Product Description
Joe Cuba's 'x-rated' album, with the track 'Pud-da-din' ('My baby loves me when I pud-da-din...' -- sing it out loud and it will make sense). Loads of great jazzy playing, including the massive two part 'Joe Cuba's Madness', a real jam session. One of Joe's slammin' post-boogaloo albums -- with great production, a very soulful vibe, and a good hard sound throughout! The set's as groundbreaking as Joe's work ever was, with a strong mix of Latin jazz styles, touched by some uptown soul and all the tight small-combo grooving that Joe could always provide. A nice groover, and not that easy to find! Vampi Soul. Digipak. 2002.

Richard Rodgers always considered Carousel his favorite score, even though it didn't generate the number of popular hits of some of the other shows he produced with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. Their adaptation of the Ferenc Molnar play Liliom is marked by three especially sublime moments. "The Carousel Waltz," Rodgers's alternative to the traditional Broadway overture, serves as an orchestral backdrop to the opening scene and is one of the best miniatures ever written for the theater. "If I Loved You," which establishes the romance of carnival barker Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae, a late replacement for Frank Sinatra) and nice girl Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), is a musical minidrama in which the pair's discussion of how they are not in love reveals just how much they are in love. "Soliloquy" is Billy's powerful solo that foreshadows the action to come in Act II. Add the inspirational anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone," and you have Rodgers and Hammerstein's most extraordinary, near-operatic score. On the soundtrack for the 1956 film, MacRae and Jones are in exceptional voice (following their success in 1955's Oklahoma) and the orchestra sounds glorious, but unfortunately some of the numbers were shortened, most notably "If I Loved You." Extensive production notes, an interview with Jones, and a synopsis are included. --David Horiuchi

MacRae and Jones soar in this tragic R&H musical.......2007-02-11
This film adaptation of Carousel came shortly after the Oklahoma! film and reunited Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. Although the film was not well-received at the box office, the soundtrack shows MacRae, Jones and the superb cast performing their roles to their heart's content. Their performance helps bring out the pathos in this tragic R&H musical, which Rodgers himself considered his favourite of all his works.
MacRae shines vocally as Billy Bigelow, bringing an open-hearted musicality and sincerity to his stout-hearted portrayal. MacRae stands out in Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, which some reviewers have considered one of the finest vocal performances of the 20th century. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones, who lends her tender voice and personality to her portrayal as Julie. Listen to the chemistry they exude during the pivotal If I Loved You duet, as if they're overcoming their shyness and drawing sustenance from each other with their love. The supporting cast also gives its all in performing their roles. Claramae Turner's hearty Nettie brims with sincerity, warmth and tenderness, and she leads a rousing rendition of June is Bustin' Out All Over and renders You'll Never Walk Alone touchingly. Barbara Ruick and Robert Rounseville are superb as Carrie and Mr. Snow, although I admit I would have liked a little more humour. I also admit I would have liked Cameron Mitchell as Jigger to sound more sinister, like Fisher Stevens did in the 1994 Broadway revival recording. But even as it is, everyone sings gloriously and is given sumptuous backing from Alfred Newman's superb arrangements and the 20th-Century Fox Orchestra, when it shines out in the ballets.
If I'm adding to the praise of these critic-proof performance, you'll wonder, why am I giving only 4 stars? Well, it's because the extra sound effects from the unreleased sequences tend to jar after a while. I know some of you are complaining that the dance sequences are plagued by extraneous sound effects and noise. I share the same feelings too and also wish that the producers had utilised the original studio pre-recordings for a sumptuous listening experience. However, let us at least be grateful that Didier Deutsch and his production team have made these unreleased sequences available on a soundtrack CD reissue. At least it's a step in the right direction before the entire canon of R&H film soundtracks (yes, including South Pacific and The Sound of Music) gets its due as deluxe 2-CD sets, complete with underscore.
However, don't let this gripe dissuade you from buying this soundtrack. It offers a complete musical experience that one could only dream of in the previous CD reissues of the soundtrack. And it demonstrates the element that Rodgers & Hammerstein were discovering in their musicals.
Great Music.......2007-01-04
Rogers and Hammerstein were in a different league when it came to writing musicals. Their music, lyrics and story are never alike. These two partners were exceptional and their music shows it. Carousel is a tragic story but also shows that human nature can rise above adversity. The music is wonderful and the characters believable. A great movie.
Response to David Pabian's review below.......2004-06-30
Response to David Pabian's review:
My review was not in error, as Mr. Pabian expects. The review was for the original CD release, not this expanded version. Amazon lifted it out of that spot and dropped it here, which of course makes it anachronistic. Why they did it without reading it is certainly an inept decision.
Gummed up an Original.......2003-06-10
This overblown "completeitis" has got to stop. The original soundtrack album Carousel Waltz is now relegated to Appendix status, and terrible sonics accompany dancers' footstomping in the "new" expanded musical sequences, taken directly from the soundtrack rather than from still-existing musical tracks. There was a reason soundtrack recordings were studio performances. The proportions were right, the timings were correct for an overall BALANCED listening experience. These gawdawful expanded editions, often with dialogue thrown in, completely throw off those balances. An argument might be made for expanded sequences appropriate to a CDs longer playing time than the standard L.P. 45min., but possibly only if those sequences are from their original studio-recorded, pre release-print mix -- which could have easily been done in this case. A quick word on one of the above reviews: This is not the first time the complete Carousel Waltz is heard in stereo. There were two previous CD remasterings of the original soundtrack whereon it was included. And the reprise of "If I loved You" was part of every soundtrack release, mono and stereo.

Pure Country-Rock Perfection!.......2006-11-10
In mid 1972, `Pure Prairie League' busted out with an impossibly likable song called, "Amie", which shot up the charts. The album soon became a classic country-rock favorite. With breezy acoustic ballads and gentle harmonies, Pure Prairie League was on its way to pop stardom. The opener, "Jazzman" glides along with slide guitar and ample guitar hooks. "Early Morning Riser" and "Amie" are simple upbeat melodic tunes that beg repeated listens. The ballads, `Falling In And Out Of Love", Boulder Skies" and "Call Me, Tell Me" are incredibly imotive with sparse strings that carry that emotional sentiment right to the end of the last song. If anything, this set is too short, but it's sweetly short and an instant classic.
Sets the standard for country rock.......2005-12-11
Bustin' Out (1972.) Pure Prairie League's second album.
INTRODUCTION:
In 1972, there was a new country rock group breaking into the musical mainstream. The Pure Prairie League, a Cincinnati group featuring Craig Lee Fuller, George Ed Powell, Jim Lanham, John David Call, and Jim Caughlan, released their debut album in that year. The band's fusion of country and rock alike didn't take off right away, but it definitely hinted at the band's potential. Following the release of the debut album, Lanham, Cal, and Caughlan left the band, and they recruited replacement drummer William Frank Hinds. The quartet had been shaven down to a trio. On the band's second album, Bustin' Out, released later in 1972, they featured the song Amie - the song that would be their biggest hit, and the one that would often plague the band with a one-hit wonder status. So, how is the group's second album? Is Amie the only noteworthy thing here, or is it full of underrated masterpieces? You're gonna have to keep reading to find out!
OVERVIEW:
The Pure Prairie League released Bustin' Out in 1972. For the band's second album, the group consisted of Craig Lee Fuller on bass, vocals, and guitar, George Ed Powell on guitar and vocals, and William Frank Hinds on drums. This was the first album the band did as a trio - All of the original band members other than Fuller and Powell left. It was the first album Hinds did with the band. Tracklist consists of Jazzman, Angel Number Nine, Leave My Heart Alone, Early Morning Riser, Falling In And Out Of Love, Amie, Boulder Skies, Angel, and Call Me Tell Me.
REVIEW:
I bought this album out of sheer curiosity. Because I loved the song Amie, I was eager to check out some of the other stuff the group did. And I don't like compilations, so the album with Amie seemed like the idea place for me to start. It was hard to know what to expect, but I must say, I was rather impressed by the final result. THIS is the way country rock is supposed to sound! It's rather amazing that the group is only known well for the one song, because every one they serve up here is fantastic. Let's take a look at the tracklist.
-SIDE A-
-Jazzman: The band starts the album with an excellent tune. This is more along the lines of traditional country music than country rock, but that doesn't make it any less excellent. They started things off with a song that beautifully shows off their musical diversity - a smart love. Nice opener.
-Angel Number Nine: On the second track, the band cracks out the electric guitars. The group stays true to country roots on this song, but definitely gives it a country rock edge at the same time. A solid track through and through, and certainly one of the strongest cuts here.
-Leave My Heart Alone: We move onto another excellent track. Although dominantly acoustic, the band does shell out some electric guitar, particularly in the chorus. The acoustic and electric fusion works better than you might think. It's a song well worth checking out.
-Early Morning Riser: This one is straightforward, acoustic-intensive country rock. One frequent comparison I see is people comparing the group to the Eagles, who started out as a country rock band. This song sound a good deal similar to early Eagles, particularly the Desperado period. If you like the early Eagles, you'll like this song.
-SIDE B-
-Falling In And Out Of Love: Slow, melodic, acoustic, and short. This track is really more of an introduction to the song Amie than a full-fledged song on its own. Not a bad song by any means, but definitely more of a companion piece than anything else.
-Amie: And here we have the song that gave the Pure Prairie League what little recognition they have gotten over the years. The country-flavored rock ballad is a true classic, and the song deserves all of the credit it gets. I wish other songs by the band would get similar recognition, but if one of their songs is going to get all the credit, I'm glad it's this one.
-Boulder Skies: An excellent country rock ballad. Taking traditional country elements and lighter, folk rock elements, the song also employs backing orchestral instrumentation. In the end, it stands as one of the finest things this album has to offer its listeners. It should have been a bigger hit!
-Angel: Another slower song, and another good one as well. However, unlike the previous track, this one is more acoustic-intensive, and sticks closer to the traditional country elements. Every song on this album is great in its own way and this one is no exception to the rule.
-Come And Tell Me: We close out the album with another excellent, acoustic-intensive song. Combining acoustic guitars with cymbal-heavy percussion, the results are very good. All in all, the band finishes the album on a high note.
OVERALL:
In the end, the sophomore album from the Pure Prairie League is one of the strongest in their extensive catalogue. The band has many excellent albums, and due to the success of Amie, this is the most popular one of the lot. And why not? It's definitely one of their finest works. If you're a fan of country rock, check these guys out. The Pure Prairie League knew how to do country rock right, and they demonstrate it nine times over on this album. Don't hesitate to check these guys out if you're a country rock fan! Highly recommended!
EDITION NOTES:
This album was only released on CD once, and the version that is available is tough to come by, implying it is no longer in print, or is just in limited quantities these days. It's tough to find, so most likely you'll just have to order it online.
Craig Fuller's Masterpiece.......2005-08-15
This, the second album for the group, is dominated by Fuller's presence: vocals, songwriting, guitar playing and arranging. It's clearly his masterpiece, building on his work on the first album, which was more electric and countryfied, and coming before the maturation of things (a more acoustic-dominated sound) which would be measured in American Flyer and Fuller-Kaz.
This album is clearly a good companion for a road trip, with moving music made for the highway.
As far as mood music, it's all happy. Despite the sorrows penned in this collection of songs, the overall effect is "I've been hurt but I'm getting over it," never a downer in mood but propelled by the masterful music.
As an acoustic guitarist Fuller is unbeatable, creating lush textures in his softer material (note the interplay of guitars on each channel on "Angel" as they sashay in and out) and masterful leads on "Amie" and "Angel."
Whether or not George Ed Powell's material for this project was up to snuff or not or whether Fuller's domination forced other compositions out, "Leave My Heart Alone" belongs on the album. The guitars are once again playing off each other and make a great track even though the vocals are buried almost to the point of unintelligibility. This song has great slide guitar work. Powell's songwriting prowess, first seen on PPL's first album, would mature later in the group's recorded history. Here he's just along for the ride, and ride is just fine.
"Bustin' Out" never grows old, never sounds dated, and the studio quality is unsurpassed for it's time. Too bad engineer/producer Bob Ringe didn't produce more albums but went back to artist representation with William Morris Agency.
Bustin Out is absolutely AWESOME!!!!!! .......2005-05-06
Rarely do you stumble into a fourteen year old teenager named Colin who truly appreciates the words, voices, guitars and the awesome talent inside of 1970's music. This exceptionally bright, talented and funny teenager with a heart of gold turned me on to Pure Prairie League's "Bustin Out" a few weeks ago. I love each and every song on this CD and when you find yourself at fifty nine years old discovering this group of musicians for the first time, you come away feeling like you've missed something special along the way. I will be buying this CD for all of my friends. Hey Colin, music like this will continue to bring sunshine into your life... Let no one break your spirit!!
The Beginning Of A Legend.......2005-02-25
A long standing classic from one of the great country rock groups ,PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE , Craig Lee Fuller put himself at the forefront of not just country rock but music in general and cemented himself permanently as one of the great singer/songwriters of our era with this classic. Fuller's prior work with J.D Blackfoot on THE ULTIMATE PROPHECY and PPL'S self titled debut LP already had established him as an immensely gifted songwriter with an unforgettable voice- one that is perfectly at home in rock , country , blues , or any type of music he applies it to. Fortunately for music fans, he has done just that throughout his career. On this CD, Fuller takes things to a whole new level , and brings the listener on an emotional roller coaster while doing so.PPL is known for incredibly tight harmonies and superb musicianship along with superior songwriting.his CD has it all.
For a variety of reasons, not the least of which was RCA's dismal effort in bringing PPL's first two LP's in 1972 to the public's attention , this music didn't achieve the accolades it so richly deserved until a few years after it's release. Fuller left in early 1973,and PPL caught fire with TWO LANE HIGHWAY, it's first gold LP,in 1975.The first two LP's were reissued and incredibly,Bustin'Out went gold almost three years after it's release.There is no doubt bands like The Eagles took more than a page from PPL's book. On this CD, Fuller surpasses anything done by Henley, Frey , Browne ,or anyone else from that genre you would care to mention. The versatility , complexity and overall depth displayed in his songwriting was unmatched by those who received far more publicity .Much the same can be said for his vocals.Even today,to try and categorize his music on this effort is fruitless; his music transcends a particular genre and it`s timeless.
There is no point in trying to pinpoint which tracks standout; that is strictly personal opinion , a matter of taste. You can read several reviews and find different choices on each one .That is testament to caliber of this CD.
AMIE , with it's lead in FALLING IN AND OUT OF LOVE , needs no introduction. Over 30 years later, the song has a life of it's own , one that shows no signs of slowing down. It's been covered by many covered by some of today's country stars , and is still standard airplay on many radio stations. The song and it's rise to fame is an amazing story in itself. The quick picking , rich , tight harmonies of PPL are flawless and AMIE exemplifies it. A Craig Fuller classic. LEAVE MY HEART ALONE , by George Ed Powell , is an indication of things to come from him. A terrific country rocker, Powell shows here his songwriting and singing would also be a major force in country rock with an uptempo song featuring some great vocals and driving guitar work.
JAZZMAN ( one of two tracks not written by Fuller ) is a slow, easy tune put across in a very effective almost hypnotic , melancholy blues type way. ANGEL also is of the laid back variety but this one takes on an almost haunting , spiritual type aura. That's no surprise, since Fuller originally did it in 1969 on THE ULTIMATE PROPHECY with JD Blackfoot. EARLY MORNING RISER moves along in a more upbeat country rock type mode - wrapping up with a terrific guitar picking session. On BOULDER SKIES , Fuller creates a sense of imagery , with a you-are -there feel ,a part of the story. A superb effort. CALL ME , TELL ME again features some very crafty lyrics in which you are taken through snapshot view of a relationship going bad and ultimately fails. The songs builds throughout both musically and emotionally.In ANGEL # 9 , Fuller unabashedly pushes the emotional envelope to the extent you can't help but feel his anguish. This is a very personal tune to Fuller , dealing with an ongoing situation in his life. He manages to capture his thoughts and emotions in this song in an extremely powerful gut wrenching effort. He doesn`t hold back his feelings , he lets then all out -the confusion , frustration and the anger which clearly turns to rage by the songs end . Incredible. The guitar work is just as explosive , perfectly complimenting the powerful vocals.
Much has been made of how slickly this was produced but the solid music , lyrics and vocals are what this CD is really all about.The pedal steel is quite good, although I do miss the more powerful , imaginative presence of John David Call 's steel which lit things up like nobody else on PPL's debut LP. Fortunately Call's magic would return for the next 4 LP's after Bustin' Out.
Powell would showcase his terrific singing/songwriting on the next 5 LP's, establishing himself as a country rock great in his own right. The versatile , outstanding keyboard work of Mike Connor would become a permanent fixture in the unique sounds of PPL.Drummer Billy Hinds would provide PPL with a strong foundation,driving PPL's sound until the group's end in 1988. Bassist and singer Mike Reilly joined PPL when this was being recorded although he does not appear on it. He would become PPL's frontman,leading PPL to the pinnacle of country rock right into the 80's.
Fuller proved BUSTIN' OUT was no fluke. He would return in 1975 to record two LP's with AMERICAN FLYER ,once again showcasing his superior songwriting/songwriting. These are available now as a two for one and certainly are a must in any collection. He then released an LP, Fuller - Kaz,after Flyer (Kaz was a member of Flyer). In the mid 80's he returned to PPL and released MEMENTOS, his vocals perhaps even stronger than ever. He performed a truly amazing Feat in the late 80's and early 90's when he spearheaded a huge comeback for LITTLE FEAT, who had been missing in action for ten years.Incredibly,and against a very strong bias,Fuller's singing and songwriting brought Feat back from the dead,leading them to their first gold LP in their history , Let It Roll. Like I said in the beginning- Fuller may not have gotten the publicity, but he didn't need it - his music generated the attention.
***EDIT NOTE : PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE IS BACK !!***
They have just released a sensational new CD, ALL IN GOOD TIME. They have received rave reviews on their recent national tour. The band is led by Reilly and Fuller, who are joined by Nashville award winners Fats Kaplin, Curtis Wright and Rick Schell.It's classic PPL-incredible singing and songwriting. It's a must ! Check out their website for details, you'll love this CD !!

Customer Reviews:
Great Music - mediocre remastering.......2007-06-17
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this CD as it combined the two wonderful Pure Praire League releases from the early Craig Fuller era. The bad news is that this is not the CD to buy if you really want Bustin' Out. Get the RCA Bustin' Out CD instead. It's a tad thin sounding, but both it and the original LP sound FAR better than this CD. But if what you're after is a CD of their self titled LP, this is it (unfortunately at twice the price).
The remastering is just awful on the Bustin' Out half. As with much of today's engineering, it is heavily compressed, sacrificing all to achieve more volume. Fuller's wonderful voice becomes mildy distorted and a band with a great clean acoustic/electric sound somehow actually winds up sounding muddy. Any sense of dynamics or nuance is pretty much gone from this mix. It's actually hard to see how this could happen... when a beautiful little quiet reflective vocal in a mellow rocker like Jazzman gets distorted, isn't it a sign that it's gone a little too far?
The remastering on the self-titled half of the CD isn't all that bad. It doesn't quite match up to the original record, but I would never have noticed if the Bustin' Out half wasn't so bad that I compared the other half. Anyway, I really wanted the self titled half so I'll take what I can get and I'm happy for it.
I guess that I just don't understand this current sound engineering compression fad. There is so much more to mixing and mastering than making it as loud as possible. All we really want to do with these 70's reissues is to replace our record collections, and we can all adjust the loudness with the volume knob. But what do we do when the mix has been wrecked?
p.s. pick up the All In Good Time Fuller/PPL CD. It's great to hear them back together and sounding fantastic. Purchase quickly... before it gets remastered!
In a "League" of their own..........2007-03-16
When country met rock Pure Prairie League was there to answer the call. Although I am a fan of all their work, these two albums with Craig Fuller and the original line up are the best albums. It's a gem to have them both on the same cd. So if you are an old fan of the League or just getting started this cd is a must for you collection. The quality is great by the way...
Classic Albums - Good Mastering.......2007-02-26
Both albums have been previously released in the USA - Bustin Out has been long available on RCA, in a thin and tin-box sounding CD that is one of the worst mastered CD's I've ever heard. The original LP was far superior. The Bustin Out tracks on RCA's PPL Greatest Hits (1999) were much better, and this CD's mastering is equal to that compilation's. The first PPL album was previously available on CD on the Renaissance label (1997) in a 2-fer with "If The Shoe Fits", and the mastering here is basically the same. A nice reissue of 2 essential and terrific 70's country rock albums by the definitive Pure Prairie League - with Craig Fuller up front.
~~~Also find the reissue of Craig's next 2 albums (with "American Flyer") on the Collector's Choice label, his work with Little Feat on "Let It Roll"/"Representing The Mambo"/"Shake Me Up" and the great new PPL album with Craig - "All In Good Time" (2006).
No Horsing Around.......2006-12-30
One thing about getting old, you can look back on your life and realize which recordings had the biggest impact. It is a personal journey, one that may or may not make sense to anyone else. With that in mind, I am listing my five favorite albums of all time:
1. Buffalo Springfield (self-titled)
2. Poco - "Pickin' Up the Pieces"
3. John Stewart - "Cannons In the Rain"
4. Matthew's Southern Comfort - "Later That Same Year"
5. Pure Prairie League (self-titled)
When reviewing an album, it is important to give the reader a glimpse of where your musical tastes lie . . . or the review is somewhat pointless. I am not saying that these are the five best albums ever recorded, but I am saying that these recordings are the ones that had the biggest impact on me personally. I prefer the first Pure Prairie League album over the second, but they are both here for you to listen to and enjoy. I cannot imagine you not liking this CD, as it helped define what is truely great about country rock . . . rough edges and all. So yeah, I think it would definately be worthwhile to saddle-up, ride into the past, open-up those saddlebags, and dust these guys off.
I Beg to differ!.......2006-12-12
I have to offer a rebuttal to A. Cushman's review of this release. Yes, I do agree that it's wonderful music. In fact, these two albums represent two of the finest country-rock albums ever made, and that's saying something considering some of the competition that would put them up against. But where Andy and I part company is on the sound quality of this disc. It is absolutely, definitely, far superior to the earlier domestic RCA release. I know, because I have both. Two years ago I wrote another review of the domestic version, in which I blasted RCA for turning out such a thin, tinny sounding piece of crap. When I first listened to this new remastered release, it was like a breath of fresh air. Unless RCA has remastered the newer domestic pressings without telling anyone (which I seriously doubt), there is no way you can listen to both and say that they sound alike. With all due respect, Mr. Cushman, what kind of system do you own? Maybe it's time for an upgrade!
That having been said, let me re-emphasize that this disc does indeed contain two very fine albums. The better of the two is "Bustin' Out", which contains what has to be the group's best known song, "Amie", bookended by the very beautiful, acoustic "Falling In And Out Of Love". My other personal favorite is "Early Morning Riser"-- a great song for cruisin down the highway on a warm sunny day with the windows down. This album is simply great, in my opinion. Their debut album, simply titled "Pure Praire League", is also included and also excellent-- though not quite as polished-- and contains a number of really great songs as well (my personal favorite being the melancholy "Harmony Song").
After those two albums came the very unfortunate departure of Craig Fuller, and the group and their music were never quite the same from that point on. Not genuinely bad, please understand, but definitely not the equal of what you'll hear here. This disc represents this band at its finest, the price is right, and it sounds great too. By all means, pass on the vastly inferior domestic version of "Bustin' Out" and go for this excellent 2-fer import. It's a far better value, and just plain more enjoyable to listen to. And enjoy it you will. If you're a fan of bands like Poco or the Eagles-- or quality country rock in general-- this is a must-have!
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."
In the opening song of "Something Wonderful," Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel sings, "All the sounds of the Earth are like music." They most definitely are when Terfel surrounds them with his resonant baritone. Every phrase of Rodgers and Hammerstein's music is imbued with uncommon sensitivity, impeccable phrasing, and dazzling beauty. Terfel's rich and meaty voice shares a plate with delicate pianissimos, unabashed sentimentality, and swaggering forthrightness. He successfully tackles songs originally written for women. In "It Might as Well Be Spring," he transforms dippy into dapper. And he turns "Bali Hai" into a foreboding, demanding, and seductive call; the listener must helplessly succumb to the world of his sensitive manliness. His interpretations of the old standards--"If I Loved You," "Soliloquy," "This Nearly Was Mine," "Some Enchanted Evening"--are stellar. Despite the temporary lulls caused by the second-class songs from "Allegro," Terfel does a first-class job of bringing them to life. Undoubtedly one of the best crossover records of all time. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
I came across the CD by sheer accident and am I glad I did. Wonderful music. Thanks for the music Bryn.
Great Music + Terrific Lyrics +Decent Singing = Very Nice CD.......2005-01-27
While not an expert on technical singing I really, really like this CD. I think Terfel's voice is pretty decent & he sings both male/female lead R & H songs for a total of twenty cuts. One cut I really enjoyed , but had never heard before was the song "So Far"
from R & H's "Allegro" with those Richard Roger's hooks & terrific Oscar Hammerstein lyrics. Felt that the orchestra on this session made a good move using the original orchestrations for a classic R & H feel. I concur with the reviewer regarding the miking of Terfel's voice in this session which seems too low forcing the listener to turn up the volumne.
A new meaning of throat singing........2004-06-11
I cannot believe that the critics of today can rave about such an inferior singer as Byrn Terfel. He sings so badly, I can't believe he has had the career he's had. I don't care how many roles he's sung, he hasn't any vocal technique at all. If anyone would care to hear great singing, buy the; "Thomas L. Thomas" Voice of Firestone video and listen to a great Welsh singer. This is a great artist and vocal technician. Try; "John Charles Thomas," "Lawrence Tibbett," or "Nelson Eddy." Bryn Terfel couldn't carry their music cases!
Superb matchmaking in Terfel's R&H recital.......2004-03-09
You might think that it is a very superflous mismatch for an opera singer to try his vocal cords on the Broadway songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein. However, in this R&H offering by Bryn Terfel, he proves that it is a perfect match between singer and repertoire for a classical crossover record of this pedigree. Terfel communicates the essence of each of the 20 songs to the listener, and allows them to sound fresh and new. And it helps that he has been a R&H fan for many years with the music already close to his heart. He is given superb backing from the well-conducted Opera North forces an warm, natural recording.
From the first phrase of Terfel's uplifting opening version of "Oh, what a beautiful morning" from Oklahoma!, we listeners intuitively know that this is not going to be your superflous run-of-the-mill classical crossover offering of R&H songs. Terfel uses his big voice to great effect in Billy Bigelow's two songs from Carousel, "If I loved you" and the pivotal "Soliloquy" that builds up to a devastating climax. When he does this for Emile's two big solos in South Pacific, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine," he also makes them sound fresh and intuitively conveys their essence. He also thrills us even when his voice is soft and tender, such as on Lietunant Cable's "Younger than Springtime" and especially on Captain von Trapp's "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music.
Besides the obvious highlights in this R&H offering, Terfel unearths some new delights. He does this by trying his vocal cords on songs that were originally intended for women, most notably in Nettie's two big numbers in Carousel, "June is busting out all over" and "You'll never walk alone", which he pulls off convincingly in a straight-laced and serious manner without sounding cliched. (In the booklet, "You'll never walk alone" was stated as being sung by the Chorus, but then in the show, it is sung by Nettie.) He is also wistful on "It might as well be Spring" from State Fair, and philosophical on Lady Thiang's "Something Wondreful" from The King and I. He also evokes a dreamlike quality on Bloody Mary's "Bali Ha'i" in South Pacific. The other unusual thing that Terfel does is include some unknown songs and treat them ravishingly. Four of them are from Allegro, highlighted by a charming "So Far," a reflective "A Fellow needs a girl" and a powerful "Come Home", and he also sings "No Other Love" from Me and Juliet as ravishingly as "I Have Dreamed."
If I have any quibbles, there are only two minor ones. Terfel's R&H offering runs for 74 minutes, and still has six minutes of empty space on a CD. I'm sure that Terfel could have given thought to the Mother Abbess's "Climb Every Mountain" from The Sound of Music, which I consider a more universal and less-cliched song than "You'll never walk alone" from Carousel. It would have suited his full-throated, big-voiced characteristic very well. Also, this offering of R&H seems to be lopsided to emphasise more of the first part of R&H. Sixteen tracks cover R&H from Oklahoma to South Pacific, with four tracks that cover their second half from The King and I to The Sound of Music. As such I would have liked to hear him sing a more balanced repertoire of R&H songs with equal emphasis to both halves of their collaboration. Perhaps he might record a Volume 2 with songs from the latter part of their collaboration in the near future. But with 74 delightful minutes of Terfel's R&H offering, how could anybody complain about the quality of this recital, especially with a lavish booklet complete with copious notes by R&H expert Ethan Mordden and full lyrics.
Overall, though, I'm very sure that this R&H offering is both a highlight of Terfel's discography, and can ably recommended with his recording of Schubert songs to anybody who wants to get to know his work well. It can also be recommended to Rodgers & Hammerstein fans old and new.
By the way, I also recommend the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra, with another superlative Telarc offering by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Erich Kunzel. This recital is just as outstanding as Terfel's R&H offering. And, there is a wealth of cast recordings that new R&H fans will want to snap up, so this Terfel disc will be an ideal stepping-stone for them.
Broadway or Opera... This CD is indeed ýSomething Wonderfulý.......2003-07-25
It becomes clearer with every disk Bryn releases... he turns whatever he touches into gold! This CD is indeed `Something Wonderful'. From the first listen I was in love with this disk and can't get enough.
To begin, Rodgers and Hammerstein couldn't be more appropriately sung. From a time before electric amplification the sweeping melodies of Richard Rodgers were intended to be sung as Bryn illustrates. As I say every time, his diction is impeccable, his musicianship is unsurpassed, and his enthusiasm is wonderful. As for Oscar Hammerstein, I'm sure he doesn't mind a little foreign accent... because every word is clear and understandable.
To compare the accent of Terfel to Pavarotti and Carreras is simply misguided. Although Pavarotti and Carreras are top-notch for what they do, neither pursues `Broadway' music seriously. Their ventures into the medium are limited to Gala concerts and the occasional snippet on a CD... not on stage depicting a role, but simply to sing a beautiful song. Mr. Terfel, on the other hand, researches the roles, coaches them, and is constantly pursued to perform them. His accent is one of slight vowel or consonant differences, which do not detract from the beautiful music. The music is well done and the story clear. Lets not nitpick diction or the French will have our hides for Les Miserables!
For the music, the recording quality is great. One reviewer mentioned poor sound quality and I do believe that person may have a bad disk or player... on my end the sound is full and robust; Bryn's voice dominates the sound. The orchestrations are full and lush. When dealing with modern houses and theatres the orchestra pits are usually quite small, and consequently the ensembles themselves. CDs like this one allow for fully orchestrated music to be heard, with a large symphony of musicians. The numbers that utilize chorus, which sings very well, are well balanced.
This disk is a great buy in my book. Bryn Terfel is a phenomenal performer and he sings this genre excellently. Check out his `If Ever I Would Leave You', `Under The Stars', `We'll Keep a Welcome', `Songs of My Welsh Home', and numerous classical recordings like `Opera Arias', `Meet Bryn Terfel', `The Vagabond', `Wagner', `Schumann Lieder', and an large collection of full opera recordings. Enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Irresistible.......2005-07-29
From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.
This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).
In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.
"Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26
Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.
This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.
After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.
Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.
By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.
Excellent!.......2003-04-08
This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.
Great Arrangments.......2001-09-02
This is a first rate album with great arrangments and orchestrations. If you're a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, you can't afford to miss this specatacular album
Bustin' Out.......2007-05-06
A Good Collection by Mr. James. My standout song in this collection is the song, "You and I" (8:03 - extended cut!). I've admired Rick James work for many years, buy never bought any...until this disc! Four stars!!
Better than rap.......2004-08-25
going by what my uncles said, i thought I'd take a chance on
rick james. he's everything they said and more. actually, i'm
pretty tired of this formula stuff thats all rap and no music,
how refreshing to hear real stuff from a pioneer. wish i was
around earlier to really appreciate his stuff. Long life for
mr. james music. gonna tell all my friends. thanks,
willie.
Can't Get Into It.......2004-06-02
This is the first time i've ever heard Rick James, and I really don't like it as there are only a couple songs that I can get into. I assume that this is a Rick James Greatest Hits but theres nothing great about it.
My only favorite songs are Give It To Me Baby, Superfreak, and U Bring The Freak Out.
Thank God this isn't my cd, as I could've wasted $15.00
Bassic Rick James.......2002-08-29
All his good stuff.I always liked "Hollywood" from his first LP
but it was not included on this cd.Rick is a gifted vocalist
and musician who new how to get a party going.The cd also includes an informative booklet that gives a bio and background on songs and bandmates.
Listen to his version of Michael Henderson's "Starship", a real
show stopper!
sup[erfreaky yeah.......2001-08-15
the best of rick if you want freak funk come here, mary jane is the all time weed smokers anthemn,sampled to death,rick sang of his life of partying, groupies, drugs, and just plain old fun. unfortunately this was what caused rick to fade away in the 80's his freaky habits. but like i said this is a good collection of his greatest hits.
bustin' melonz..........2005-09-18
Very decent mid 90's hip hop album from a crew I know nothing else about except that this, their only album, has some excellent tracks. The style is not so far removed from early Pharcyde, but with a slightly more gangsta emphasis in the lyrical content. The production is mostly raw and percussive with very cool samples (especially "Flippin' Off The Tip" which will have to go down as the best hip hop track ever to sample jimi hendrix, IMO), but what lets the album down slightly are the annoying skits in between most tracks which are about 1 minute long each, and sound like they were recorded on a dictaphone with loads of harsh distortion. they're just not nice to listen to. The tracks and emcees (there's about 5 or 6 different rappers) are all up to par...an album to pick up if you see it.
BUSTIN' OUT FOR THE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-04-17
Second time around and Rick Jame's truely gives up the funk 100%-even the two slow tunes "Space Love" and "Jefferson Ball" have enough sassy sax solo's and backup vocals for a superb late night groove!Now to the real meat-the title song is pure George Clinton-inspired P-punk-funk,if you will-all rhythm and chant.
"High On Your Love Suite" just JAMS away endlessly for over 7 minutes while "Cop N' Blow" is a tad smoother but grooves like mad."Fool On The Street" is a similar (but slightly catchier) tune that ends the album.
I recommend 'Bustin' Out' as a good introduction to early Rick James-his 1978 debut had a few classic tunes but was uneven with it's halfbaked filler and disco detours.On this 19979 album there's none of that so you get the meat and potatoes of Rick's particular elan.
Tight Set.......2003-08-10
always dug this Album."Fool on the Street" was my Cut."Jefferson Ball" is one of the baddest Slow Cuts most have never heard.the Arrangements there&whatnot are something else.if you thought "Dream-Maker" from 78 was something else than "Jefferson ball" takes it to another level."Bustin Out" One of Rick's Signature Funk Joints is still Slammin to this Day.the Early Genius of Rick is on Display here."Cop N Blow" Pre-Dated alot of the things that Prince would later add to His Music in the Mid 80's.it's really sad to me that Rick doesn't always get His Due.He was more than "Street Songs".
