Judee Sill
Judee Sill was just 35 when she died of a drug overdose in 1979, never having extended what seemed to be an unlimited potential on this, her debut record, released just eight years before. With the wits of a poet and the intonation of an angel, the post-hippie Californian laced her original compositions with astral and religious imagery--and feelings of hopelessness--and then executed them with the pop lavishness of Karen Carpenter. Sill's contemporaneous acoustic folk is sparely backed, while her multitracked vocals add to the redemptive eeriness of supernatural songs like "Lopin' Along thru the Cosmos," "The Phantom Cowboy," and "Enchanted Sky Machines." That Graham Nash produced the minor radio hit "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" (and later saw it covered by his former band the Hollies) attests that Sill was running with the right crowd. But despairing lyrics like "Guess reality is not as it seems / So I sit here hoping for truth and a ride to the other side" ("Crayon Angels") suggest that Judee Sill was conscious that her life could be brief. Thankfully, she left this behind. --Scott Holter
Heart Food
Judee Sill's follow-up to her 1971 self-titled debut sadly also turned out to be her final album, yet Heart Food stands neck and neck with its wondrous predecessor as a near-flawless slice of 1970s pop-flavored Laurel Canyon folk. The production and arrangements here are much grander then on Judee Sill, with her original piano- and guitar-driven songs enhanced by strings, church organ, harmonica, pedal steel, kettle drums, and even male vocals. But no matter the song--be it the Brian Wilson-influenced "The Vigilante," the country-flavored "There's a Rugged Road," or the piano-solo delight "When the Bridegroom Comes"--it all comes back to Sill's virginal voice, which twists and teeters in varying octaves and moods, sometimes within the same track. Sadly, her deliberate songwriting style denied her any chance at a third album. Drugs claimed Judee Sill's life just five years after Heart Food, which can serve as an alluring introduction to this brilliant artist or as a proud bookend to her more-appreciated debut. --Scott Holter

Defective Liner Notes.......2006-12-06
I love the music, but the copy I received (from Amazon) was missing some pages from the liner notes. I wanted to exchange it for another copy, but Amazon said no. I tried contacting Rhino, and they never did anything. How can I get the liner notes without having to buy a whole new CD?
Essential Sill in one package.......2006-08-19
Regardless of the shoddy slipcase that totally LOOKS budget (and really, I didn't buy this set for the slipcase) - this is an essential item in any serious music collector's library. Judee Sill went overlooked in her lifetime and it really is dumbfounding as to why when listening to these CDs. She's got a plain, yet completely touching voice -- slight twang, and remarkably similar to the motherly Kate McGarrigle -- and this voice cannot lie when lyrics are sung through it. She believes what she is singing about, and I love that. Everything you've read about her arrangements and tunes are true: they are grand, understated at times, overstated never, and utterly get under your skin even after just the first play. To get her brilliant two albums in one set for a very low price is a gift. The booklet is fabulous, great photos of Judee with sensitively written liner notes and great detail into the mastering of these CDs (particularly about 'preserving' the distortion in the masters.) The material on these discs are the exact same as the two Rhino Handmade discs released a few years ago. [and believe it or not, a bit of a better mastering job!] so stop staring at those $50+ copies here on Amazon -- unless you are a true Judee Sill COLLECTOR in the sense that you need every edition pressed ever, this is what you want. You get her two timeless records, and those great great demos and that STELLAR live performance all here for next to nothing. Lovely, brilliant, about time!
Best thing in 2006.......2006-08-08
I discovered Judee Sill in internet activities. Buying this 2-CD set was my first opportunity to hear her singing at a volume and sound quality that I can appreciate. On some Warren Zevon web page, I found words and chords for "Jesus Was a Cross Maker," a Judee Sill song that was on his `Mutineer' CD in 1995. The original version by Judee Sill that I found at MySpace.com introduced me to her abilities as a Gospel pianist, which are particularly powerful on the renditions of "Enchanted Sky Machines" that are on Disc One of this set.
"Crayon Angels" has one of the lines that gives me one of the biggest Judee Sill laughs I've had in the last month. After the false prophets caused her heavenly visions to disappear:
"the angels came back and laughed in my dreams,
I wonder what it means."

a complilation like this should have been assembled by rhino years ago. instead, rhino handmade released limited editions of sill's first and second asylum recordings as individual packages, both of which included studio "demos", and live performances as added bonus cuts.
the reissue producer gives a technical statement of how this compilation differs from all previously released versions of both albums in terms of distorted vocal levels that were/are part of the existing master tapes. for those familiar with the recordings, the distortions were part of the mixing and mastering process, and thus cannot be corrected. enough said.
the music is some of the most gorgeous, powerful, and haunting recorded material i have heard from anybody. let the music of judee sill take you away. the packaging is beautifully assembled. for those of you who could not buy the rhino handmade series, here is your chance to have most of what was issued on those limited releases.
at the price of this admission, you must pick up a copy immediately.
Judee is magical..........2006-06-21
I bought her first album when it was released years ago. This was the age of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and so many other wonderfully talented singer-songwriters. I thought Judee would be a star right along all the rest of them. Her spaced-out spirituals were haunting and mysterious to me. Her troubled life ended her singing career after two albums, however, and she seemed to disappear. I never purchased her second record and looked for it for years in used record stores. I continued to listen to the album I had and later read about her early death. It made me sad. I was happy, however, to learn that she wasn't forgotten when I saw her two albums re-released with great additional tracks on CDs a few years ago. Now Judee's music continues to take me to far away places. She is a classic hippie-chick songwriter of the early '70s. Listen to songs like "Lopin' Along Thru the Cosmos" or "The Phoenix" and you'll get the flavor of the times. These folk spirituals are colorful and lyrical. Her voice is pure and simple.

Not Bad.......2007-05-05
While much of this album is not Steve Miller's best work, it is certainly ok, I got this album, mainly for the songs "Keeps Me Wondering Why" and the full length version of "Abracadabra". The rest of the songs are not quite as good, but they aren't terrible, either. Of course, if you are a die-hard Steve Miller fan, you will want this, the casual fan probably wouldn't want this.
steve miller band abracadabra 1982.......2005-03-21
there was a total of 6 songs that i thought was the best tracks on this cd title song abracadabra is one and keep me wonder why something special things i told you and cool magic an while iam waiting 6 out of 10 is not bad . been a fan of steve miller way back when fly like an eagle came out. liked his singing and back up vocals on this cd classic steve miller enjoyed the cd .
One good song and the rest ..........2005-01-19
Steve Miller was going to originally release Abracadabra on a previous album Circle of Love. Steve was not ready to release it for that album because he didn't think it was ready. Had he released Abracadabra on the Circle Of Love album, he would have had his third megahit album (after Fly Like An Eagle and Book of Dreams). That album sounded great but you sure can't find Circle of Love anymore which by the way came out in 1981. So in the summer of 1982, he releases Abracadabra: one great song and the rest were totally forgettable. PS -- The hit on the Circle of Love Album was Heart Like A Wheel.
Mistake By the Lake.......2004-06-11
Steve Miller is a legend. Abracadabra is his illegitimate child. Thank god there's only one copy left at Amazon--maybe, if we pray, this album will just get lost at the state fair, take up life as a carney, and we won't hear from it again. Come on man, The Joker? Fly like an Eagle? Take the Money and Run? Apparently Steve took the latter a bit too seriously with this trainwreck.
Fantastic Revisit Of A Favorite Band!.......2003-12-06
In 1982 it had been a while since Steve Miller Band had a hit of any note and he got one in the tital cut of this album-and
it WAS a big one!The opener "Keep Me Wondering Why" is a slightly
rockier varrition on the tital track's sound while "Give It Up"
is a bouncy, carnivalesqe little rocker tossed off for good measure.Beach Boys harmonies abound on "Something Special"
while casually rocking pop number like "Never Say No" and "Cool Magic" make "Abracadabra" classic Steve Miller in the same potent mix as "Fly Like An Eagle","The Joker" and his other classic albums!

A big surprise.......2003-10-12
I don't generally like Allan Holdsworth. Nor do I usually like jazz/rock. So I'm really suprised at how much I've enjoyed this disc.
I think it's primarily because alto sax and saxello player Elton Dean finds himself in a context where his innate melodicism comes to the fore and his declamatory, expressivist tendencies are properly situated. For me, this constitutes his finest playing on record, and I've heard him in quite a lot of settings, including lots of his recent extended avant-garde outings.
Holdsworth, too, seems more interested in melodic and rhythmic nuance than mere pyrotechnics. The other players, Hugh Hopper (bass) and John Marshall (drums) consistently provide engaging rhythmic support. Not revolutionary but hugely satisfying.
Truly inspiring.......2003-09-12
I am a Holdsworth fan. I've pretty much grabbed up everything he's done. This disc instantly became one of my favs. The open feel to this album makes for good background music and should appeal to even those persons who can't get a grip on Allan's other work. Allan's playing is relaxed and free. I think he's under less pressure when he is not overly in control of the whole recording process, which I believe is the thing he's been missing on a lot of his own discs. Elton Dean plays some soulful sax which can be tense and moody.
Great disc, how about more?

Abracadabra Is Fabulously Delicious!!!.......2005-06-25
I have been an ABC Martin Fry fan for as long as I can rememeber. This band has never gotten the recognition it deserves. We all know that the Lexicon Of Love is an absolute masterpiece from beginning to end but Abracadabra comes very very close. It is definately their best since the debut of Lexicon Of Love. It surpasses Alphabet City and the quirky How To Be A Millionaire by far. The music is funky, jazzy, soulful, with a club twist without the annoying standard club beat machine. And, what can be said about that soulful, sexy sound that comes from Martin Fry. It just doesn't get any better!!!
and Hocus Pocus too! Mark & Martin's swan song remembered.......2004-03-18
Amidst the bargain bins, somewhere between a Color Me Bad sales disaster release and multi-copies of Marky Mark's "You gotta believe", you'll find nestled another 'marketing miss' by the English new wave duo ABC, who created some of the genre's most memorable, soul-bearing, and finest pop records of the 1980s. 1991's MCA-only release "Abracadabra" was quick to enter discontinuity after two singles failed to make an impact on the US Pop charts given the duo's high expectations.
Despite the misfortunes of MCA (the company underwent major executive changes that trickled downward), ABC created a fantastic arangement of smooth-dance layered with jazz-esque rythms and cutting edge synth production. Fans of ABC won't be surprised to see the duo exploring yet another musical direction (from "Lexicon of Love's" orchestrated synth harmonies to "Up's" house dressing), this time marching down the groove of Philly street; the results are inventive yet soothing. From the simplistic imagery of "Love Conquers All" (the first single), to the magical motion of the instrumental "Satori", the production remains extremely tight, locking in the flavor of the recording without tarnishing its craftsmanship. Although primarily more mature than any of the duo's previous work, "Abra.." doesn't always hold back the intrinsic frustration of one Martin Fry. "I was a victim, but nobody's fool!" he boasts on "Welcome to the Real World", one of ABC's greatest album tracks in their recording history. "Say it", mixed by the short-lived dance act Blackbox ("Everybody Everybody"), springs forth a classic ABC moment, reminiscent of "Be near me" from the 'Zillionaire period. The bonus remix, however, is quite unnecessary despite the packaging of LPs during the early 1990s.
Calling "Abracadabra' a classic perhaps would be an overstatement. However, unlike "Lexicon", "'Zillionaire", or "Up", "Abra.." has withstood the test of time, remaining as fresh and contemporary as when it was first released. As other ABC albums become more available with Master Releases and compilations galore, "Abra.." is the gem of their diversive yet intriguing catalog. Available at most online auction sites, grab while you can!
Another gem from ABC.......2004-03-16
Abracadabra, the final ABC album pairing vocalist Martin Fry and multi-instrumentalist Mark White, is by far the band's most underrated album, and a worthy addition to its catalogue, far better than the overrated Alphabet City. It's a satisfying mix of mellow house vibes and Philly soul, from the haunting "Spellbound" to the hip "Welcome to the Real World." There are some filler tracks, and its riches are subtle, which led to its commercial and critical disappointment. But if you've discovered the treasure that is ABC, you'll want to add this gem to your collection.
