Customer Reviews:
Retro Brazil.......2005-10-03
These tunes take you to a different time and place yet still feel contemporary. If you are interested in the sounds of Brazil, Sergio Mendes definitely provides plenty of material. So sit down or stand with the beautiful people, make some caparinias, enjoy the conversation, and let Sergio Mendes take you away.
Oh yes, have someone else start the barbeque!
Great Brazilian Jazz / Great Collectible.......2005-09-08
I have to totally disagree with the previous reviewer; this 3CD compilation is an absolute knock out for those who really know.
1) First of all, these three CDs separately have been Out Of Print for ages and are almost impossible to get; but here you have them at a fantastic affordable price.
2) Second, for those who really know Sergio Mendes' work and have a collection of his, this compilation is a true treasure; and...
3)Third, Sergio's Music around that time was already in high demand, and here you have collaborations with people like Wanda Sah, Oscar Castro-Neves, Gerry Mulligan, Laudir de Oliveira, Dave Grusin, Tom Scott, John Pisano, Joao Donato, Moacir Santos, Dom Um Romao and Pele among many more.
Only for educated ears and educated and serious collectors, period.
save your money.......2005-08-20
This album is junk. One or two good tunes, the rest junk. Save your money!
three unrelated albums.......2002-07-31
Except for Sergio's presence, these three albums have little in common. Most enjoyable for me is the live performance by Brasil '65, which is just plain, honest music. The Pele soundtrack is, well, a soundtrack and full of Hollywood mush. By the time we get to "My Favorite Things," Sergio's spare piano is lost in a soup of arrangement styles that were popular in the '60s. Listen to it as a '60s setpiece. Once in awhile Sergio comes up for air and it's bliss, but this has not aged well and wasn't worth much when it was new 35 years ago, IMHO. Buy "Beat of Brazil" and "Swinger from Rio" to hear the real Sergio.
Soundtrack for the Swinging Sixties.......2001-09-23
This 3-LP compilation is a must-have for fans of Mendes, as well as those who love music with a Latin flair. Disc One consists of, as the title suggests, a live performance at San Francisco's El Matador club and the soundtrack to a film about fellow Brazilian the legendary soccer great Pele. Both exhibit Mendes masterful piano playing and superb vocals from the members of Brasil '65, '66, '67, respectively. These long out-of-print releases are a welcome addition to any music-lovers' collection.
But, it is disc two, "Sergio Mendes' Favorite Things" that is the real find. Featuring Mendes's trademark arrangements, the disc soars, as it is an instrumental journey into the sultry music that typified the decade. Highlights are "My Favorite Things, " "I Say a Little Prayer," the Dionne Warwick hit, "Comin' Home Baby," and "Boa Palavra (The Good Word)."
Should Mike Myers decide to have his alter-ego "Austin Powers" take another trip back to groovy days of the late 60's, this will be the perfect music with which he can travel.

Pianist Vince Guaraldi is best known for his musical accompaniment to Charles Schulz's Peanuts cartoons, but he was also a successful jazz pianist until his death in 1976. Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete was a star in the bossa nova movement of the '60s who fell into obscurity before being embraced by the New Age crowd in the '80s. This reissue combines the pair's first collaboration, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete and Friends (from 1963), and their third and final collaboration, Live at El Matador (from 1966), on one 73-minute disc. Their light mix of bossa nova and bop jazz landed these songs in lounges across America back in the day--now they provide a snapshot of the '60s club scene as well as a greater spotlight on Sete's style, which gets generous attention on the fantastic '66 date, Bola Sete at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Guaraldi fans used to hearing his trio will find Sete's guitar to be a fine addition to the pianist's sound. Two sides of the same coin, the playing on Friends is tighter and moodier, while the live album shows the two stretching out in the traditional jazz sense. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
A Mixed Bag.......2002-07-20
"Vince & Bola" combines two LPs ("Vince Guaraldi, Bola Sete & Friends" and "Live at El Matador") on one CD. While economical, the combination is musically unfortunate. "...& Friends" is one of Guaraldi's weaker recordings; his lively keyboard work is often overwhelmed by the easy-listening samba sound. By contrast, "El Matador" is a very strong live recording, featuring live interpretations of "Black Orpheus" classics, along with Guaraldi's poignant take on the Beatles' "I'm a Loser."
In other words, buy this disc for the second half, but you may fall asleep during the first.
This Stuff is Fun!!!!.......2001-02-14
If you enjoy well played Bossa Nova get this one and the sound is very good, plus you get to hear Vince "if your're not familiar with his music " from the side door...
Smooth, cool, romantic jazz-samba magic!.......2000-10-20
This is a very nice CD which combines two of the three albums Vince and Bola recorded together. The first five tracks were done in the studio with the remaining tracks being recorded live. I was somewhat disappointed that Bola only appears in two of the last six tracks, but pleased, none-the-less, being a Vince Guaraldi fan.
Fans of the Vince Guaraldi trio will not be disappointed by the addition of Bola's guitar to Vince's piano and the trio's bass and drums. Vince and Bola shine brilliantly whether serving as accompanists to one another or as soloists. The quartet as a whole are smooth, cool and tight with nothing feeling out of place. The live tracks tend to showcase Vince and Bola's excellent solo skills more than the studio tracks.
It's difficult for me to pick a favorite selection. I'd have to say the first five tracks. I like to keep this one close by when I'm ready to unwind. Check it out, throw it on, kick back and relax. This CD is as refreshing as a cool summer breeze.

Beautiful album.......2000-10-11
This is my favorite recording by Kevin Hays. Kevin Hays is a phenomenal pianist, composer and arranger. The compositions and arrangements are beautiful. An inspiring album. Highly recommended.
SNAKE EYES.......2000-09-20
This CD is a welcome reissue of Kevin Hays' debut album as a leader, which was originally issued in Japan only by the Jazz City-label. Still in his early twenties at the time of this recording, Hays called up 3 other great young musicians, who were all still in the early stages of their careers : Steve Wilson on alto & soprano sax, Scott Colley on bass and Bill Stewart on drums. Rounding out the group on 4 tracks is tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, who was on the brink of making a major comeback as a leader in his own right, and seemed to spend the late 1980's and early 1990's showing up on other people's albums. Four originals by Hays and one by Wilson are added to two standards (Coltrane's "Like Sonny" and the less-covered "The good life" by Sasha Distel and Jack Reardon). One offbeat choice is "Nobilissima Visione" by 20th century composer Paul Hindemith, which is given a very jazzy workover, quite obscuring its origins. (Hays would later record another Hindemith composition "Interlude" on "Seventh sense", his first album for Blue Note.) Even at this early stage in his career, Kevin Hays delivers a great recording of contemporary jazz, more often than not playing a modest role behind and with the others members of the band. A solid group-effort !
....snap this up before it disappears.........2000-08-28
...like Kevin Hays' stellar 1994 debut with Blue Note, El Matador is a gem that belongs in every serious jazz fans' collection. If you are looking for something pure; music that is as real and honest as it gets, you cannot go wrong purchasing this album. Kevin Hays is about the only modern artist, in my opinion, that is able to breathe new life into standards, as well as compose tunes which are entirely worthy of being 'cannonized' into 'standard repretoir' .... I don't care what the critics say, this man is Jazz --period.

Customer Reviews:
Thier difinitive recording as of yet..........2004-07-06
Of all the terrific recordings the Paladins have recoreded, this may be the difinitive one, as of today. Thier recordings in general all do sound the same. So you can literally go to thier section at the record store close your eyes and grab something, and be happy with whatever it is. However this cd shows a bit more growth than previous albums, and more maturity. The vocals have gotten stronger, and more appealing, and guitar solos more intricate, the slap bass never sounded better, and the drums just glide smoothly. A great set of fun rockabilly, mixed with some exotic Spainish sounds, as well as western swing/honky tonk, and a HUGE dose of downbeat in rockin' blues! A+++
The difinitive blues and rock roots band.......2004-07-05
This band plays as though the year were 1955, and blues and rockabilly are popular on the jukeboxes. This is honky tonkin' juke joint music, taht is straight up rockabilly rock'n'roll, with jump blues and honky tonk influences. Roots music at it's best. A fun cd, full of great songs and powerful playing.
This is my favorite rockabilly cd by the Paladins.......2004-07-03
I like all the cd's I've heard by them, but thsi one is really special, it has a jazziness that others didn't, a sense of swing, blues, hillbilly and rock'n'roll added to the rockabilly roots mix. A fun cd tah twill be enjoyed by all who like good time 50's juke jount music.
Like this is totally amazing dude.......2004-07-03
Dude liek thsi is totally awesome man. I love this cd, I bring it down to the San Clemente pier and blast it on my boom box, on the beach while I'm catchin' waves and surfin' dude. This is like totally rockabilyl gone wild and fun dude, like a cross between Dwight Yokam and Elvis Pressley. It liek totally rocks and swings dude. awesome totally awesome cd
A fine work of art by a great rockabilly roots'n'blues trio.......2004-07-03
From the slap bass to the rockin' guitar riffs, this rockabilly roots trio hits the spot! They play authentic 1950's sounding rockabilly with touches of rockin' blues along the lines of John Lee Hooker, and rockabilyl along the lines of Sleepy LaBeef. They also play some hillbilly swing, and they are a hard driving energetic band tah tjive dancers will want to go out of thier way to see live and jive to. This cd is a great example of how a roots rockabilly band should sound, if you like the Blasters, you will also really enjoy this cd!

Customer Reviews:
Japan, how is it you allways get the coolest stuff?.......2000-09-07
How is it that Japan would end up with a 1966 recording of a South American artist, live in San Fransisco? I guess there really isn't a good answer to that question, except to just shrug, and import the darn thing. The pure essence of Sergio Mendes and Brasil 65 is captured beautifully on this collection of tracks recorded in the famed "El Matador." From the random china clang, to the spare truck driving by outside, every subtle nuance has been preserved... oh along with some pretty amazing musical moments. In Person at El Matador shines with gorgeous Brazillian/Jazz arangements by Sergio, and exotic vocals by Wanda De Sah... A perfect addition to any cocktail music list, even if the import price eats into your bar tab a bit!
