    Album Description

The future sound of Little Havana, Miami, usa.

This full-length CD of live digital recordings from the notorious weekly at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, Miami ('iFuacata!' translates loosely as Pow! or Wham!) documents the spam allstars' modern, Pan-American dance music. Seemlessly fusing funk, Miami bass, hip hop, dub, free jazz, descarga, guaguanco, and Afro-beat, " . . . an original concept in nightlife, a new Miami sound that has been described as a 'de-emphasis of the obvious', a 'controlled dissonance' and even a 'deconstructed rumba' . . ." (New York Times). Original eight-panel artwork by Lebo.

5 out of 5 stars Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries..........2005-09-27

Aye, c*no...esto es verdad. This is the sho-nuff greasy dripping stuff. I mean it's for real, ya dig? Ain't no mistake about it...plus, anybody, and I mean anybody who uses samples from the comedy of Alvarez Guedes is already doing something right. But, truth be known, I've been catching these guys live at their Fuacta show at Hoy Como Ayer for longer than I care to admit. Then came Jazid shows, I/O shows, other misc. shows, what have you. Bottom line, if they are playing in Miami, I'm there. Even been up to NYC and caught them there.

But you got it all here. You got the funky salsa soul of Azuquita a la "Pura Salsa" (check out "Guarjio Bacan" and tell me I'm lyin'). You got the groove of Joe Bataan before he committed blasphemy with disco-horror. You got the dripping grease of Willie Bobo, funkiness of Lebron Brothers, Patato, Candido, Tito Puente in his (Pa'lante Straight days), etc. Brothers/sisters you got more here than I can even say. Then you got some good ol' as* bumpin' Miami Bass and groove. It don't get no better nowheres.

Finally, brother John...gotta say this. Those of you see that review down below by John Speck? Well cats/kittens, know this...he be the 'bone player for this outfit. So, that let's you know where he might be coming from. Also does a thing or two with his own outfit called Bacon Bits, but he's a dam* fine member of this group and an equally fine 'bone player. But, just wanted to let it be known since he didn't see fit to disclose it himself.

Get this now...plus, if you hadn't already known, you'll get introduced to the MAGNIFICENT artwork of LEBO...also present on the Vida Blue release which these boys joined in on. Check out LEBO's work elsewhere (like his website for instance) and tell me you won't get addicted.

    Enjoy.

This is one of my all-time favorite CD's. You can't help but move. I've slipped this on at parties and watched people as they start to dance without even being aware of it. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Nice and Funky.......2004-04-26

I bought this CD and became a fan of spam allstars. Since then I've tried to go to all their shows and they were all amazing. This album is impossible not to pop to! Great original sounds. For anyone who likes funk and/or latin will enjoy this a lot. Theire new album is coming out on 5/7/04 by the way and it should pretty awesome, so keep an eye out for it!

5 out of 5 stars funky cuban salsa lounge music.......2004-01-27

This disc will not only enhance whatever groove your in tenfold, but it will culturally edify your cuban american spanish palate (i.e. teaching you to say s@#t-eater in Spanish, demonstrate the vibe of "la sowesera" or the "southwest part" of Miami on a hot afternoon at the dominoe park.)

AND it has the BASS to back it all up and drop the B-Boys popping and locking, doing aerials, and all kindsa ferked up gymnastic sheet.

    Yeah.

Oh. and did I mention that I've seen them tickle the Baby Boomers, whether during a mellow evening and a glass of wine, or a quick and frisky foxtrot. It can all be done to the Cuban Funky Spam Jam, man.

    True that!

4 out of 5 stars Gringos can jump!.......2003-02-23

I am humbled by Greg C's view of Tjader and can expain why this along with about 40 others by CT are a must. This guy was never seen by his peers as a gringo, he WAS "simpatico." He could hold his own with being the vibist with George Shearing, playing percussion with Dave Brubeck or letting it all hand out with Eddie Palmieri. He was discounted by too many critics of jazz because he saw a jazz classic in a McCartney/Lennon tune as much as a Gershwin piece. He was able to make more albums than just about anybody short of Miles,Dizzy or Oscar Peterson. I know it went into the hundreds! This LP is only refined by its inherent digital longevity. Hope my great, great, great grandchildren love it as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Double Dose Of Tjader Tjuice.......2001-10-05

EXCELLENT! These two killer early 70s Tjader efforts (1971's "Agua Dulce" and 1972's "Live At The Funky Corners") can now be had together on one little shiny disc, which will save you shelling out $30-$40 for either of the original vinyl issues. This music demands nothing of you but to feel good and feel free, to either dance or contemplate a starry sky on a summer night. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how much melody Tjader wrings out of the Stones' "Gimme Shelter," and if "Morning" doesn't fill you with an immense sense of serenity and well-being, you're obviously in need of extensive therapy. It's a shame that music this good should exist beneath the radar of mass public exposure and familiarity, especially since Tjader's sweet, sweet sound enhanced many lives in its day. Don't even hesitate--get this right away, and disregard those jazz pundits who can't accept this wonderful music for the antidote-to-a-world-gone-insane that it is. Just pop it in the tray, hit "play" and immediately feel much sexier!

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Cuban Music.......2002-09-27

Who got me in love with Cuban music, both the folk and jazz varieties, is another Cuban group that bears the very patriotic name of "Cuarteto Patria". Since then, I have become accustomed to Jane Bunnet's beautiful albums, the "Buena Vista Social Club", and they all made me listen much more attentively to the Central and South American folk music. This album contains a string of songs so alive that you cannot sit down while listening to it. To me, it is amazing how so much good music can come out of such a small island. To the connoisseurs, this album is a confirmation, while for the newcomers it will be an eye opener.

    5 out of 5 stars great intro.......2001-06-21

This is a perfect way to get acquainted with the Afro-Cuban jazz phenomenon. This CD represents a compelling combo of artists from different time periods.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yet.......2006-07-31

I think "Descarga en California" is Rebeca's best solo effort to date. It's awesome! I have all of her CDs, but this one stays in my CD player on a regular basis since it was released. To be honest I'm not usually much of a Latin jazz fan, although I am drawn to her music. I'm much more of a timba fan day to day. However, the compositions and the quality of the musical work on "Descarga..." is one of the bests I've ever heard. I especially like the drums and timbales on "Suena tu timbal", Serenata rítmica", and "Califas".

To bad I couldn't make it to Yoshi's for the release performance. It was just a bit far from northern VA. I hope she keeps up the great work. I can hardly wait for the next CD.

Known in Latin-jazz circles for his virtuoso flute playing, Orlando "Maraca" Valle has produced a party album that follows the time-tested formula for the best Cuban music: masterful musicianship and an infectious good-time spirit that will keep dancers moving from the first track to the last. Like Olympic athletes, the members of Maraca's group and his guest artists execute their expert moves with apparent ease, delivering a "total jam session" that segues smoothly from classic son, danzón, and mambo to Latin jazz, Afro-Cuban chanting, rumba, rap, and the hard-driving Cuban dance fusion called timba. Notable soloists include groundbreaking Cuban funk percussionist Changuito, formerly of Los Van Van. Singer Félix Valdés recalls the improvisational vocal stylings of the Cuban soneros of the Big Band era, contrasting with grittier salsa tracks sung by Wilfredo Campa. Maraca and his band follow in the footsteps of Cachao's Master Sessions and the seminal output of Chucho Valdés and Irakere, with whom the prodigious Maraca began his career at the age of 16. Like the recordings of those Cuban greats, Descarga Total celebrates the sheer joy of good music. --Judy Cantor

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2002-05-23

This is by far the most amazig CD that I own. Its jam packed with sensuous sounds, honoring traditional Cuban rythms with a modern twist. This is like no other CD I have heard in the last couple of years, by far these musicians are extremely talented and their sounds are very superior to those from other Carribbean islands. The energy and passion is sure to blow off your speakers. If you don't own this CD, you're really missing out! It will keep you dancing all night long!

5 out of 5 stars This is one GREAT CD! Masterly Cuban Latin Jazz........2001-06-20

"Descarga Total" (it means "Jam Session") is the latest release from leader and flautist Maraca and his band. All excellent musicians (this is Cuba were talking about, right!) they are leading exponents of Cuban Jazz which is a great concoction of Cuban rhythms allied to Jazz discipline and creativity.

The band has succeeded in producing a CD which mixes great compositions and high levels of musicianship. Maraca started his career with the very excellent Chucho Valdes and his band Irakere (check out some of their CDs most of which are outstanding) who, except for the US embargo against Cuba would be as huge in the US as they are in Europe. Anybody who has heard Irakere will know that they are a tough act to follow but in my opinion Maraca manages it. The sounds of the flute is entirely appropriate to the feel of the music and Maraca plays beautifully

There are many excellent cuts on this CD but the first "Descarga Total" and the second "Oye Guajira Mi Son" are particularly good. Congratulations to Maraca for writing all of the material to such a high standard. My feeling is that there is a lot more excellent music left to come out of this guy!

This band is now, in my opinion, the Latin Jazz outfit to watch, or more precisely, listen to and I will be following their progress with great interest.

    An unhesitating recommendation; buy this!

    4 out of 5 stars Blazing.......2001-05-02

For lover's of Cuban music and its derivations, particularly the big band varieties, I highly recommend this album. Right from the first song, 'Descarga Total', this recording is high energy, fast, danceable music. The second song 'Oye Guajira mi son' is PACKED with sabor -- done right, the way it should be! I'm also a big fan of the seventh song, Mambo con Chachacha with its loud trumpet and pumping rhythm. I had the good fortune of catching Orlando Valle playing at SOB's in New York and I was thrilled to hear them play BETTER live (and with only half their band) -- which is saying a lot considering how over-produced some albums are these days.

The description of the songs in the liner notes was also very helpful for me in distinguishing the different veins of development in Cuban music, as well as the various influences.

I've listened to lots of dance music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Congo, and the United States (NY, Miami and LA). Descarga Total is one of the BEST new albums I've heard in a while and I highly recommend it -- and if you can, go and see them play live!

    5 out of 5 stars Traditional forms + a twist of humor = a blast.......2001-02-27

What a refreshing disk this is! I was beginning to lose some of my enthusiasm for Cuban music because a few recent disks have seemed too blatantly commercial and over-marketed, a little too much geared to ride a wave of popularity. Here's a disk where everyone is just having a blast and enjoying the music. There is a fine combination of traditional sounds and rhythms and yet with a little, good-natured, satirical bent. For example, they nod and pay their respects to Perez Prado in the mambo-cha, but with a grin on their faces. Listen to the pizzicati strings, or to the way the piano suddenly barges in. This song and the superb opening track would make the album getting just by themselves. The rest of the tracks are fine, too. Excellent musicianship and ensemble playing, freshness and verve.

This celebration of Afro-Caribbean unity combusts with all the raucous excitement of improvisation modulated by a single, comprehensive performance vision. Covering an ambitious range--from traditional Puerto Rican Christmas folk music ("El Pitorrito") to troubadour ballads to a tropical version of a new and growing form out of Central and Latin America, rock en Español, ("Oye Mi Amor" and "Un Cachito")--Descaraga is clearly the creation of producer-general director Frank Ferrer. The 17-member orchestra (including a rotating cast of four male vocalists, each with his own, powerfully distinctive style) was founded by Ferrer in 1972 as Puerto Rico 2010. In 1993 the group took its current name and issued a two-CD set, Esta Si Va, followed by '96's Abrasate. Ferrer guides Descarga--and this album's lengthy guest musician list--with a firm hand that leaves just the right amount of room for little pockets of surprise, lending Somos Uno the intoxicating spirit of freedom that energizes the orchestra's two previous sets and conjures up images of late-night musical abandon. It's as if these merry music makers had been drawn together like filings to a magnet and lost all inhibitions in a gloriously free-wheeling after-hours jam. --Elena Oumano

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great mix, awesome musicians...songs were a little TOO pop.......2005-05-13

I own the other two Descarga Boricua releases (Descarga Boricua - Esta Si Va! and the sequel, Descarga Boricua - Abrazate a Puerto Rico). Both of those were double-CD sets, and were jam-packed with "musician's" salsa...innovative, salsa-dura...mixed in with jazz, afro-puertorican rhythms, and other unique additions. This one continues the tradition of experimentation, but was TOO short (43 minutes long only). In addition, the song selection is very poppish..of the 9 songs, 2 are reggae-mimicks (including one played by Mana). The salsa tunes are lacking in the intensity that made the first releases real good.

I'm giving it 4 stars because the musicians are truly the best Puerto Rico has to offer. If it weren't for that, I'd give this CD a 3 stars.

If you've never heard of any Descarga Boricuas releases, luckily for you, you don't have to purchase the entire series. A compilation package of 4 CDs called "Pa' Que Te Cuento" was released with dozens of the best songs produced by Frank Ferrer (the producer of the Descarga Boricua series).

Skip this CD, unless you want to really collect EVERYTHING Descarga Boricua made...go instead with the "Pa' Que Te Cuento" compilation package, or buy the two first double-cd sets of this group.
