Fantastic!.......2007-01-09
As a movie soundtrack fan, I was immediately drawn to 'The Greatest Game Ever Played,' and when I got it just a few weeks ago, I wasn't dissapointed.
At first it sounds much like James Horner's 'Legends of the Fall,' but it is by no means a repeat of it. It is a beautifull soundtrack on it's own, with many different themes that keep it exciting. The music has the same early 1900's feel as the movie while stil maintaining a variety of music styles; from soaring strings to intense violin pieces to period vocals like "And the Band Played On." Like the movie, it has a very inspirational feel, and I would definately recommend it to anyone, whether fans of the movie or soundtrack lovers.
Loved the movie, love the score.......2006-03-17
I saw The Greatest Game Ever Played in the theater and became enchanted with this film, based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, a low-class amateur golfer who emerges from complete obscurity to win the U.S. Open. By the end of the movie, I realized how much I was enjoying the music and decided that I just had to buy the soundtrack.
As I have listened to this soundtrack again and again, I've been captivated by this music. The beauty and power of Brian Tyler's composition is most impressive. As an intent listener, I've been deeply moved by the expansive musical landscape that is covered in this soundtrack. The central motif, a majestic and magnanimous melody which forms the essence of the main title, is woven into tracks throughout the disc, tying everything together as part of a musical (and theatrical) storyline. Indeed, it seems like an incomplete experience if I don't listen to the entire soundtrack, start to finish, in sequential order. If you take the time to do that, you'll find it's a very rewarding listen.
4.5 Stars for The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2006-03-11
This was an excellent 10 dollar purchase from iTunes, to put it mildly. As much as I loved Tyler's The Final Cut, Darkness Falls, Timeline and Constantine scores, this tops them all. It's a loving tribute to the main character of the film and good ol' fashioned film scoring in general. I haven't seen the movie and therefore cannot comment on wether or not it works in the context of the film. I can, however, say with great pleasure what a joy it is to listen to as a solo album.
The album picks up with the main title track, and what a great track it is. Some people will say it is Horner reminiscent, and while many themes on this CD do remind me of James Horner's best work, I actually think the closer resemblance is John Debney. I'm serious - this score is in many ways similar to The Passion of the Christ. It has pounding drums and wonderful percussion and isn't afraid to go all out with the string and brass section. It's a thrilling, heroic, melodramatic and operatic score that I've enjoyed listening to repeatedly. A highly recommended score for anyone who enjoys breathtaking and moving and powerful and heroic sometimes lighthearted and always thrilling music.
cheers

One of Brian Tyler's best.......2005-10-01
Brain Tyler says of this score that "the orchestral music was influenced by the popular music of the end of the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century - Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss, and Mahler. To me, the sound we know as 'American' was a combination of the styles of so many of these great European composers." As far as I'm concerned, this score was a lot more influenced by James Horner -- certain bits sound strikingly similar to Legends of the Fall. But don't let that put you off, because the rest of the bits don't. This score is beautiful, lively, energetic, exciting and ebullient Americana throughout -- an odd contrast to Tyler's last score, the dark beast that was Constantine. Despite the occasional "nods" to Horner, though, Greatest Game Ever Played is one of Tyler's best and most thoroughly enjoyable scores, well orchestrated and well recorded also. If it's not quite Children of Dune, it's certainly better than his best since, such as Timeline and The Final Cut, on par with his other score for Bill Paxton, Frailty, though obviously in a very different genre and with a very different sound. So if you're a fan of Brian Tyler or good, uplifting, exciting film music in general, definitely check out this score.

Frontman Dan Marsala has gone on record saying that Story of the Year's near-platinum 2003 debut, Page Avenue--produced by Goldfinger's John Feldmann--didn't properly represent the band or its full throttle live show. The St. Louis screamo group aims to remedy that with this follow-up, co-produced by Steve Evetts, whose past clients include the convincingly heavy Hatebreed and Dillinger Escape Plan. To the casual fan, the difference might sound negligible. The guitars are a little louder and there's more of a chugga-chugga thing going on, but the lyrics still wrestle with oppression and much of the pop sheen of the first album still shines through on tracks like "Take Me Back" and "We Don't Care Anymore." --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
After a near-platinum debut album and near-constant touring (517 shows, 540 days, 1.5 million fans), Story of the Year returns with the band's studio follow-up to Page Avenue. Heavier and more guitar-driven than Page Avenue, In the Wake of Determination, co-produced by Steve Evetts (Hatebreed, Cure, Saves the Day), delivers headline-grabbing energy and edge that is 2005's Story of the Year.

Average.......2007-02-28
This band is average. Most bands today are average. Nothing that different. Not to say this is a bad album, because it's not. But it's not ground breaking.
A near miss.......2006-10-09
For fans of the band's immense Page Avenue, this album essentially walks the correct path. The songwriting is much of the same: gentle waves of sorrow and longing to be crashed upon by Marsala's impressive raptor-like wail.
The tracks slope up and down between soft interludes and blazing heavy bangers, so within the confines of what's already a stereotypically defined genre of Pop-Rock-meets-Post-Hardcore there is enough variety in this album to satisfy most people.
Personally, my problem with this release is the sequence of tracks. I didn't feel pulled along by the course the album takes, or rather there doesn't really seem to be any course. It opens, predictably, with the first single - and one of the band's most formulaic and uninspired tracks - We Don't Care Anymore, and from there proceeds to bang along with one vaguely themed thrasher after another. The first album wasn't the most introspective of rock albums, but the lyrics seemed more emotionally charged and there was an honesty that isn't present on songs like "Stereo" and "Our Time is Now."
There are a few major strengths on the album, in some subtle but very elegant chords on the smooth hummer, "Sleep," and the climactic finale, " 'Is This My Fate,' He Asked Them."
Again, for fans of the band, the album's a solid buy with a few essential additions to your musical collection, but as a piece it falls short of the premature expectations set by Page Avenue.

Awesome.......2006-07-29
I've seen SOTY live before and they were so awesome and they are really nice guys in person. This cd is so good it's one of those that are hard to leave your stereo because you can't stop listening to it.
They went from suckin' to rockin'........2006-07-16
Seriously folks. The first album was really quite horrible, and I'm glad I got into these guys with this one. If I had gotten into them with Page Avenue, I would have dismissed them as screamo garbage and I probably wouldn't have given them a fair second chance. Anyway, this is some great stuff! I really like the songs 'Take Me Back', 'Meathead', 'Our Time Is Now', 'Is This My Fate? He Asked Them', 'Sleep' and 'Five Against The World'. 'Meathead' and 'Our Time Is Now' are two very good punk rock songs, that the moshers'll probably love. 'Take Me Back' is just a great rock song, same with 'Sleep' and 'Five Against The World'. 'Is This My Fate? He Asked Them.' sounds metalish, and of course the metalheads'll dig it.
Overall, this is a major improvement over their last album, which pretty much sucks. Definately buy this...and not Page Avenue!

The lines between Trinity (born Wade Brammer), Dillinger, Yabby You, and myriad other reggae figures began to blur with the rise of DJs and talk-over artists. Here's Trinity, at 22, riffing so that he'd not be forgotten. His voice sounds startlingly like Dillinger's, especially when he's talking gravelly and with exclamations, jumping around the reverb-soaked instrumental track in a way that's simultaneously meaningful as narrative and as rhythm. There are obvious shadings provided by U-Roy and Big Youth, but even as an early twentysomething, Trinity could go from a near-shout talk-over to a sweet R&B-tinged vocal warble--sometimes over a threadbare bass and drums track--and make it all sound coherent and compelling. The first eight tracks of Shanty Town Determination originate in the vinyl release, circa 1977, which was exhausted after a small 1,000-copy run. With this CD reissue, there are five additional tracks, including Trinity's Big Youth homage, "Z 90"; a remix of the Prophets' "How Long Jah"; a second-generation takeoff of the Heptones' "Fight It to the Top"; and "Blessed Are the Meek," a tip to Slim Smith. --Andrew Bartlett

Trinity a true dread inna Babylon........2003-06-24
Great riddims drive this collection of Trinity's finest work. Trinity's a personal favorite because his i-tinual love of Jah comes through in his chants, passionate and moving at times. "Hold Them Jah Jah" and Blessed are the Meek" are standouts on yet another gem from Blood & Fire. Trinity apparently still tours with the Blood & Fire sound system. However, instead of jumping on a plane to Europe to catch a show, simply turn up "Shanty Town Determination" and rock an' swing. Who knows it feels it.

Album Description
Despite the fact that the purity of early 90's hip-hop has been forever lost and the current "all about the money" trend is not about to disappear any time soon, the new school of Canadian hip hop is on the rise. In a country where most artists remain independent, DL Incognito's been able to master his craft, marvelously in the underground. It's been eight years since DL Incognito wrote his first verse, but his passion for music remains the same. His distinctive voice and metaphorically driven rhymes are both witty and powerful. With a plethora of musical influences ranging from Common to Jay-Z, DL's sound is refreshing for any real hip-hop fan. With opening credit for The Roots, Boot Camp, Choclair and many others on his resume, the founder of Nine Planets Hip Hop® is ready to take his music worldwide. With his debut album "A Sample And A Drum Machine", DL Incognito has more then the necessary weapons required to win the battle against the mind-numbing hip hop that plagues our airways. DL creates quality hip-hop music... Period.

Customer Reviews:
Better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks.......2007-01-24
First of all, people seem to be overly critical of the choir. They say that it sounds out of tune or whatever, but this is only because they were recorded live. In Advent: One-Winged Angel, the same choir sounds totally incredible. The choir itself isn't bad, it's the recording environment that was not so hot.
That said, I can say that this is a very impressive two CD set, even though several of the songs I don't recognize. The music is professionally composed and arranged, and just goes to show that Final Fantasy music is proffesional level. The only cons are the lesser sound quality of being recorded live and the MC tracks, which can get to be a bit long. The way they keep talking makes me really want to know what they're saying. My favorite pieces are:
1. One-Winged Angel: I do admit that the FFVII Reunion Tracks arrangement is better, but only because of the recording environment. This arrangement has a lot of cool new elements and an awesome sound. The only problems I see with this arrangement is the absent-minded microphone placement and a bit of background shuffling that is heard at one part. The shuffling is very quiet and you get used to it, but I'm just picky about these things. As for the microphone placement; whoever put one right next to the #%@$in' snare drum deproved the quality of the piece a bit much. The snare drum during the chorus is louder than any of the other parts, and the choir is already being a bit overpowered by the orchestra. This makes for a choral section that isn't heard well enough. Despite all these slight cons, however, this arrangement of the classic piece remains superb and awesome-sounding.
2. Liberi Fatali: Same choir rant as before. This arrangement doesn't sound quite as good as the original, but it's not really that different, it's still an incredible piece.
3. Melodies of Life: This arrangement is better, I think, than the original except for the singing. She sounded a lot more confident in the original. But aside from that, this song is a great classic.
4. Suteki Da Ne: The original was quite a bit better, both in sound quality and in the singing. Rikki was nervous during the performance, it is shown by her incessant breath-taking in the middle of phrases and low confidence in her voice. However, the instrumentation does sound nicely different in some spots, and Rikki's singing is still beautiful.
This album is a must-have for any FF freak, and is better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks. Don't miss it.
I love this CD........2004-02-23
Firstly, Mr. Gibbs -- why would anybody buy this if they haven't played Final Fantasy games?
Secondly, this is an amazing CD. With the exception of One-Winged Angel, every track on this CD is (in my opinion) the best orchestral version of these songs ever done. And this is coming from somebody who owns Celtic Moon, Grand Finale, Fithos Lusec, and a smattering of Orchestral Game Concert CDs.
Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It really is excellent.
For those who wanna get their FF orchestra groove on..........2004-02-20
Final Fantasy 20020220 is worth buying. It is a great CD to listen to if you want to hear orchestrated versions performed live, mistakes and all. That said, let me point out everything that is wrong with the performances, and why I did not give 20020220 a 5/5. As partial as I am to Final Fantasy music, I must criticize the singing in this performance. In both tracks that featured a choir (Liberi Fatali and One Winged Angel) it seemed like everyone was trying to outsing each other, the tenors in particular would sing awfully loud, while everyone else was drowned out. The soloists RIKKI and Emiko Shiratori did a fabulous job, in my opinon. Others said that they sounded nervous, I do not agree. The actual performance by the orchestra was brilliant. I especially liked Liberi Fatali, One Winged Angel, and Vamo' Alla Flamenco. I wish I could speak Japanese, because 8 of the 25 tracks on the 2 disc set are nothing but the concert MCs talking about stuff. All in all I would like to restate that FF20020220 is worth buying, but maybe you should play some of the FF games to hear these songs before you listen to the orchestra version, all the more to appreciate this masterpiece.
The Fantasy Continues..........2003-06-10
Nobuo Uematsu truly holds true to the Final Fantasy music legacy he himself set down beginning with the Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite CDs. Although I do have a few complaints, my overall take on this album is extremely positive. I'd say my favourite renditions on this CD are "Vamo' Alla Flamenco", lush, rich arrangement for orchestra (which truly is the greatest symphonic rendering I've seen from almost any game composer [thanks to Shiro Hamaguchi]) and the brass-graced Final Fantasy VI's "Terra" / "Tina" (which almost lives up to the Grand Finale version). Basically, every single song on these two CDs were mind-blowing with the exceptions of the two most crucial ones, "Liberi Fatali" and "One-Winged Angel". Okay, fine... I've got to give credit where credit is due, Liberi Fatali isn't THAT bad. It falters near the end though, but the primary complaint isn't the symphonic elements (or even the annoying snare [?] drum... *grrr*), but rather the supposed choir they assigned. Not very harmonic or in-tune, but I still give it 4-stars.
To sum it all up, all very nice arrangements with those little differences which make it all the more enjoyable. Cons? The choir voices and the MC segments (I don't speak Japanese, so my apologies if you do and find them entertaining).
One of the Best (non OST) Final Fantasy works.......2003-02-19
There hasn't been a live CD since the ill-fated "Symphonic Suite" many years ago and now there is this - quite simply put a live version of some of the best Final Fantasy songs. The Tokyo Philharmonic is on every beat and adds alittle more to the Final Fantasy melodies. The MC's get annoying and their Japanese is very hard to understand. The choice of songs was superb yet there is no "live feel" as most of the songs are played just as you would have heard them on another Final Fantasy CD. All in all, this is one of the best and one can easily see by some of its few flaws to its real beauty - the epitome of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy work.

Customer Reviews:
A Fantastic Storyteller!.......2005-05-12
This CD has 4 execllent stoies on it.Elizabeth Falconer writes one graet story, Little Pink Fish, that I like really really much. Atabichi, the Hoppositional Frog, says all his sentences backwards. He is a silly hoppisite frog.
The rest of the stories are just great.I love all of them, just like I love the instruments too. They sound so beautiful. She plays the koto in three songs and she plays the sanshin on one. They sound interesting. Kintaro-the Strong Little Boy Who Sucked his Thumb is funny. She said to watch out for the Oni monster. Kintaro always sucked his thumb. Falconer is a great storyteller. Love,
Your best friend, Dishyra
4 Thumbs Up (my daughter's & mine) for Little Pink Fish!.......2005-04-20
Elizabeth Falconer has another winner with "Little Pink Fish." Her ability to combine fresh interpretations of traditional Japanese folk tales is truly exceptional. And, the music of the traditional Japanese koto in melodies and sound effects gives the child an education in music ethnocology without them even knowing it. In "Atabichi, the Hoppositional Frog," the lovely minor chords of Okinawan music provide a backdrop for the story that gives it authenticity and the unique flavor of Okinawan culture that is separate from the rest of Japan.
As a person of Japanese descent raised in America, I'm truly grateful that an artist like Ms. Falconer is available to families who want to maintain cultural ties with our heritage. For our children, they are certainly grateful that this is being done in a fun way! However, for those children of other cultures, "Little Pink Fish" still has a universal appeal that doesn't come off as "educational," it's just captivating and purely enjoyable story telling. It's recommended for ages 4 and up, but my 2-year old daughter was singing along with "Tomodachi Kintaro...." during her first listening experience the other night before bed. The next morning, she was asking for "Little Pink Fish" upon waking.
I highly recommend Ms. Falconer's Koto World CDs to parents and children alike. Besides the story telling CDs, the koto music ones are also wonderful for all ages. "Oyasumi" has become our standard new baby gift to friends who all say how much they love it!

A promising major label debut.......2006-07-01
God Forbid formed and released their first disc in 1998, then spent the following several years trying to make it big. Though they would have to wait six years for a breakthrough release, their first great album came a mere three years later. 2001's "Determination", which was God Forbid's first release on Century Media records, should have been this New Jersey-based quintet's breakthrough because every ingredient is here for a superb thrash/metalcore record: catchy songs, great riffs, walloping drums, and rough, emotional vocals.
The album begins with a mid-paced instrumental, "Dawn Of The Millennia," which boasts a strong, driving double bass attack and punchy guitars. The next two songs, "Nothing" and "Broken Promise", continue in that same vein, but with faster tempos. The latter track also has pounding power chords, catchy, thumping drums, and an explosive ending with almost thunderous riffs and blast beats. "Network" and "Wicked" both have churning, headbanging guitar hooks and the latter also features two little and somewhat wild solos. "God's Last Gift" is doubtlessly the record's finest song. It's a quite awesome instrumental with swift, pounding drums, slamming, buzzsaw riffs, and a ripping solo. And, lastly, "A Reflection Of The Past" is another instrumental, but this one is serene and somewhat pretty, with good, harmonic guitar melody.
God Forbid did finally get the recognition they deserved with 2004's "Gone Forever", but "Determination" definitely should have been their breakthrough album, because (with talented musicianship, exceptional songwriting, and mostly crisp production), it should be very easy for all metalheads to fall in love with. Recommended.
g o d forbid. ! METAL! what happened!?.......2006-03-09
For their first LP, God Forbid seems to hold back nothing and give out everything powerful they feel. If you're a fan of true thrash-metal or metalcore, this is for you. Granted, I've owned this cd for years and only just recently got really into it. But, even when I bought it and listened to it not so frequently, I knew something good was brewin'.
Track by Track review
( out of 5 stars)
1. Dawn Of The Millennia - 4 1/2 / 5
good strong intro that usually get me ready for what's to come
2. Nothing - 4 / 5
great intro track, in fact you may think this is amazing. But, wait what's to come.
3. Broken Promise - 3 1/2 / 5
Strong track, no doubt. But, one of the best on the cd? I think not.
4. Divide My Destiny - 4 / 5
Strong track. Brutal. Good solid riffage and blastbeats.
5. Network - 5 / 5
This is where the cd turns into insane metal and techincal groove hardcore. This song starts the transition for me.
6. Wicked - 5 / 5
Continues where Network left off (not literally) but musically as chaotic and metal as can be. Words can't describe my love for this song.
7. Determination Part 1 - 5/5
Strong hardcore-trash metal. Great song, great lyrics.
8. Determination Part 2 - 5/5
Continues the greatness, instrumental. Starts off slow, speeds up, and comes back down to slow.
9. Go Your Own Way - 5/5
Another favorite, there's no shortage on this cd. What can I say?
10. God's Last Gift - 5/5
Another instrumental. Great great stuff. I love it.
11. A Reflection Of The Past - 4/5
Instrumental. Bit slower, and gets us ready for the last track.
12. Dead Words On Deaf Ears - 3 1/2 /5
Back to heavy with vocals. Good steady metal riffs and blastbeats. I wouldn't say one of my highlights though.
After this cd, they went the way of becoming more melodic. I don't hate it. But, I surely love it anywhere as near as this.
This is, in my opinion, some of the best metal I've ever heard.
the best.......2005-11-11
This cd in my opinion is their most natural sounding and best. Im not saying I dont like the direction their heading in with constition of treason, but their starting to sound like any other metalcore band. they do still have a unique sound to them, but i really liked the style they used in determination. i also really enjoy the drum work. the song compilation is awesome, and the riffs are totally different. very easy to distinguish each song from one another, except the first two beginning tracks. all in all, their best and most creative.
had it for years. very heavy and hardcore! grunge metal!.......2005-08-11
this cd starts of with an amazing intro then cuts directly into the first track. the cd is very heavy with some intense screaming vocals mixed with some beautiful spoken word as well. the vocals offset each other perfectly. i hate punk bands that just scream like retards. this band screams ALOT but in that good way. its a very powerful kind of scream that sounds like hes about to vomit. i love heavy metal and im telling you these vocals are awesome. the guitars are great as well. a ton of grunge mixed in with the higher lead work. most nu metal bands dont use this type of lead work. the drum work is a ton of double bass stuff also with the classic drum-following-guitar mode in full gear. the cd takes a break near the end with a very nice instrumental. all in all i think this is a very good grunge metal cd.
Blows crappy modern metal to bits.......2005-01-28
Shadows fall and God forbid seem to be the only 2 american bands that actually can play.
nu metal is pretty much gone, leaving us with cheesy emo-hardcore crap bands.

Sonora, "Direct and Plugged in Deep".......2007-03-23
Folks! Most of their albums are very impressive and there are dozens of them, but few would deny this one's importance. From the opening number the cd steamrolls it's way thru 8 magical songs of top quality. "Yambeque" the big hit of the album opens the set and gets you into a dancing mood right off. "Soledad" is another salsa number in the Puerto Rico tradition. The band slows it down just a touch with the bolero, "Creo en Ti" and then cranks up the voltage for the rest of the way with the other hit of this key salsa recording. "Herrida Cerrada en Falso", may be the weakest tune of the bunch but then again every tune in here is a smoker so it's in good company. "Date Cuenta", another hit for the band keeps it hot and spicy before the album takes on yet another turn. The band turns the heat up even more with some latin jazz. "Si La Ven" is irresistable and cooks the music to just under boiling but the real centerpiece of this entire album is, "Joldo". A masters work of top flight latin jazz arranging and playing. Hot from the first note to the last, it's worth the price of the cd on it's own. The closer is "Aunque te Quiero", a guaguanco tastefully done by Papo Lucca and the band. This recording had it going on and still does. Authentic Puerto Rican flavor. If you like your beans tasty, your meat with flavor dripping all over it and your dessert fresh and delicious.....then you just have to get this. Sonora Ponceña, salsa pura y taaaan sabrosa.

Anything Shon touches turns golden.......2007-01-18
I have known Shon for the past 15 years (mostly as a fan and intermittently as a friend) and I have always known he would always be a beautiful, inspired musician. Admittedly, my heart will forever belong to his band Moonwash Symphony; but, I do love Golden Boy. Follow this man's work, he is amazing.
Great Band.......2006-03-18
I Used to live 3 houses up from the Drummer of this band when i was a little kid. Back then you knew this guy was going to be good. He played the Drums in his Garage nearly Night and Day, and everyone on the street knew when "Brian" was playing. Once about 4 or 5 years ago they came back to their home town of Diamond Bar, California, and played in a Small Pizza place called "Rudy's Pizza". I had seen them a few times in the past, but this Particular intimate setting was played for just a small group of Local Fans and Friends. As you can imagine, It was Awesome. These guys are little known, but Should be very well known. The CD is great, and if you ever get a chance to see them live, Do so. A little Side note, When i was a Little kid, The Drummer Brian Boss gave me his Entire Collection of "GI Joe", He was a very cool guy back then, and well deserved of his success.
pleasantly different .......2006-03-06
After a couple of listens this album really grew on me. Each song offers something different there's plenty of catches particularly in the singers voice which rises and falls and sounds vaguely like morrisey- highlights include wild was the night, blue swans of winter and babydoll but really each song is unique with a feelgood tone and is enjoyable to listen to. If you want loud electric guitars and drums you wont find it here the songs are gentle and understated but this is no criticism.
ESPN Commercial.......2004-02-14
For those who were curious, the song "Almost Perfect" by Goldenboy on this album is the song used in the ESPN commercial where the Ohio State guy and a Michigan girl are making out and it says "without sports, this wouldn't be disgusting."
3.5.......2004-02-02
I stumbled upon this disc a little more than a year ago while out in Portland, OR at a listening station and I never put it back on the shelf. Although little is made of this band outside of the well-known circles (and not to be confused with the electronica group of the same name) this release on b-girl records in 2002 was pleasing at the start of the opening track. Light indie pop with acoustics set right enough of the time to make it a soothing, relaxing listen most of the time. Some lyrics are too soft for the matured listener and although Neil Finn and Elliot Smith fans may not be tested with this work, neither will they be disappointed.
The instrumental "Sunlight Through The Fog" deserves countless spins.
