Anna Netrebko's second CD is even more impressive than her first. She still may not be an absolutely polished, finished artist, but she's working at it and presents here a very satisfying---even thrilling---program. She doesn't quite have the stature or insights for Verdi's Violetta yet, but aside from some smudged coloratura in low-lying passages she sings the first act scene quite well (capped with a well-placed, big E-flat). She's close to ideal in the Sonnambula and Puritani excerpts, where her girlishness is entirely right, her coloratura dazzling, and her ability to sound tearful really impressive. The Lucia Mad Scene (also notable here for its use of the glass harmonica for which it was composed in place of the usual flute) is quite wonderful, even if the runs are sometimes not as well-delineated as they should be. And although she's not vocally suited to Desdemona's Willow Song and Ave Maria, she does manage to darken her voice to fit the character and presents a very moving portrait. The CD ends with an utterly charming "O mio babbino caro." Artistry and everything else aside, her voice is just beautiful. Claudio Abbado's leadership is ideal. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
I am in love with Anna.......2007-05-15
Did you see her in the Met's big screen broadcast of I Puritani? Then you know what I mean. Here is a just stunningly, impossibly gorgeous woman with a voice of liquid fire and gold who can sing with passion and precision while she's bending over and crawling around on the floor! If she weren't real I would guess she was the invention of the overinflamed imagination of a heterosexual opera queen (if such a being exists).
If you love getting great voice, buy this.
simple stunning.......2007-05-10
having just found this young womans CD in our local speciality store I was transformed from the mundaine life to the peak of ecstasy with her wonderful voice and the intense colours created by her own intensity. Here is a woman who can fill the heart with words that are pure gold and like velvet on the mind ,a truly wonderful voice and a stunning person to go with it .Here at last is a worthy successor to Dame Joan and others who gave opera to the world ,now we have in Anna Netrebko someone to give the passion and drama of opera to a new audience with the fire and fun of the pleasure this style of music can give.It is great to at last have an opera singer of this caliber who is unafraid to be herself and to let her own warmth and passion come through LONG May she continue to be the standard for others to attain.May she never change her love of singing and life
Ok but not a bel canto singer.......2007-03-21
Anna Netrebko's I Puritani selections are way below the art and skill of Callas, Sills, Sutherland, Caballe, and Gencer. She has no passion, no trills, no high notes that are deep and rich. Her best is in the Russian repertoire and possibley some undemanding Mozart.
Her broadcast from the Met Live of the I Puritani was alright, but scooping, avoidance of repetitions, running through passages like a locomotive, and an ending that would have brought the wrath of most opera houses in the world..scooping again, and a tight awful sounding high note. The same tentativenes is also here on this CD.She should know this. Her beauty and acting and allure are what interest the masses, not the voice, which is forgiven everything.
Too bad; she could be a lovely Tatyana some day. Also too, the Traviata is not that great; Anna Moffo , Renee Fleming, M. Caballe, and of course Maria Callas..Listen to these and hear the difference.
Having It All.......2007-01-22
This is a remarkable CD by the current "it" soprano. Anna Netrebko has it all. She is a wonderful singer, and a beautiful woman. Any star on the rise, particularly one with this much physical beauty and commercial promise, will always fall victim to criticisms that are more or less trivial. Believe me, I get it. When I first saw Anna, I wanted to be judgemental. After all, maybe she was just another pretty face being pushed by a record company. Then I heard her "Sempre libera" and became a fan.
There are criticisms of her trill, or her lack of a trill. Renee Fleming doesn't have a trill, and she has been the acclaimed queen for some time. Because of Anna's trill issues, she's criticized as lacking something that a coloratura should have. Well, she's not a coloratura. A good bel canto singer does not have to be a coloratura. There are criticisms of Anna's repertoire choices. You know why she picked this interesting melange for this CD? Because these are difficult scenes and arias, and she can do them. The only aria I didn't think "fit" is the "O mio babbino caro". She does it well, I just can't figure out what it's doing on this CD.
The "La Traviata" scene that starts the CD is absolutely magnificent. She is a wonderful Violetta, and sings this demanding scene with panache. She does the high E-flat at the end. Of course, she was coached by Scotto on this aria. Nice coaching if you can get it. No less remarkable are her scenes from "La sonnambula" and "I puritani". Her "Qui la voce" was beautiful. To listen to that gorgeous singing, and only focus on whether or not she has a trill is to miss the point of the music. I can definitely see why the Met is giving her the "Puritani" this season. Her scenes from "Lucia di Lammermoor" were technically perfect, and her mad scene very well done. The "Otello" scenes were amazing, particularly the floated pianos and pianissimos in the "Ave Maria". Abbado and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra are wonderful collaborators.
Ignore the criticisms and buy this CD! You'll be glad that you did. Highly recommended.
Talented singer, but should she choose her reportoire better?.......2007-01-10
Anna Netrebko has an attractive voice and a pleasing personality in this recording. But her performance also raises some questions.
First, she has a Callas-like habit (not a great compliment) when she ups her volume on higher notes of producing a rather unpleasant sound. In "Sempre libera," from "La Traviata," this is manifest. I compare this with the silky smooth lyric voice of Anna Moffo, from the 1960s and 1970s, who essayed this same piece in a manner much more attractive to the ear. Second, I could not hear a single trill on this CD (although maybe I missed something). In the colorature/bel canto repertoire, this is not a trifle. A trill is a standard part of a coloratura soprano's armamentorium. In that, again, she is like Callas, who scarcely issued forth a trill. "Spargi d'amaro pianto" is one of the classic cabalettas for coloratura sopranos. Sung without trills, it is not very satisfying. Some who have recorded the pyrotechnics of the "Mad Scene" have only displayed adequate trills (e.g., Anna Moffo or Angela Gheorghiu). Others, of course, have deployed wondrous effects, such as Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills. Just so, the cabalettas in "La Sonnambula" and "I Puritani."
Certainly, Netrebko also exhibits considerable strengths. Other ornamentation is fine; she has an agile voice; she can hit all the notes, including the high ones. Her vocal sound is most attractive (outside the one example noted earlier of a certain harshness). Her singing in the pieces from "Otello" and "Gianni Schicchi" are very well done.
So, all in all, a nice CD, but one that does not seem to feature Anna Netrebko at her best.

suprising content.......2007-02-07
Cura is wonderful but the style on this recording was not at all to my taste, my husband's taste or to a hispanic family's taste who know more about the "bolero" style than we do. Unfortunately, we all hated it. It is a sort of a slow, slighly jazzy drawl of music that never grabbed any of us.
Totally Smitten (Hook, Line and Sinker!!!).......2003-07-05
I first heard Mr. Cura on a duet with Sarah Brightman (There For Me), and I said I have to have an album of this 'muy macho' guy. I'm not really a fan of opera music so I chose "Boleros" and can't help but swoon over this total stand-out of a guy. And his being so handsome is an added bonus. This album is a must-have for all hopeless romantics.
A Voice Of Pure Beauty!!!.......2003-01-17
First Off I Am NOT An Opera Buff!! I Don't Speak Spanish! But After Discovering Luis Miguel & Alejandro Fernandez I Fell In Love With These Songs, Based On That Love I Purchased This Cd And Have Become An Instant Fan Of Jose Cura!!! His Voice Is Glorious & He Sings These Songs With Such Passion & Tenderness That He Takes You Beyond This Earth And A Little Closer To BLISS!!! Please Buy This And Add Some Romance To Your Life!!!!
unusual but lovely venture.......2002-12-12
Folks, let me offer a word of piece. Jose Cura the tenor and Jose Cura the pop singer are like two different personalities. Yes, to those of us who heard him live in opera (and haven't heard his "Anhelo" CD) this comes as a surprise. After all, not a single high C (or B for that matter) makes a presence, and majority of the selections are sung in near-whisper manner. It's decidedly un-operatic.
But it's an interesting and lovely album of songs arranged in a soft jazz-like way, and Cura invests a lot of feeling into each of these. I listened to the album about 3 times before coming to appreciate it. Do likewise and you'll descover a totally new side to this remarkable artist.
Everyone's a critic.......2002-08-26
...
As for this CD, there is nothing to say other than FABULOUS!!!
By and far one of the best CD's I own and a most brilliant example of Mr. Curas' vocal and interprative talents.
While he does sound more baritonal than anything else, it is exactly that which sets this CD apart form any of Domingos' "pop" efforts....or any CD of contemporary nature by other Tenors i.e. Boccelli etc.
Granted, Mr. Cura avoids most high notes (the highest sung on any song is an A natural), but given the song selections and that this is a vocal Jazz CD, there really is no room nor need for any excessive Tenoral vocalizing.
If you like Jazz and want to hear a world class Tenor sing it, purchase this CD.
Unless you belong to the "If it's not Pavarotti, it's no good.." crowd, you're promised to enjoy this most recent effort by Mr. Cura immensely.

Wonderful Netrebko.......2007-07-15
Anna Netrebko is actually the best soprano on stage. She was born to sing and you can see that in her face; she enjoys to sing and you can feel it just listening her voice. I love her Amina because is dark and sounds a little bit sad. Just hope she could take her own time to rest; she is not a machine!!!

Customer Reviews:
Cotrubas is Great, but what's the hurry?.......2001-06-09
Cotrubas's performances are almost universally deemed "vulnerable" and no more so than here- her voice has a plaintive, sorrowful quality that really makes Violetta a tragic figure- not the fighter that is Callas, but very, very moving. Another reviewer has made a very telling comment calling Cotrubas's performance "Puccinian" meaning the frail heroine is doomed from the start- but I really think this is a major advantage here, so that even in the brightest parts of Act I, you hear desperation and fatalism in her voice (as opposed to other singers who make it so bubbly as to sound as flighty as The Merry Widow). I think the drawback here is Kleiber's speeds- yes, he creates a great deal of dramatic tension, and yes there are lots of places in Traviata for a singer to wallow self-indulgently, but I think his tempi are too fast and he never relaxes for a second: the wrenching preludio (both in Acts I and III) speeds by- the traditional rubato on the higher note at the end of the first phrase of "Addio del passato" is rushed over- "Parigi O cara" drives ahead without quarter... Perhaps Kleiber had been told to get the entire recording on the fewest number of discs possible; but did they have to cut the secord verse of "Addio del passato"?
In spite of this, I would still recommend at least the highlights disc (but be warned that Cotrubas and Milnes are wonderful in all parts in-between the arias and duets and you are really missing out of you don't hear them).
Interestingly- Deutsche Grammophon put out a highlights disc some time back which does have the same stuff listed on this disc- originally, they left out "Un di felice" in favor of much of the throw-away stuff from the very beginning of ActI -- what's up with that? The original also left off the big concertato at the end of Act II, one of the best Verdi ever wrote-- but it did have the Preludio for Act III as well as the heartbreaking and gorgeously sung arioso material at the start of Act III.
A great record.......2000-07-09
This record was my first contact with Opera and I have become a passionate amateur since. Ileana Cotrubas brings an outstanding Violetta: the sincerety and vulnerability that she puts into the charachter is truly moving. Also Sherril Milnes is impressive in his interpretation of Germont and it is pitty that this record does not include Violetta and Germont's duet 'pura siccome un angelo'. Whether you are a freshman to the world of opera or whether you have been an opera fan for a long time, this record will enchant you.

Album Description
Two Performances: (Philadelphia, Feb. 18, 1964; complete performance). Corelli, Curtis-Verna, M. Dunn, Bardelli, Giaiotti; Guadagno, cond.; Philadelphia Lyric Opera. Plus: La Gioconda (October 18, 1966; 71 mins. of highlights). Corelli, Tebaldi, M. Dunn, Chookasian, Colzani, Hecht; Guadagno, cond.; Philadelphia Lyric Opera . Booklet includes synopsis, biographies and an article by Steve Cohen about The Philadelphia Lyric Opera. (3 CDs)
Corelli sang Gioconda many times with the Met but never elsewhere%GâÂÂ"%@apart from these two Philadelphia performances. These are his only available Enzos, and this is their first-ever release. The CDs were made from tapes supplied by Steve Cohen, the official recording engineer for The Philadelphia Lyric Opera.
Corelli uses a mechanistic vocal method involving manipulating the position of the larynx. In dramatic passages he sings with his larynx lowered to the bottom of his neck, to give his voice maximum heft, core and brilliance. In lyric passages he repositions his larynx somewhat upward.
He sings caressingly in the love scenes with Dunn and with anguish in the third act ensemble. In both performances he is in wonderful voice and even interpolates a high C in Act I and another in Act IV. Above all, as in no other role, he expresses blind fury, in his confrontations with Curtis-Verna and Tebaldi.

A Blast From The Past: Corelli And Tebaldi in Gioconda.......2005-07-31
Where was this recording all my life ? Two of the most renowned soprano and tenor pair of the 50's, Renata Tebaldi and Franco Corelli sing their hearts out in full-blooded, passionate, fiery Italian in this powerful performance of La Gioconda. Ponchielli's La Gioconda is perhaps the most fiery, intense Italian opera in the repertoire.
I'm not much of a music expert per se, but this opera is, to me, a blend of verisimo opera (the vogue of the late 19th century and early 1900's) and Romantic Puccini-esque opera. Tebaldi and Corelli do justice to the lead roles and live up to their own hype. Further to singing with dramatic musicianship, they provide the work with beautiful tone, with the greatest example of how to sing in true Italian form- with deep sultry richness and vocal bravura. Very few tenors truly sing in the Italian manner, and the ones who did were old school- Mario Del Monaco, Franco Corelli and Giuseppe Di Stefano. Even fewer sopranos sang with Italian fire. Not even Callas had it. Rosa Ponselle and Leontyne Price had it and of course Renata Tebaldi. In this old recording, the sound is not perfect but has been digitally remastered from the old tapes and sounds fair and fresh. This is a rare recording in that it offers the same opera in two different performances. Both have Corelli singing the tenor lead, but the first has a no-name soprano in the lead soprano role. While she lacks the strength of La Tebaldi, that performance is blessed with mezzo-soprano Mignon Dunn. Mignon Dunn was one of the more illustrious sopranos of the Golden Age of the Met, and her voice is velvety, deep and dramatic as well. In addition, she was a very attractive woman herself. She immerses herself in her role with dramatic flair. Mignon Dunn should be in everyone operaphile's top mezzo soprano list. Whenever you can, look for other recordings of Mignon Dunn.
The second performance is that of Renata Tebaldi in the soprano role. She interprets the character with more vocal splendor and musical artistry. Callas sang La Gioconda and her "Suicidio!" is far more dramatic but Tebaldi holds her own because she is in fine vocal shape, with none of the whoops and wobble that Callas often used in her singing. Hers is a pure, clean, smooth, creamy, Italian sound. The fact that Tebaldi sang the same roles at the same time (the 50's) as Callas is what lead to the rumored rivalry between them. I frankly believe that there was no rivalry between them. Both artists were simply different in their approach on singing opera- Callas was ever the actress, willing to sound ugly and harsh for the purely dramatic effect in the textual passages of the arias while Tebaldi would rather sacrifice credibility in character in order to sound gorgeous. This same beauty vs dramatic effect was present in the "other" famous rivalry - Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills and in the tenor side Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavoratti. This performance is a must have if you're a Tebaldi fan. Tebaldi died around a year or two ago, and she is fondly remembered as a great soprano of the 20th century and her legacy lives on her recordings. Tebaldi and Corelli were on fire on stage, and they had really great chemistry - watch the filmed performance on DVD or VHS of their La Forza Del Destino of the 50's in order to see what I mean, or hear their recordings in which they sang together, among these a glorious Adrianna Lecrouvreur and Andrea Chenier. This is a terrific recording that ought to be more critically acclaimed.

Customer Reviews:
Elegant is as elegant does!.......2004-04-24
This the review that I wrote for OperaOnline.us: There is only one word to describe this compilation of varied works by soprano Kiri Te Kinawa: Elegant! From the cover to the selection of songs inside, to the way each selection contributes to and results in a perfect blend of orchestra and singer, nothing is out of place. I usually prefer CDs that are thematic and carry a mood throughout, and this offering by DECCA, bless them, will not disappoint those who share my sensitivity to mood. It doesn't hurt either that Kinawa's voice radiates control and smoothness that sweeps one up in defiance of gravity to a place somewhere betyween awe and gratitude, but that is exactly what occurs here. You listen to the melodic expressiveness of Beim Schlafengehen with the Wiener Philharmoniker and think it can't get any better, and then find it followed by Ave Maria with the Utah Symphony, followed by Pie Jesu with the Orchestre symphonique de Montreal, and it does get better. The chorals are pretty impressive as well, as in Nuns' Chorus and Climb Every Mountain. Consistently Kinawa's voice soothes and never presses even close to the edges of shrill. She is a soprano with depth and a cultured delivery that wraps every note in any range with the delicacy of a mother's loving embrace. It just doesn't get any better than this. Give this CD to someone you love, they'll appreciate it, with this one caveat: the second of the two disks is less moody and a little uneven in mood. Hold the second disc back.
