The standard by which ALL Latino music should be measured!.......2007-04-10

Though I grew up on the Lower east side of Manhattan I was never much into Latin music or Salsa. My brother however is a fanatic and gave me this album back in 1979 with a dedication in Spanish from Ruben Blades! Needless to say this has become an heirloom.

As for the music, upon hearing the songs I was instantly struck by the fact that this did not sound like any other latin music I'd ever heard. The Lyrics were actually meaningful, uplifting, exhorting! The masterful music infused with Willie Colon's breathtaking orchestration will take you away to musical bliss. All of this while accomplishing the impossible; EVERY song can be danced to yet simultaneously meditated on. The thought provoking lyrics will have you rethinking your role as a Latino while tapping your feet.

There is no filler on Siembra. There is not one bad song on the album. My 15 year old just heard it recently and was blown away, a testament to this true Masterpiece that will live on for decades.

One of latin music's most important recording!.......2006-05-25

This is the new remastered edition of this classic Willie Colon recording featuring Ruben Blades on vocals. The lyrical aspect of this recording has been covered elsewhere so I'm not going to dwell on it besides metioning that most of the lyrics deal with the political reality of the "latino everyman."
The reissue has all the original cover art and an appropiate essay covering the significance of this recording. The only drawback is that it didn't include the lyric sheet or additional tracks. I'm sure that someone, somewhere has to have outakes from these sessions. Maybe these things will come as a part of a box set of another "commemorative" edition once everyone involved "gets paid."
Otherwise, the sound is louder, more focused and a bit cleaner. But again as with some of these new Fania remasters, the top end is rounded off to eliminate hiss. I find that bothersome, but I'm just being picky.

One of the most important latin recordings of all time!.......2005-11-01

This is the jewel of the Willie Colon catalogue. With songs that are politically charged and so well crafted, this album is the summation of the Colon-Blades recordings. Most of these tracks were hits when released. The best track, in my humble opinion, is the haunting "Dime."
The personnel included among others, Sal Cuevas on bass, Willie Colon on bass trumpet and Eddie Montalvo on congas, Jose Rodrigues, Papo Vasquez, Leopoldo Pineda on slide t-bones.
By far, this was Willie's best band. They were tight, and also well produced and recorded.
The only critique is the remastering. Although better than most of the Fania reissues, the sound could have been truly enhanced to faithfully reproduce the warmth and detail of the original lp.
Besides that point, this album should belong in any music lover's collection. It's a classic!

Unique; a masterpiece.......2005-10-02

This CD is basically perfect. Willie's band had never sounded as tight as on "Siembra"; musically well crafted. The lyrics took "Salsa" to a new level, and Ruben finally bloomed as a vocalist, showcasing his vocal talents as well as his "sonero" abilities like never before. Every single track is amazing.

In other words, this might be the best CD Fania Records ever released.

Best Salsa Production Ever!!.......2004-12-28

I was 15 years old and living in the New York; Da Bronx to be more specific and can remember hearing this played over and over again while travling thought different neighborhoods. Back then I never payed much attention to the lyrics but over the time I would understand it's message. The production of this recording is truly one of a kind, never to be duplicated. My favorite tune on this CD is "Siembra". Now that I'm showing gray hair I realized just how important that song was to me, and the good fruits I have harvested throughtout life. It deserves 5 stars, nothing less.

Best ever recorded.......2007-01-18

I am surprised there is only 8 reviews for this. I am a long time (very long) latin music fan, own over 1,000 albums in different formats (cd, lp, etc.) and this is without question the BEST salsa album of all time. Maybe you could make an argument about Larry Harlow's Hommy, or El Gran Combo's "Aqui no se Sienta Nadie," but this is a more complete, well rounded compilation, simply said, if you own ONE salsa album, it should be this one. Every song was a hit, every song is a classic.

Qué mas se puede decir..........2002-02-13

¿Se puede agregar algo más a esta altura sobre este CD? Pienso que muy poco, excepto una apreciación personal. "Siembra" es un clásico de la salsa, aunque no el disco de Rubén que más me gusta. Prefiero la variedad y la temática de "La Rosa de los Vientos" y "Maestra Vida", pero "Siembra" es una piedra fundamental, un disco que abre puertas y caminos. Por si queda alguna duda sobre su calidad, basta decir que acá viene "Pedro Navaja", un himno de Latinoamérica y de la salsa, un himno, un clásico.

Es definitivamente el mejor disco de salsa de todos los tiempos. El equilibrio refinado entre el contenido y la calidad musical es inigualable. Representa un fin y sintesis de la era de oro de la musica latina de los '70. Es cierto Hector Lavoe es cantante de los cantantes, Celia, Rivera y Feliciano los mas grandes soneros, pero el duo Colon - Blades en este album es simplemente perfecto. Todas las piezas de este disco son exitos por si mismas. 5 estrellas no bastan. 6 estrellas!

If you don't have it, your Salsa collection is simply incomplete! My original LP mysteriously disappeared years ago. I got it as soon as the CD format was issued. You can dance to this one all by yourself! Colon & Blades own the hearts of Salseros everywhere by producing this classic.

SIEMBRA ROCKS!.......2005-05-21

This album totally blew me away. I was able to witness OriXa's live performance at its best at their cd release party in 2005 in San Francisco - and got hooked forever! The sound of ORIXA grabs a hold of something deep inside and SHAKES ya! Even for a non-spanish speaker, there is enough Spanglish to understand the gist of each song - and like I said, the music takes you there.
"Siembra" reaches far and wide and pulls all the elements of hip hop, electronica, reggae, latin grooves and catchy lyrics together to create a fabulous synergy of audio flavas. Check it out!
The video Siembra is Buzzworthy n MTV-es and The American video should be out soon - stay tuned in!

You know. for years now I've been witnessing "rock en espanol" come through the warehouse of CD Baby and suddenly, either the planets are aligned or a tide turned somewhere because without warning, some of the best spanish rock I've ever heard is to be found right here. Orixa is without a doubt, one of these bands. From the downbeat of the first track, when my jaw hit the floor, there was no question that this is a winning album. Drawing from influences of rock, punk, hip hop and electronica, they shove back the preconceptions and push ahead with simply solid, groove-endowed hits.
