It's been a long wait for the solo debut from Irish icon Dolores O'Riordan. After all, the Cranberries issued their swan song in 2001. After their break up, O'Riordan collaborated with Germany's Jam and Spoon, Italy's Zucchero, and David Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti. She also appeared, as herself, in the 2006 comedy Click. All the while, she toiled away on her first solo effort. Fortunately, good things come to those who wait. Co-produced by Youth (the Verve, U2), Are You Listening? is a throwback to 1980s-era Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sinead O'Connor--sweeping keyboards, forceful drumming, and muscular guitar work. It may seem like a melodramatic move, but the music never overwhelms the slight yet steely figure at the center of the maelstrom, particularly on the lilting "Ordinary Day" and haunting "Black Widow." Cranberries fans expecting something more demure may be taken aback, but O'Riordan's supple voice should win over most skeptics. And lyrically, she compensates with tender words inspired by her husband ("Apple of My Eye"), the death of her mother-in-law ("Black Widow"), and the birth of her youngest child ("Ordinary Day"). --Kathleen C. Album Description

2007 solo debut from the former Cranberries vocalist. Written and recorded in Dublin and Canada and featuring production from Dan Broadbeck and acclaimed musician/producer Youth, whose many production credits include Paul McCartney and U2. I have been a Cranberries fan since the first time I heard their music. Dolores O'riordan's voice was simply magical. Listening to her singing always sent chills up my spine and gave me a buzz. Her original, intense, and emotional voice was a saving grace to much of the junk music that overwhelms us today. I was heartbroken to learn that the Cranberries split and went on to individual projects, but as long as Dolores was still singing, I'd surely be buying. And then she gives us "Are You Listening?" And well......What happened???!

She told us her solo album would be something different from anything she's ever done before. Something more .... AHEM... "experimental" (very overused word in the music industry and hardly applicable considering so much pop garbage sounds alike). Well, Dolores, where's the originality in this album? This album is much more < > POP sounding than her previous work with the Cranberries. The musical originality is absent from most of the songs. It sounds like she uses typical pop arrangements, sounds, and tricks and as a result the album sounds like very all-purpose, generic pop music with Dolores O'riordan's voice sing the predictable rhyming lyrics. Very uninspired music.

Dolores does quite a bit of whisper (breathy) singing on this album. Usually when I hear that I think of a singer who's vocals aren't as strong as they used to be and who literally CAN'T sing crisply, clearly, or as strong as before. I hope that's not the case with Dolores' voice, but all the whisperings on this album make for a weak sounding voice. An annoyance when I'm eagerly waiting for her to just SING.

As for the lyrical content, Dolores continues to sing about the same subjects - her children, her husband (and her love and/or desperate need for him in her life), her other family & loved ones, people who put her down (remember the song "Loud and Clear"? well, she still sings defensively to people who hurt her and this time it's in the song "Loser"), and her efforts to evolve and grow as a human being. Dolores' lyrics tend to be simply put and straightforward. I've always like that. Listening closely to her lyrics give me the impression that she is still trying to find herself and climb out of a dark, murky something that is taking up more than enough space in her life.

I find most of the songs plain, uninspired and very forgettable. There are some standouts, namely BLACK WIDOW and OCTOBER. Black Widow is a song she wrong while going through the death of her Mother-in-law from cancer. She sings the song passionately and with a little creative use of her voice. It is heavy on the electronic musical *help* though. I wonder how the acoustic version would sound. OCTOBER is another song that I really liked at first. When I heard it the band Linkin Park came to mind. This one sounds like a Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive" song. Meaning, "I may be down but I'm not OUT!" It's a You Go Girl! song and I have a soft spot for those.

My biggest complaint with this album is that Dolores just doesn't sound very alive when she's singing. I don't mind that she sings about the same topics. She could be singing about her cornflakes cereal for all I care. But sing it like it's the best stuff you've ever tasted and every bite tastes absolutely wonderful and puts you in 7th heaven! That kind of energy is missing from this album. Maybe Dolores went the way of some other artists (Tori Amos, Sinead O'connor, Alanis Morrisette to name a few) would could sing beautifully and with such raw passion when they were angry or unhappy, but somehow lost some of that spark when intense dark emotions left them. Can't they be just as intense when they're happy?

Dolores hasn't done a complete 360 (a la Sinead O'connor) with her voice, it still sounds great. But in this album it's sounding a little more flat and dull. Not a bad effort for her first solo album, but I hope for a better sophmore solo album. Buy it and listen for yourself.

What a great debue solo album. I found the first half of the album awsome some of the second half dropped off a bit, but over all a great album. If you like the cranberries I think you will really like this.

Even though there are bad comments for this album, as a Cranberries fan I think this CD is AWESOME!!! It's logical that Dolores try to make something different than the songs from the Cranberries. This new album shows that Dolores has everything to succeed!!! With a totally new style this album shows the taste of music that Dolores Has. All the songs in the album are wonderful!! My favourites, Ordinary Day, When we were young, Angel Fire, Apple of my eye, Black Widow, Loser, ALL OF THEM!!!

Here in Mexico, there's no too much promotion of this album, but I think that it has to have that promotion because it's a really masterpiece. This album combines new rythms, sounds and types of music that makes you imagine a lot of wonderful things. And the best part, the voice of Dolores... She has the most wonderful voice in this planet.

It arrived in less than a week and in good condition. The music is a bit different than that of the Cranberries but to me it still does it. Dolores is a very talented artist and any real fan should have in their collection this cd!

I was a HUGE fan of the Cranberries' first three albums and Dolores is definately on my Top 10 favorite singers list but the group's last two attempts seemed... weird. But this album... classic Dolores. Back to the days of Linger and Zombie. Love it. I am SO glad she decided to grace us with more of her melodic voice.

This is a must have if you are not familiar with zarzuela (Madrid's response to Vienna's operetta). It's a nice combination of arias sung by Caballe in beautiful voice and joined by her husband tenor Bernabe Marti for the duets. The CD comes with translations for non Spanish speaking which will greatly improve your satisfaction.
Caballe is in as beautful voice as ever and feels at home with this non very taxing repertoire. She doesn't overindulge in her other times frequent "floatiness" and is very expressive throughout. Thogh sometimes when some coloratura is needed she tends to drop the consonants blurring her enunciation of the words. We are used to this from her opera recordings though she's not as bad as Sutherland.
Marti is a nice tenor but is not in the same league as Caballe. That's why he never got star recognition though he made a few recordings whith his wife, like Bellini's "Il Pirata". His is a lyrical tenor, a little throaty but with nice projection of the sound. He sounds a little strained over the "passagio" but hits all the notes. More importantly, he compensates for his lack of vocal lustre with burning impersonations of his characters. Passionate and burning in some, tender and caressing in others. In this respect is better than his wife who is a little more doll like hidding behind her vocal resources. So I specially enjoyed the many and varied duets in this recording.
Strongly recommended.

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this,then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

I am very fond of Mariachi music and I must confess that I had never heard of Maria Dolores Pradera. I heard one of her songs for about two minutes on internet radio and I was struck by how "different" her voice is. On the spot, I decided to purchase the CD.

This magnificent Madrileña has become famous for singing the classic popular songs of Latin America. She is a masterful interpreter of this music, from the compositions of Argentina's Atahualpa Yupanqui, to Mexico's Jose Alfredo Jimenez, and has an astounding repertoire of over 500 songs.

Though her recordings have sold in the millions around the world, sadly, she's been vastly under-appreciated in the U.S. Her mellow voice is exquisite, her style a blend of simplicity and sophistication, and she's an enchanting presence as a perfomer, with incredible beauty and elegance.

In this collection of 20 songs, every track is a winner. The musicianship and arrangements are marvelous, and the sound is good. Total time is 54'18.
This is a great CD for peaceful listening, and would also be the perfect accompaniment for a quiet dinner party, to go with the best of wines. There is a flowing grace to this music, a perfect balance...one of the reasons she is known as La Gran Dama de la Cancion.

I borrowed this CD from one of my friends. I didn't realize the charm of her songs until March 1st, 2002. That afternoon, I had a drink with my friend. By accident, my friend played this CD. Maria's rich voice and her powerful emotion surprisingly touched me. I started crying. I don't speak Spanish at all. But I really got sympathetic response from her beautiful voice.
Additionally, it's this CD that makes me indulge into latin ballads and boleros.

Maria Dolores Pradera has been my absolute favorite singer since childhood. No one comes even close to interpreting the awesome classics of Latin American Music in such a beautiful and heartfelt way. I grew up listening to the music of Maria Dolores from my mothers tape player. Only now do I realize the beauty of her music. Her songs of broken relationships are intesified with her powerful voice. The anguish of a lost love is realistically rendered through her voice. The pain projected in her voice is the closest replication of the true emotions of the songs. Dolores Gray, fabulous, Tony-Award winning (for a show which ran on Broadway only 1 week!) star of stage and Fifties screen, gives beautiful renditions of standards on this, her only studio album. Somewhat of a cult figure (for all the Right reasons!), Gray was a strong vocalist in the tradition of Ethel Merman, fully capable of projecting over and above a big Broadway orchestra and to the very last row of the balcony in those pre-amplification days; she needed no body microphone to be heard distinctly and clearly. This album was a departure for her: soft ballads, lushly orchestrated, and sung in a sultry, whispery, close-to-the microphone voice. The selections are romantic rather than melancholy, and are perfect for a candle-light dinner, or a relaxing soak in the tub after a hard day.

While this album has been on cd before, first as a Japanese import, then as part of EMI's British two-albums-on-one-cd series, this release is crucial for the addition of several singles Gray also recorded for Capitol, including a great (and different) rendition of one of her signature songs, "There'll Be Some Changes Made", which she sang in the MGM film "Designing Woman." Her costars in that production, well worth seeking out on DVD, were Gregory Peck, Lauren Bacall, and in his only onscreen appearance, Broadway and Hollywood dancer-choreographer Jack Cole.
Looking forward to Decca Broadway hopefully re-issuing her Phillips LP "Dolores Gray Live at London's Talk of the Town" on cd!

Broadway star...movie actress...Dolores Gray had many hats during her long showbusiness career, but the talented songstress only recorded one album, under a brief contract with Capitol Records. WARM BRANDY makes it's compact disc premiere here, and no doubt many people will be anxious to grab it.

To the hardcore Broadway musical fans, Dolores Gray is one of the all-time classic voices. She rose to fame playing the title role for the 1947 London production of "Annie Get Your Gun", then got cast in Broadway's notorious flop "Carnival in Flanders". Gray moved to Hollywood in the mid-1950s, where she snagged roles in the M-G-M movies "Kismet", "Designing Woman", "The Opposite Sex" and "It's Always Fair Weather". Mainstream movie fame alluded her, and she returned to Broadway to star as Frenchie in the musical version of "Destry Rides Again", and later played Lorraine in the ill-fated "Sherry!". Gray replaced Angela Lansbury in the 1974 London production of "Gypsy"; played Dorothy Brock for the Broadway and touring productions of "42nd Street", as well as Carlotta in a 1986 London revival of "Follies". She sadly passed away in 2002.

During her time with M-G-M, Gray recorded a series of singles as well as her WARM BRANDY album for the Capitol label. Here on this compact disc from DRG, her entire Capitol output has been compiled for the very first time.

WARM BRANDY features a mix of musical theatre favourites and jazz standards, and Gray wraps her velvet chops around each and every one of them. Highlights include "You Go to My Head" (sung in an arrangement that'll definitely go to YOUR head!), "You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me" (a 1930s chestnut), and "Shangri-La" (another exotic number which works well with Gray).

The series of bonus singles will also thrill the long-time Gray fans: "There'll Be Some Changes Made" (from the "Designing Woman" soundtrack), "Fool's Errand", "I'm Innocent", and "My Mama Likes You".

The remastering job for WARM BRANDY is a little muddy in places, but the selection of bonus singles are as fresh as paint.

This jazzy collection of ballads contains the album "Warm Brandy" and all additional sides recorded by Dolores Gray at the height of her fame in 1957. Long out-of-print, this is a pristine example of this premiere vocalist who has unjustly been largely forgotten. Dolores Gray was primarily a Broadway performer (check out "Two on the Aisle" and "Destry Rides Again" as two Original Cast Recordings that showcase her at her finest). She had a voice for the ages, superior to Merman and all of her contemporaries. Unfortunately, her tempestuous nature undermined her career but what she left us is of the highest quality. She worked briefly for MGM (her Lalume in "Kismet" is definitive) and displayed a natural flair for wry comedy that was never fully utilized. Our loss.

Still, it is that magnificent voice that remains eternal and "Warm Brandy" is quite an unusual foray for Gray. Here, she eschews the roof-raising sound that was better than the "Merm" for a gentler, jazzier approach to some classic material. Quite a sophisticated album, "Warm Brandy" displays the broad range of Gray's instrument and her exquisitely warm and nuanced interpretations are the antithesis of that famous "belt". One can't imagine Merman or any of Gray's contemporaries pulling this off so effectively. From the gentle opener "Shangri-La" to the sultry "How Long Has This Been Going On", Gray shows she's got the goods. Her pitch, phrasing and intonation are perfection itself, but it is her interpretive ability that makes these songs live. "Speak Low" may be definitive, and "Don't Blame Me" smolders with her special brand of sexy cooing. As a bonus track (one of four) we get "There'll Be Some Changes Made", a brassy piece of dynamite from Gray's last movie, "Designing Woman", and Gray shines in her most familiar element.

Still, "Warm Brandy" is class in every respect and deserves to find an audience who'll rediscover the immense talent Ms. Gray possessed. Let us never forget.

Where can one start to tell the story of the great Dolores Keane?
This Best Of Dolores Keane collection is long overdue.Dolores inherited her singing from her famous Sean Nos (old gaelic singers)Aunts, Rita and Sarah.Based in Galway in the West of Ireland.Dolores possibly came to prominence while doing lead singing with Irish Trad specialists De Dannan.Her rendition of Galway Bay is unbelievable here,also Far Away In Australia,Never Be The Sun,and Mick Hanleys My Love Is In America,all exellent.Some of the older tunes like Lili Marlene are nice too,and Let It Be by the Beatles is fantastic.All in this as I say was long overdue.I personally consider Dolores as the greatest Female Irish Vocalist of them all,yet commercially she hasn't been marketed very well.When one considers that Emmylou Harris is her greatest fan,and also Nathalie Merchant(ex 10,000 Maniacs)has said in the past that Dolores has been a big influence on her,well then what are you waiting for?Just go and purchase the hauntingly beauitiful voice of the legend Dolores Keane.Guranteed not to dissappoint.

This is very good Irish folk music. I have most of her CD's and I am very happy with them. "Caledonia" and "Never Be The Sun" are two of my favorites from this recording. Be sure to try her other music. It is wonderful.

Dolores' brother, Sean Keane, is also an excellent choice to listen to. "The Man That I Am" and "No Stranger" are my favorites.

I listen to a lot of music. I listen to a fair amount of Irish music, mostly haphazardly. Probably my favorite recorded sounds are memorable female voices (no, not Streisand among them, good Gawd!), a random sample might include early Supremes, Emmylou Harris, Renee Fleming, Etta James, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Sleater Kinney, very early Grace Slick and, before her, the first female singer with Jefferson Airplane, Signe Toly Anderson. Given all that, how the hell did I come this far in life without encountering Dolores Keane? It's inexplicable, but all that matters in the end is to have finally stumbled on her phenomenal singing. You should too, post-haste. My first hearing was in John Prine's duets CD on A Town This Size. Then, almost immediately thereafter, I found When Irish Girls Grow Up, the best thing on Tom Russell's uneven CD, The Man From God Knows Where. On Best Of the voice is younger, with some of the songs probably more than a decade old. I find its full-throated huskiness even more attractive now, but this CD is a spectacular introduction to her work. Lion in a Cage is a vibrant Afro-beat tribute to Nelson Mandela. Most of the other songs are ballads of what we Irish do best -- longing for places and people or both that are far distant in time and space. My Love is in America, Galway Bay, Teddy O'Neill, and Far Away in Australia are the best examples. She includes three covers -- Let It Be, Van the Man's Have I Told You Lately, and Linda Thompson's Telling Me Lies. For my taste, only the latter matches up to the other tracks here. Similarly, The Island -- contrasting the horror of conflict with the personal peace of love -- is a concept which just doesn't quite come off as a song. Those, however, are quibbles too inconsequential to be even minor. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on this CD now. It will be weeks before it comes out of your player. As for me, I'll be sampling all her other work. Sometimes the later discoveries in life are the best of all.

I was not familiar with Ms. Keane until I heard her in duet with John Prine on In Spite of Ourselves CD, and was totally intrigued with her voice. Now, after listening to the "best" of Delores (which is a modest description of the tunes on this CD)....I am totally enthralled with her music. I have played the CD over & over and find it more enchanting each play. I can't believe I have, at the age of 50, just discovered the delights of celtic music. It is a most pleasing listen.

I bought this album on a whim while in Ireland and have been unable to stop listening to it. Many of the songs are haunting tributes to the Irish experience and the arrangements are lovely in their simplicity and clarity. This is a wonderful find!

Dolores Keane has a very rich, soothing voice. "Storm In my Heart" is beautiful, could listen to this song over and over. "Never Be the Sun" "Solid Ground" and "I Courted a Soldier" are very good as well. If you like relaxing, Irish music, listen to this CD. You will not be dissapointed!

I first heard Dolores Keane's outstanding song "Storm in My Heart" on a Celtic CD collection, so I decided to give "Solid Ground" a try. I am happy that I did: this album is wonderfully listenable, and Keane sings with a voice that is both moving and enchanting. She does a fine version of Steve Winwood's "The Finer Things." Like all the songs on the CD, it's sung with the warmth and heart that is the hallmark of excellent Celtic music.

    In the beginning, Cecilia Bartoli seemed to do one thing better than anybody, i.e., Rossini arias, which would not guarantee a long career even for a singer of her ebullience. This live performance from the Teatro Olympico in Vincenza, Italy, shows how much she's expanded, both linguistically and musically. The first five selections reflect her newfound specialty, early opera. The three Caccini selections from the 17th century--accompanied by small string ensemble--are deeply felt and stylistically convincing enough to make one eager for future forays. She's guilty of spinning out Handel's "Lascia la spina" excessively but hits new heights of virtuosity in Vivaldi's "Agitata da due venti." The rest of the disc is for voice and piano, in a program including both some genuine discoveries by French composer Pauline Viardot-Garcia that reveal the singer's increasing emotional depths and less consequential ones by Donizetti and Rossini. Bartoli also sings Spanish songs, most notably Montsalvatge's "Canto negro," proving that the singer doesn't venture into a new language until she can truly feel in it. Remarkably, her voice maintains its strength and body in the deeper, mezzo-ish regions as well as in the high, soprano-range areas. Might she have two voices? --David Patrick Stearns

    If you think you don't like listening to soprano soloists, you should buy this CD. I must say that I HATE listening to solo singing in general and soprano solo in particular! Well, this lady has stolen my heart! If you see her anywhere on the N American continent, please tell me.

    The one-minute limit for listening on-line will simply not allow you to make a judgement. If I could legally allow you to hear track 5 "Griselda - Agitata da Due Venti" (Vivaldi), you would buy the CD without hearing anything else.

    When I first heard Cecilia Bartoli on "Performance Today", the subject was "Opera Proibita" and I wrote to a friend who teaches voice at a local college and asked "Is she as good as I think, or am I just overreacting?" His simple response was "She's THAT good!"

    This CD is of a live performance and you won't be disappointed except to realize that you COULD have been there, but weren't!

    'Live in Italy' by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, accompanied by pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is, for those of us who do not know Italian and are not avid opera fans, a simply delightful essay in the beauty of the human voice. I am really happy this is not the first Bartoli album I have bought, as others, such as her recordings of French and Italian love songs have more substance to offer (if you don't know the operas from which these pieces are taken) but this recording, with its live ambiance, is a great pleasure all by itself, a very nice change from the somewhat frostier Fraulain Von Otter from the northern climes.

    Although I rarely follow singers, even I am totally disarmed by Cecilia's magic spell of charm that criticism fails me. You will see that most of my reviews of music are about modern or Renaissance music, so for me to go out and lavish praise on her is really something totally out of the ordinary. Then again her singing is out of the ordinary in that it has an instantly recognisable warmth and captivating personality that makes her the outstanding singer of the current generation for me.

    I have been impressed by Cecilia's tendency to avoid the well worn paths of 19th century Italian operas in favour of championing neglected earlier music whether that be Vivaldi, Haydn, or Salieri. She has always talked about how the centre of gravity of Western music seems to be shifting backwards in time, and in her case this means away from the Austro-German tradition to the time when the Italians dominated music. After all the musical elite of even Wagner's time could be still be heard muttering 'but he just isn't as good as those Italian...' at premiers of works such as Tannhäuser and it took a lot of convincing before the the idea of German opera became accepted. This shift backward in time here is exemplified by way the recital begins with the music of Caccini, the father of opera.

    Here on this recording I particularly love the spontaneity of the live music making. Her ability to capture the declamatory nature of much older music such as with Caccini, Vivaldi and Handel suite live recording perfectly. Her manner of conveying the meaning of the words especially when singing in Italian is simply unrivalled in this situation. This is the sort of thing that all too often gets lost in studio recordings so it is a blessing that this is a live recording, where Cecilia seems to just glow. The spontaneity, the sheer magic of the moment - it is all a sheer delight from start to finish. At moments her voice seems so etheral, the hushed and rapt awe of the music making so breathtaking, that it simply beggers belief that the human voice can be so beautiful an instrument. This is what great music making should be all about.

    As far as the recording itself goes I have never noticed any disturbing audience noises anywhere even on my system which tends to makes the slightest of rustling blatantly obvious. The recording engineers do an excellent job of capturing the ambience of the acoustic of the Teatro Olimpico in Vincenzo despite the presence of the audience.

    A stunning recording and an absolute favourite to relax to or just to be inspired by.

    Such was the appreciation from the audience that the director had to request that the audience not stamp their feet as they would set off the alarm system.

    There are hardly words to describe Cecilia Bartoli's remarkable vocal qualities, emotional range and warmth. When I listen to this CD, I am calmed completely. There is an element of comfort in her style. Maybe one could explain it as a lullaby for the soul.

    She has the ability to support the longest of phrases on the back of a single breath all while varying the tone color and dynamic level. Singing seems as effortless as breathing as she becomes emotion all while capturing the drama and mood.

    In this live performance from the Teatro Olympico in Vincenza, Italy, she performs each piece as if she is intimately entwined with the notes. How can music be this sensual and this comforting all at once? It just is. She can express a wide range of emotions, from profound despair to extreme joy.

    The Teatro Olimpico is the worlds' oldest surviving covered theatre. It has fine acoustics, a sky-blue ceiling and marble. Cecilia Bartoli wanted to perform in one of the great treasures of Italy's cultural heritage and this led to this live performance with concert pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet who seems to sense every emotion in Cecilia's voice. It is a sublime combination of talent which is further enhanced by violins, viola, cello, violone, archlute and harpsichord.

    Tu ch'hai le penne, Amore - A song to love asking love to fly to where the heart lies and to promise that his heart and soul were ever hers.

    Amarilli - Delicate and beautiful expression of true love.

    Al fonte, al prato - You can feel spring approaching and this song has a certain energy Cecilia embraces as she sings away troubles and sadness to allow in merriment.

    Lascia la spina - Melancholy. "Old age will creep up on you when your heart does not expect it."

    Agitata da due venti - Cecilia's voice takes flight in this song about waves raging in a stormy sea. She almost becomes the force of the ocean as her voice surges and dives and wow.

    Oiseaux, si tous les ans, K307 - She embodies a haunting vulnerability and the freshness of spring/summer. This song ends far too quickly.

    La pastorella, D528 - Calm beauty to reflect a shepherdess in a meadow. Innocent love.

    Havanaise - It seems like she has a completely different voice in this song as she reaches
    to new ranges in depth. Charmed by a song? Perhaps.

    Hai luli! - A seductive treatment of a song asking "where can my love be?"

    "What's the point of living without a lover?"

    Zaide - High energy and fast paced. A song about an orphan.

    Malinconia, ninfa gentile - Gorgeous and poetic song.

    Ma rendi pur contento - She really captures longing and an almost delicate purity.

    La conocchia - Light and breezy.

    Me voglio fa 'na casa - A song about the desire to build a house surrounded by the sea. Fantasy and happiness.

    Mi langero tacendo - Poignant moment.

    "I shall not complain of my bitter fate;
    but, my beloved, do not hope for me not to love you."

    Mi lagnero tacendo ll resentimento - the sorrow continues. The lover is said to be cruel.

    Mi lagnero tacendo Sorzico - more complaints of cruelty and sorrow. She seems to capture frustration so exquisitely and is that stomping I hear? ;)

    L'Orpheline du Tyrol - The Tyrolean orphan girl. Jean-Yves Thibaudet really takes the stage at first and Cecilia follows almost timidly. A song of tragedy, hunger and suffering.

    Riedi al soglio from Rossini's opera Zelmira left seasoned connoisseurs dazzled. After the aria's final cadence, they broke from their awe-struck silence to add to the shouts of "encore."

    Voi che sapete - Light and yet still dramatic. Desire, torment, ice. All explored fully by her voice. You can hear "torment" when she sings "martir" even if you could not see the words or follow along. Her voice really "flutters" when she sings "palpito e tremo." It is just amazing.

    Canzonetta spagnuola - A muse comes to torment a painter.

    Caro mio ben - A lover grows faint without love. Solitary melodies and you can almost feel the chill in the room or the feeling of despair the lover feels.

    Canto negro - Is there anything she can't sing? This piece might seem completely out of place, but by now everyone is completely drunk with emotion from this performance.

    Seguidille - Pleasure comes when two people are together. Definitely so when Cecilia Bartoli and Jean-Yves Thibaudet perform together. This song is almost a metaphor of the entire intoxicating experience. I just love how the audience goes absolutely wild after this song.

    And too soon, it is over. I look forward to one day viewing the performance on DVD. It will be so much easier to understand the words now that I've literally studied this performance. Knowing the words definitely adds to the subtle emotions and more expressive moments.

    I have loved her low and warm voice ever since the first time I listened to her, the Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. With respect and tenderness she treats the composers, whose works she performs while adding her own dimension. She transports me with her art. It is as if we become one person, and I experience her joy of music. Together we share a glimpse of eternity.

    On this album which was recorded live at the Teatro Olimpico, Vicenza, Italy in 1998 Cecilia Bartoli offers her listeners a varied programme comprised of several composers: Caccini, Haendel, Vivaldi, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Viardot, Schubert, Montsalvatge and Bizet. She's accompanied in Caccini, Haendel and Vivaldi by the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca (Baroque string ensemble) and for the other pieces by Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano. The accompanying booklet contains the lyrics, translations and further information.

    Ms. Bartoli certainly has expanded her musical horizons here in several ways. On this disc she sings in Italian, French and Spanish. I loved her intense and heartfelt rendition of Caccini's and Haendel's arias. The passionate acrobatics of Vivaldi. And the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca gave her a fine support. She made a warm and lovely Cherubino in Mozart's famous 'Voi che sapete'. I also loved her sparkling interpretations of Viardot's 'Havanaise', Rossini's 'Mi lagnero tacendo' or his 'Canzonetta spagnuola'. But Montsalvatge's 'Canto negro' made me feel definitely uncomfortable and Ms. Bartoli herself didn't connect with it. Although I liked her rendition of Bizet's 'Seguedille, I still missed something there. Jean-Yves Thibaudet lends her an excellent, attentive and expressive support.

    Although I would have preferred some more Baroque pieces at this concert, this live album is a keeper for me. Everytime the bundle of pure joy that is Cecilia Bartoli has the power to move me deeply!
