Argentinean popsters Soda Stereo, recorded live at MTV Studios in Miami, are not exactly acoustic as one might suppose from the title, but do project a light touch--somewhere between contemporary and alternative rock genres. There is little audience participation between the eleven songs that feature some psychedelic electronic swirls, cellos, and violas alongside standard rock guitars, as Soda Stereo move through a somewhat limited repertoire. This is an "interactive" CD, with additional content designed to be played both on regular CD players and computer CD-ROM drives, but it proves difficult to get the audio-only tracks on a Mac, and a lot of the footage and graphics are either inconsequential or irrelevant. --Derek Rath

Todavía recuerdo la primera vez que escuche la versión MTV de la Ciudad de La Furia; fue en el Papas and Beer de Ensenada, Baja California. Era un domingo y mi esposa y yo disfrutábamos de una banda local que interpretaba éxitos del Rock en Español. En el momento que el grupo tomo un descanso mi esposa se retiro para ir al tocador, al tiempo de acercar mi cerveza a la boca (una sabrosa y helada Tecate) inicio el acorde de "En la Ciudad de la Furia". Las guitarras me transportaron, el ritmo era tan poderoso y pausado, era increíble, indescriptible como se apodero la rola de mi. Al final de la rola, inmediatamente me dirigí con el DJ para preguntarle en que disco venía esa canción. Esa misma noche ordene el disco en línea. ¡Que titulo mas apropiado tiene el disco! "Confort y Música para Volar" Esa noche en el Papas volé confortablemente con Soda Stereo... Después del Nervio del Volcán de Caifanes, en mi opinión, este es el mejor disco de rock en Español.

A Live Spanish Language Pop, Rock & Jazz Musical Masterpiece !.......2005-08-08

This MTV unplugged album represents musical masterpiece from one of the best Spanish language rock groups of the past twenty years. The Argentinian based rock group Soda Stereo's music is rhythmic, jazzy, hauntingly beautiful, and ultimately different than most of what we hear on the English language pop/rock/jazz stations. This particular live album is one of the better live rock albums I have ever heard. The combination of acoustic and electric guitars along with many other instruments, sounds, and special effects provide an exotic musical landscape of jazz and rock tunes that will haunt your musical imagination forever. I was introduced to this band's music years ago while in Mexico when I entered my Spanish pop/rock music phase. I have listened to so many thousands of songs and groups in my lifetime including all genres from classic rock, progressive rock, pop, new wave, new age, R&B, classical orchestral, renaissance, Irish folk, hard rock, heavy metal, Spanish pop/rock/jazz, rap (yes even rap), hip-hop, club dance, etc. etc. etc. I have heard and listened to it all. You might be familiar with Spanish language rock groups such as Mana. This music is similar but this group is more jazzy, more experimental, and more raw. I had collected at least thirty Spanish language pop/rock albums during the late 1990s and this was one of my favorites. The songs on this album and the performances are absolutely incredible and they transcend language and time the way many great English language rock albums by groups such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, and Pink Floyd have through the years. From the echoing electric jazz guitar of the opening song "En la Ciudad de La Furia", to the Latin pop rhythm and beat of "Entre Canibales", and the progressive and Pink Floyd-ish "Sonoman" and "Planeador" I promise you that this rock album is unlike anything you have ever experienced. Unfortunately after leaving a two decade legacy of unforgettable and timeless Spanish rock based musical work Soda Stereo's members disbanded in 1997. If you are a musical enthusiast who is not afraid to venture out and explore listening to many different kinds of music and you enjoy progressive rock and jazz then this album by Soda Stereo is an absolute must have since it represents some of the most amazing music I have ever heard coming from one of the best and most influential Spanish language rock groups of the 1980s and 1990s.

Superb stuff! A great selection of Soda Stereo songs, not even remotely unplugged and who would want it to be?? Ciudad de la furia is incredible and its worth buying for this version alone.

2 months ago I was doing my chores late at night while listening to MTV en Espanol. I was bored and about to turn of the T.V until i heard the Incredible Unplugged version of "Entre Canibales" by soda stereo (a group that was unknown to me at the time)after being completely captivated by the song I then decided to by the album and quite frankly i was blown away by the incredible first seven unplugged songs, Here it the list

1. La ciudad de la furia- Beautiful! I would have paid the full 15 dollars for this song alone Absolutely brilliant! I really dig Andrea Echevarry's voice

2. Un Misil En mi placard- Excellent acoustic song, Incredibly pleasing to the ears.

3. Pasos- I love how Soda Stereo worked this song with a blend of the acoustic guitar and violins.

4. Entre Canibales- Song that started my craze for this wonderful group.

5. Te Para Tres- Lovely song, love the electric guitar near the end.

6. Angel Electrico- Great song I love How Gustavo Cerati ( Lead Singer) shows his passion for the electric guitar in this song, him and Zeta (Bassist) did a good job.

7. Ella uso mi cabeza como un revolver: Great song, I get fired up everytime I hear it!

GREAT UNPLUGGED: DEFINATELY PARA VOLAR!!!

Soda Stereo Semi - acustico.......2004-12-09

Uno de los ultimos discos de Soda Stereo. Grabado en Miami para MTV, Gustavo Cerati, Charli Alberti y Zeta Bosio graban fantasticas versiones de viejas canciones como "Un misil en mi placard" y "Entre Canibales", al lado de nuevas canciones de estudio como "Planeador".

En cada disco Soda Stereo va cambiando su estilo, cada vez mas a la vanguardia, y sonando cada vez mas electronico. Es interesante la participacion de Andrea Echeverri (Aterciopelados) en "La Ciudad de la Furia", donde escuchamos una excelente voz y un maravilloso arreglo para este clasico de la banda.

La parte "plugged" empieza con "Ella uso mi cabeza como un revolver" y "Angel electrico" donde Cerati deja escuchar su destreza en la guitarra.

Canciones recomendadas: "Angel Electrico", "La Ciudad de la Furia" y "Entre Canibales".

Bachata con tenura.......2001-10-12

Creo que este disco de Junior & Jorge es uno de los mejores de la bachata que haya escuchado. El sonido es fuerte y la voz del cantante líder es muy poderosa. La bachata es suave de principio a fin y no hay ninguna canción mala. De hecho todas son éxitos especialmente "tú vas a volar". Creo que la mayoría de los amantes de la bachata conoce esa canción. Cómprate el disco para que entiendas lo que te estoy diciendo. No hay muchos discos así en el mercado en el que cada canción sea exitosa. Si te gusta el disco de Alex Bueno "Bachata a su Tiempo" te va gustar este de Junior & Jorge. Es un disco único y sin igual.

This CD will make you wonder........2006-02-16

This recording will make you ask yourself why these tuneful and haunting songs of Carlos Guastavino aren't much better known. I had never heard of Guastavino until David Garland played some selections from this CD on WNYC in New York, and I'm very glad he did. With lyrics by some leading Spanish and Latin American poets, these are songs that go straight to the heart.

Tenor Ulises Espaillat and pianist Pablo Zinger sound as though they have lived with this music for awhile. They respond to every nuance of Guastavino's settings, and the performances are caught in wonderfully natural sound.

If you don't speak Spanish, the enclosed booklet's English translations will allow you to follow along with the Spanish lyrics, and, if you're learning Spanish, this recording will help you along while opening a window onto Latin American culture. If you're a Spanish speaker, que suerte!

This recording is a great reminder that there are still many byways of classical music waiting to be discovered.

If Spanish is not your first language,

it was. The songs recorded here are romantic,
emotional and nostalgic. Tenor Ulises Espaillat
sings with sentiment and emotion, and pianist

The Buenos Aires Native Studied Classical Guitar, Piano, Electric and Acoustic Bass, Percussion, and Composition in Argentina and at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He Founded Seru Giran in 1978, One of the Most Popular and Influential Ensembles in Latin Popular Music. Aznar Joined the Pat Metheny Group in 1983, Touring the World Extensively and Recording Three Grammy-awarded Albums. He Released Two Platinum-selling Records with Charly Garcia and also Won the Ace Award of the Argentine Association of Entertainment Critics for Best Rock Album. He Composed the Scores to Several Films, Winning the Sadaic Award (Argentine Composers Association) and Three Silver Condors (Film Critics Association of Argentina) for Best Film Score. He Composed Duets with Mercedes Sosa and Caetano Veloso in 1993 for an Album Sponsored by Unicef for Children's Rights. This is Aznar's Seventh Solo Album to Add to his Long Resume of Work with Other Artists as Well.

All over the map stylistically, but somehow it WORKS!.......2006-12-27

It's hard to categorize the VOLAR SIN ALAS CD. Stylistically, Jimena is all over the map. Yet somehow, it all flows together and manages to work rather well! Part modern Latin Pop, part dance, part "soft" rock ballad, part traditional Mexican, part classy lounge act, and part electro-pop. All of which sound like (no pun intended!) a recipe for musical disaster, but somehow this album seamlessly flows from song to song and style to style. Sometimes featuring grand orchestration with seemingly large string sections--at other times, minimalist in nature with a few guitars and percussion. Emilio Estefan has a hand in the production, so that may explain HOW this odd mix actually works so well! He DOES seem to know what he's doing!

Vocals vary from smooth to edgy depending on the style of the song. I bought this CD on the strength of the title track, VOLAR SIN ALAS, a powerful standout song in my opinion. Well sung and well mixed by somebody who understands how to use channel separation to best effect. Not many songs can come to a near full stop, then roll out the tympanic drum roll and pull you right back in. It's not quite ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA (you may know it as the 2001-A Space Odyssey theme!) or IN THE AIR TONIGHT by Phil Collins, but it's still pretty darn cool!

Also a very interesting, well done cover version of OTRO DIA MAS SIN VERTE, the big Jon Secada hit from the early 90s.

Jimena shares writing credit on all tracks but OTRO DIA MAS, so there's more here than simply a talented vocalist.

BONUS remix tracks of VOLAR SIN ALAS? Well, they are what they are! NEW and DIFFERENT vocal tracks on the Cumbia Nortena and Salsa versions. Recycled vocals with the "pitch" set up 3% or so from the album track remixed over alternate music beds for the Reggaeton & Dance mixes. It's an old trick we used to use in radio, pitch the turntable +3% and pick up the tempo of dead slow songs without quite crossing over into "chipmunk" territory! Again, the remixes are what they are. Interesting, but entirely unrelated to the rest of the album!

No lyrics, so those of us who don't hear Spanish as well as we can read it will just have to strain our ears and practice our listening technique!

ALL IN ALL (not including the BONUS remix tracks), an odd mix that somehow manages to work very well together! Having only heard the title track before I bought this CD, I had NO idea what I'd be getting musically. After giving it several listens, I'd have to say I'm rather pleasantly surprised! It's an album you can put on and enjoy from start to finish--at least until the remixes kick in! Worth the admission price!
