4 out of 5 stars Jones Steps Up To The Plate.......2007-05-15

I will be honest from the get go and tell you that I am a huge Dipset fan, but that bias aside, I definitely think this is one of the best rap cd's of 2006. Jones gives a suprisingly mature effort on P.O.M.E., and touches on many subjects he has never covered on previous songs. Highlights include the intensely paranoid cut "Emotionless" where both Jones and Santana spit memorable verses. Other standout tracks are "Reppin Time", "Bright Lights, Big City", "So Harlem", "Weatherman", "Pour Wax", and of course the smash hit "We Fly High" (BALLLIN!!). Overall, Jones has created a very strong and solid effort, which he should be extremely proud of.

NOTE: I am actually 16 years old, I just don't want my own Amazon username.

SCENE: Record producer's office.

RECORD PRODUCER: Mr. Jones, we've been expecting you. Sit down.
JIM JONES: Alrighty then, what's this all about?
RECORD PRODUCER: Okay, your last album, "Hustler's P.O.M.E. (Product Of My Environment)" was recently certified 10x Bronze by the RIAA. Over ten million copies were returned.
JIM JONES: But dat album didn't sell ten million copies, which means...Oh man.
RECORD PRODUCER: It doesn't matter anyway, because rap is no longer a fad. It has been killed by the most recent genre, jazz rock, which actually requires talent, so you're out of here.

SCENE: One of New York City's McDonalds. Jim Jones is now an employee.

50 CENT: Wuzzup homie! Welcome to the life of fast food.
JIM JONES: Look Fiddy, how did I end up working at McDonalds? The record producer said something about jazz rock and something called TALENT being popular now, so what's going on, dawg?
50 CENT: Simple. When this new genre, jazz rock, became a fad, everyone was impressed, as it was so unique, talented, and fresh, so in a couple of days, the ENTIRE mainstream beforehand - pop, rap, R&B, emo, and radio-rock - was killed. Now dose hataz at da record company won't hire anybody that would be part of those genres.
JIM JONES: So I gotta be parta dose new genres. Sweet - whoops, I forgot, I have no talent.
50 CENT: Nor do I, which is why we'z at Mickey D's. Alright, you (Jim Jones) - change the fries. I gotta help Snoop Dogg wit da grill and Jay-Z wit da drive thru.
JIM JONES: Dis sucks!!

Unfortunately, this probably won't ever happen. Judging on how long this garbage has been popular and the fact that everyone's IQ's are lower than their shoe sizes, this garbage will continue to sell. This sucks.

PS, I know I sound alot like Eggplant, but all of this is true.

2 out of 5 stars As The Trend Continues (Rating: 4 out of 10- -2 stars).......2007-02-16

After the Jim Jones release of "Hustler's P.O.M.E. (Product Of My Environment), and a waste of my time listening to it (as well as his Christmas album), I vowed to never buy another Dip Set related album again. Usually I listen to an album atleast twice, before I type a review, but I couldn't even make it past the first few tracks on my second listen. This album I find Jim Jones to be very generic in his rhymes, even when he bites. If you check my reviews, you'll see that I've been very generous in my ratings on Dip Set related albums (even Cam'ron's "Killa Season"), but this is a joke to me. The Dip Set guests on this album are straight garbage, as usual, such as Max B. But what was I expecting from here, some kind of lyrical skills to blow my mind? Don't expect to find them here.

If anything I found positive was the overplayed first single "We Fly High". You know the situation where you hear a song so many times, you begin to like it out of the blue. That might explain how I liked the first single on this album. Everything else is straight garbage.

So there we have it. Another wasteful Dip Set release. Only people who say they that this album is good are either from New York, or were born somewhere in the early 90's. Point blank, I recommend that you stay away from this overpriced drink coaster, plain and simple. Jim Jones saw how his first two albums flopped, and decided to go the gimmic route, which explains how his first single blew up. If Cam'ron's "Killa Season" was the worst from Dip Set in '06, "Hustler's P.O.M.E." sure as hell gave it a run for it's money.

The best description of Noreaga is supplied by the man himself: "I ain't never going to be a crazy lyricist... but I know how to make gangsta music." Indeed, this prodigal son from Queens' Lefrak Housing Projects has emerged as a thug supreme, his oft-barked "What what!" the prelude to verbal violence that manifests itself so often in his songs. On this, his second solo album, Noreaga supplies more of the same thugged-out entertainment he did on N.O.R.E.: gruff rhymes about street life and hustling laid over the shiny studio tracks of gangsta pop's current cadre of producers, including the Neptunes, Trackmasterz, EZ-Elpee, and Swizz Beats. As he admits in his confession above, Noreaga isn't about to smash new ground, but he is very good at what he does. Unlike the throngs of wannabes, he doesn't have to front too hard to convince you of his tough-bred attitude--real or not, he's mastered a sort of psychotic sincerity that comes through on "Wethuggedout," "What the F*ck Is Up?", and the surprisingly personal "Sometimes." --Oliver Wang

I don't know why record companies put up with this foolishness. This cat cannot rap. The song "Cocaine Business" featuring Kelis is the only track I care for and only because Kelis' hook is the best part in the song. N.O.R.E. raps like I play basketball...and I can't even dribble.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 star 2nd solo album.......2004-12-23

Noreaga is back a year after his solo debut to bring another strong performance. Slighly less quality than "N.O.R.E." but much better than his "God's Favorite". If you know Nore than you get what you expect on this one, Gangsta tales with a few deep songs. the album starts off great, much like his first album did but dwindles in the middle. Guests are few and mostly members of his crew. Production is handled by alot of people, most notably: Neptunes (2), Swizz Beats (1), EZ Elpee (2), SPK (6 songs), Manny Fresh (1), and a few others. It has 2 songs I skip, 3 that are ok, 2 classics and the rest are solid. A must have rap album.

This CD is the bomb!! In th '70s I owned the LP and people kept stealing it from me. If you want to hear true urban poetry The Hustlers Convention is for you.

The story is both real in it's message and vivid in the descriptions by Mr. Lightin Rod. Additionally, the underlying soundtrack is subtle but very hip.

If you want something different buy this CD NOW!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Break was so loud, it hushed the Crowd.......2007-01-25

Classic album featuring Kool & The Gang! There was a number of other surprise appearances on here as well. Great imagery through the spoken word story telling delievered as smooth as any playa' could hope for. A must for funk, hip hop, and rap entusiasts!

5 out of 5 stars One of the GREATEST recordings of all time ! ! ! .......2005-08-25

Shame on our culture for at one time letting this album become rare and out of print... and hands up for it going back in print.

Part blaxploitation on vinyl part Jazzoetry, this recording features some incredibly funky and jazzed out backing music by none other than KOOL AND THE GANG as Lighnin' Rod (a former Last Poet's member) tells his Iceberg Slim style tale of getting over.

A CONCEPT ALBUM taken to ridiculous extremes, Hustlers' Convention is the album that influenced not only the evolution of rap, but document the now almost lost art of Street Poetry...

Fans of Gil Scott Heron, Rudy Ray Moore and the Last Poets will wet their pants within moments of the opening track... and so too will fans of funk and '70s soul... Even I know half the lyrics by heart (however, trust me, you won't hear me making a schmuck out of myself trying to recite it in public...)

Tight production, tight rhymes, tight music and a tight tale... never before was a recording like this made and never will it be made again ! ! ! This is performance, art, poetry, story telling, Jazz, funk and a tale with a moral taken to extremes...

A timeless tale of pimpin' that will never be out topped !

(P.S. Anybody remember who did that avant garde big band recording of Honkytonk Bud in the early '80s... ???)

    5 out of 5 stars A Superbly Exuberant Album.......2005-03-02

I first read about "Hustler's Convention" nearly 20 years ago in Greil Marcus's book "Mystery Train." I finally received a copy through Amazon.com this week: it was worth the wait, but by the same token, why didn't I buy it sooner?! Having read Marcus's synopsis of the album, I knew what to expect in terms of its bleak story line and its connection to the Blaxploitation culture of the early 70s. I was unprepared, however, for the exhuberance of Lightnin' Rod's performance, as well as the tunefulness of Kool & the Gang's musical accompniment.

This is a classic album, and why it has not achieved the fame of contemporaries such as Sly and the Family Stone's "There's a Riot Goin' On," Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions," the O'Jays' "Back Stabbers," or Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack to "Superfly" is a mystery: it is every bit as good as these more celebrated albums, and it is distinct from all of them.

In terms of contemporary Black culture, "Hustler's Convention" is prophetic. It is a crucial link in the historical development of hip-hop culture, and many of the most compelling themes and techniques of rap music are presented here with astonishing force and clarity. The model for Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Prince Paul, the Roots, Talib Kweli, and even Chris Rock is to be found on this record, which builds a bridge between the music of the past twenty years and the glorious tradition of George Clinton, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, and the great concept albums of late 60s rock music.

Anyone interested in African-American music of the last 30 years should seek this album out; I hope as well that a decent record label (Rhino Records: hello?!) will reissue this album and finally give it the distribution and visibility it deserves.

And all this is just my first impression, having heard the album once! I can't wait to play it again!!!

5 out of 5 stars A moralistic blaxploitation film on record.......2003-02-27

This is a GREAT CD! I enjoy listening to just about every genre of music and this CD would be in my top favorites of any style. Lightnin' Rod, AKA Jalal Nuriddin, AKA Alafia Purdim, was a charter member of the Last Poets. This CD can be seen as proto-rap for its attention to street lingo and engagement with the ghetto underworld. Of course, all slang by nature changes rapidly, so some may find the rhyming corny. The first line of the album DOES start out with the single most notorius rhyme cliche: "moon - June", but the complete package of non-sampled music, toasting and interesting storyline makes for an irrestible listen. The story seems quaint compared to the much more violent 'modern' rap albums. If it's quaint, though, it's infinitately more believable, realistic and therefore more involving than the fantasy-based gangsta rap. I can't wait to see how well a lot of 'modern' rap ages when listened to 20 years from now; betcha nowhere near as well as this album does. Hustler's Convention features boasting raps over the cool beats of Eric Gale and Kool & the Gang. If it's actually in print when you read this, you'd be crazy not to pick up a copy.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-07-17

I was a bit scared to listen at first because i loved the last record so much. The Hustler, though, is Jeff's finest work to date. I didnt think he could top himself, but he has. It almost sounds like a completely different artist but with Jeff's voice. The title track is haunting me everytime. And Pity is a refreshing new direction.

5 out of 5 stars You know it's fantastical when.......2005-07-16

I take the time to say it is! I don't review anything.. too lazy.. but THIS is really fantastic. Runs the entire spectrum of emotion & skill... something special is here. SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL.

5 out of 5 stars Best of 2005.......2005-07-13

One of 2005's Best albums. An essential listen that brings to mind Ryan Adams, Jeff Tweedy and the lush production of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

2 out of 5 stars This album is a mess.......2006-07-15

It was as if someone took every song they could find that Cormega is featured on, chopped off his verses, and made it a track on this CD. I'm not sure if Cormega even had anything to do with this album. I hope not.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrically one of the best, Classic!.......2006-04-30

This is unrealsed material from Cormega. I've had this CD for a while, and it really delivers. Ever since I picked up this CD, it has been considered one of my all time favorites. I think he is the best lyricist period. I know a lot of people will agree with me on that one. If you were to only have one CD from Cormega, this would be the one to have. I can't believe this CD is only going for $5.95 on Amazon. I can't find this CD anywhere anymore. I would pay atleast $25 dollars to have this CD, if I already didn't own it. Also pick up the 50 cent mixtape "Guess Who's Back?" that has a similar looking cover, if you enjoyed this title.

    5 out of 5 stars A.K.A. Greatest Hits/Cormega Mixtape.......2006-04-08

This is a Great CD because it has greats songs made and featured in,and has some memorable freestyles.I would recommend you to add this to your collection, if your a fan of cormega.I would give it 4 1/2 but deserves the 5.Cop this quick, seriously.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 star "Mixtape" like album.......2005-02-24

8 months after he dropped "The Realness" Mega released this mixtape-like album. With 28 "Songs" you get a lot of Cormega. Most of the songs are off of old Mobb Deep, Nas, Foxy Brown, Screwball, 41st Side, QB Finest, and unrelased Cormega albums and a good deal of them only take Cormega's verse and cut out the other rappers (with the exception of the Mobb Deep Songs). It does have some rare freestyles (1 w/ Big Pun, 1 w/ Busta Rhymes, and 1 with Prodigy & Nature) and songs such as:
Crime Side, Mega Hold His Own (f/ Carl Thomas), All I Need Is You (f/ Joelle), Who Can I Trust (f/ LiL Wayne), La Familia (f/ Firm), Affirmative Action Remix (f/ Firm), Usual Suspects (f/ DMX, Ja Rule, Mic Geronimo, and Hussein Fatal of the Outlawz) and 2 Freestyles where he gets on Nas hard - the classic Realmatic & Poetry.
A must have album for any fan of real hip-hop and QB rap.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2003-12-22

This album is a classic. Not only did Cormega bring the realness, but he shows us why he wasn't with the firm and how much of a punk Nas is. Cormega speeks the truth in this album. Well put together and a must have for any rap fan.

5 out of 5 stars afro made christmas songs into classics with this.......2004-12-23

First i would like to say that every song ive ever heard from afroman is seriously amazing. I swear this is exactly what hip hop and the rap game needs. His lyrics and flow are really good, his beats are soo tight. He has his own unique style thats irresistable. Everyone should pick up a copy of this cd and all of his others.Afroman is down to earth and talks about real stuff and also loves talking about having a good time with his homies smoking weed and getting drunk. He is really funny too. He's not all about smoking weed and he dosnt talk about it to be cool. Just have an openmind and please listen, just because he isnt a mainstream rapper like 50 cent dosnt mean he isnt good. Everytime i listen to one of his cd's it automatically puts me in a good mood. I reccommend to get all of cds, you will NOT be dissapointed. Albums: 1.Sell your dope 2.The Good Times 3.Afroholic - The even better times 4.4ro:20
He also has a new cd with his group :The Hungry Hustlers - Starvation is Motivation. And he has a christmas album Afroman - Jobells which is really funny

    5 out of 5 stars A Colt 45 Christmas Indeed!.......2007-01-19

Afroman stays true to form while making parodies of christmas songs. Definately give me the christmas spirit. My faves are "Police Blow My Wad", and "Let Her Blow". I recommend this cd to any Afroman fan, or anyone looking for a funny christmas cd.

5 out of 5 stars Dis 1 Fro Da Holidays!.......2006-11-20

Afroman is just an amazing artist. And this is HIS take on xmas. Its nice 2 hear a rapper focus more on having fun instead of being so serious all the time.

1 out of 5 stars Trajic for the holidays.......2006-11-16

What is this garbage? Don't get me wrong, I am all for humerous christmas releases... and some of them have been pretty funny. This I find hardly amuzing and it makes the novelty of parody seem to wear thin. Condoning violence, drug use, and other wayward activities all wrapped under christmas packaging is hardly "festive" and nothing can hide the fact that this is simply put: trash.
    Skip it.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Afrofans.......2006-11-13

Great CD for all of the afroman fans out there, its great comedy, with parodies from all sorts of christmas songs, i would definately recommend it for a christmas gift to any afroman fans or anyone who likes parody.
