Joan Morris and her husband, composer William Bolcom, take another trip back to the early days of Broadway musicals and earlier. In the same groove as their earlier albums, After the Ball and Vaudeville. A great addition to your collection if you love this kind of music, performed the way it was meant to be heard.

Back in 1974, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, and her husband, William Bolcom, recorded "After the Ball," a collection of turn-of-the-century popular songs, some of which hadn't been recorded since the early part of the century, if ever. Now, after bringing their talents to the music of Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and most recently, Vincent Youmans, they return to the turn of the century with this delightful collection. Note: no compromises were made with the original turn-of-the-century lyrics; this CD is not for those obsessed with "political correctness." But then, those obsessed with political correctness generally don't have much taste, anyway.

    Three great singers from Sudan, Castile and Galicia have gathered together to just enjoy the simple pleasure of singing. In this very stripped-down production, there is room for the singers to explore their individual styles and their different group dynamics. The music is often just guitar or percussion, or simple combinations of the two, with a touch of bass on a few tracks. Jesús Pimentel, the guitarist here, offers a beguiling range of rhythms from flamenco, Cuban, and Galician roots that are richly ornamented, but always in the service of the vocalists. The various combinations of Uxia's huskiness, Rasha's open chant, and Maria Salgado's Cuban-tinged Castilian formality offer interesting looks at music from the Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal. The album is evenly divided by solo pieces (with the others often supplying choral backing) and full trio works where everyone explores some unusual harmonies by reaching into their own experience for both common ground and unique contrasts. --Louis Gibson

    I have owned this album for quite some time now. But let me say that the first time I heard it, my clock radio was going off at 8 in the morning. There was a world music show playing the second song off this album. I swear I thought the music so beautiful I believed I was still dreaming. I faded in and out while the song played and finally realized it was my clock radio and not a dream. Don't judge a book by it's cover (album art here is pretty sub-par). The content on this one is phenominal, trust me :) Any album you can listen to year after year and still walk away with something new gets my big 'ol thumbs upper. Thanks.

            I sometimes wonder if digital really suits Satie. The hard fact of the matter is that digital is very representitive of what you hear in real life, whereas vinyl is distorted by a warmth that isn't necessarily there. So I question whether this is a decent enough performance or whether it would sound better on vinyl to create a warmth that isn't really there in the playing...
