Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

Rhythms Del Mundo.......2007-07-15
It's a good idea and not bad for the effort. The songs while some work very well ,the others were just a good try . I can see what they were trying to do. Anyway it's for a good purpose
Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba.......2007-07-05
I love this CD. Every cut is good. I can clearly appreciate the original artist and the Latin beat at the same time. I am so pleased to have a CD that every cut is good and I don't have to stop what I am doing in the cafe to skip a cut when the player is on scramble.
Great Salsa/Pop Fusion CD.......2007-07-04
The fusion of well known pop artists (ie; U2, Coldplay, etc.) and Buena Vista Social Club totally works on this great CD.
Disappointing...buy something else.......2007-06-01
This is disappointing...a few of the remakes are ok. Some cuts are intolerably poor. The overal quality is poor and it is not as advertised.
Unique, fun CD-Rock and traditional tunes turned Latin.......2007-05-29
We love this CD and all of our guests who have heard it love it too. The latin version of Cold Play's "Clocks" seems like they should have recorded it that way from the start. You'll recognize all of the songs and enjoy the Spanish or rhymically-latin versions.

Very Catchy.......2007-07-23
Although way overplayed in Mexico like so many pop songs, "Me Muero" really caught my attention when I saw the music video with masked Mexican wrestlers. I thought it was crazy to have something like that in the video for a love song, but it really makes sense when you think about how she's saying the world is wrong (about the masked wrestler?).
Since buying the CD, all the songs, especially "Tu Peor Error," have really been growing on me. The other songs also add some great lyrics to think about such as the line in "Ahora Que Te Vas" where she says she will dream in black and white if he leaves or how he's left her no option but to tear off her skin and bear the pain in "Para No Decirte Adios." I also really liked "Que Fui Para Ti" because it showcases Natalia's amazing voice so well. Natalia....
The only problem I have with the CD is that most of the songs later in the disc start to sound the same. Perhaps I just haven't listened to it enough, but they just aren't as distinctive as the first few songs.
Pure talent, really good........2006-12-17
I really enjoy listening to this group because of several things. I really like the idea of the dramatic lyrics such as "no me dejaste otra opcion que arrancarme la piel y aguantar el dolor" (you didn't give me a choice but to tear my flesh and bear the pain) on "PARA NO DECIRTE ADIOS" or "ahora que te vas yo te guardo un sentimiento porque se que no es correcto dejar nuestra vida atras. Ahora que te vas, ahora que te veo marchar, antes debo confesarte que has dejado un plato sucio en tu lugar" (now that you're leaving I still keep a feeling beacuse I know that isn't right leave our lives behind. Now that you're leaving, now that I see you walk away, before that I must confess that you left a dirty dish on your place) on "AHORA QUE TE VAS" I really feel Natalia giving her best on lines like this. Then Natalia's voice is very good, she has a great voice and she performs flawlessly.
I really liked "FLORES DE ALQUILER" their previous album that made them known and gave them the international success that they they needed to continue with their career. "EL MUNDO SE EQUIVOCA" follows the same direction and has the same quality. The first single "TU PEOR ERROR" is a great song that had been a big success along Latin America, Spain and the U.S.
From my point of view the best songs are "TU PEOR ERROR", "AHORA QUE TE VAS", "PARA NO DECIRTE ADIOS", "NADA" and "COSA DE DOS". Check the album it is really very good.

Aniversario 100: Canciones Mexicanas Que Canta el Mundo.......2005-09-30
Great authentic Mariachi music by the best.
excellent !.......2005-05-20
This is one of the best albums of mariachi music I ever owned, I carry it with me to play it on the subway, and in my car. Most of the songs are popular, but it's still wonderful to listen. thier intereptation of Besame Mucho is still the best, and this song has been sang by almost everybody who can sing. I especially love La Malaguena, Las Mananitas and Cucurrucu Paloma. This CD is a delight, a must have for evert music fan.
mariachi lite.......2005-04-28
bought this on recommendation of other online reviewers...sorry i did...far too much orchestration for my tastes.
Excellent.......2003-12-09
If you are only going to own one CD of Mariachi music, then do your pocketbook a favor & purchase this CD. Its the best CD put out by the 4th Generation line-up, as it contains the best versions of most of the music interpreted here (La Malaguena, Son de la Negra, etc.,). As a side note, Vargas has issued several CDs since this one that have not made it through the distribution channels in the U.S. or Mexico! One of these albums, Penas-Desenganos y Amores, has the version of "El Cascabel" from the PBS special "Mariachi Spirit of Mexico" It is a real shame/loss if the greatest Mariachi cannot get distributed. You can listen to clips from that CD on the Marichi Vargas website www.mariachivargas.com.mx - if you enjoy it then please join me in sending an e-mail to Amazon customer service to request the CD.
A rich Mariachi experience........2002-07-05
Beautiful vocals backed by rich instrumental accompaniment. An authentic Mariachi experience. If I were to have only one CD of Mariachi music, this would be it.

If the White Stripes paved the runway for the take-off of the garage-rock revival, the Black Lips are the face-plant on the tarmac. For this live album, which the band promises is "going to be the best live record of all time," the Atlanta foursome mostly cull songs from both 2004's We Did Not Know the Forest Spirit Made the Flowers Grow and 2005's Let It Bloom. Despite its best efforts, though, the Lips' secret fifth member here is the highly audible crowd that assembled in Tijuana, Mexico, for the show and recording, augmenting the band's lo-fi, up-tempo blues with smashing bottles and waves of enthusiastic heckling. Musically, the standout track is "Buried Alive," the Eastern scale of its main riff giving way to a sing-along chorus with gusto to spare and no need for such technical nuisances as tuning. In fact, it takes an unbending confidence not to worry about being buried beneath a crowd that's much a part of its recording. But the Black Lips are nothing if not fearless, having weathered the early death of guitarist Ben Eberbaugh, three record labels (so far), and more punishing live sets than any but the most brave could endure. Brave new world, indeed. --Jason Kirk

Just Buy It........2007-03-01
Amazing energy. Everything else has been said...this album sounds better than all of their studio records and I'm not sure if that adds or takes away from it. Buried Alive is amazing. Wish it was longer.
WOW!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-28
Crazy show captured flawlessly with an unbelievably clear recording. Must have for any music fan! YOU NEED TO SEE THESE GUYS LIVE!!
Wow!.......2007-02-27
Who would have ever thought that a band would make a live record in Mexico that would sound cleaner & slicker than any of their studio albums? If you are even a casual fan of Black Lips, owning this record is a must. To a new listener, I think that this would be a good place to start that won't scare you off. These guys are good - REAL GOOD.
Buried (A)Live In Tijuana!.......2007-02-26
Wow--what a clean sound for a live album...yet still has the raw power for which Black Lips are known. Lion with Wings is eerie. I can't get Buried Alive out of my head; the chorus, with it's Peruvian-rock twist...left me craving for more.

Customer Reviews:
Good points far outweigh some minor deficiencies.......2005-11-29
This whole set is gorgeous (although the second cd gets a bit tediuos unless you really like early music), and Emma Kirkby has one the most beautiful, distinctive soprano voices I have ever heard, one can't help but like her, but hard-core critics beware, her intonation is not flawless, especially in the "Alleluia" of the "Nulla in Mundo" cycle, one can hear her go off on some of the high notes. Like I said, it's beautiful, but that does bother me personally every time I listen to that track. But buy it anyway.
More of Emma Please.......2004-01-02
I would have given this CD 5 stars if Emma Kirkby had sung all of the cantatas on Disc 2. Unfortunately, most of the cantatas on this disc are sung by Catherine Bott, who in my musically illiterate opinion, sounds more like a mezzo-soprano than a true soprano. Kirkby on the other hand is a legend in early music and brings her trademark "purity of sound" to this recording. The gorgeous duet she sings with Judith Nelson on disc 1 is alone worth the price of this set (that's probably a slight exaggeration, but it's pretty damn good anyway).
Getting away from Kirkby a sec, the Gloria on CD 1 is indeed glorious. The choral movements are sharp and lively, having that quality of all good choirs of sounding not quite of this earth. Listening to this CD after a couple of beers, you could be forgiven for thinking that your house has been invaded by cherubim and seraphim.
I'm not a huge fan of counter tenors (probably something to do with feeling threatened about my latent homosexuality or being emasculated) so I can't really provide any worthwhile comments about the Nisi Dominus which is a showcase of James Bowman's skills. Bowman has pretty impressive credentials, so I'm not about to get stuck into him. Suffice to say, I usually skip thru tracks 13-18 on disc 1.
amazingly beautiful.......2003-04-27
This CD is worth buying just for "Nulla in mundo pax sincera." This is one of the most beautiful vivaldi motets and is simply heavenly. I absoluterly love it!
Glorious cantatas on the second CD.......2002-06-14
For once the 5 stars are worth it. The choral works on disc 1 are masterful benchmark interpretations of the pick of Vivaldi's sacred output. What makes it a real bargain however is the second disc of cantatas - one of Emma Kirkby and Catherine Bott's finest achievements on the old L'Oiseau Lyre label. Couple this with full texts and an intelligent booklet. Wonderful!
a "must have".......2002-05-11
This is the ONLY version of "Gloria" you should own! The Choir of Christ Church is amazing and truly does justice to Vivaldi's work.

Desert Island Disc.......2002-12-07
If I had to pack for a desert island sojourn, this CD would definitely go in my luggage. Hot southern days, hot southern nights, passion, romance, joie de vivre, Flamenco Gipsy pop which burns...turn the heat on and dance with the Gipsy Kings.
Este Mundo.......2001-06-17
The Gipsy Kings prove to us again how brilliant they really are. Este Mundo is a very good CD containing great songs. Standout tracks are: Baila Me, Sin Ella, Habla Me, Oy, El Mauro and the beautiful No Volvere. The album also contains three great instrumental tracks. The best of them are Lagrimas and the slow Ternuras. Very recommended for any music fan.
Music you have to dance to.......2000-09-26
I find it impossible to sit still when I play this CD. Invariably, the rhythms have me up and dancing in seconds. And although my ability to understand Spanish is quite minimal, the vocalists present the message of each song so well and with great emotion that intuitively I find I understand the gyst of each song. If you like accoustic guitar, syncopated rhythms and vocalists that are obviously having wild fun, then don't pass up this CD.

I love listening to music where you can tell that the musicians are having a blast. This yummy CD often gets put in my player with the "repeat" function on. Every song is a winner. Highly highly recommended.
With this CD the Gipsy Kings began their reign of the 90's........1999-04-01
An incredible group effort from one of the greatest bands (in any language) of all time. The lead vocals are shared which gives the album a nice variety. The Kings are in top form here. Habla Me has to be the most beautiful song in their 100-plus song catalog.

Awesome CD.......2007-05-19
It is very much worth the price. It has 2 cds plus a dvd with 4 videos & an interview. Very talented artists. The best of the raggaeton genre!
The Best Duo Of All Time Hands Down!!!.......2006-08-06
This is the Deluxe Edition with the videos and their new songs.Especially one of the hottest songs ever "Pam Pam"is on the second CD.Wisin and Yandel are 10 levels ahead of the competition. They've crafted and carefully made all they're new songs to be true masterpices. They are the geniuses of club bangin' reggaeton, and with the best producers in reggaeton history helping them leave the rest of the competition in the dust.Definitely keep your ears on everything they make because it is HOT FIRE and NOBODY in the business can touch it.Right now the hot tracks are "El Telefono" on Hector El Bambino's CD ROMPE DISCOTEKA,"Atrevete" off the Chosen Few Part 2 CD. My favorite "Pam Pam".Wisin lyrics are off tha chain.Nobody comes close to the stuff he comes with.Maybe a close second Hector,or Yomo. But they work and feed so well off each other's vibes, voices, and flow. The Best Duo in the BIZ hands down,Wisin and Yandel!!!!

Jorge does it again!.......2006-11-30
Jorge Celedon is the biggest artist in vallenato at the moment and has been for the last few years. His new album is just as good as Juepa Je!... in fact it's better, he is experimenting even more.
What makes vallenato stand out for me are the gorgeous melodies of the songs. Jorge does beautiful melodies better than anyone else at the moment and it's why he is king.
Also the accordion by Jimmy Zambrano is gorgeous and he plays beautifully.
Celedon is also one of the few vallenato artists who have crossed over and has a fan base in non-vallenato circles as well. He is one of the biggest artists in Colombia at the moment. His first single from this album "Todo No Puede LLamarse Amor" is a duet with salsero Victor Manuelle and it's currently sitting at No 2 on the Colombian singles chart.
I also really love the ballads El Que Todo Por Ti Arriesgo, Todo Por Nada (he has plenty of string backing on this one), and Mi Poema. Mi Poema also has a bonus Acoustic version (with only Jorge and a piano) which is beautiful and shows just how beautiful these melodies are.
I recommend this album to all latinos regardless of what music you prefer. There is too much good latin music from all over Latin America to be restricting yourself. I am an Australian Spanish/Peruvian and love my musica de Latino America.
If you love Carlos Vives or Fonseca, then I think you will like this album. Celedon is a more purist form of vallenato than the before-mentioned two. Also while they concentrate on more up-tempo numbers Celedon does more slower tempo numbers.
PS: I don't know why they have the album as being a live album... it is not a live album at all... it is a studio album.

Focus on the Recordings.......2007-07-23
I've made this small review of the Vivaldi Masterworks set because it is SO difficult to find a review of such a big collection.
The price is killer and you HAVE to buy it, but be warned: these are not the best recordings, you get what you pay for.
First of all, I'm not a Vivaldi expert, but I've heard his compositions throughout my life in so many different places and recordings and have a vague idea of how some have to be played. Secondly, I'm not a classical music connoisseur, but I love it and have over 300 discs of various composers and styles. Third, I know what a good audio recording should sound like and this will influence my critique of some discs in the collection. Finally, it's easy to get lost among all the tracks contained, so in some cases I will give you my favorite tracks in a disc.
I'm sorry, but I've only reached disc 20 of the box-set, as I listen to more this review will be expanded.
DISC 1:
Why would you use an AAD recording as a first impression for a 40 disc box-set and for the "Four Seasons", which is probably Vivaldi's best know work. The concertos are played enthusiastically, but lack any additional virtuosity to put it ahead of other much better recordings out there.
DISC 2:
Same as DISC 1, played and recorded by the same people.
DISC 3:
The pieces in this disc are VERY well played, nonetheless, you can hear heavy breathing from the soloist which can be a bit annoying.
DISC 4:
Very well performed as well, heavy breathing is less present.
DISC 5:
A very good recording, excellent execution by the hapsichord and good by the recorder.
Tracks 4, 6, 7 and the whole "La Notte" are extraordinary.
DISC 6:
Exquisitely recorded and performed by the Budapest Strings.
DISC 7:
Marvelous performance on the whole disc.
Tracks 22 & 24 are non-plus-ultra.
DISC 8:
Great performance too.
Suggested tracks: 7, 12, 15, 24
DISC 9:
To have an original baroque organ playing is a plus.
Solo strings are lacking in quality (for example: tracks 6 & 7).
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 8, 15
DISC 10:
Despite being and ADD recording, the quality is fairly good. The cello is very well played.
Suggested tracks: 3, 4, 12
Excellent track: 13
DISC 11:
Same musical group and soloist as DISC 10. The contrabass is extremely distorted sometimes, and if you take into consideration that this is an ADD recording, it can get pretty bad. Some background noise is perceived.
Suggested tracks: 3, 6, 9
DISC 12:
The compositions are somewhat boring, either way the performance is plain decent.
Suggested tracks: 10, 12
DISC 13:
Good performance and sound quality.
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 6, 7
Excellent track: 12
DISC 14:
Good performance and sound quality too.
Suggested tracks: 10, 14, 16
Excellent track: 5
DISC 15:
Badly mixed, the basoon is blocking the whole ensamble by being in the foreground.
The playing precision is lacking.
An AWEFUL thing about this recording is that you can hear the basson key-sticking with the instrument and the saliva. It's horrible.
Such a pity, the sound of the basson with other instruments can be pretty interesting.
DISC 16:
Violins sound a bit off tempo.
Suggested tracks: 4, 8
DISC 17:
Good sound quality and performance.
Suggested tracks: 1, 7, 9
DISC 18:
Despite being an old recording, it is a very welcome one.
The performance is very well above par. Tempo is fantastic.
The quality of the recording could have been better due to some string plucking that is heard and which can become bothersome.
These are some of Vivaldi's best know tunes.
Suggested tracks: 4, 6, 13
Excellent tracks: 1, 3
DISC 19:
Lively recording.
Track 6 is the same piece found in another disc in the collection, but with a better performance.
DISC 20:
By now you've heard all of this pieces before in the other discs. Nothing new here, nor better.
This is a fantastic deal!.......2007-02-25
If you are a fan at all of the Four Seasons you should love this music. I will admit right now that I am a classical music fan. I don't write or perform it. I am a novice listener. I have never taken any music lessons(though I am leaning in that direction) and certainly have not gone through any university music training. I started out in rock and roll but found classical as I got older and fell in love with it a few years ago.
With that context in mind I do hope I am able to recognize quality and this work is of the highest. It helps when you are starting with good ingredients in the first place. You can't bake great bread without great ingredients and Vivaldi's music library has some of the greatest musical ingredients of the last 300 years. They are very much the foundation for modern western culture and music. His talent is woven through what we are
The first 26 CDs are instrumental starting with the four seasons and working through many of the Master's many popular works. I will admit the four seasons are not the best interpretation I have heard but it is definitely acceptable. The rest of the music shows us many facets of the Baroque style and you can see themes emerging through some of the pieces that give us a 'fingerprint' of Vivaldi's style and the parameters of the stylistic leanings of the genre at the time. If you want to immerse yourself in 18th century music this is your chance
This music would be ideal for someone who owns a store and is looking for background music. With over 26 CDs of instrumental music alone you could have those constantly looping and you'd probably never get bored of them(OK I may be stretching it a little there). The reason is that the music does not leave a bad 'aftertaste' in your mind. It fits into the background as easily and naturally as it is to listen to it consciously in the foreground. If you are a fan of classical Baroque you don't usually need to be in the mood for this, it will adjust your mood to itself and Vivaldi's music is almost always of an uplifting sort if this collection is any indication. If you want something to listen to at your job 8 hours per day this is good for the mind and it would take you over a week to get through it if you listened to it every minute of every work day. You will also work without the worry of the music distracting your concentration. I find it enhances it when I'm working. I don't know how well this would work on school kids but teachers might want to try playing this during school time. You may create a few geniuses, we certainly could use more!
If you are looking for something to ease your sleep and oil your dreams I have put these CD's on in the background. Not only can I easily fall asleep when they are playing quietly in the background but it helps you sleep and you wake up in a very pleasant atmosphere if the music is still playing quietly when you wake(you probably would need to rip them to your MP3 player to do that). It's like napping at a classical music concert without the worry of being nudged by your spouse or offending the other concert goers with your snoring. That will be quite a unique experience for you and possibly give you some real sweet dreams. It has for me
So to wrap it up this is very intelligent, uplifting music that is great for your mind and your soul. It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the Four Seasons and the Baroque genre in my novice classical music fan's opinion
Excellent, Broad Selection.......2007-01-25
This 40-cd collection affords me a rare pleasure almost daily: the thrill of hearing something new by Vivaldi. Despite my best efforts over the years, I've managed to miss hearing a lot of great works by the master. Listening to a single CD now and then, catching tunes on the radio... you can't possibly get a comprehensive understanding of Vivaldi's output that way.
But when you work your way systematically from CD 1 through 40, you're sure to find many pleasant surprises. I've been skipping through everything I already know -- in some cases, it has only taken me about a minute to get through a whole CD (first 3 seconds of each track is usually enough). But then I stop and listen carefully three or four times to anything that's new.
Ah, what a pleasure. I've already acquired some new favorites. And some old standbys have proved even more rewarding, e.g. at first I thought RV 127 (CD 7, tracks 10-12) was performed too slowly (Naxos No: 8.553742 is much faster), but now I'm not sure; maybe it's BETTER that way! I can't recommend this set highly enough.
$70....when was this???.......2006-11-25
Wish the cost was $70 now. Guess the record producer (or Amazon) got tired of making less than $2 per CD.
$70/40... you do the math........2006-04-07
No, I don't own this collection...yet. However, the price of the collection compels me to review it beforehand. Never have I seen such a complete collection of Vivaldi compositions at such an incredibly low price. At $1.75 dollars a CD, the record producer (Brilliant Classics) isn't making much of a profit. The compilation pulls some of its works from DG Achiv Produktion's vault (see Standage), such as the violin concertos, as well as from unknown producers (the Poland Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra is heavily featured). The collection is so complete that it is academic, and I would not be surprised if music libraries quickly emptied it from Amazon's shelves. The collection is simply worth it for the incredible price (English Concert's recording of the violin concertos cost nearly 30 bucks, and is exactly featured here). Overall, the price alone makes this collection exceptionally attractive, and the ensembles featured aren't bad either.
