Todo Seru es genial.......2003-04-07

Con ciertas bandas y artistas resulta extremadamente difícil recomendar uno u otro trabajo. Serú Girán, la tercera banda que tuvo el genio musical Argentino Charly García (teclado, voz y otros) junto al maestro Pedro Aznar (bajo, voz y otros), David Lebón (guitarra y voces) y Oscar Moro (batería), es uno de esos casos. "Grasa de las capitales" contiene el tema que le da nombre al álbum, que posiblemente sea capaz de resumir la quintaesencia de la banda como ningún otro, pero es un crimen musical dejar por fuera, como secundarios, excelentes trabajos como el primer álbum de la banda ("Serú Girán"), "Bicicleta" o "Peperina". Sin duda alguna, recomiendo cualquier trabajo de la banda, sin temor a equivocarme. Se trata de uno de esos raros ensambles que reúne a varios genios, y cuyo resultado no puede ser otro sino una serie de increibles álbumes de muy buena música.

Tengo que decir que este es uno de los mejores trabajos del "Dios del Rock Argentino" Charly García. Serú Girán fue uno de sus más importantes proyectos, uno con exelentes músicos, que trascendió fenomenalmente en el mundo del Rock. Todos los temas son espectaculares encabezados en su mayoría por la bella voz de David Lebón.

Great album, one of the best in latin rock..........2002-04-05

I suppose this album fits under a number of genres such as rock,
prog-rock, fusion or pop-fusion but no matter where you put it
it will shine as a really great album, perhaps the only album to
really live up to Seru Giran's towering reputation as "The
Argentine Beatles".

What makes this CD so good? The songwriting is amazing, all the
tunes are put together flawlessly, great chord changes and some
very introspective lyrics. The playing is top notch, featuring
Pedro Aznar's gorgeous fretless bass, Charly Garcia's rocking
synthesizer and piano lines, Oscar Moro's amazing sense of time
and feel and David Lebon's great guitar playing on most every
track. You get the sensation the band is "on" all the time
without ever getting the impression they're just noodling around.

Stand-out tracks (for me of course) are "La Grasa..." with it's
somewhat Zappa-esque sense of humor and fast-paced playing,
"Perro Andaluz", a great bittersweet lovesong, "Noche De Perros"
with Pedro's almost liquid sense of phrasing adorning every bar
with beautiful fretless melodies and of course, the argentinian
rock standard "Viernes 3 A.M.", a tearjerker which will probably
take a while to leave your mind.

Perhaps the only track I don't like is "Los Sobrevivientes", but
listening to the album all the way through you barely even feel
the song. I suppose Charly's high-pitched voice and the language
barrier might stop some people from enjoying this CD as much as
I do, but anyone with an appreciation for great playing (bassists
especially) and good songwriting will probably get a lot out of
this argentinian classic. Essential.

Personally this is Seru Giran's album that I enjoy the most. The sound and the composition are mature and the talent of band members is displayed in its entire expression. A few little words for "Cuanto tiempo más llevará" the most beautiful song from David Lebon I ever listened.
A must for latin american rock fans, you won`t regret it!

This album came out in 1992 (hence the name seru '92) just in time for their "reunion" tour... I bought this album in Buenos Aires for 22 peos, at a time when the peso was tied to the US dollar. Ouch! If you need a comparison, think Elton John 1973 ("Goodbye Yellow Brick Road") vs Elton John 2004 (all filler, all crap). If you wondered why these guys even bothered, at least Garcia, when sober and not doped clearly stated for the press and for the record [no pun intended] that they only did it for the money. And it shows! Argentine audiences are such big suckers for anything nostalgic of the "good old days" that they even bought the sleep-inducing, phoned in live performances forever stamped on polycarbonate "Seru Giran en Vivo, volumes 1 & 2" Yes, stupid as I am, i also bought those. it took me a long while to get rid of them all on eBay as a "lot". Good riddance! And if you pay the $74- listed on this item, you deserve to be born and bred in Argentina in your next lifetime. That oughta fix ya!

Not the best Seru Giran live, but far from bad..........2006-02-06

If you compare this live recordindg against the one the band released earlier in its career (1982), prior to Charly Garcia going solo, or against similar recordings by Sui Generis (the first band Garcia formed back in the seventies), there is hardly going to be a doubt: this album will loose. Garcia's singing was far from the same level we all loved and hoped for, and the lyrical value of the new songs (featured on their 1992 album) was not comparable with their eighties work. However, the album serves a dual purpose: obviously it promoted the band's most recent work, which they performed on a tour all through Argentina, following the release of "Seru '92". But, it also contained some of their classics, which it is very interesting to hear with a few years of separation between their original released.

"En Vivo" provides you with an opportunity to witness the evolution in the way Pedro Aznar, David Levon, Oscar Moro and Charly Garcia approach their original compositions. Granted that the end result is not the best they've put on record, it remains as a testimony of the band's history and endurance in spite of Charly's ups and downs as a singer and a leader.

Whereas some albums could benefit from a properly done remastering, some are simply bad and no amount of studio whizery could save it from the trash bin.
Here's a prime example: The songs are for the most part, good. However there are a couple of elements that work against any possible greatness that this CD might have possibly achieved: A lackluster performance by all memebrs of the band, including, but not limited to: Garcia forgetting the words to his own songs (I am shocked, shocked!), David Lebon allowed to perform some of his inferior compositions (Note: David tries REALLY HARD to rally the fans to sing his awful anthems. I wonder if the concertgoers - those not stoned anyway - waved their cigarrete lighters as David crooned them to puke), bad recording and mixing technicques, and the feeling that their hearts are not really into it, as they literally plod through some of their best known songs from their catalog. Clearly they only did this for the money. The Rolling Stones can get away with it because at least they hire the best backup singers, musicians, technicians and engineers they can find. While either this band or Columbia/Sony wanted to save some pesos and just record the whole thing as cheaply as possible.
This was a "reunion" type of concert. I truly expected more from these guys. The booklet is crap.
I'd recommend their 1982 "live" CD "No Llores por Mi Argentina", but I'd be doing you another disservice. That CD has gone through so many studio facelifts, you can't consider it a live album anymore. Fortunately you can find "Yo No Quiero Volverme Tan Loco" on CD nowadays. That one I wholeheartedly recommend. Seru Giran at its best, with no studio tinkering.
As for this one, skip it. You ain't missing nothin' anyways.
