Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-31

If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

3 out of 5 stars It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

4 out of 5 stars Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-10-23

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

4 out of 5 stars just a warning..........2005-10-14

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

5 out of 5 stars Legacy Performances of a Unique Talent.......2006-09-06

Chopin's Mazurkas have always proven an especially challenging collection for pianists. Over the last century three pianists came to be associated with them - Iganz Friedman, Arthur Rubinstein and William Kapell. Kapell, who died tragically at the age of 31 in a plane crash in 1953 had recorded a considerable number, and these are what make up this selection. Along with the two mentioned artists Kapell was instinctively at home with these highly complex short works. Where most pianists, even the very best ones could struggle a bit in these works' pitfalls, Kapell made it sound all so effortless. He was just at home in the Mazurka's tangled voices as a rabbit in a briar patch.
If you are familiar with some of Kapell's other performances and fear he might be too aggressive or push too hard here, fear not, this is really a very different Kapell then the driven concert performer.
The sound is perfectly acceptable and I highly urge you to consider this CD along with the performances of the Mazurkas by Friedman and Rubinstein. You will have a marvelous collection with some of the most intriquing and personal music Chopin ever composed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful performances !.......2004-10-30

Kapell's piano was imposing in mass and these Mazurcas selection are played with élan, full of delicacy , and rounded at all dynamics levels performed with aristocratic elegance and aristocratic mien .
Kapell was always a passionate man and in the search for the rightful tone , the precise articulation to get what he wanted literally signed for the eternity these piano works loaded with that intimacy hard to find in concert halls .
Fifty years ago in that absurd accident William Kapell the most prominent pianist of his generation died , leaving behind him a meteoric career a fevered pianism of the highest level .
And in this special and painful day I share with my intimate friends and music lovers and meet them to pay a more than deserved homage to his memory .
Several generations of pianists have emerged with undeniable virtues and amazing technique but most of them are not capable to state such level of commitment with the music beyond the score .
That is why his throne still keeps empty .

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Chopin!.......2001-04-03

William Kappell was, in a way, the Dennis Brain of the piano. Brain had a meteoric career playing the French horn, which was cut short by his early death -- and cognoscenti have been seeking out his old monaural records and CD's for decades. Kappell also had a tragically short career which accounts for the only deficiency of this CD. It was recorded with old monaural equipment. I predict that you won't notice that at all, because the genius of William Kappell shines through in these pieces. I think I would describe his Mazurkas as both very 'clean' and also 'lush.' He is playing carefully and bringing out the subtle beauty of these odd little dances. Chopin's Mazurkas always seem to have a "sweet and sour" character, often with a lyrical major theme at the start and finish, and a discordant minor gypsy-style theme in the middle. In Kappell's hands you hear other layers, and some of the pieces even have a sort of tango-like feel. Anyway, it's hard to describe what is so good about this CD, but buy it. You will listen to it again and again.

Chopin wrote mazurkas throughout his all-too-brief life, using this Polish dance as the basis for short pieces that encompass a world of harmonic explorations and varied emotions, from the subtly comic to the intensely sad. Rubinstein plays the 51 in the standard canon, skipping the unpublished youthful ones. Of his three recordings of the set, connoisseurs tend to prefer his first, from 1938-1939 (available on RCA, EMI, and Naxos) for their spontaneity. But these 1965-1966 stereo recordings in refreshingly alive transfers can't fail to please most listeners. They're a bit weightier than the early ones, but the added depth and Rubinstein's characterization of each piece yield big dividends. In the great C sharp minor Mazurka, Op. 50, No. 3, for example, he plays the beautiful opening theme with disarming simplicity that invests it with mournful regret, manages the transitions to bolder statements flawlessly, and turns a charming dance into a dramatic tone poem that says in five minutes what some composers need a full symphony to say. That miracle is repeated often in this set, as Rubinstein appears at first to be underplaying a piece until you realize the sophistication of his carefully modulated dynamics, gentle rubato, and varied tone. His was an outward simplicity that hid complex art. Throughout, he plays with a wonderful, singing tone, rhythmic life, and an aristocratic authority few have matched. --Dan Davis

This would be the greatest of all Rubinstein Chopin recordings except...there are the Polonaises (Volumte 28!), and the Nocturnes (Volume 46!). Count this one tied for 3rd, with the Ballades, the Waltzes, the.... Hey, wait -- you might as well get them all.

My only problem with this recording is that the repeat button on my CD player isn't working. I listen to one and say, "That's gotta be the best Rubinstein/Chopin Mazurka there could possibly be," but no sooner than I think that, that another one comes on, EVEN BETTER.

Okay, I have my fav. The great B Minor Opus 33 Number 4. This is mid-period Chopin at his finest, and Rubinstein at his finest, and we are privileged to be alive so that we can rehear it.

5 out of 5 stars Who Better than to Record the Mazurkas?.......2001-12-01

Chopin. Rubinstein. Mazurkas. Perfection. The impeccable Rubinstein rubato shines most when he plays the works which invite overindulgence, like the dance forms, or the easily sentimentalized nocturnes. Especially in these mazurkas where his rhythmic restraint is admirable. These recordings are quirky yet authoritative enough to make me wonder whether only a fellow Pole can play Chopin with such multifariousness (16 letters!) of movement within the staff. I've heard other recordings of the mazurkas, mainly Ashkenazy (boring... where's the life?) and individual performance pieces in compiliations, but none sparkle like the way Rubinstein makes them sparkle. Sublime.

    5 out of 5 stars Arthur Rubinstein: Chopin's 51 Mazurkas.......2001-04-07

Fabulous! Polish music at its best!

5 out of 5 stars The unsurpassable Rubinstein.......2001-03-29

While his recordings of other composers is somewhat uneven, Rubinstein is the absolute master of Chopin. Noone else captures the beauty, nuance, depth, poetry, and feel of his music in quite the same way, and the Mazurkas (which by the way sound wonderful in their new remastering) are no exception. Even the very familiar ones sound fresh in Rubinstein's hands, and whether you listen to these a few at a time (as I usually do) or straight through, I highly recommend this recording as well as the other reissues in this series.

Near the end of his long life, Artur Rubinstein declared these Mazurkas among the best recordings he had ever made. They're certainly convincing in their lyric simplicity, tonal warmth, and healthy, uncluttered sentiment. There are, however, other valid approaches to these wonderful works. Rubinstein himself, for instance, was a friskier and riskier player when he recorded the set for EMI in the thirties. The pianist's fifties-remakes are more grounded, yet retain the joie de vivre and rhythmic snap that were hallmarks of his live performances. On the other hand, the stereo versions benefit from superior engineering and a more scrupulous approach to Chopin's text. Decisions, decisions. --Jed Distler

A mazurka is a little Polish folk dance in triple time, kind of like a waltz, but with the accent more often than not on the second beat. That gives the music a curious "hopping" quality that adds to the quirky quality of the music that Chopin wrote in this form. While very simple in structure, Chopin's mazurkas constantly challenged his harmonic ingenuity, and they contain some of his most daring tonal experiments. PBS fans may recall, for example, Leonard Bernstein's analysis of Op. 17 No. 4 as part of his Harvard lectures broadcast under the title "The Unanswered Question." Rubinstein's performances of these jewels are for many the supreme achievement in what is widely regarded as the finest series of Chopin recordings ever made. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Youth and hope.......2003-03-05

Artists rarely declare their satisfaction with a performance and the fact that Rubinstein did so makes this recording all the more important. Chopin excelled in many formats for the piano but he is usually thought of as a miniaturist. No better example of this exists than this recording of the Mazurkas.

One must remember that the Mazurkas were originally Polish dances, thus their odd yet similar rhythms. They vary in both length and depth but each is a poignant poem, dedicated not only to friends but also, silently to his birthplace, Poland. He wears his patriotism on his sleeve - something unthinkable today - and emptied his sould into his music.

About the playing there is nothing much to add to the other reviewers. It seems as if Rubinstein gathered all his artistic energy for this recording and it is impossible to imagine one Mazurka standing alone. They MUST be heard as a group to get the true import of the music. Each idea is quickly explored and then completed, preparing the way for the next one. A few lengthen to several pages and they provide nice breaks in the quickly moving pace. For all the criticism of the performer's rhythmic style one can find no hint of affectation or exaggerated rubato with this set. This recording is perfection.

I love the Mazurkas and have played quite a number of them enthusiastically (and badly!) over the years. Two artists stand out for me; Fou Tsong and Rubinstein. The Fou Tsong has an immediate, haunting appeal but the more you try to play them yourself, the more you realise just what an achievement the Rubinstein performances were. With two or three exceptions he seems to explore every nuance of the music. It grows on you with each listening whilst the Fou Tsong, with its occasionally overdone delicacy, fades a little. Listen to the little Mazurka number 13, which can't quite decide if it is in C major or A minor. I bet you hold your breath whilst you listen to Rubinstein

5 out of 5 stars Superbly nuanced performances.......1999-09-19

Are these superbly nuanced performances Rubinstein's greatest Chopin recordings? David Hurwitz thinks so. Personally, I would vote for the Nocturnes, but the Mazurkas run them a close second. Wherever you rank them in the Rubinstein discography of Chopin (and I like them much better than his 30's recordings of the Mazurkas for EMI) this is imperishable and cherishable Chopin.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Emerson Quartet has made its first all-Haydn recording, featuring seven of his most famous quartets on two CDs. Presented chronologically, the program is arranged for utmost contrast of tonality, atmosphere, and character. The prevailing mood is joyous, as befits the occasion, though three quartets are in minor keys. The opening work, Op. 20, No. 5, is dark, brooding, and achingly beautiful. Its inner tension is released in passionate climaxes, its slow movement is serenely pastoral, its finale a double fugue. This is followed by Op. 33, No. 2, nicknamed "The Joke" for its finale, whose coda is punctuated by several "fake" endings: general pauses of increasing length designed to tempt the audience into premature applause. To make its full effect, this "joke" depends on watching the players sit in frozen silence. Also in minor are the dramatic Op. 76, No. 2, nicknamed "Fifths" for its opening theme, which contains the famous "Witches' Minuet," a fierce two-part canon between the upper and lower instruments, and Op. 74, No. 3, nicknamed "The Rider" for its galloping finale. Op. 64, No. 5, is called "The Lark" for its soaring beginning; the finale is a brilliant perpetual motion marathon. Op. 54, No. 1, and Op. 77, No. 1, radiate good cheer and sunshine. The Emerson, whose violinists alternate, plays all this with its customary meticulousness, polish, and ease. Some of the fast movements are surprisingly leisurely, and at times one could wish for more inwardness or abandon. A third, bonus disc taken from earlier Emerson recordings contains movements of eight quartets, from Mozart to Ives. --Edith Eisler

1 out of 5 stars Perfection at its Very Worst.......2005-01-09

If I rate this album with one star, it is to say something relative to other recordings and to the standard to which I hold the Emerson Quartet. In Haydn, where wit, joy, humor and vivaciousness are more important than in any other composer (?), the Emerson's polish works so incredibly against the works, that I cannot but dissuade a potential explorer of Haydn most urgently from getting this recording.

Upon first hearing it will sound fine enough... technically it is perfect, the sound is fine... but it will reveal itself (immediately in comparison - or else over time) as tedious, meticulous and missing the point. The Lindsay's give these quartets all the gusto they need... sadly, they are seldomly in tune. With the Quatour Mosaiques you might get the finest accounts available (historical instruments or not), and the Kodaly Quartet on Naxos is a budget option that deserves your ears and trust.

If a listener wants to experience the Emerson String Quartet at their best, late Beethoven, Shostakovich, Webern et al. offer far better opportunities than Haydn (and Schubert).

    5 out of 5 stars 3 DISCS ACTUALLY.......2004-11-16

The third is a set of individual movements by Mozart, Schubert, Dvorak, Bartok, Ives, Shostakovich, Webern and finally a sizzling performance of the fugue from Beethoven's third Rasumovsky. It's brilliant, so I don't know why they are being so coy about it.

The first thing that I commend strongly about this set of 7 Haydn quartets is the actual selection. They range in order of composition from one of the op 20's to the great op77 #1, and 3 of the 7 are in minor keys. I get a definitely serious feel to the Emersons' approach to all 7. Op 33 #2 'The Joke' is included, and for once the jokiness at the end is downplayed, to my great relief. Another aspect that interested me was the fairly moderate speeds they take in the finales to the first 4 numbers, getting distinctly livelier in the last 3. I find this extremely convincing -- the music in the earlier finales is slighter than in the later ones and to my ears it benefits from not being rushed. What I would have liked to find out from the liner notes is whether that, or something else entirely, was the Emersons' thinking, but the remarks are to a familiar pattern -- useful and informative background information, very little about the performances, and rather gushy 'chatty-learned' stuff on the music.

I would describe this as a really distinguished set. It ought to suit experienced listeners in search of new insights, and for new(er)comers the format has been quite brilliantly devised as an introduction to the string quartet repertory presenting the father of the genre in depth followed by glimpses of what his successors did with the heritage he left them. Recorded quality also excellent.

5 out of 5 stars String Quartet Delight.......2002-01-16

This tribute to Haydn is spectacular. Their playing is impeccable, with fine definition and movement. I especially enjoy their offering of Opus 33, The Joke. It is light and playful and bounces with liltiness.

This is truly refreshing music to listen to. The bonus CD of works by Mozart, Shostakovich, Dvorak, et al is wonderful as well. This finales in Beethoven's op. 59 for String Quartet.
    Magnificent!

Thanks Emerson for 25, may 25 more be yours and your fans!

I heard this recording on the classical station that I listen to.
I now have the CD's in my car and my son and I (he's 8) absolutely love this recording. It is so wonderful we feel like we are seeing the quartet in person. Bravo, Bravo. We will be giving this one as gifts for the Holidays.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply marvelous...........2001-10-30

I have grown old with the Emerson; they recently celebrated their twenty-fifth season with the Stanford University Lively Arts, and I have not missed one of those performances. This year they played four of the quartets from their Haydn Project. The audience was as thrilled as any listener of these CDs will be.

In addition to their extraordinary performance, the Emerson have chosen seven of Haydn's most delightful quartets, bound to rekindle the excitement of knowledgeable music lovers and to entice new listeners. The liner notes provide an introduction not only to Haydn but also to the string quartet as a form. I cannot think of a better introduction: for one who wants to learn but is timid, here is where to begin.

The bonus CD offers movements from other quartets that the Emerson often play as encores. What a joy!

    5 out of 5 stars Definitive Scarlatti.......2007-05-26

I've been a Scarlatti fan since I discovered the Ralph Kirkpatrick recordings on Columbia when I was in high school--some 40 years ago. Over the years I have played some of them on the piano and collected numerous recordings, performed on both harpsichord and piano. I first purchased Scott Ross's complete collection after sampling the 3-CD Scarlatti Anthologie and being pleased with what I heard. After listening to about a third of the 34 CDs on which the 555 sonatas are recorded I can say that Scott Ross's performances equal or exceed anything I've heard from any other performer on harpsichord. There are recordings by other performers I rate very highly--Wanda Landowska's characterful pre-WW II recordings and Andras Schiff's superb piano recordings of the sonatas come to mind--but Scott Ross has it all. Meticulous accuracy, a truly engaging sense of rhythm--so critical in bringing out the character of the sonatas, a superb sense of the Spanish idiom Scarlatti uses, elegant ornamentaion, a masterful selection of stops, and the wonderful recorded harpsichord sound all make this set a thoroughly satisfying musical experience for the Scarlatti lover. Bringing all of this quality to the formidable task of recording all of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas is a tremendous achievement and a true service to the music loving public. In addition to the pleasure of having such a treasure trove of great Scarlatti performances, the complete collection has afforded me the oppotunity to discover many elegant gems among Scarlatt's lesser known sonatas--the kind that stay in my head days after hearing them. That Ross died at the relatively early age of 38 was a real loss. If you're a Scarlatti fan, treat yourself to this complete collection. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing accomplishment.......2005-10-20

This recent re-release of Scott Ross's complete recordings of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas is truly a great a accomplishment. The 34 CDs contain all 555 sonatas. The vast majority are played by Ross on the harpsichord, or harpsichord's I should say. Four different harpsichords were used, one Italian and three French. While various groups of Sonatas might sound a bit different it doesn't take away from the experience at all.

And what an experience it is. Ross's harpsichord playing is bright and lively when required, relaxed and subdued at other times. While it's hard to imagine that Ross was able to become intimately familiar with 555 sonatas over the year it took to record them, his performances do not show any signs of boredom. The sonatas are overall focused and well performed.

In addition to the hundreds of harpsichord sonatas, there are also recordings of Scarlatti's five sonatas with string and woodwing accompaniment as well as his three organ sonatas. All keyboard parts are played by Ross.

The packaging of this set is very compact. Each CD is in a thick paper cover, the whole of the set in a single box. There is also a 255 page booklet that contains a short description of nearly every sonata. Additionally there is an interview with Ross from 1986.

This is a wonderful set for any fan of Scarlatti and Ross. And at the price, it would even be worth it for anyone who enjoys Baroque harpsichord music but isn't familiar with Scarlatti. I highly recommend this set.
