Let me preface this by saying that IMHO, Hector Lavoe's birthday should be come a national holiday. But I digress.

One of Hector's best solo albums, Que Sentimiento is one of the few albums done without Willie Colon's pressence. Willie's not on horns, not credited with having written anything on the disc, and it appears that he was in no way present for this album. That said, with this album one gets to appreciate the true genius that was Hector Lavoe.

Of note is the significantly increased production values that are apparent on the songs. Flutes, strings and other instruments not traditionally associated with salsa are present during many tracks, almost giving a preview to the studio sounds of 1980's salsa.

It always stuck with me that this is somehow an album of contrasts. It starts with a love song, is followed up by a track about a woman who leaves her man and then ends with a breakup. One song is about a man who can not (or will not) work (which comes right after his song about youth), then in a soneo during a later track, he sings (this part's translated for non spanish speakers) "even though you may not want it I am heading off to work".

Que Sentimiento means "what an emotion" so it would make sense that this album would take you through a full array of feelings, from love to jealousy, from resentment to longing. Most of it BEGS your feet to move along, and forces your lips to purse and whistle the tunes (loudly) as they blare into your ear (and passers-by give you oddball looks).

For the first track Hector sings about his desire for a truer, deeper love. His voice has a genuine need to find a sincere love. When he meets her, the soneos about finding true love add a sense of freshness, kind of like finding true love (Count Cheese Strikes Again!)

From there the album goes silly, with a song about a woman who left her husband. The line "quizas tu la encuentras fea pero aquel se la esta gozando" (you may find your woman ugly but that fella' is totally diggin' her") explains it all.

Ya ta cansa has a painfully catchy chorus. Like a ranchtooth that won't shut up, this song knows how to get into the part of the brain that gets jingles stuck in the old noggin'. The man who writes the song doesn't want to work, but the line "no quiero trabajar" can easily be replaced with "no quiero taco bell". Sing it like that and I guarantee you won't be able to get the chorus out of your head, EVER. It's really that catchy. Check this one out for the great flute playing at the end. Yeah, I said great flute playing, that was not a typo.

Soy Vagabundo is such a deep song that years later it still seems too tough for my BA having self to totally figure out. On the one end, he claims himself to be a vagabond, the sort of fella who isn't where he doesn't need to be. On another level, he's very critical of suburban and consumerist society. Meanwhile there's the matter of the music behind it. A slow starter that builds up a mountain of horns so impressive that it even gets Hector to say "¡ah pues!". It's almost as if the horns are so powerful they even overpower the singer.

El Son Borincano is just plain awesome. The soneo is almost too good here. My second digression of the review is a question of why everyone gives Cubans so much credit for Salsa when even Son (which is Cuban) is best remembered for the Puerto Ricans who perfected it. Hector Lavoe and Ismael Rivera give us every reason to believe the music should instead be known as Afro-Puerto Rican"(In your face HABANA). But as stated, that's a digression. Solid piano playing, haunting chants in the background and Hector's beautiful soneo at the end are all reasons to love this song.

I don't generally listen to slow tracks, so don't ask me if track 7 is good. For whatever it's worth, the song has a cute ending that leads us to the final inning.

But before sending us home, Hector sets us ablaze with this flamethrower of a closing track. I have bought several copies of this disc for that song alone (the lost copies were loaners that never got returned, because everyone seems to love this track). If only for the hilarious "disses", this album is worth every penny.

Trust that if you pick this one up, and you too will say "me saque la loteria". Recommended to fans of Hector Lavoe's work with Willie Colon, lovers of salsa, and those who'd like to prove my statements about Son wrong (and don't worry, you won't be able to).

This is a very good CD performed by a first-rate bandoneon player and excellent musician and scholar. This uruguayan bandoneon player has traveled around the world with his wonderful interpretations and this CD is a perfect opportunity to enjoy Marino Rivero's art and to learn about uruguayan music as well as to listen to his special instrument which was acquired in 1930 and maintainted exactly as it came from the factory in Germany.

I attended one of Marino Rivero's recitals in Punta del Este, Uruguay and whether interpreting Bach or a piece of uruguayan tango, he always shows off as a first- rate artist. All his CDs are highly recommendable.

Incredible album.......2006-02-11

I've got to write this review because I was somewhat disappointed that the reviews here on Amazon don't do justice to this fabulous album.

This, the first release of Los Delinqüentes is by far their best album, mostly motivated by the death of "Er Migue" the band's singer and main strength.

Well, sure you've inferred that I consider this album to be a
masterpiece in new flamenco music and really you've to hear it and feel it. The band roots on one of the poorest zones of Jerez contrasts with the deep happiness present in the music, as it's clearly stated throughout the album.

The kind of music employed here is unique in that it doesn't belongs to the traditional flamenco roots, being more of a successor of Amador brothers "Pata Negra". The setup is extremely simple, with the three members playing guitar and some additional percussion, although the musicianship of the members is notable. The main characteristic is the fusion of Blues music with flamenco, as pioneered by "Pata Negra". The performance of the singer is astonishing.

Speaking of the lyrics, I see them as a fundamental point in the album and are great, so I can only recommend that if you try to listen this album you should learn/translate the Spanish used. Be wary that the Spanish used here is mostly slang, so it's not easy to understand them. The main point of this album is their own way of living, with nothing to lose, sleeping in the streets and trying get some food, nevertheless they are very happy with this way of living, telling you that happiness is nothing that you can buy. Most of my friends consider that playing this album repeatedly is the strongest anti-depressant we've ever seen.

Anyways, is hard to explain this album in writing, try to listen to it, and I'd like that you could go to a concert of these guys as they were incredible. Unfortunately this is not possible, but you can find some bootlegs of them playing with the old band setup. No official videos sorry.

As much of a fan of the work Hector Lavoe did with Willie Colon, I was never as into their solo efforts. Not to say they were stinkers of course; Willie's later albums with Celia Cruz and Ruben Blades were classics in their own light, and Hector's "Hector Lavoe Strikes Back" album was nominated for a Grammy.

That said, this album is my favorite of Hector's solo works. The first track, Amor Soñado is a tender song calling out for true love. You can feel Lavoe's solitude on this track and the strength of his backing band on this strong opener.

Lo Deje Llorando is a comic work, all about a guy who was left on the pier waiting for his sweetie who left him, done from the woman's perspective, of course.

I like the mixture of tracks on the album, but am most impressed with the closing song "No Hay Quien te Aguante". Just as the album begins with a sweet song searching for love, the album ends with an angry tune written to spite an ex girlfriend. THIS is the ultimate break up tune and must be listened to anyone who has happily gotten out of a bad relationship, or as a reminder to why you are better off alone to anyone who has been dumped.

As with all of Hector's work, this album is a classic, but I heartily recommend this over his other solo efforts. For those inclined to dance, check out "El Juicio", "Lo Mato" or "Crime Pays". Those albums, done by Hector Lavoe and Willie Colon together, are in my humble opinion, some of the best salsa albums ever recorded.

"El Cantante" soars to new heights on thisone........2003-06-16

This 1981 release was Hector Lavoe's only self-produced project and it has a more personal feel. "Amor Sonado" and "Lo Deje Llorando" are enough to buy the whole album but his rendition of the much-covered bolero "Seguire Mi Viaje" is surprisingly good and adds a nice romantic touch.

Recientemente me encontre con JORGE LEWIS en su ultimo concierto en lawrence,ma y me parecio increible como este joven muchacho acaparo la atencion de todos al instante. Que calidad vocal y hasta es comico de mas., a la verdad me hizo pasar una noche muy agradable. despues del show se hacerco a nuestra mesa y compartio no tan solo con nosotros si no con todo el publico que estuvo en el establecimiento.Es bueno saber que un joven con tanto talento tiene los pies bien puestos sobre la tierra. i totall enjoyed jorge lewises first album.i was estatic to find another on the shelves not too long after .what a treat. the only thing that i enjoyed more than his album were the videos. what a talent.he must be one of the luckiest men aliveto be gifted with a heavenly voice and as beautiful as david himself.if anyone hears from pls tell him to keep it comming.if there is a god jorge will grace us with more videos.
