A new exploration, a new frontier in Pierre Bensusan's music. I don't think describing his music does justice to it, no doubt he tops the list of talented musicians, but just listen to him and you'll be inspired by his awsome voice and guitar

I think this is one of PB's weakest albums, but obviously other reviewers don't agree with me (and the fact that 2 of my favorites, Epices and Wu Wei, are out of print indicates that I do not hold a mainstream opinion). Forget likening PB's music to "impressionism" as some have done recently in print -- the clarity, immediacy, range, and pure soul in his music far transcend impressionism. If we're going to pick an analogous art movement, try Luminism! One more plug: see this man in concert if you can. He and his tiny band (including the marvelous Didier Malherbe on woodwinds) played many years ago in an old church in Knoxville TN and jazzed every atom of dust off the rafters.

I listen again and again for years but it still sounds beautiful and calming.
If you love guiter, more like classical, you will love this.

Pure perfection! It simply is, one of the greatest finger-style, guitar albums ever.

You cant go wrong, and it cant be matched in chops, writing and passion.

Bensusan, is considered one of the greatest guitarists in the world so you will get an earfull of great acoustic guitar picking....he also vocalizes over some tunes occassionally (80% instrumental 20% w/vocals), typically folksy lament in French or pure abstract scatisms....now imagine a Frenchman scatting over solo guitar with a celtic flavor, at the highest degree of beauty and technique.......

Considered a leader in Celtic interpretations as well, playing exclusively in the DADGAD tuning...

Pierre Bensusan takes a place among history's guitar icons........1998-08-31

I own every album this guy has recorded. His music was a regular addition to the morning folk/jazz/new acoustic program I used to DJ in Salt Lake City, and I would encourage everyone to experience his brilliance.

As a guitarist, I am in awe of Pierre's dynamic phrasing and approach to the instrument; his original and very personal technique is as important to the guitar universe as any player in this century. As a listener, I'm struck by the richness of Pierre's compositions, each containing traces of that French-thing (Je ne sais quoi?), his North African heritage, as well as jazz, tango and more ancient music forms. The vocals on his numerous albums are powerful and haunting.

This guy is a wizard with the guitar and puts on one of the best performances I've ever seen. It's like there's no boundary between the man and the instrument. Check out this album and my other all-time favorites, Solilai and Pierre Bensusan 2.

Pianist Aldo Ciccolini garnered lots of attention in the late 1960s and early 1970s when he recorded all of Erik Satie's original piano music for EMI. The cycle remains first choice for Satie fans, who certainly will welcome its first complete (as opposed to excerpted) reissue on CD. Ciccolini's interpretations are paradigms of expressive economy and directness, and happily eschew the "let's see how slow and important I can make these works" attitude that sometimes prevails among younger Satie practitioners. Ciccolini's diamond-edged sonority, sparkling technique, and willingness to accept the composer's high quirk quotient at face value further enhance these performances. While Ciccolini admirably overdubs himself in the piano duet works, one misses the added color and ensemble give and take gained from Ciccolini's digital remakes partnered by Gabriel Tacchino. For the price, though, Satie fans can hardly go wrong. Don't let EMI's French-only annotations prevent you from acquiring this classic cycle. Get it while you can. --Jed Distler

The Simple, the Sublime, and the Surreal.......2007-03-27

This collection makes for good listening. There is a great deal of variety and character (Oh, is there character!) to be found in the various pieces. While most people have likely heard one or more of Satie's Gymnopedies at the very least in the background music of a TV ad, this collection pulls together the rarely-heard piano pieces as well. One that I had been seeking, Vexations, is a short piece to be repeated 840 times.

The titles of the pieces bear witness to Satie's sense of humor, rebellion against conventions of the day, and his pleasure in the surreal. Translations help to enjoy the unusual titles (who could not love "Piece in the Form of a Pear"?), some of which are reminiscent of Magritte's monikers.

Aldo Ciccolini's performances are clear, with definite respect for the composer's works. There was a noticeable distinction between the tempi of the works that come "in threes", such as the Gymnopedies.

I found that this collection fit nicely on my iPod, allowing me to take it on the road and enjoy it wherever the mood struck me. In some cases, the juxtaposition of Satie's music with my whereabouts provided yet another dimension of surreal-ity that had to be savored. The fact that most of these piano pieces are brief lends them to shuffling with other styles.

While this collection is not for the casual listener to classical music, it does allow you to come into closer contact with one of the more unconventional minds of classical music. If you are serious about late 19th- or early 20th-century music, especially French music, or the influence of popular music on serious music, then this is not only for you, but a bargain as well.

Great complete set.......2004-11-21

This is the definitive Satie collection for piano. Well-recorded and well played. I am a fan of French Impressionism in all of its incarnations and appreciated getting a full set of Satie under one cover. However, not all of these interpretations are my favorites. The best Gnossienne, IMHO, is that of Reinbert de Leeuw. He takes it slow and draws everything out of that piece. Ciccolini's interpretation is rushed and not as melodic. However, the Ciccolini tempo works well on other pieces, such as the other Satie favorite, Gymnopédies.

All in all, this collection is well worth having for any Satie fan.

the BEST.......2003-04-21

Satie is a weirdo. Often overlooked by serious classical enthusiasts for a variety of reasons, he was an eccentric person and a very original composer. His quirky, playful temperament gave his pieces the intrigue they still hold today.

Aldo Ciccolini is the perfect pianist for these pieces. He seems to be the quintessential Satie interpreter. His playing is dazzling, crisp, and delightful. Aldo has a real knack for these sorts of french artists, and really seems to understand their style.

Unlike many other pianists, he does not try to over-romanticize these works. He plays them appropriately - briskly, and brimming with energy. Even on such lulling pieces as the Gnossienes and Gymnopedies he plays with an essential awareness. His confidence is winning, and his understanding of the pieces makes them shine and scintillate. And at such a generous price, how can you go wrong? This is well worth it.

La Ketanou stands for "La rue qui est à nous", as I have been told during a recent stay of 2 years in France, which means Our street, or Our patch. From such a humble name come these scintillating sounds, starting from gypsy-like energy enhanced with arabic and celtic influences. They are not alone in this, in France one can find many groups who carry this stamp right now, if one is in the right places. Great exuberance, great fun and as the words are all included, a good way to learn French - wouldn't it be a pity if the crazy meanings of the songs went unnoticed?

chansons de vie.......2003-07-16

La Rue Ketanu recently performed at Festivale de L'Ete in Quebec City, where they entranced and thrilled an audience of several hundred fans. I was impressed enough to buy a CD, and I am not disappointed with its quality. The three young men who make up Rue Ketanu vibrate with intensity and the joy of making modern music from the roots of the French Chanson, using guitars, accordion, percussion, and multiple vocals. Their lyrics and song forms (all very French) attest to the tenacity and humor of the French culture and its place in the world. I've been a fan of Les Negresses Vertes (a now defunct French gypsy big band) and am glad to find Rue Ketanu closely resembling LNV's energy and bouncing rhythms. Their CD is well produced, beautifully packaged with amusing artwork, and is consistently enjoyable from the first track to the last.

amazing live experience.......2006-09-17

i picked this little guy up in Paris after hearing about the band from my girlfriends friend from France....and i've got to say. This CD set is an incredible mix of french reggae/ska. It doesn't matter if you can't understand the words, because the beats and melodies are so catchy you'll find yourself singing some weird concoction of fake french at the top of your lungs along with them. I'd reccommend this live set to anyone interested in expanding their palette of musical taste. It's a real find...seriously!

I bought this CD while I was studying in France, its amazing. They talk about anything from religious issues to partying to political issues. I played it for friends who don't speak French and even they found that the beat and the ever changing style was interesting and entertaining.
It sure beats the pants off Johnny Halliday.

In a time of jingoistic ballads and processed muic, Tryo's fun, uplifiting beats and funky sound is a welcome addition to any (liberals) music collection. If you understand French and you are liberal you will love the biting criticism of the Bush administration. Ciccolini Knows Satie.......2004-06-02

Aldo Ciccolini is arguably the greatest interpreter of Erik Satie, and he can also be credited with rescuing the minimalist from certain obscurity with the recordings he made of the composer's music in the late 1960s and early 1970s. For years I have enjoyed selections of those performances and I figured it was time to upgrade to a more complete set. As a result, I recently got this title. Unfortunately, this 5CD box set from EMI Classics collects Ciccolini's digital remakes of Satie's Piano Works, and not the original recordings of which I had grown so fond. (I have since discovered that a French Import of the complete original recordings is available.) The overall difference is minimal (yes, pun intended!) but I have to give the nod to the analog performances because of a slightly warmer, brighter sound. Also with a first time recording, there is an intangible element in the charting of new territory that I feel is never quite recaptured when revisited. With that being said, for the pieces requiring two pianists, the digital accounts are superior. While Ciccolini overdubbed himself originally, here he partners with Gabriel Tacchino to greater effect. In all, this is an excellent set by an unparalled master of Satie's music, but if I had to it over again I would have chosen the first incarnation.

Honneger's Sparkling - & Racy - Operetta on disc at last!.......2004-03-12

"The Adventures of King Pausole" (1929-30) was Swiss composer Arthur Honneger's first (& very successful) venture into the tempting waters of commercial operetta, & this fine world premiere recording (dating from 1992) will delight those who enjoy the "classical tradition" of French light opera. (Susan Graham has recently included one number from it on her excellent "French Operetta Arias" CD on Erato.) Musically, its catchy and sophisticated score pays homage first & foremost to Offenbach and Chabrier, altho' Honegger finds plenty of room for more "modern" sounds. The music sparkles in the fast numbers, & grows properly wistful in the slower ones.
Albert Willemetz's text - based on a novel by Pierre Louys (of Debussy's "Chansons de Bilitis") - however goes where none of Honegger's distinguished 19th century century predecessors would have dared to tread! The fantasy kingdom where the title character has 365 wives, one for each night of the year, might just barely have been acceptable. Not so a trio in which the innocent young heroine does a bit of "comparison shopping," - kiss-wise - between two suitors, one a lesbian prima ballerina in male clothing, the other a randy male page dressed (for the moment) as a milkmaid... & all set to the most literally ravishing music in the score. If the piece never - well, hardly ever - threatens to topple over into tastelessness, it's due in part to the satirical verve of the text & above all to the high spirits & inventiveness of the score.
This is by & large a fine performance, & everyone seems to be enjoying rediscovering the piece. The dialogue has been trimmed, altho' there's still a lot of it; the score is given complete. The cast is wisely anchored in the work of 2 savvy veterans, baritone Gabriel Bacquier & tenor Michel Senechal. The rest are without real weakness & Rachel Yakar is outstandingly stylish, in both song & speech, as Diane (she sings the number Graham recorded, a bluesy aria of frustration about getting to sleep with her husband only once a year...). Chorus (the Basle Madrigalistes) & orchestra (Atelier Philharmonique Suisse) do just fine under Mario Venzago. Full libretto in French only, notes & number-by-number synopsis in French, English, German & Italian. Recommended.
