5 out of 5 stars Passionate Drama in a Passionate Performance.......1998-10-29

Schoeck's Penthesilea is an opera about gender / role conficts. The heroine Penthesilea is bound to her duties as queen of the amazones, a tribe of women warriors that woe a man by defeating him in battle. She falls in love with Archilleus, thinking she has struck him on the battle fields of Troy. When she realizes that he, not she, fell in the strive and fainted, she hunts him down in despair of never being his mate and eats him alive. Sounds very gory, however the focus of the drama is on the characters and the result of her conflict is very remote and off stage. The language of the drama by Kleist, one of the geniuses of German language is so wonderful and intriguing, that I feel drawn in immediately into the conflict. It is one of the few operas that uses the original drama without much interference by the composer. Music and text compliment each other so well, that there is no moment of uneasyness or embarassement. I wish there would be more recordings of this opera than the two I know and love. This live performance is done by one of the masters of 20th century conductors, but no fear, composition and performance is passionate and high energy. It is one of my favorate recordings.

5 out of 5 stars A masterful collection of folk music !.......1999-09-11

Sima Bina, after 20 years of silence, has managed to get everyone's attention fixated at the music of Khorasan, a part of Iran that had not recieved much attention in the past. She brings to life a melodious tale of people of Khorasan and their music in a series of recordings that this latest album is an awsome sequel to all the previous works! Way to go Sima Bina! keep up the good work!

5 out of 5 stars It's Nava'i and it's beautiful.......1999-04-02

This is perhaps the best CD by Sima Bina, and also a great Iranian CD in general. There is something about the music and the songs that's just "from the heart to the heart."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Compilation .......2007-01-11

I consider this recording to be surely one of the best on CD of the Magic Flute. Everyone is in excellent voice. June Anderson's top notes ring out with great strength and freedom as the Queen of the Night, and her coloratura work in the first act aria, "O zittre nicht", is exquisitely beautiful and the highpoint of the CD. Jerry Hadley does a fine lyric job as Tamino (I was surprised). Barbara Hendricks' lovely voice is perfectly suited for the role of Pamina, which she sings admirably. Robert Lloyd sings Sarastro with an impressively strong and deep voice, and Thomas Allen does a wonderful job as Papageno. In addition, you get a whopping 77 minutes of all-digital music and a booklet with the background of the opera and pictures of the singers. What a deal! The one fault in the whole opera, though, is that Sir Charles Mackerras takes Pamina's aria "Ach, ich fuhl's" a little too quickly, giving some convoluted historical reason for the faster tempo in the booklet's notes.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best.......2005-09-01

The one thing I've learned about Omoumi's style and recordings is that you hear too much forced breath, often giving a dry timbre to the ney; you can hear the air forcefully beeing blown into the instrument. It sounds like when you have hair on your lips and you "poof" it away. I've heard other ney players who avoid that style and the sudden rough sound. And, on this particular album, the "zarbi" sections aren't as fast as one expects them to be. Zarbi of the mode Homayoun is more beautiful when played faster than this. His ney speaks of sorrow and even bitterness. I prefer neys which speak of passion and love.

5 out of 5 stars The distinction of blurring.......2004-09-06

I got hold of this album after I was sent a copy of the CD of the latest work of Omoumi and Khaladj, Sarmast (2004), which seems not be available here yet.
It is quite educational to listen to these two works so many years apart. On the other hand I wish to have heard their albums in the proper sequence as this one was a clear foundation for Sarmast. Here we hear these masters at their first collaborative concert. Technically flawless and fluid.
If you plan to get a copy of Sarmast (Trance of Devotion), which I highly recommend, then you should listen to the first disc in this album very intently. Listen to the way in which the two masters fill the space carefully with melody and rhythm with instruments which are expected to do just one or the other.
As you may know, the ney (reed flute) is usually the melodic voice and the tombak (challis drum) is the percussive instrument which sets and carries the rhythm. This stereotype is broken down here. Sometimes Omoumi's ney becomes the base for a melody "suggested" by Khaladj's tombak, as if the suggestion then leads the ney to pick that melody and turn into a new path.
This blurring between the usual voices defined by the ney and the tombak will reach new levels of sophistication in the next collaboration of these two master musicians where the human voice is intertwined as a new layer. Here they introduce something that foreshadows major technical and musical developments which we can now witness in Sarmast.
I regret that at this time I have not listened to the second CD long enough to be able to do a review I would consider worthy of their work. On a vice real level I enjoy Sima Bina's voice and musical understanding. I need some time to fit the whole picture and will update this review accordingly. I wanted to alert fans of Omoumi and Khaladj to the importance of the first CD in this album as a precursor to their latest collaboration.

Thanks to the previous reviewer Dr. Omidpanah whose recommendation made me buy this album. I agree that this is a masterpiece of the Persian classical music by Sima Bina, it is beautiful in every sense. Although I have other CD's from her, I can't get enough listening to this one.

5 out of 5 stars listen, relax, imagine paradise with peace and tranquility.......1998-11-26

I have listened to this master piece of the Persian classical music and should recommend it to the music lovers especially, those who are interested in the world music. Sima Bina, a legend of the Persian music has dedicated her life to the enhancement of the Iranian Folk Music for more than 30 years. She has vigorously traveled to many parts of Iran and has collected many pieces of folk music for the first time in the Iranian history. This talented woman should be admired not only as a star singer, but a musician and a historian. With this CD, Sima Bina and Hossein Omoumi have done a great contribution to the Persian classical music. Listen, relax, and Imagine paradise with peace and tranquility.

      5 out of 5 stars just beautiful.......2007-05-12

When I first bought this CD I was addicted for a while. The singing is beautiful and the music is too. I had hoped for more traditional japanese instruments but it is still beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars Not very eastern -- at all.......2003-07-25

Well, this is very beautiful, and it is very relaxing. I'm sure the quality of the voice work done on this disc is excellent, though I'm not an expert.

The problem is, it is not Japanese, except for the songs themselves. The instrumentation is completely western, and the arrangements of the songs tend to downplay the eastern sound of the compositions. Maybe I just didn't understand what this would be: I didn't expect koto music or anything, but I did expect to expose my children to a different type of musical structure.

      5 out of 5 stars ..a little more information.......1998-08-15

Mera is a male countertenor from Japan. He appears to be quite young and may be just starting his career. Whereas most countertenors I've heard have a boy-soprano, brassy sound, Mera has a mellow, mezzo sound with a nice vibrato. I've never heard a male voice like it.

All songs on the album are sung in Japanese. There are no translations of the songs, but there are summaries which give you an idea of what the song is about. The Japanese lyrics are included, so if you can read/translate them, you'll know more than I do. (If you do translate them, please contact me. I'd like to have copies.)

      5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......1998-08-04

Mera has the most beautiful voice I've heard in a long time. Sounds like a female mezzo but with a little mellower sound. Anyway, this album has lighter fare than his Japanese art songs album, but it's still lovely to listen to. He sings some familiar and some not so familiar folk songs.

If you like this album, you might try his other album "Nightengale" (Japanese art songs).
