Diehard salsa fans have grumbled about the artistic liberties taken by genre queen India on Soy Diferente, her first disc under the Univision label. Indeed, this is an adventurous, all-over-the-map outing, most notable for its incorporation of the red-hot reggaeton rhythms currently burning up radio playlists. Purists may scoff and call it a play for commercial viability, but Soy Diferente is still a strong showcase for India's emotive, urgent vocal work. She also co-wrote all of the album's tracks. Fans should also recall that India dabbled in jazz, hip-hop and English-language club music before--and after--hitting her stride as a salsa queen. The title track is featured in both a reggaeton version and as a "salsaton" shaker, which flows seamlessly between the two genres. "Cuando Hieres A Una Mujer" is a straight-ahead salsa track, buoyed by the appearance of reggaeton diva Ivy Queen. Salsa legend Tito Nieves offers tempting vocal licks during "No Es Lo Mismo;" and India's mother, Gloria Viera, pops up during the sweet-and-spicy "Madre e Hija aka Madre." And India is still at her sizzling best amid the blaring horns and sweltering percussion of salsa tracks "Un Amor Obsesivo," "Lagrimas" and "Tengo Que Dejarte Ir." Whatever the sound, India effortlessly proves that being Diferente is definitely a great thing. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars Soy Diferente .......2006-12-22

As a huge admire of India's work, I must say I feel this album. Although many critics might scoff and say it was a "nice attempt better luck next time", I will totally dissagree. I dont knw about many but I have witness India perform tracks of this album live at clubs and I feel them. I love drving down HOLLYWOOD BLVD and bombing this CD off the wall......I hope she might come out with a live CD so many witness the power and emotion India delivers on stage. * Solamente Una Noche, Una Amor Obsesivo, Lagrimas, y Tengo Que Dejarte Ir are beautiful......My still favorite album must still be SOLA....wow messages in every song!

5 out of 5 stars Not much to say, It's India.......2006-08-30

It's trend to have Regaeton but it's hard to dance with it if you are only salsa dancer.

But Salsaeton is helping you to follow the trend and it's easier to dance Salsa with.

I love this album.
It's a good piece.

5 out of 5 stars Salsaton?.......2006-08-24

I can't understand why people don't like the mix of reggaeton and salsa on this album. I am a big India fan and I love all of her albums whether they are the more traditional salsa style or salsaton or reggaeton or whatever. La India still has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard and I enjoy every single one of her songs.

5 out of 5 stars Bien Diferente.......2006-04-21

5 out of 5 stars My favorite purchase of 2005.......2006-01-01

I know this album came out a couple of years ago, but it is my favorite album of 2005. I buy probably 100 + albums per year, and this is my favorite del ano 2005. So very uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars This is meaty pop that deserves more than 5 stars........2004-08-18

I have to thank a good friend for turning me on to Diego Torres via 1999 "Tal Cual Es," and I could not believe that I had never heard of this guy as he quickly became one of my favorites. Like that release, "Un Mundo Diferente" earns 5 solid stars as it is the best of Latin pop, which combines great melody with poetry. Diego more than deserves a place on the table with the great Alejandro Sanz and Juan Luis Guerra as the best of the best.

This release came out in 2001, but I am only getting into it now as I was under whelmed when I first heard it and it went to the back of the pile. I don't know what the heck was wrong with me as this release may even be better than "Tal Cual Es," if that is possible, and I can't stop listening to it and just bought his "Unplugged" release from Amazon.com. It's hard to list highlights from this release as they are all great to me. "Color Esperanza" is a perfect example of what Diego does best, which is to turn on your mind and your body to give you a feeling that is uplifting and makes you glad to be alive no matter what you may be going through. His voice is beautiful and authentic and this release ups the ante and benefits from the Santanders (both G. and K.) with some merengue touches that further amplify an already great menu. "Quisiera" is a slow burner and is another favorite, as is "Si Tu Te Vas." I love the tango vibe on "Soy De La Gente," and I just wait until the salsa kicks in during the same song! A total treat for the ears.

Since I cannot gush so much about a release, as people may think that I am a record company executive, I have to find something that is not perfect... I am thinking.... Well there are a couple of songs towards the beginning of the release that are amazing, but it COULD be argueds that they may be a little overproduced and the choruses sound a bit cliched, but ultimately Diego and the music cannot be denied EVEN if one tries to deconstruct the points that I just highlighted to try and show some degree of objectivity. For those who are interested in packaging, the inserts are great with the non-stereotypical outdoor photography, and include all the lyrics

This guy is getting to be huge in Latin America and Europe, but has yet to reach a critical mass here in the United States. One listen to this CD and you may find yourself having a new favorite singer. Spanish speakers (native and non-native) will hear lyrics that are not your run boy meets girl songs, and those who don't speak Spanish will likely succumb to the rhythms (both slow and tropical) of a man who I hope continues to sell enough records to keep us entertained for many years to come. I am listening to this release right now for the third time today and decided that I needed to share the wealth as you guys have turned me on to some great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2004-07-11

One of the best albums I have ever heard...and I don't know a single word he is saying.

With a debut as smashing as their 1997 A Toda Cuba Le Gusta, the Afro Cuban All Stars would have to hit on all cylinders to not fall short on their sophomore effort. Alas, they don't hit the high marks that seemed so effortless on their debut, heading away from the earthy, complex body of emotions their horns carried and towards a style that reaches unabashedly for pop audiences. Of course, the pop audiences they address are old world enough to like their flute solos to be bombarded by big brass riffs and set off by crooning, sweet vocals. This brings up a key point: even a disappointing album by the likes of the Afro Cuban All Stars is better than most of what makes the airwaves, from Havana to Miami to Montreal. Aside from the more obviously polished elements, there are lots of traces of the band's debut, with the timeworn playing--especially on piano and percussion--sounding both overly commercial and terrifically organic. On many of these tunes, the cleanness of the sound draws the ear away from the music and towards the sonic varnish, the crystal clarity that in many cases would be cause for celebration. Here, it urges the side-by-side inspection of A Toda Cuba Le Gusta and Distinto, Diferente, the latter title signaling that the band has sought another terrain, maybe that commanded by Los Van Van prior to the rise of the Buena Vista Social Club and its roster of stars. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Muy bueno.......2007-06-12

Se mantiene el timbre del Son Cubano intacto pero en algunas de sus canciones la letra haciendo alegorias a la dichosa revolucion extravia un poco la excelente calidad del Disco.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and different .......2004-08-22

This is simply wonderful music. I consider the first Afro-Cuban All Star album, A Todo Cuba Le Gusta, to be one of my all time favorites. After the close of the first track on A Todo Cuba Le Gusta, I was asking myself, Where have you been all my life? I had no clue that I liked Cuban music but this is just amazing and it made me want more!

I don't feel quite that way about this album. It is a touch less fiery and a wee bit closer to mainstream tastes but believe me, there is nothing mainstream about it. The musicianship is fabulous despite the stylistic change. It is well worth buying and a great introduction to Cuban music.

If you are new to Cuban music and your tastes lean toward the metallic side of rock, you might enjoy the first album more. If you enjoy things a bit calmer than a frenzy but want still plenty of excitement, try this one!

5 out of 5 stars Muy caliente!.......2002-11-10

This music is absolutely addicting! Great to listen to while whipping up dinner or whatever else. However, DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS WHILE DRIVING! 5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......2005-02-15

Wow!That's all I could muster after listening to Batida Diferente. I felt as if I had been taken on a journey around Rio de Janeiro during the Golden Years of the Bossa Nova. It's hard to pick out the best track, especially since they are filled with special appearances from the most amazing Brazilian musicians. If you are true Bossa Nova fan , you must get this CD. Listen to it while it snows outside and I bet you'll forget about the winter .

5 out of 5 stars The real Bossa deal.......2004-12-17

This is a new CD featuring one of the greatest composers from the Bossa Nova movement. His songs were recorded by just about anybody connected to the genre. Maybe you don't know the titles but you will know the songs... The recording is impecable, the guests speak for themselves (just look at the list above - oh my!!)... Classy, smooth, cool, made in Rio, by the people that invented Bossa Nova. You can't get more genuine than this...

5 out of 5 stars 5-Star Bossa Nova beyond Jobim & Gilberto.......2004-11-21

Bossa Nova music was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro!

Rio de Janeiro is the cultural capital city of Brazil where such people like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto met and developed the most important Brazilian music style to gain international acknowledgement.

There is a big list of artists who has built Bossa Nova beyond Jobim and Gilberto. Some of which are well known to Americans and to the world. People like Deodato, Sergio Mendes, Leny Andrade, Marcos Valle, Joao Donato, Oscar Castro Neves, Luiz Eca & Tamba Trio who came along with Bossa Nova. People like Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Nana Caymmi, Dori Caymmi, and Caetano Veloso who came into the scene a little while after Bossa Nova though quite influenced by Bossa Nova.

Also there is a big list of artists who has built Bossa Nova but who are not known to Americans and to the world though they are legends of Bossa Nova in Brazil. People like Durval Ferreira, a jazzy instrumentalist when he plays his Bossa-stylished acoustic guitar while a tremendous melodist who was fated to write some of the dearest Bossa Nova standards. To name a few: A Chuva (The Day It Rained as it was recorded by Sarah Vaughan [1]), Tristeza de Nos Dois & Moca Flor (as recorded by Tamba 4/Tamba Trio [2]), Estamos Ai [3]& Batida Diferente as recorded by famous Leny Andrade, undoubtedly the biggest Ferreira's songs performer.

This CD pays for a long time debt of music industry to this great composer. It is a showcase of Durval Ferreira main output with fresh recordings from 2003 studio sessions with the best musicians in the place.

Most tracks in this CD are hip instrumental brilliant renditions of Mr. Ferreira's compositions. Also features vocal rendition of a new song by Leny Andrade, the great Lady of Bossa Nova. Sung in Portuguese.

Also showcases what one could imagine to be a live session in a music club in Rio de Janeiro. Refer to number #1 track "Estamos Ai" which was recorded by a 5-member group of the most talented saxophone soloists in Rio nowadays.

So there's no mistake. This CD is certainly a mandatory disc in a respectful Bossa Nova collection.

I invite you to come to Rio this summer and meet those incredible instrumentalists here and there showing their artistry in the music clubs. Durval Ferreira teams with them in the nightclubs, a perfect "carioca" (those who live in Rio are referred to as "cariocas"). Note: Summer in Rio de Janeiro begins December so that you can run away from cold and enjoy the tropical sun of Rio listening to the great Bossa Nova masters.

About Durval Ferreira @Amazon, also refer to my June 30, 2000 review to disc "Cannonball's Bossa Nova', a tremendous Bossa Nova tour-de-force with Sergio Mendes Bossa Rio Sextet. I wrote at that time: "It's madantory of a serious Bossa Nova collection. Also features Durval Ferreira on acoustic guitar; he's one of the most important Bossa Nova composers. Pay attention to his guitar phrases and basis. All stars."

[1] Refer to Sarah Vaughan's rendition of "The Day It Rained" with guitarrist Helio Delmiro, CD "I Love Brazil" - a Pablo Records title you also can find here @Amazon.

[2] Refer to Tamba 4's renditions of Tristeza de Nos Dois (CD "Samba Blim) and Moca Flor (CD "We and The Sea"). Both CDs on famous CTi Records. Note: Tamba 4 is famous Tamba Trio which has recorded with 1 more member in the CTi sessions. Tamba Trio member, Mr. Bebeto Castilho is featured in Durval Ferreira's CD.

[3] You can find CD 'Estamos Ai' by singer Leny Andrade here @Amazon. One of the most important albums of vocal Bossa Nova. Arrangements by Deodato. Musicians: all the best in the place 1965 Rio de Janeiro. The title song was a big instrumental hit. Ms. Andrade's rendition was the original one with lyrics plus a sensational scat singing which became historical and famous. A must-have album.

5 out of 5 stars El Penguinito (the little penguin) is at it again....!!!!.......2001-03-01

El Penguinito is a term of endearment (nickname) that was bestowed on Patato Valdes in Cuba. It translates to, the little penguin. However, make no mistake about it, when Patato plays the congas, he proves that size is not an issue. Patato's unique, melodic approach to drumming is unmistakable.

UNICO Y DIFERENTE is Patato at his best in a Latin-Jazz setting. I honestly can't think of one track I prefer over the other. The level of musicianship, choice of material and execution are all top-notch. For Patato fans and Jazz lovers alike, this is a must have.

I am off to see Patato perform with Candido and Giovanni Hidalgo this Friday (2/30) at The Conga Kings Concert (Town Hall, NYC)!!!! For a taste of what I am referring to, check out, THE CONGA KINGS, Patato's previous (historic) recording.
