The fortunes of the Dave Matthews Band have been so tied to its legendary live performances that it's arguably led to some well-documented searches for direction in the studio. The success of Everyday was hard won, its originally rejected material eventually revived, reworked, and released a year later as Busted Stuff. But those creative struggles have paid double dividends here, arguably pushing Matthews and company to a compelling new plateau on stage. Recorded in Boulder, Colorado, on July, 11, 2001, fully half of this two and a half-hour show is culled from the results of those stormy sessions, including brooding versions of Busted's then-unreleased "Bartender" and "Digging a Ditch." But it's the wider, more challenging musical palette of Everyday that takes center stage, stretching from the lyrical, cinematic drama of "The Space Between" and "What You Are" to the smoky, blues-jazz tinged "Angel" and loping funk of "When the World Ends." That sense of adventure helps reinvigorate even Matthews staples like "Crash into Me" and "What Would You Say" with new musical dimensions and helps make this collection more than just the band's sixth live album. It sounds like the beginning of a promising new chapter. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Like It, Love It, Need It........2007-06-15

Solid date from the DMB covering a lot of their newer material (at the time). I enjoy this album very much and I am a fan of the "Everyday" album. The ladies backing Dave up on some of the songs add a really cool vibe that is different from any other live DMB effort that I know of. Look for them on "Angel," "Everyday" and a great version of "Stay (Wasting Time)." Other stand outs are "Crash Into Me," "Two Step" and "All Along The Watchtower" not just because their DMB staples, but because I think you'd be hard pressed to find better versions of these songs. I also think LeRoi(Saxophones) plays particularly well on this recording. A great addition to any DMB fans collection.

Hey it might not matter to most of you, but this bugged me and I thought I'd set the record straight. S. Grgas "thelittlecroat" wrote a review and in it he wrote -

""All Along the Watchtower" Another version of this Dylan classic? Yes, but this time it doesnt close the show. A little different placement in the setlist is nice and Dave hits a electric guitar solo in this version! Almost worth the price of admission alone"

As a guitarist and a Dave fan I thought I would point out that Dave didn't play an electric guitar solo, he was clearly on acoustic during this song and the keyboardist used a distorted electric guitar sound for his solo. So sorry if you couldn't care less, and you're welcome to those who found this helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great DMB CD.......2007-02-05

If you're into the DMB, then you can not go wrong with this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Matthews Live: Everyday.......2006-07-20

For any band, artist and group, there is a 50/50 chance that they may sound either good or bad when performing live. Some artists, like Madonna, sound terrible live, but great in the studio. Dave Matthews sounds awesome in either situation.

On a roll with a multitude of live CDs under his belt already, Dave decides that on this adventure most of the tracks will be taken from his somewhat recent CD, Everyday. Now depending on how much you actually like this CD will have a baring on what you will think of this Live version.

Having said all this, Dave also has is usual favorite songs sung on this Live cd as well to attend to his fan base audience. So you need not worry about that.

All in all I really enjoyed this Live CD. I thought only one track, I Did It, felt rather flat and Dave's voice almost sounded almost scary! But all the rest sounded great!

Anyways, give this CD a try, again only if you were a big "Everyday" fan. If not, you may want to pass on to the others Live Cds under the Dave Matthews collection.

5 out of 5 stars Not as good as Central Park, but worth the money.......2006-05-27

I have this as well as The Central Park Concert, and I must say, if you want a sampling of some of DMB's better-known songs and/or a more "greatest hits" type of album, get that CD. But if you already know most of their songs and want more, get this. Here is an overview of the tracks:

1-DON'T DRINK THE WATER- It's hard to say whether this is better than the Central Park version, but overall, a good song any way you play it. My main problem is that this still has a long, unnecessary intro-- oh well. 10/10
2-JTR- Poor little JTR, on Lillywhite but didn't make Busted Stuff. It's a good song, and great live, but doesn't fit on Busted Stuff. I can see why they didn't put it on that album. 9/10
3-WHEN THE WORLD ENDS- Great hip-hop style drumming and good lyrics. Great song. Again, not sure which version is best. 9/10
4-SO RIGHT- Dave plays electric on this one, which is different for him. Speaking of which, I love the guitar riff at the beginning. 10/10
5-BIG EYED FISH- [GASP!] Dave said the f-word!!! The big problem with Ctrl. Park is that it doesn't have the Big Eyed Fish/Bartender duo, which, in my opinion, is the best DMB song. 10/10
6-BARTENDER- Like I said, best DMB song, especially with an excellent live version. Not the best song on this show's setlist, though (we'll get to that later). 15/10
7-WHAT YOU ARE- The Ctrl. Pk. version of this is really weird at the beginning, and this one is ten times better. This version makes it a really good song. 10/10
8-CRASH INTO ME- DMB's most successful single is wonderful live. 10/10
9-EVERYDAY- Check out the video of this song-- I love it. A nice, happy song, almost (ALMOST!!) hippie. I love the vocals at the beginning with the `lovely ladies' helping out. 10/10
10-I DID IT- Well, we didn't get to the best song on this album yet, but this is the worst. Waaaaaay too fast and catchy for this setlist. Doesn't fit in AT ALL. Ick. 2/10
11-IF I HAD IT ALL- Mediocre, but better than "I Did It" (fortunately). 7/10
12-ANGEL- Ah, here we are. The only "monster track" on this CD is also the best one. This single track is worth the price of the whole CD. A wonderful sax solo followed by excellent guitar and lyrics, then a long, gospel solo by the lovely ladies. It's got a great message, and cool chord progressions at about 2:20. Perfection. 10000000/10
13-WAREHOUSE- This is a great song (I don't mean to sound redundant, but what else can be said about DMB?). I love the samba thing in the middle (and various other places in the song). Could be shorter, but it's well-equipped at 9:25 mins. 10/10
14-RECENTLY- Great lyrics, but that's the only strong point of this song. 8/10
15-DIGGING A DITCH- Not as good as the studio version, but it would be better if they had played it more live before this. 8/10
16-WHAT WOULD YOU SAY- I like the guitar lick, but the Ctrl. Pk. version is better (and longer). 8/10
17-ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER- I really loved this version of this song when I heard it for the first time on Central Pk., and this version is not nearly as good, but it's still superb. 10/10
18-THE SPACE BETWEEN- Good guitar, but not great. 8/10
19-STAY (WASTING TIME)- This is one of my favorites because of the funky sax lick in the middle. It's probably the third best on the CD after "Angel" and "Big Eyed Fish/Bartender." Love it. 11/10
20-TWO STEP- This is probably the best live version of this song that I've heard. Not too long, but there's still time to jam in this 9:18 version. 10/10
21-ANTS MARCHING- One of DMB's many signature songs, which is great, but the Central Pk. version is way better. A great closer, though. 10/10
I like Central Park better than this, but I also love the Big Eyed Fish/Bartender twins, so I guess this one is really close behind. Even though Bartender is great, the real reason this concert is so good is "Angel." Great CD. Buy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Unreal.......2005-11-20

By far the best Dave Matthews Band CD. Recorded at a great venue for their music. All the songs on this CD were great with excellent energy. You can definately feel the energy of the crowd in this CD. Excellent renditions of 'Warehouse' 'Crash Into Me' and 'Angel' are followed by the excellent energy of 'Two Step' 'All Along the Watchtower' and 'Ants Marching.' Live at Folsom Field is a must have for any Dave Matthews Band fan and serves as a great example of their music for new listeners.

Album Description

Double Violin Concerto was written for and performed here with the fiery virtuoso Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the acclaimed Colorado Symphony Orchestra is a stunning composition, intricate in it's construction and swinging in these magnificent performances that prompted the Rocky Mountain News to describe it as "...a work that leaps, sighs and bounces with unstoppable energy"

Also on this disc, O'Connor's much beloved "Appalachia Waltz," a duet performed with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, his "Johnny Appleseed Suite," (recorded for a Grammy-nominated children's album) and his own moving arrangement of "Amazing Grace."

5 out of 5 stars Fluid, lyrical, and emotional .......2005-10-26

Playing Time - 59:33 -- Recorded at Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver on two nights in November, 2003, "Double Violin Concerto" features violinists Mark O'Connor and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop. "Double Violin Concerto" was composed by O'Connor in 1997 and is his third symphonic concerto. Mark's goal was to achieve blues, jazz, swing and big band feelings, and he shows an extraordinary ability to accomplish it as only a virtuoso can. The piece was originally composed for Nadja and was premiered with the Chicago Symphony in 1999. The third movement, "Dixieland," gives the Orchestra's bass players and horns a good workout. Mark and Nadja also perform "Appalachia Waltz." O'Connor's "Johnny Appleseed Suite" is his 1994 orchestration of the children's music he originally composed for a Garrison Keillor disc and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Children's Recording. Friends John Jarvis (piano) and Bryan Sutton (guitar) join O'Connor and the Orchestra in a resplendent string journey. Long exquisite lines provide us with nostalgic views lost to the passing of time. The album closes with Mark's splendid rendition of "Amazing Grace" with Orchestra. His fluid, lyrical, and emotional style is truly heartwarming.

I first became familiar with Marin Alsop, the emerging superstar conductor when she was on the podium with the Eugene Symphony Orchestra. Her insight, instinct, intuition and interpretation of the music resulted in O'Connor calling her "the best friend to an American composer." Mark's collaboration with Nadja has spanned about six years, and he considers her to be "one the greatest violinists of not only our time but of all time." A diverse musician who has made a considerable name for himself in many walks of life, O'Connor has a down-to-earth style which is impeccable. Salerno-Sonnenberg's second violin is played with a more regimented classical approach. However, both have excellent command of the techniques to impressively play difficult passages and responses that complement each other. There are occasional flurries of notes and rapid-fire commentary, but the two indefatigable maestros fully understand each other. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars Expansive Americana.......2005-08-06

Mark O'Connor has become quite the composer in recent years. Known very well among the Nashville session musician circle as one of the great fiddle players of all times (his fiddle work is featured on the landmark 1987 TRIO album by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris), O'Connor has also ventured into the classical realm as well, taking his experiences in country and bluegrass and placing them into Classical Americana. And on this album, he gets some high-power assistance.

Specifically, that high-power assistance belongs to Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, one of the greatest classical violinists this nation has ever produced. Both her and O'Connor take up O'Connor's own Double Violin Concerto, which takes on elements of blues and jazz music, as well as his Appalachia Waltz, which he had previously recorded with bassist Edgar Meyer and cello virtuoso extraordinnaire Yo-Yo Ma. On the "Johnny Appleseed Suite", which O'Connor composed for a Grammy-nominated children's recording in the early 1990s, the composer is joined by good friends John Jarvis and Bryan Sutton in one of the truest expressions of Classical Americana since Aaron Copland's glory years. This recording ends with O'Connor's fine rendition of the ultimate American spiritual "Amazing Grace."

Best of all, there is great support to be had on this recording from the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and its Conductor Laureate Marin Alsop, one of the great conductors around today, female or otherwise. One could not have asked for better accompaniment than from this largely unknown orchestra or its fine conductor. And O'Connor, Salerno-Sonnenberg, and company are brilliant in their roles as well. A great recording to look out for, especially if one appreciates the heart and soul of America in classical form with some unique twists.

4 out of 5 stars A Terrific -- if Somewhat Misleading -- Place to Start.......2006-01-02

I got on the Blooze Bandwagon (along with Elton & Bernie & Gus Dudgeon doing "Funeral for a Friend" on "Yellow Brick Road" and other assorted flights of fanstasy) a day or two after I'd taken the THC plunge with so many others in 1973.

The Golden Era ('67 to '72) had come and gone, but the legacy of the Moodies' "Big Seven" was Big Time Entertainment in the "head set" of the time. As well as much cause for discussion: The music -was- terrific, but so were the lyrics (see my review of "To Our Children's Children's Children" elsewhere). The more literate folks -- including many in the entertainment industry -- on LA's West Side were as busy dissecting them for meaning as the folks on -Manhattan's- (upper) West Side. "God was Speaking to Us," we all just knew, "and these guys are His Prophets."

If ANARR has a flaw, it's that the lyrics (and the songs) that drove us into a spiritual frenzy in those days are largely missing from what is an otherwise -super- collection. I'll forgive it myself, largely on the strength of having seen the same show on a tennis court in Indian Wells in 1994 when I really -needed- a major distraction. They delivered then as they do on this terrific double album, combining at least some of symphonic hits that established them as The Real Deal (after establishing a "pop" rep in the mid-'60s) with the MTV-era hits in the '80s, all of which are Just Fine, Thank You.

As suggested vis Pink Floyd's "Delicate Sound of Thunder" on -that- Amazon page, if you're going to take a flyer at this band, -this- album is as good a place to start as any, at least to get a taste for the -music-. But -do- bear in mind that the -poetry- that made them cult icons in the Grand Days of Psychedelia is elsewhere, specifically on "TOCCC," "On the Threshhold of a Dream," "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor" and "A Question of Balance." If the names Rogers, Perls, Neitsche, Hesse, Poe, Casteneda, Bradshaw, Miller, Krishna Murti, Si Baba and Ram Dass ring any bells for you, those lyrics will paint some real pretty pictures.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas of 2005.......2005-12-29

I am a 19 year old hooked on the Moody Blues (ironic isn't it??). Back in my early years, my mother got me hooked on the Moody Blues because we both saw the "A Night at Red Rocks" concert (which I bought on DVD before asking for the Deluxe Edition) on PBS during a donation drive. From then on, I have been a fan of the Moody Blues. My mom originally owns the single disc version of this concert on CD with less tracks than the Deluxe Edition, and let me just say I borrowed it for a long period of time. So for Christmas 2005, I asked for the Deluxe Edition of the concert, and I couldn't be more happier. This CD has the entire concert that took place on that thursday evening in September back in 1992. It is digitally remastered and even has dialogue between the music. I am right now on the fourth time of listening to the CD on my DiscMan. For the record, also, my mother was happy because after I opened this gift I went upstairs to my room, brought down her gift, and said "Merry Christmas, Mother, here is your CD." Unfortunately, she is raging with jealousy since my CD has more tracks on it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Live Moody Blues Album.......2005-04-25

A NIGHT AT RED ROCKS WITH THE COLORADO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is an exceptional Moody Blues live album that shreds CAUGHT LIVE+5 for two reasons. First of all, the earlier live album had actually been cut in 1969, when the band was high on drugs and/or drunk. Secondly, G-d created Red Rocks Ampitheater with excellent acoustics, so you can hear each instrument on its own AND as part of the whole group. The songs are all acknowledged classics, and this setting shows how Justin Hayward's, John Lodge's, and Ray Thomas's voices have deepened and matured over the years. This album is an important addition to any Moody Blues collection.

3 out of 5 stars To be my Moody Blues CD.......2004-02-16

When I was much younger, indulging in whatever I considered to be neat then, I thought of the Moody Blues as having a "message." Just a few years after that, I tired of my older brother and his friends talking of these messages, as if there was something deep and profound to be learned from the music. At the time, I still liked the classic/rock mix, known by an English acquaintance as "prog rock."

Then, while living overseas in a former British colony, I picked up a British rock encyclopedia. It's somewhat limited, leaves out many of the pop/rock bands that have gone by the wayside after their heyday was over. But under the Moody Blues in the book, the author(s) seemed to think that the MBs made it more in the US than in the UK, that people tired of their "cosmic messages." That struck a (lost?) chord with me.

Since then, I talked with a member of the National Symphony who once backed the MBs. He said the orchestra was merely a stage prop, that nothing they played could be heard (and that the MB's management particularly was arrogant and obnoxious.

Well, onto the music.

Yeah, some of it is okay in terms of melody. If I were into dancing--which I'm not--I wouldn't enjoy it. But, yeah, I can hum along. But I can only picture the orchestra, brilliant musicians, overshadowed by the pseudo-deep pop stars.

In short, if you like their music, this is the one I'd get for people who, when they're at your house, ask if you have any Moody Blues. I doubt, though, that I'll get any more. There's variety, tunes from a number of their albums without too much fluff. It even sounds like a show I may have liked to attend, though, I'm not much for rock concerts, let along "prog rock." But this'll do. Enjoy it for when the MBs have another reunion--bound to happen until they turn 70.

5 out of 5 stars Beats Them All For Live Sound.......2004-01-23

It's not too difficult to choose which of the three `live' Moody Blues albums to buy. "Caught Live" is a recording mess actually from a 1968 performance and the latest, "Hall Of Fame" has too many rough points to really impress. This "full" concert from Red Rocks is unmatched by many live recordings, especially now that it has been remastered to near perfect quality. You can actually hear the difference between the original CD recording and this remastered version - it's that good.

The song selection is standard (or classic) Moody Blues, but the Colorado Symphony adds so much more ambiance. It is not a perfect orchestra, which makes it all the more appealing with a rock band. The booklet contains great information with photos and a thoughtful essay. The DVD makes a nice companion piece, but the sound through a set of headphones is mesmerizing. The only drawback might be the songs from, "Keys To The Kingdom", but that's not much to complain about.

Album Description

Naxos' American Classics series stages something of a coup: world famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie performs on an exciting disc of music by one of America's leading living composers. Gramophone Artist of the Year Marin Alsop directs the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in stunning performances and to crown the release, Daugherty himself writes the fascinating sleeve notes. The London Times has described Michael Daugherty as "a master icon-maker" and hailed his "maverick imagination, fearless structural sense and meticulous ear." His music has the uncanny knack of speaking everybody's language at once while retaining the ability to surprise, move, stimulate, inspire and amuse. Commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2001, Philadelphia Stories is an orchestral travelogue of the sounds and rhythms of Philadelphia past and present. Cast in three movements: the first begins at sundown, the second, a Poe-inspired movement entitled Tell-Tale Harp after midnight, and the third at sunrise. UFO, written in 1999 for Evelyn Glennie, is inspired by unidentified flying objects and sounds, beginning with Traveling Music where the percussion soloist, in the guise of an alien from outer space, mysteriously enters the concert hall playing a waterphone and mechanical siren.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Close Encounters Of The Colorado Kind.......2004-12-20

In its continuing exploration of American music and lesser-known U.S. orchestras, the budget label Naxos has given us one of its most provocative and innovative recordings to date. Michael Daugherty, the man behind the "Superman"-inspired "Metropolis Symphony", gives us two innovative works, "Philadelphia Stories" and the futuristic "UFO", a concerto for percussion and orchestra.

"Philadelphia Stories" is the composer's three-movement tone painting of the City of Brotherly Love, focusing in on aspects of street life ("Sundown On South Street"), the terror of Edgar Allan Poe ("The Tell-Tale Heart"), and the legacy of Leopold Stokowski ("Bells For Stokowski"). In this last movement, Daugherty imagines all the bells tolling in Philadelphia as the often-controversial conductor who put the Philadelphia Orchestra on the world map makes a visit to the Liberty Bell.

"UFO" shows off the impressive abilities of Scottish-born percussion maestra Evelyn Glennie in this concerto inspired, of course, by sightings of alien spacecraft in the night skies of Earth that have been reported since the Roswell incident of 1947. The piece is hugely reminiscent in sound and size of John Williams' score for Spielberg's 1977 sci-fi masterpiece CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, a trait that may or may not be intentional, but a trait that works quite well. Glennie's percussion abilities are second-to-none here.

Both works are bought together by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra under the inspired leadership of music director Marin Alsop, one of a handful of female conductors to lead an orchestra in major recordings. The Naxos sound technicians give her, Glennie, and the Colorado Symphony a first-rate sound on a relatively meager budget, resulting in an incredibly fascinating recording that is quite simply one of the best in 2004 insofar as classical music goes. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars "WICKED GOOD" (as we say here in Maine).......2007-05-31

I have two favorite all-time modern country and western albums. THIS is one of them. (I'll send you to the other one in a moment.)

You know how it is when you find one of those albums, the kind where every song on it is "better than the last one"? Well, this is certainly at the top of that kind of list. I will do something here that I rarely do...that is list songs and comments. It takes something special for me to do this.

1 BURNIN' A HOLE IN MY HEART....a great up-tempo song about love
2 A LIGHTER SHADE OF BLUE....thoughtful, loving song of loss
3 I DON'T HAVE FAR TO FALL....a great wonderfully crafted love song
4 AUTUMN'S NOT THAT COLD....another song about bittersweet love
5 THE COAST OF COLORADO....awesome beautiful love song about faithfullness
6 YOUR MEMORY WINS AGAIN....another bittersweet love song
7 DAD....one of the most sentimental, loving, songs I've ever heard by anyone. If this song does not fill your heart, you don't have one.
8 DON'T MIND IF I DO....clever, great song
9 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE....another awesome, sentimental, thoughtful, loving, song. Again, if you are not deeply moved by this song, you do not have a heart, nor do you care about those with less than you.
10 STILL UNDER THE WEATHER....another wonderful song about lost love.

Skip Ewing is one of those very rare people who's ability to sing or deliver a song is just magic and pure love. There are truly few people who can do this. I do not for the life of me understand his "disappearance" from the music scene, and I for one can tell you that he is "VERY greatly missed".

Do yourself a very great favor, and locate and pick up a copy of this album before it is completely unavailable at all....you will NEVER be sorry.

Now, for the second of these albums, do a search for "In This Live" by Colin Raye, and read my review of this album also.

Happy listening in both cases. ~operabruin

5 out of 5 stars IT WON'T LEAVE YOUR CD PLAYER........2003-03-09

This is a "must have" for any real country music lover. Skip Ewing known perhaps more for his song writing for others, shines also as a singer and instrumentalist. This album will tear your heart to pieces. If you enjoy well written, well played, well sung ballads then this is the album. Skip has it all, and should be a household name, how he isn't, makes one wonder after listening to his body of work. This album contains 7 classic ballads, 2 uptempo songs and 1 mid tempo work. The ballads mainly deal with loves lost or gone wrong, however the songs "Dad" and "The Gospel According To Luke" take the listener from wallowing in past romantic relationships to thoughts of parental love and religous wondering. While Skip's other albums are also great works of art, this is the best. His skill as a songwriter truly shines on this album, his style of writing is truly unique, worth having just to listen to the arrangement of words. Truly, a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Good Job, Colorado Mass Choir.......2007-05-02

I put this CD on and wondered why I hadn't purchase this CD earlier. My loss, but oh what an outstanding effort put forward by this choir. Joe Pace really know how to put things together. All the songs are well above average and you will be astounded at the vocal and musical arrangements on this CD. Play this CD and get your "Spiritual Breakhrough"!

5 out of 5 stars Top notch.......2007-03-11

You can always expect great anointed music from this choir. The full sounds of music and voices make their latest CD a true blessing!

4 out of 5 stars Stands up to repeated listenings -- what a flow.......2006-12-02

Joe Pace is an artistic minister that you can consistently count on to turn out sets that run from decent to great. This one is quite solid. While no individual song by itself is a groundbreaking standout, the flow of this CD is absolutely awesome. I just opened the jewel case yesterday and the disc is on its 5th spin as I write this.

As usual with Minister Pace's projects, we have consistently good arrangements, simple lyrics and good soloists who never get carried away. Of note is the brotha who leads the title track, who sounds a LOT like J. Moss. An effective church medley of old-school gospel hits is included and presented in a way that will be satisfying even to younger folks who may not recall the originals. And the overall selection of songs provides the mix of styles this crew is known for.

Again ... there is nothing earth-shattering here, but if you like spiritual music at all you're sure to really like or love PRAISE 'TIL YOU BREAK THROUGH. And fans of Joe Pace and Colorado Mass Choir will love and appreciate it right away, because it is typical in every way of one of their albums. Recommended.

In this live recording, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg proves again that she is a violinist and performer sui generis. Her pairing of a familiar favorite with the premiere of a brand-new work is as audacious as her playing, and she puts her very personal stamp on both. The Concerto by Clarice Assad grew out of the long association between the violinist and guitarists Sergio Assad, Clarice's father, and his brother Odair. The piece, written for Sonnenberg, is tailored to her strengths, her fiery temperament and her mercurial personality. Tonal and beautiful, its dreamy, long-breathing melodies offer the soloist ample opportunity to display her ravishing, infinitely variable tone; the lively, exuberant dances and excursions into the highest register exploit her masterful, brilliant technique. No composer could wish for a more persuasive advocate. Sonnenberg's approach to the Tchaikovsky is highly idiosyncratic, but also fresh and illuminating, especially in its unusual lightness and caressing capriciousness. Her tone ranges from throbbing intensity to floating, weightless delicacy; her romantic abandon, tempo changes and rhythmic liberties are unrestrained. Though she takes risks with a true virtuoso's fearlessness, even the fastest passages are models of clarity and her intonation is flawless. The orchestra supports her wonderfully, and brings out all the colors in Assad's shimmering, sparkling orchestration. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nadja LIVE recording .......2006-02-22

You just can't beat Nadja playing live, and this album is a testament to that. The Tchaik is just great, of course, but the thing that makes this CD extra special is Clarice Assad's Concerto, and the exquisite performance of it by Nadja and the orchestra.

I listen to the Assad piece most often. I truly love it. It has contemporary elements, a complex structure, with still a simple beauty. Sergio Assad (her Dad) must be extremely proud of her, and I'm sure she will continue to compose classical pieces, in addition to her Brazilian folk/jazz. Clarice is still relatively young, and very highly talented and skillful. Worthy of serious classical composition.

The title of this extraordinary collection of orchestral gems suggests both parody of and homage to Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man. But Joan Tower, as always, has her own artistic vision and nothing here is either a parody of or homage to anyone. There are five Fanfares and a tasty Duet for Orchestra. The main work here is a Concerto for Orchestra (1991), a dazzling exhibition of energetic exchanges between various orchestral groups that seems designed, like Paul Hindemith's Concerto for Orchestra (but not Bartók's), for smaller forces. This way the instrumental pairings stand out. But give credit here to Marin Alsop, the conductor, and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra for making these works both lucid and vibrant. This disc clearly belongs in any collection of late-20th-century music. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars Speeds your pulse, then lingers in your memory.......2005-11-02

Joan Tower's music has passion, personality and energy to spare. This album is a fine showcase of her music for orchestra, and though not easy listening, it's certainly among the most approachable and involving serious music of recent decades.

2 out of 5 stars more fanfares no one needs........2005-03-13

I would think those who proclaim the paradigm of feminism would want to chart a territory strickly their own rather than coming to terms with a man's macho world within establishment venues and repertoire;a world of testasterone filled expressions past down through chauvinistic HIS story. Tower with all these numerous "Fanfares" likes to Bop us with her ruler, like Sister Mary Mary(my grade school teacher) over the the head with her presence, and spirit. The Musical Sisterhood is hear to stay, with national organizations to boot; forget macho head games of high modernity dodecaphonic music or worse yet the meta-EGO of Stockhausen's clones and their lot. The reference is obvious to Copland's celebrated "Fanfare for the Common Man" a work for brass and percussion proclaiming in a very small way the Democracies of the West with the fall of tyrannies first Fascism then Soviet Communism, (where is the common man today with corrupt Enron tyrannies stealing pension funds)
Tower's exergue(orientation) here is a bit overextended I think, she should pursue her own musical language not simply "tail-end" the man's repertoire, her early works had dabbled in 12 Tone language in a modest way, it was like a language she didn't feel comfortable in. She feels comfortable in the comfortable with a Eastern Establishment lyricism a la Thompson,Rorem,Schuman,Hansonpouring her spirit tried and tested traditional forms.I though feminism is about innovation and challenge? but the Concerto features moments of brilliant orchestrations, yet not quite original nor innovative enough to sustain interest past one-single hearing.
And Why numerous"Fanfares" isn't one enough?,Well post-modernity is at work here, something unavoidable for either sex the idea of "franchise" if one is good like a McDonald's chain, well do another!!rubber stamp out the fanfares!!, we all need more of it.
Why not write on opera on the struggles of women in the last century or current century women from Rwanda, or Darfur,or Palestine or past HER story Harriet Tubman,Mother Teresa, the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo,or the Armagh Women in Ireland,Rosa Luxemburg.

5 out of 5 stars "Sound & Visions" series - Great Invention!.......2005-10-29

It's not too difficult to choose which of the three `live' Moody Blues albums (or series in this case) to buy.

The booklet contains great information with plenty of photos and a thorough essay. Two of the discs contain 23 songs - the full concert and the DVD displays the show with 19 songs. This "SOund & Vision" series is a great idea for the true fan and the ultimate audiophile.

5 out of 5 stars What a great place to see a concert........2005-08-22

I put off purchasing this album for some time. I have replaced all of my albums with CD's now. If you forgot Albums were made of Vinyl at one time and I have many of there albums and use a B&O table to listen to them once in a while. Now I have my CD's on my media center and listening is so easy the CD's are great. I purchased this Box Set to get the latest mastering of the CD's as well as the DVD I found the quality much better than I remember it. The Colorado Symphony is wonderful and sounds so good with them. I have heard that some feel that they over power some songs but I do not. The mix of music is acceptable but would have been nice if more were on it. If you purchase the two disks CD set this is only about $9.00 more and you get the DVD. One thing I did notice a few times during the performance is Ray Thomas has no emotion sometimes or a weird expression. Justin well what a voice and John is great also but not young anymore. My favorite track is with out a doubt, Isn't Life Strange and Tuesday Afternoon. Perhaps I am little bios on this group as its one of my favorites. If your new to the Moody Blues your going to get a treat when you listen to all of there great music. If you not like me you will have mixed feeling about this concert. Over all I think the purchase was well worth it. I like to listen to the Moody Blues Live I think some or most of there music is just meant for it. I only wish I had seen them Live long ago but did not. I would pay today top money to see them at Red Rocks, that I have been to and wow what a place......
