2 out of 5 stars The Sound But Not The Soul.......2001-06-04

I am a hard-core tango fan but have to say I find very little to like about this CD. I bought it on the strength of the line-up of musicians in El Quinteto Buenos Aires who are joined by the Royal Philatelic Orchestra conducted but the illustrious Ettore Stratta. With accomplished tango artists like Antonio Agri, Leopoldo Federico, Pablo Ziegler, Osvaldo Berlingieri and Hector Console at the nucleus, how could I go wrong? After all, Ziegler's Tango Romance with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra was a winner! Sadly, this isn't. The tango presented here is of the type one would expect to hear in an elevator. There is almost no passion and play is lackluster on nearly all cuts. The one exception is a fine rendition of the Ziegler composition Milonga En El Viento. They destroyed Cafetin de Buenos Aires! While this CD would be fine as background music in a corporate office, I can't see myself listening very often. Symphonic Tango may have the sound of tango, but it lacks the soul of tango.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet & Warm..........1999-03-13

I love all the "Symphonic" series by Mr. Stratta who is ingenious in arranging music. I heard his music by some chance at a CD shop for the first time. The melody was so sweet and I asked a shopboy what the song was. The CD was "Symphonic Bolero" with nice cover art. Since then I've been a big fan of him. This CD is also one of my favorite. This always lets me be in a warm and happy mood. I'd like to recommend you to try his other albums. Good buy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tango Compilation.......1999-01-08

Will attract both hard-core tango fans and newcomers. It includes both classic pieces as well as a couple of Piazolla's best.

5 out of 5 stars This is stunning--dance-able, listen-able tango music........1998-09-29

There is a nice mix of old and new "standards." The accompanying booklet has a brief, but authoritative history of the tango and the composers and performers on the cd. It really makes you want to dance but listening is OK too. Energizing and inspirational in its lushness.

5 out of 5 stars Tango at its best.......2001-01-26

Sexteto Mayor has moved the old tango to today's music values, without loosing the essence of the tango, the 2x4 rythm. It combines then two things, highly professionally executed music with the virtues of the Argentine tango. A perfect combination. Even if you are not a tango fan, you should not miss this one. This CDs reflects a performance that has today over 500 presentations around the globe, from China to Albulquerque, from Turkey to San Diego, and has performed in the best theatres and music center around the world. Do not miss it.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed emotions.......2000-07-20

I admit it, when it comes to tango, I tend to be a purist. Therefore, I still have a hard time accepting many of the latest "fusion" trends such as certain songs found in this CD which are not real tangos [e.g. "Ojos negros" a traditional Russian song, played in a tango tune] as well as the "bilingual" versions of some traditional tangos (sung with a pathetic accent, reminiscent of the early days of Julio Iglesias, I might add!)] The orchestra however, sounds wonderful, exceptionally balanced and very assertive.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive collection. A MUST have........1999-10-31

Sexteto Mayor has been known for years in Argentina as being some of the best in tango interpreting and playing. This production meets all expections. This is Argentinian Tango at its best. Great examples were chosen for this CD, I buy it often to give to friends that want to know about my Argentinian origins.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......1999-06-04

Sexteto Mayor is a MUST HAVE in every tango lover's collection. This is authentic Argentinian tango at its best!

5 out of 5 stars HIDDEN JEWELS.......2006-04-22

Gianluigi Trovesi (clarinets) & Gianni Coscia (accordion), Round About Weill (5*)
Gianluigi Trovesi (clarinets) & Gianni Coscia (accordion), In Cerca di Cibo (5*)

Gianluigi Trovesi is a hidden jewel in today's jazz. Perhaps he's undersung because he's Italian: he performs and records in Italy, not in American jazz clubs or for a central American jazz label. Maybe, on these two albums, it's because some afficionados look down on the "European" clean jazz typical to ECM records. Above all, I suspect it's because the music he plays --though not the way he plays it-- is hard to classify.

Take these two albums. Are they jazz? Italian folk music? Composed or 'classical' music? Trovesi and Coscia mesh as well as any duo in jazz --think of the exquisite music made by duos such as Charlie Haden and Kenny Baron, Jim Hall and Ron Carter, or Gary Burton and Chick Corea on Crystal Silence. But the music Torvesi and Coscia produce on these two albums is devilishly difficult to classify. Sometimes they settle for composed lines, heartbreaking melodies played simply, simply. At other times, they clearly improvise, but seldom on recognmizable jazz lines. They are demons --Trovesi especially-- at quoting wildly from other pieces: they close one piece on the Weill album with "Blue Moon," another time with (almost) "Frere Jacques." But it's jazz nonetheless, played by two hyper-alert and super-intelligent musicians who mine their musical ancestry to consummate effect.

Of the two albums, my wife has a very slight preference for the Weill album, which is made up half of tunes written by Weill and most of the rest of the artists' own tunes that fit the mood of Weill. Both clarinet and acordion capture well the cabaret atmosphere of so many Weill tunes, including different versions of "Alabama Song" and "Tango Ballade."

On the Weill album, Trovesi continues his fascination with John Lewis's "Django," the moving funeral dirge for French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt first recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet. (Trovesi plays "Django" on In Cerca di Cibo and quotes it on Around Small Fairy Tales.) This is appropriate because in some respects, Trovesi is like Lewis, though much hotter and more earthy at times. Both composed and have led groups that played music that critics saw as too 'classical.' Both used non-jazz idioms for jazz purposes.

I own five albums by Trovesi now, which is all I've been able to find and buy to date. Around Small Fairy Tales features Trovesi playing his own compositions with a string orchestra. From G to G and Fugace feature his octet, which sounds at times like a slightly woozy stepchild of the great George Russell experimental groups of the very early sixties. In an age that slights the clarinet as a solo instrument, Trovesi is arguably the best clarinetist in jazz, a major soloist and melodist.

I love this man and he's never sounded better than playing with Coscia. Needless to say, these two ECM albums are impeccably engineered for sound.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative and dreamlike.......2005-10-24

The two reed instruments complement each other wonderfully in the tonal range of the human voice. They are smoothly blended even in stacatto pieces. Coscia reminds me of Dino Saluzzi, not as expressive, yet more rhythmically emphatic than Saluzzi and with much more variation in style. Trovesi's clarinet has a beautiful, liquid sound. The music varies from oom-pah folk to hypnotic wandering, all of it inventive. There are no cliches here. Reviewed well in Downbeat, but is it jazz? There is a classical foundation, but the rhythms, harmonies and melodies are all over the map. Even so, there is a certain sameness that sets in after a while, due to the limited pallette.

5 out of 5 stars This is amazing.......2005-07-02

First, this CD is impressible-only two instruments but the music they play is incredible. The music in this CD-slow and fast-emotional.Amazing.And again...highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars magical music.......2005-05-03

Like this duo's ECM release "In cerca di cibo", this disc has a wonderful old world feel. The combination of trovesi's clarinets and Coscia's accordian suite Weil's compostions well. Beatuiful playing and recording quality. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for Tango Dancers.......2006-01-12

Tango DJ's are always on the hunt for solidly rhythmic tango
music that pulls people on to the dance floor, and Canaro is
one of the best orchestras for dancing tango, with a solid
easy-to-hear walking beat you have to be a real oaf to miss.

This CD doesn't disappoint in the dancing department, containing
mostly vocals featuring Roberto Maida or Ernesto Fama, Canaro's
best singers from the period when he was most relevant to tango
dancers. 3 instrumentals fill out the generous allotment of 26
tracks. Sonic quality (amount of pops, crackle, hiss or noise
reduction artifacts) is about as good as you can expect for 30's
tango, which is to say "pretty freakin' good."

Pay no attention to the previous 2-star review, that person most
likely does not dance tango. This CD is a bargain, and I would
recommend it as a first Canaro purchase, and also as part of a
more extensive collection that a Tango DJ needs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tango Music.......2005-08-25

This is a collection of the most beautiful tango music I have ever heard. The captivating artistry of Francisco Canaro will transport you to a forgotten world of grace, beauty and romance. Each and every dance is a unique work of art, beautifully composed, arranged and exquisitely played. What I find so appealing is the music's blend of powerful emotion with magical gifted orchestrations. The sound quality is superb and each gem sparkles with clarity.
As a collector, I often am disappointed with modern tango interpretations, which seem to lack warmth and rhythm. But thankfully, we have Francisco Canaro and his Orquesta Tipica, whose music has it all. During his 30 year career, Mr. Canaro was highly respected and loved by audiences around the world. His truly transforming music will lift your spirit and is an absolute must for everyone of any age!

2 out of 5 stars Your Grandmothers Tango.......2005-08-10

This album is good for what it is- and as the previous review states the sound is awesome for recordings from 1930-40's. I was looking for something a little more soulful. If you want 1930's -40's sounding tango.. then this CD will suit you just fine. Not the best tango out there.

    5 out of 5 stars Enchantment.......2005-03-15

This is a magical album. There is a quality in Francisco Canaro's music that I can only describe as magical. It is in a class all its own among Tango music. The sound on this particular production is excellent for the 1930s-1940s recordings. It sounds beautiful. The music brings every emotion through the tasteful and unexpected turns of the texture, melody, rhythm, and orchestration. The songs are just damn good. There is incredible subtlety and poetry in Canaro's direction of his orchestra. While other Tango orchestras need to be mixed with each other in a playlist to avoid an overdose of one style, this single CD is so rich that it can hold its own through an entire hour of practica without becoming repetitive, the dancers just going on and on. While driving in a car, a piece of music came to my mind, and I just thought, "That is enchantment --- what is that music? Why, it's my Canaro Tango CD!" I hope this production team will issue a Volume 2.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2007-01-04

Carlos Gardel was the most acclaimed tango singer during the first quarter of 20th century. His voice was so musical, expressive and charming that every recording he made of tango music is considered definitve even nowadays.

This compilation brings some not-so-well-known tangos brought to real life by the master process of nimbus records, this company had performed excellent restorations of early opera singers such as caruso and amelita galli curci among others.

A must for anyone with interest in tango music and especially for gardel aficionados who will find more detailed ambience and subleties from gardel guitarrists. A real jewel.

      4 out of 5 stars Tango's for gringos.......2003-04-20

If you like Argentine style tango you won't like this cd, but if you are like me and like tango played romanticly, and with lush stringed arraingements, instead of the harsh icy sound of the argentine way, then you will love this recording, I only wish that the original albums from which this cd was compiled were available in their entirety.

1 out of 5 stars Big disappointment for Tango fans.......2001-04-24

I purchased this CD with great expectations which were completely dashed. I have always wished that Placido Domingo would record a CD of Argentine tango, since he has the voice and sense of drama to do justice to the art of tango. So when I saw this CD, I thought, "Wow!"

However, this CD is a crime commited against tango. The arrangements are not traditional Argentine tango, but the most saccharine gringo tango. I wish that Domingo had recorded with a real tango orchestra like Color Tango or the orchestra from Forever Tango.

Furthermore, this CD recycles music from the soundtrack to the Carlos Saura movie Tango. You might as well get that CD instead of this one for the few tracks worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Consumate Candian Brass.......2000-08-12

This is another great Canadian Brass retrospective. It is a varied and very listenable cross section of their recordings as of 1988. The selections extend from Bach to ragtime and Gershwin, and just about everything in between. Many of the selections are not usual brass fare, but are given the special, superb Canadian Brass treatment.

      5 out of 5 stars absolutely great.......2000-08-05

this is a great cd, theres no two ways about it. i got this as a gift from my mother(both of us being trumpet players, we love brass stuff) and wore out my first copy. the range of music is wonderful, from classical to jazz and even gershwin, it has it all. a great cd to read by. it inspired me to buy the sheet music( its as much fun to play as to listen to). a fantastic addition to any music cllection.
