By Far One of The Best Salsa CD's Out There.......2005-09-30

If you are like me, a picky salsa aficionada, then you usually buy a CD that will get you off the couch and into the dancefloor the moment you hear it. Sonora Poncena sizzles in this CD. Buy it and dance all night long...every song in this CD is HOT!

La Sonora Ponceña Continues to Sizzle in the 21st Century.......2001-01-06

Oh my lord thank-you once again for giving us music to enjoy and dance. Papo and Quique Lucca along with La Sonora Ponceña has smashed Salsa scene once again in the format of Salsa Gorda and Clave with this astonishing production. Hands-down this is the best of 2000 and beyond. Competitors standby...La Ponceña...is taking center stage now. After Tito Puente's Birdland Live recording...now La Ponceña is on the spanking side of Salsa. It's really a shame that they are not in with the click in the Miami Mafia of Latin music. If you want to hear good Cuban music well step-back and think about it for a minute because La Sonora Ponceña 45th Anniversary Live is way much better in all respects. I love real cuban music but La Sonora Ponceña from Ponce Puerto Rico RULES. There's just no doubt about it. I don't say these things unless I truly mean it.

Superb cd of February, 2000 concert!.......2000-12-12

This musical giant is celebrating its 45th anniversary and this cd includes almost all of the songs performed last February at San Juan, P.R. with most of its former lead singers( Luigi Texidor, Yolanda Rivera, etc.) plus special guest stars, salsa legends Andy Montanez, Cano Estremera and Ismael Miranda Only missing is Tito Gomez who sang that day but his record company did not grant approval for the inclusion of his tracks in this cd. For lovers of "Salsa Gorda" by the best musicians from Puerto Rico.

An undisputed classic of Puerto Rican Salsa........2007-03-24

This 1978 release was Sonora Poncena's all-time best album--and one that no real salsero should be without. By itself, the immortal "Se Formo" more than justifies buying this CD but the all-time classics "Moreno Soy" and "Canto Al Amor" are also stone-cold Poncena masterpieces. Best of all perhaps is this digitally remastered CD's superb sound quality (which is considerably better and cleaner than the original's). Buy this CD...pump it up in your stereo...your speakers will definitely get a workout...and enjoy it!!!

CHECK BEFORE ORDERING.......2007-03-21

WARNING: Before I write my review of the album, you should be aware of a serious problem with the CD itself, Night Raider, which I own a copy of the original from over 20 years ago. The problem is with the remastered CD. I got my copy today of the remastered CD and the wrong album was burned on it! The album burned on it is also from La Sonora Poncena, but it is ON TARGET.

I just notified Amazon about this. It is worth checking out before buying because once you get the correct album, it is one of the BEST from this group!!! I give this album 5 stars.

My favorite track is ALGO FACIL/SOMETHING EASY, a great salsa track with a hint of latin jazz. Listen to how the trumpets and piano both play off each other. I am glad they left vocals off this track because it would have been a distraction. It's a fun, upbeat song with great breaks and instrumentation.

Other great tracks are RAMONA and Umi-Laye.

This is a must-have album for Sonora Poncena fans, but make sure they have corrected the problem I mentioned above!

Sonora, "Direct and Plugged in Deep".......2007-03-23

Folks! Most of their albums are very impressive and there are dozens of them, but few would deny this one's importance. From the opening number the cd steamrolls it's way thru 8 magical songs of top quality. "Yambeque" the big hit of the album opens the set and gets you into a dancing mood right off. "Soledad" is another salsa number in the Puerto Rico tradition. The band slows it down just a touch with the bolero, "Creo en Ti" and then cranks up the voltage for the rest of the way with the other hit of this key salsa recording. "Herrida Cerrada en Falso", may be the weakest tune of the bunch but then again every tune in here is a smoker so it's in good company. "Date Cuenta", another hit for the band keeps it hot and spicy before the album takes on yet another turn. The band turns the heat up even more with some latin jazz. "Si La Ven" is irresistable and cooks the music to just under boiling but the real centerpiece of this entire album is, "Joldo". A masters work of top flight latin jazz arranging and playing. Hot from the first note to the last, it's worth the price of the cd on it's own. The closer is "Aunque te Quiero", a guaguanco tastefully done by Papo Lucca and the band. This recording had it going on and still does. Authentic Puerto Rican flavor. If you like your beans tasty, your meat with flavor dripping all over it and your dessert fresh and delicious.....then you just have to get this. Sonora Ponceña, salsa pura y taaaan sabrosa.

"Huracan", "Borinquen" and the timeless "Mi Lindo Yambu" were the tracks which made this 1980 release so popular and such a majestic work. Papo Lucca and company were still on top of their game and this album deservedly remains an essential Salsa masterpiece. Don't miss out--get it now!!!
