Lively and cheerful!.......2002-11-29
This gem of a CD is the South American counterpart to Chatham Baroque's other release of Hispanic music, "Espanoleta!". "Sol y Sombra", which translates as "Sun and Shade", not only contains instrumental music from the accomplished quartet of string players, but also features the spirited, operatic voice of soprano Carol Ann Allred. Guest percussionist Danny Mallon spices things up with frequent accompaniments of castanets, tambourine and drum. Of all Chatham Baroque's excellent releases, I find this recording, along with "Espanoleta!", to be the most fun to listen to. For more early Hispanic music from the New World, try "Missa Mexicana" by Andrew Lawrence-King and the Harp Consort, and "El Milagro de Guadalupe" by Savae.
shadows dancing on the walls.......2001-04-21
I've been listening to my copy of "Sol y Sombra" by the Chatham Baroque all night...
It is one heck of a recording. Sun and Shade indeed! This collection of secular and sacred music from the Latin American baroque period is outstanding.
This is music that one can slip into like a trustworthy pair of old slippers. "Sol y Sombra" is worth meditating upon; but at the same time is the kind of music one can play in the background with the repeat button on for hours as you converse late into the night with Good friends.
Psalm 68:25 says: "The singers went on, the musicians after them, In the midst of the maidens beating tambourines." I imagine the same kind of scene here...shadows dancing on the walls--cast there by the firelight...the alternately reflective and then lively music driving them on.
The playing and singing are lovely. Carol Ann Allred joins Custer LaRue in my pantheon of favorite singers on the Dorian label.
This the music of a people that was moved by the presence of God in the midst of all their imperfections. I can feel it...so will you.
"Bless God in the congregations, Even the LORD, you who are of the fountain of Israel." (Psalm 68:26)
Get a copy of "Sol y Sombra" and see for yourself.
VERY GOOD INTERPRETATIONS.......2000-04-12
GOOD QUALITY, PRETTY SOUND ...BUT A LITTLE CONFUSED MIX OF PERIODS AND COMPOSERS...DESPITE ALL, IT IS GOOD TO HAVE IN YOUR BAROQUE COLLECTION
Sensuous, soulful, spirited..........1999-08-22
Sensuous, soulful, and spirited are not qualities that I usually associate with baroque music. This recording by Chatham Baroque is an amazingly refreshing example of baroque at it's best. This is the best CD I've bought this year!

Lo mejor del barroco latinoamericano.......2000-09-18
In this Dorian recording we hear music by Latin-American composers from South America(Colombia,Venezuela,Peru, and Bolivia) and one Portuguesse composer who worked in Puebla,Mexico....All music after track #10 are christmas carols of the period, two of these carols are anonymous... track #13 was composed by Juan Perez de Bocanegra in Peru, is a hymn in Quechua (The language of the Incas)....Tracks nos. 16,17 and 18 are by Gaspar Fernandes, the manuscript for most of this music were found in Puebla,Mexico...Track #16 is in one of many dialects found in the new world. Tracks nos. 17 and 18 are of a form of popular music at the time, known as 'negrito', this is music that was written for performance by African slaves, because they are in a "broken-down" Spanish, as it was spoken by the african slaves, all three of this villancicos are christmas carols, and I think that this practice was done to make easier the conversions of natives and Africans to christianity....So here in this recording we have a little of the very best of the baroque music in a new world.....The Camerata Renacentista de Caracas do a very good job and the instrumentation is wonderful... I still ask my self this quiestion at times:How much music is still hidden in monasteries an cathedrals in Latin-America???? How many composers might be there be that we still know nothing about them, or their music???????

A sample of Lorca's treasures.......2005-01-25
Germaine Montero's acting career started in a theater in Madrid, in the '30s, under the direction of none other than Frederico Garcia Lorca. In France, she first became known through her interpretations of Spanish songs, but her powerful voice also sang the French poets, such as Pierre Mac Orlan, Jacques Prevert, Joseph Kosma (Autumn Leaves), and Leo Ferré, as well as the classics of the French repertoire. On the stage, she interpreted Claudel, Pirandello and Bertold Brecht. She also appeared in many films. Montero's deep, remarkable voice, full of emotions, interprets with feelings and intelligence the beautiful lyrics of the great poet Frederico Garcia Lorca. I still have an old LP, which I purchased in the '50s, when I was fifteen, which I still play often although, by now, as you can imagine, it has seen better days. The same set of poems, with the beautiful guitar accompaniment, was published in the late '90s, but unfortunately is out of print and otherwise unavailable, but I am still hoping...
April 2005. Hurrah! I found one copy! But I'll still keep my old, scratched-up 33 rpm LP, for nostalgia sake .
Spoken Spanish Poetry.......2002-05-15
The poetry of Garcia Lorca is classic and well known as being among the greatest of the century. The reading by Germaine Montero is what makes this CD truly exceptional. Her voice and timing seem like the only possible interpretation of the poetry. For anyone who loves Spanish literature or who wants to perfect their Spanish, this is a gem.
