - 3/5 - not one of my favorites, but its still pretty good.
5. Hey Ladies - 5/5 - Great song, really shows off the genious of Paul's Boutique.
6. Pass The Mic - 3/5 - The worst song on the album, although it's ok.
7. An Open Letter to NYC - 4/5 - Great tribute to NYC, but like with Ch-Check it Out, MCA's voice isn't as good as in the older songs.
8. Root Down - 4/5 - Great song.
9. Shake Your Rump - 4/5 - Another one from Paul's Boutique, although not as good as Hey Ladies.
10. Intergalactic - 5/5 - The first Beastie Boys song I ever heard, back when it came out in 98, great song.
11. Sure Shot - 4/5 - Great song, the only rap song I've ever heard that successfully incorporates a flute.
12. Body Movin' (Fatboy Slim Remix) - 5/5 - Takes the original, which was an ok song, and turns it into something sublime.
13. Triple Trouble - 4/5 - Great song, but it has the same beat as Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang.
14. Sabotage - 4/5 - Great song, more metal than rap.
15. Fight for your Right - 5/5 - How can you not love this song?

Customer Reviews:
one of the 80s finest musical hours.......2006-10-14
When I saw the Gang of Four perform live in the early 80s, bassist Dave Allen, a brilliant musician, was, sadly, gone, though in his place was a fairly decent replacement, Sara Lee. The Go4 were true post-punk progressives, who sought to elevate women rock musicians as the equals of men, at a time when this was still a novel concept. In fact, the Gang of Four's progressivism was partly the result of the earthshaking consequences of 1970s British punk, of which this band was definitely a part (their first recording - the Damaged Goods EP - was released in 1978, still the punk heyday). Their progressivism was also a result of their university education in philosophy, and specifically, in the neo-marxist critical theory of scholars like Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse, and Antonio Gramsci, all of whose work informs the Gang's lyrical content and sensibilities. But these were also smart young men, loaded with talent, living in a world in which they felt alienated. Seeing them live was great! They rocked, and they connected with the audience, a large gathering of mostly Americans who were deeply in to them. And lead singer John King certainly had the funky white guy thing going on, as he was constantly in motion on stage, as guitarist Andy Gill riffed away, fearlessly and energetically.
Here, on Solid Gold, mixing punk, postpunk, funk, dance, and just a bit of free jazz, the Gang of Four wildly succeed in producing one of the 80s finest musical hours. The key to this record are probably the tight rhythms which the band produces. In fact, the bass lines here are anything but simple, whereas the guitar lines are effectively simple, and sharply rhythmic. Also, the band's messages are a bit less cryptic and thus a bit clearer than on Entertainment, which seemed so immersed in social theory (though, of course, this recording has a song called Why Theory?, about praxis, with the clever split of the vocals between King and Gill). The messages of song's like Capital (It Fails Us Now), History's Bunk!, and If I Could Keep It For Myself are pointedly clear, not to mention very insightful.
One other observation. This has some of this band's best, and best known, songs, including What We All Want (which they've recently re-recorded), In The Ditch, Outside The Trains Don't Run On Time, and To Hell With Poverty.
Remastered! (not).......2006-05-01
One of my all time favorite albums. I have listened to the newly remastered version of "Entertainment" side by side with my "Infinite Zero" version from the early 90's. Oooohhhhh! ...now there is so much more midrange... the treble doesn't bleed into white noise nearly as much... its louder too. So I'm ordering this one now and looking forward to the same improvement.
Review edit: I've since recieved this CD. WARNING: it is merely a reissue of the 1996 EMI(UK) release. Remasters have come a long way since then. It should not be promoted as such. I sent it back as I already have the 1995 Infinite Zero(US) release.
"Entertainment" is a genuine 2005 Remaster by Rhino, "Solid Gold" is not.
Powerful.......2006-04-10
Had the band never recorded a suitable follow-up to "Entertainment", they'd probably have left us wondering forever (as with Captain Beefheart) "How great would they have sounded if recorded with a fuller, more life-like sound rather than the dry clipped one they favored (on Entertainment)". Here we get a full sound, lots of bass, lots of everything.
The material's less intricate than on the preceeding LP, and the lyrics maybe a bit less sharp, but they still sound great (infused here by dub reggae, and PIL's bass-driven meanderings). It's must-hear and it rocks and swings hard. The bonus tracks here are quite worthwhile, and I think the live version of "What We All Want" is quietly massive.
The Best Band Ever.......2006-01-24
I feel bad for the guy who got this with Hard. Yes Hard sucks! I got this with Another Day/Another Dollar, which is awesome. Every song is brilliant except for "Why Theory?". Gang Of Four is usually the smartest band ever. One of the few that realize how the environment shapes our behavior. In this song however they say, "How We Think changes How We Act". A common sense belief, but completely wrong. I think we can all agree we many times think something and behave completely differently. To have a causal effect something must happen 100%
of the time. It doesn't. A more accurate statement is how we act changes how we think. Thought is unverbalized speech and not a tangible thing, It can not cause things. Enough philosophy though. This album is awesome. Much darker than Entertainment! musically, but also more varied. This one two punch is one of the best ever. Solid Golid is highly recommended with the brilliant Another Day/Another Dollar.
Required listening.......2005-05-08
Gang of Four's second album is a far more jagged affair then their classic debut "Entertainment". Solid Gold is a much more bass and drum oriented record with Andy Gill's static slashing hoving above. Solid Gold has held up as my favorite GOF album. With the addition of "Another Day Another Dollar" this is a must have - To Hell with Poverty is a classic dance club track from the mid-eighties and the live version of "What we all want" with it's 'in the face' bass brought to the front of the mix are fantastic. Just for clarification, Solid Gold and Another Day were the combo released first (by Rollins), then the mix of SG and Hard which I thought a bit confusing as it skipped "Songs of the Free" which was GOF's third album and quite a strong release (dave allen left and formed Shriekback with Barry Andrews (ex of XTC) and Sara Lee (League of Gentlemen with Robert Fripp) took over the bass duties -

Superb Collection.......2006-07-05
If this mix doesn't make you want to share sweat, you'd better check your pulse.
Its a mans world, Cry baby, Stand by me, the Thrill is gone,.......2001-01-21
What can I say, every tune was fantastic. Brought back old memories of way back when. And just to have all of my favorites on one cd makes it even better. This is a must have for anyone who remember the true oldies but goodies. I play it on my way to work, when I'm on a long riding trip and at home when I just want to kick back and pull out old pictures of the way we were. Who could ever forget BB King singing the Thrill is gone, or James Brown really singing so we could understand him, crooning to Its a mans world.
Great selection of soulful cuts........2000-06-25
I need to make sure there is no mistake: I do NOT get paid by Rhino Records. But, I rave over their efforts unceasingly, just as their ongoing distribution of old music goes on.
This is another brick in their wall. Twenty two cuts, and the majority are either great songs regularly heard (and recorded), or are hard to find classics.
It has been decades since I heard Betty Harris' "Cry To Me", which stands quite strong, thank you very much, alongside Soloman Burke's version. Of a hundred folks who remember The Rolling Stone's early hit "Time Is On My Side" I'd wager less than five ever heard Irma Thomas stomp on it her own self.
Lovers of classic soul music will find these treasures alone worth the purchase price. Add Jackie Wilson's "Doggin' Round", Otis, the Enchanters and Sam & Dave, and this is one helluva collection.

It's what'cha want........2005-11-09
This is obviously a collection most will buy for the videos. While the most casual fans will be happy with simply the biggest hits, the DVD will appeal to the fanatics. So, I guess there's something for everyone here. This reminds me of the recent Red Hot Chili Peppers "Greatest Hits" with DVD, meaning music and videos, but only the basics. Still, the songs are classic, and who does video better than the Beasties? Remember the "Fight For Your Right To Party" video, or how about the awesome "Hey Ladies" and "Intergalactic"? Not to mention the 70's cop spoof "Sabotage". This might not be as great as the "Sounds Of Science" anthology song-wise, but with the added videos, it's "Solid Gold".

One Of The Best Albums Ever To Come Out Of Canada.......2007-01-06
The songwriting and musical talents of Bill Henderson and Brian "Too Loud" MacLeod meld with crystal-clear production and engineering in perfect harmony. Opus X has everything a music fan could want, from the radio hits "Whatcha Gonna Do" and "Secret Information" to the hard-rocking "Don't It Make Ya Feel" and "Really Don't Mind" to the haunting "Midnight". This album has frequently been referred to as half-Chilliwack, half-Headpins, but to me every song flows smoothly together from beginning to end. Check out MacLeod's drum passages in "Lean On Me", all performed and recorded in one take.
Opus X remembered.......2006-03-01
I am desiring to get this album again, this cassette slipped through the cracks on DJ lists. I remember seeing Chilliwack singing this song on "Solid Gold" in 1982 - I was bought. "Whatcha Gonna Do" started the album right, then came the great "Secret Information," which to me had the complete blend of bass, rhythm and harmony. Ended with "Midnight," which began slow but kicked in at the end. This album showed Chilliwack the ability to versify the talents through their music. I lost the album years ago but the memories of that album is still there. If you do get it, you won't be disappointed.
My Favorite CD By Chilliwack.......2004-01-07
This would be one of my top 10 desert island CDs. It's one of those albums I can listen to straight through without skipping a song.
It's the perfect blend of Hard Rock and Pop. Bill Henderson always had a knack of writing perfect AOR music. With the help of Ab Bryant and the late Brian MacLeod, they came up with nine perfect little gems.
This was the last album with this line-up. MacLeod and Bryant were splitting time between Chilliwack and The Headpins. Bill Henderson always felt that this album was 1/2 Chilliwack, 1/2 Headpins, which really isn't a bad thing. I always felt Brian MacLeod was was an exceptional singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He left us much too soon.
On this album you'll get the hits "What'cha Gonna Do?," and "Secret Information." "Lean on Me" isn't the classic version of the song you hear on oldies radio, rather, it's an excellent song in it's own right -- one of the highlights of the album. The best song on the album to me is "Don't it Make You Feel Good," a great guitar driven piece.
One thing that you'll notice about this album is the crystal clear production. The only thing that keeps this album from having five stars is the packaging. If you're going to pay $32 for an import CD, you expect a little more bang for your buck. Granted, when it comes down to it, it's the music that's worth paying for, it's nice to have the extras that go along with it. For instance, it'd have been nice if the lyrics were included (as the album had)AND the original photos from the album. Flesh it out a little. It would have been nice to have had the original package.

Classic Freestyle Hitz.......2006-03-03
The last reviewer based his comments on the fact he purchased a 'bootleg' cd.
The fact is this nothing less than a classic collection of Dance/Freestyle music from that time period.
Every song makes you wanna dance, breakdance, or have a block party. Buy this cd, just make sure you purchase it from the right person.
DO NOT BUY THIS.......2005-11-29
This is a bootleg CD (CD-R) AND it has the wrong songs on it. No liner notes, just a bootleg CD that already had fingerprints on it when I opened it. This is a total rip-off! I already informed Amazon.com about this so I can get a full refund.

Customer Reviews:
Solid dance music.......2007-05-12
I like all the tracks except for the tangos. They are too fast for my taste, but the sound quality is excellent for all.
41 well recorded tracks.......2007-04-12
All of the tracks are played by the Dennis Hayward Orchestra. If you like the Columbia Ballroom Orchestra, or the Swiss Ballroom Orchestra, buy this double album! There are 41 well recorded instrumental tracks with carefully measured tempos. You will enjoy practicing to this music and for just 30 cents a tune!
There is a full orchestral sound in the waltzes and foxtrots on the first disc. The quicksteps are exceptional and they make me want to dance. Disc two is better than the first. It makes good use of brass and woodwind solos, and the Latin percussion is well done. The rumbas are especially good. Let's hope there is a volume two.
Here are the titles, durations, and suggested dance for each track:

Album Description
Gang Of Four were a British new wave band formed in 1980 by lead singer Jon King and guitarist Andy Gill. They had four albums hit the Billboard charts between 1981 & 1983. Two of those albums comprise this 2-on-1 CD. Hard is making its worldwide CD debut and Solid Gold has been out of print for years. Wounded Bird. 2003.

Mismatched Twofer.......2006-05-29
At the time of "Hard" & "Songs of The Free" most fans of the Gang of Four's new direction as a descent into trite pop/new wave fare. However, I enjoyed both albums, as I was not one of those teenage males too caught up in the punk masculinity mystique to venture out into other musical genres. Many other groups (The Stranglers, The Damned...) were doing the same thing, after punk seemed to have exhausted its possibilities. The Gang of Four did it quite well, even if they didn't reach pop stardom like Billy Idol in their attempt.
I like both albums, my quibble with this release is that they are mismatched. "Hard" is better of coupled with "Songs of The Free" than "Solic Gold", not to mention that it is completely unavailable on CD. Whoever put this together did a poor job. Why didn't Rhino release this? No extras to the album tracks (live, non-lp stuff), hence the deduction of 1 star.
Hard is what it is, and is a quite good New Wave funk album.......2005-05-05
I find the reviews here to be somewhat revisionist in their take on this double lp CD. Hard WAS commercially viable, scoring a fairly big pop hit with "Is it Love". It is really a fun album with lots or classic ironic GO4 lyrics and a fair sprinkling of the now fully developed lacerating guitar sound (Gill took his guitar sound to the logical extreme on Songs of the Free). Nearly every british post-punk band went in this basic direction, Captain Sensible scored big pop hits with his funk-rap and pure pop, 999 was a seminal punk band that went farther into disco with "13th Floor madness", Japan began their career with the most unstoppable mix of disco and snarl perhaps ever in the late 70's. The list goes on and not all went to funk/soul, some just went pop. Take American bands like Bad Religion (Into the Unknown is folk pop) and TSOL (not sure what Beneath the Shadows is but I think they may have been trying to copy the Damned's Strawberries). By 1983 there was no where to go with post-punk in England and not much of an audience. With the rise of Hardcore and bands like Discharge and GBH, you would have to get harder to try to fit in and the kids would have laughed at it, seeing GO4 as posuer old men, like they did the Stranglers.
Let's remember that Solid Gold was probably the reason they turned more pop for Songs of the Free. It was not very successful and I did not know many folks that liked it back then. I find the Yellow EP to be the best of their early "darker" sound. Solid Gold almost has none of the melody and hooks that all 3 of their other lps have, including Entertainment. It was a tough listen in the early 80's with all that was coming out at the same time. Sure, now that the Ramone are considered heroes instead of the zeroes they were seen as at the time by the masses, Solid Gold deserves a listen. But when people say GO4 was a huge influence etc, they are usually talking about Entertainment and Songs of the Free, even though they may not admit it now. Why do you think it took so long to put it on CD in the US? It didn't sell! It was the truly failed experiment, sadly.
All in all, this is a great CD from start to end and worth having. Songs of the Free is an absolute must as well as the US pressing of Entertainment (if only for the 4 song Yellow EP included which has different recordings of the 2 songs that made it onto Solid Gold).
Hard? Wimpy. Solid Gold? Indeed.......2005-03-21
I got into Gang of Four when I was in college in 1996. I found a vinyl copy of "Entertainment!" for $5 at a now defunct record store in New Brunswick, NJ and soon afterwards, bought as much stuff as I could get my hands on. Among others, I bought "Songs of the Free" and "Hard" on vinyl, though I couldn't find a copy of "Solid Gold" at the time, so I contented myself by copying my college's radio station's Lp copy. At the time, I thought it was a good album, but nowhere near on the level of "Entertainment!". In the same radio station's record library, I came upon a copy of "Hard". At that point, the record was 12 years old or so and someone had written "wimpy" on it. After purchasing "Hard", I agreed. In general, I really like their 1st 3 Lps, but "Hard" was just abominable.
Which brings me to this reissue. When I bought it a few years ago, I was psyched to finally see "Solid Gold" issued on CD here in the U.S. and I bought it despite having no desire at all to re-purchase "Hard". What I found even weirder about this reissue was that the packaging (the lyrics and insert) is all for "Hard" and "Solid Gold", the far superior album, is there almost as an afterthought. Regardless, the sound is great and while "Hard" is as execrable as I remembered it being many years before, "Solid Gold" is much better than I remember it being and while still not being as great as "Entertainment!", is still a great early '80s post-punk Lp that's alternately challenging, yet catchy and listenable as well (and not to mention, very influential to many current new-new wave or post-post punk bands). If you don't believe me, try "Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time", "If I Could Keep It For Myself", "Hole in the Wallet" or "In the Ditch" and see for yourself!
So, to sum up, I would've given this 4.5 stars if it was "Solid Gold" alone and if the packaging was a bit better, but I had to knock it down for the inclusion of "Hard" and for the careless packaging. Oh and it's too bad that they couldn't have included the "Another Day, Another Dollar" ep as well, but that's included on the UK reissue of "Solid Gold", which I actually recommend instead of this one.
Buried treasure........2004-09-20
I bought this CD a little over a year ago and, having already been a huge fan of the Entertainment! album, I was eager to hear what other sounds this band had in store for me. As I drove out of the Amoeba parking lot, I chose Hard/Solid Gold as the first of the many purchases I had made that night to listen to first. Words can't describe my disappointment--rather than hearing a band even similar to the one I heard on Entertainment!, I instead got some cheesy post-disco 80's pop that clearly had the same singers as the Gang of Four that I knew and loved, maybe even some similar guitar work, but all in all left me feeling flat and empty with it's faux Motown backup singers and drum machine beats. If I wanted a GOOD version of this sound, I would have purchased a New Order album.
Rather than attempting to return this CD (it was a used purchase) and let some other poor sap pick it up and continue the cycle of disappointment, I threw it in the back of my car, where it fell under the seat and remained for over a year. I knew that the quality of a band's output has some ebb and flow, but I didn't want this sound to taint my love of the Entertainment! album.
Although I realized at the time that the CD had two albums on it, I naively figured that whoever put the package together would have put the better album first. Thus, if Hard was placed at the beginning, then I didn't even want to bear witness to the horrors that would have been lying in wait for me on Solid Gold . . . what a foolish mistake.
Last week, I found that CD under the seat in my car and decided to give it another try. Sure enough, the first few tracks of Hard sounded just as miserable as I remembered, but when I skipped ahead to track 10, "Paralysed," the first track on the Solid Gold album, I found the Gang of Four I knew and loved. Here was the next logical progression after entertainment. Even artier and weirder than its predeccessor, Solid Gold had everything I wanted from this band, pushing the formula to newer and greater places. Taking cues more from Entertainment! tracks like "Anthrax" and "Not Great Men" as oppossed to more melodic numbers like "Return the Gift" (great song), "I Found that Essence Rare," and "Glass," Solid Gold is what a sophomore release from a band should be.
Describing why I like Solid Gold is a bit of a challenge . . . it's somewhat of an indescribable aesthetic, but if you listen to the way Andy Gill scrapes his guitar strings at the end of "Cheeseburger," the stuttered beats on songs like "What We All Want," the unbridled energy of "Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time," John King's direct, often staccato vocals and liberal use of the melodica, the interplay between the bass and drums, or the way each song picks you up, then you'll get it. If you liked aspects of Entertainment! that pushed the envelope a bit, you should get it too.
Also, the lyrics are still great, continuing to touch on themes like urban alienation, the slavery of work, social politics, gender issues, and a general confusion/obsession with the inner workings and failings of human social interaction.
As many others have stated, there's a whole slew of contemporary bands that owe a debt of gratitude and maybe even a few royalties to the sound that Gang of Four forged on Entertainment! and Solid Gold. The earlier (and better) Rapture albums certainly borrow a bit from G.o.4., and Q and Not U's sound bears many similarities as well, especially when they use the melodica.
My only question is: who played drums and bass on this album? The lineup it lists on the CD was certainly for the Hard album, but the music on Solid Gold sounds as if Hugo Burnham and Dave Allen were still filling these spots. I'd be interested to know if anyone has that information.
Anyways, what are you still reading this for? Get out there, pick up a copy of Hard/Solid Gold, immediately skip to track 10, and enjoy!
Solid Gold is FANTASTIC.......2004-05-21
while everyone reading this is most likely familiar with how fantastic "Solid Gold" is, the real curiosity here is why "Hard" is part of the package. While "Entertainment" and "Solid Gold" represent one of the best one-two punches in early 80's post-punk, "Hard" jumps forward beyond "Songs Of The Free" and offers a very unbalenced representation of how Gang Of Four transitioned from an band tettering on the edge, to finally comforming to the rest of the drivel that closed out the 80's. "Solid Gold" is certainly worth the price alone as there is still nothing quite like it out there. Dissonent, jagged and ultra-intense, it is by far my favorite album from the band as it represented the best of "Entertainment" tossed into an even deeper frenzy....after such a gem, there was no where to go but "Out" - "Songs Of The Free" still had some very strong tracks but it was evident that the band said what they wanted to say already and seemed to begin viewing their output as an inside joke to exploit the commercial elements they hated so.... Here's to the ultimate musical definition of sarcasm
