Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-04-29
We bought this CD in anticipation of our Italian Wedding, but it was disappointing. Songs were much too "50s" with instrumentation and presentation. Ironically, there are better and more upbeat versions of "That's Amore" out there than Dean's, in our humble opinion. Wouldn't recommend, at least not for an Italian wedding.
Could have found all these in the local library.......2007-03-07
I was looking for a fun CD for my daughter's wedding. I think I bought every CD on [...] that I thought would work. This CD certainly did not. It was full of the old standards, some of them acceptable but most of them hokey and reflecting the era they were recorded in (the '50s). Most people don't know you can go to the library for FREE recordings of these old songs. The marketers just slap together a bunch of old melodies and make a fortune on their sale, under some package. Since I purchased around 25 CDs for my daughter's wedding, let me tell you I know what I am taling about. I could have gone to the library to get these old renditions without spending [...] bucks. I can't believe they are still selling these compilations of Dean Martin and Lou Monte, etc. We've heard it all already!!! Save your money.
A Blast Into My Italian Past!.......2007-02-17
Anyone who comes from a large Italian family (or wishes they belong to one) should own this CD. The songs bring me back to my past when Mama fried meatballs for Sunday afternoon dinner for the family (and then some). Some of the songs make you cry like a baby ("Mama" by Connie Francis) and others make you laugh until your sides hurt ("Eh, Cumpari" by Julius LaRosa). My entire family heard this CD and ordered it immediately from Amazon. You should, too.

Just what I expected!.......2007-01-05
This is a great CD with some good oldies. Bought it for a couple of the included titles but liked all others. Worth buying if you like italian flavored oldies.
Not Italian... ok but not that great.......2006-01-05
Based on those other reviews, I bought this CD. And well.. I guess I expected more. So listen closely to the clips before you buy this CD. I won't be returning it but I don't think I'll be listening to it all that much either.

Can't get that song out of my head..........2007-07-09
I've been trying to find this band for the longest time. I've heard the song "Love Plus One" several times, and could never figure out which band was behind it. But, no more am I lost! I have found the band behind the song and I'm happy to say that...I LOVE THIS BAND! I love all 80s music. However, I'd never heard of this band, and the songs on this disc just makes me happy. Their stuff is classic! :) The music is fun, funky, poppy and flavored with that '80s sound' galore. This album is definitely a must have for any 80s music buff!
More Like This, Please!.......2007-04-23
Haircut 100 utilized horns like nothing I've heard in pop music before or since, and they gave the world this unique and brassy record before their star set forever into obscurity.
Their only hit isn't a very good indicator of what the rest of 'Pelican West' is like; it's inescapably catchy but doesn't have the lavish horn-driven sound of the rest of the cuts. Not that I'm criticizing; if I were in a band I would want recognition and riches as well! It is unfortunate that so many misguided snobs equate 'Success' with 'Selling Out', and I would hate to be misunderstood to be saying that "Love Plus One' is inferior because it succeeded so well. Should you decide to purchase this CD, you will be delighted to discover that it is filler-free, original, and brimming with true creativity.
The wry humor doesn't hurt, either. "When will life become a major film?" When, indeed? If you missed this the first time around do yourself a favor and pick it up now.
Lost Classic.......2007-03-13
the first time i heard haircut 100 was in the summer of 1982.How laid back everything and everyone was in those days, and this album fit right in to that carefree attitude everyone seemed to have. You heard haircut 100 everywhere,on the beach, blasting out of car windows, blaring out of bars and nightclubs, everyone had this album.I will classify this album as pure escapism. When the world of today starts shattering your nerves, throw haircut 100s Pelican West in your car stereo roll down the windows, and let your cares fly right out the window,YOU WILL GET HOOKED!!!!!
Classic Pop Music!.......2007-01-15
This is the kind of album you listen to when you want a nice, friendly pick-me-up. It is infectious pop music at it's best. Even now, decades after it's release, it has a freshness that jumps out of your speakers. A classic for the ages!
Possibly the greatest New Wave album out there........2006-06-04
I'm a hardcore Duran Duran fan. I breathe Depeche mode. I can't last a day without listening to New Order's 'Technique'. So for an 80s fanatic like me to call Haircut 100's album 'Pelican West' the greatest New Wave album out there is quite bizzare. I guarantee you, my friend, give this album a listen and you won't soon forget Nick Heyward and Haircut 100.
The album (and the band) is known for two songs in particular; 'Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)' and 'Love Plus One'. But there's so much more to this album. The depth of this album is quite phenomenal, to say the least. The marimba on Love Plus one, the flawless arrangement on Lemon Firebrigade, and the electric piano in Marine Boy all add up to one beautiful soundscape the enters one ear and doesn't come out the other. No, it stays with you the whole rest of your life. Now, I'm not old enough to have been there when this band first came out. I'm not even old enough to have seen them break up! But I know good music. This whole album screams 'Beach Music'. Buy this album and please don't skip a track. You need to witness the journey fold out for yourself.

Playing off of Elvis Presley's 1959 album 50 Million Elvis Presley Fans Can't Be Wrong, right down to the gold-lame suits the quartet dons on the cover, stalwart rockers Bon Jovi make a strong case that they're one of the true populist bands of their era with a box set that serves up dozens of previously unheard and seldom heard offerings. Designed as a heaping 20-year anniversary feast for insatiable fans, the four-disc/bonus DVD collection is surprisingly vital and consistent, considering that just about everything included was initially either rejected or related to B-sides and soundtracks. The high quality of these castoffs is attributable to the band's habit of preparing dozens of tracks for each album and cutting loose strong compositions that didn't fit with the theme of the completed product. Thus, some stylistic stretches were left in the vaults (check out the Southside Johnny-style r&b of "Love Ain't Nothing But a Four Letter Word"). Bon Jovi fans will find be delighted by this collection, and even skeptics may find themselves reconsidering these Jersey survivors. --Steven Stolder

Yes, they can be. They are........2007-01-21
For fans, I suppose this would be a rather big delight; for non-fans, it's nothing that will turn you on to the band from Jersey. They had some okay, cheesy hits in the '80s - but listening to some of their modern songs from this collection proves how completely out of touch they are nowadays.
For any Jovi fan..........2007-01-04
How can you not buy this box set? Enough said.

APOLLO 100.......2007-02-16
I originally purchased the LP version of this record way back when. With the coming of CD's I wanted to upgrade this record to cd but could not find it anywhere. With the help of some computer literate people we found it on Amazon.com. I am thrlled to add this to my collection. I will definitely use Amazon.com when looking to upgrade future records. The CD has every song on the LP with the addition of several more which I have been looking for. A real treat to find them all in the same place. As this was a Christmas present from James to me, his father Al, I must say it has been a pleasure dealing with you.
Been looking for this for years!.......2006-05-21
I have been searching for this music for years. Was so thrilled when I finally found it, and since getting the CD, have listened to it over and over. I love it! This is for anyone who loves instrumental music. It's both a lot of fun to listen to as well as sentimental. I may even need to get a second copy!
High energy & good karma.......2006-04-25
I remember buying the original Apollo 100 album in the early 70s, thinking that 'Joy' was worth having the album by itself.
It turned out the entire album was incredibly well crafted and all the instrumentals were breathtaking. So, I'm very glad to be able to get the original tracks and more from Amazon.
I have to admit that watching 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' had something to do with my looking for this item. It was well placed in the movie and is such a great source of inspiration.
Get it before it becomes obscure and OOP...
anything instrumental.......2006-03-26
it is fantastic!! when i saw it was an import, i was a bit apprehinsive, but then when i got it i was relieved to see it was manufactured in germany, because in my opinion the germans are the best engineers in the world, after liveing there for 2 years. i did have a bit of a problem ordering it & the other one i ordered at the same time "rock instrumental classics" {volume 3 the seventies}. i noticed one came from californis , & the other from illinois.. the problem was in changing my payment method, as i have 3 accounts, & my credit card is a debit card, & there was not sufficient funds there to cover the transaction. & i made several attempts to change from the previous order, & for some reason i was unable to, & as a result i was charged a $34 overdraft charge, & i thought " JOY BEST OF APPOLLO 100"
WAS A BIT EXPENSIVE AT $25.. THANKS GAREY D. HAYES P.S. THE CARD YOU USED IS ALRIGHT NOW, & IT WILL BE THE ONE I WILL BE USING IN THE FUTURE GAREY
A Blast from the Past.......2006-01-29
This is a charming set of music from a powerfully influential but not overly well known group from the early 1970s. There is real musicianship here by taking classics from the masters and putting them to a pop/rock format. I searched for and purchased this Apollo 100 CD because I heard a segment of their pop version of Ode to Joy (Beethoven)in the movie "The 40 Year Old Virgin". It's good music, has a bouncy happy feelings, has tracks that you don't mind blasting in your enclosed car, and transports you back to a time of musical experimentaion. And by the way, I wouldn't be surprised if Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) didn't get some of their ideas from this influential group. Go out and get this CD; you'll be glad you did.

Placido Domingo and the Mariachis.......2007-06-08
This is a wonderful CD of Placido and the Mariachis. What voices. Its great
Mariachi by a great voice .......2007-04-24
This is obviously Placido Domingo attemping to play outside his chosen profession as an opera singer. I take nothing away from him for his attempt. Even though he sings rancheras in the mariachi vein his opera training and voice unmistakingly comes through; there is nothing wrong with that. He is not a mariachi singer in the style of Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Vicente Fernandez(or his son Alejandro), Jorge Negrete,Jose Hernandez, the various vocalists of Mariachi Vargas, Pedro Ingfante, Nati Cano, Pablo Montero or any slew of authentic interpreters; the key word here is interpreter. Domingo has a wonderful voice, robust and clear and he has all the elements for a mariachi singer but first and foremost he is a opera singer and it shows. The crossover is difficult. The songs on this disc are very good and even if you are a mariachi aficionado you should enjoy his marvelous voice and fine accompanyment to these classic songs. The classic Jose Alfredo song(nearly half are written by El Rey) "Paloma Querida" is well done as is the Spanish song "Malaguena." He especially shines on El Rey's "Cuando Sale La Luna " where he extends his voice in fine opera/mariachi style and streches the notes with emotion and "El Jinete" where he substitutes falsetto voice for his opera delivery. I have to give him credit as he delivers a pretty good version of " Ay Jalisco No Te Rajas" and "Soy Mexicano." If you like good singing, can tolerate the fact that he is not a genuine mariachi singer than you will like this opera singers homage to Mexico's music. If you are so wrapped up in a nationalist perspective(only Mexicans can sing mariachi) than stay away from this one. Recommended for aficionados of fine interpreters of mariachi who love mariachi music.
Depends if you are a mariachi afficionado.......2004-08-20
My review for this CD brings up the same points as my review for "Flamenco" by Pepe Romero in that in both these cases, you have musicians who have spent most of thier careers in classical music and have tried their hand at a different genre.
And just as the case with Pepe Romero and Flamenco, 100 años of Mariachi gives us wonderful performances... refined, precise, not lacking anything on the surface. No doubt, Domingo sings wonderfully... but will not please "afficionados" who feel the music should have a certain earthiness and rawness of emotion only gained through years and years of specializing and living this type of music only.
Long ago as a teenager living in Mexico, Placido Domingo sang much Mariachi music for pleasure (himself a big fan of the ranchera greats) before he decided to concentrate all his energy on training for a full-time opera career. So this style of music is by no means "unnatural" for him to sing now or is it out of place for him as, say, American Broadway show tunes. However, he also admitted he could not produce the full range of mariachi vocal technique because such would possibly damage his voice for his operas.
Taking all that into consideration, I did enjoy this CD very much. I personally found Domingo's singing style highly refined yet strongly masculine... very much proper for this music. And always showing impeccable good taste and wonderful musicianship. What I always admired about Domingo is no matter what type of music he ventures into, he really tries his best to prepare and "live" the music as an actor does for a role. Don't be dissuaded by those claiming a mere opera singer can't sound convincing in Mariachi, or that he brings "nothing" to this music... as soon as I played this CD and Domingo sang the first phrase of "Paloma Querida", I was sold. Of course, Domingo is not a genuine ranchera specialist. But there are times when one can't help but believe he is based on his performance here.
I highly reccomend this CD for those new to Mariachi music, or for those more concerned with wonderful singing of this music in a general sense. True afficionados will of course prefer the genuine interpreters of yesterday and today and give this one a pass. But given the extremely poor taste of multitudes of singers who tried this music in recent years, I find it hard to believe that Domingo, with his wonderfully refined singing, could be dismissed by anybody.
Have you heard of Javier Solis?.......2004-04-18
By far nothing comparable to Javier Solis. Not taking anything away from the tenor of OPERA not Ranchera...Lets leave the rancheras for those who are gifted in its style. You want real rancheras listen to MR. Javier Solis.
Mediocre.......2004-02-18
I am a fan of Placido Domingo...the Opera & Zarzuela Singer...not the Ranchera singer, not the Broadway song singer, not the ballad singer. Placido is great at what he does, but his style on most popular is monotonous and he really doesn't bring anything to the table. I whole heartedly recommend Jorge Negrete for hard-core rancheras. Even Vicente Fernandez' performance on "Joyas Rancheras" is a much better recording of this genre.

Picture Of M.S. On The Cover Is Cute, But Only "Sick of Myself" Is Truly Memorable.......2006-11-01
"Sick of Myself" is such a strong pop song, the rest of the album pales in comparison. If you can get over the let-down, there's some pretty good stuff here. The guitarists on the album (Ricahrd Lloyd, formerly of Television, Robert Quine, who played with Lou Reed among others, producer Brendan O'Brian and of course Mathew Sweet) are more than competant with the great Richard Lloyd cutting loose on some cool but brief solos.
Lovely CD.......2006-03-23
I got a tape of this album when I was still in high school from a friend, I always loved the music and am so glad I can now replace that very tired cassette tape with a CD.
Matthew Sweet has an unusual sound that is addictive and easy to listen to. I have enjoyed this music for ages and I would recommend that everyone have a little listen as it would appeal to many!
My Favorite CD!.......2005-06-26
I am a huge Matthew Sweet fan, and while I have been especially drawn to Altered Beast and Girlfriend, 100% Fun is his one piece of work to which I constantly return. Perhaps my sentimentality is due to the excellent song writing, or maybe I love this CD because out of all the Matthew Sweet albums I own, I enjoy singing along with this one the most... all I know is that I originally bought 100% Fun on cassette and played it so much that it broke, forcing me to re buy it on compact disc. Whatever the reason, 100% Fun is hands- down my favorite album, and exceedingly worthy of high praise.
100% Fun!.......2005-03-21
The title gets it right - this is a very fun album. There are a lot of great songs on here. Infectious lyrics and music - it still surprises me that Matthew Sweet isn't more popular than he is.
One other thing...it's a sin that "We're The Same" wasn't a bigger hit than it was. Truly a great song!
"sick of myself"-yeaaaaaa.......2005-01-29
i heard "sick of myself" on the radio back in the day and i was hooked from second number one. absolutely mesmerizing song. after that though, the cd doesnt do it for me. too watered down and just nto my style. but "sick of myself"-if you like any type of rock, this song is phenomenal. buy it used just for that song.

Amazon.com essential recording
Although Gyorgy Ligeti is best known for his eerie, tonally ambiguous choral and orchestral writing (immortalized in 2001: A Space Odyssey), this collection of works for musical automata--player piano, barrel organ, and metronomes--includes some of his most astonishing music. The player piano pieces are an exhilarating, intensely physical roller-coaster ride through superhuman tempi and dynamic extremes--an intriguing marriage of artifice and human invention. While clearly indebted to the influence of Nancarrow, Ligeti's player piano works are more approachable than Nancarrow's rigorous etudes, revealing the sense of humor that distinguishes Ligeti from his more ponderous contemporaries. Likewise, the controversial prank piece Metronomes foreshadows the phasing experiments of Reich with its intricate cross-rhythms created by metronomes marking time simultaneously at different speeds. Perhaps most fascinating of all are Ligeti's compositions for computer-modified barrel organ--a hand-cranked, calliope-like instrument popular with itinerant musicians in the 1700s. --Dennis Rea

Report from the far reaches of the musical envelope........2006-08-29
This recording of Gyorgy Ligeti's 'Mechanical Music' gets five stars from me only because I happen to like this sort of thing, and 'good' music of this type which pushes the envelope in one direction or another is hard to come by. My immediate reaction to it is the amount of similarity I hear in some of the works to those of Frank Zappa's more serious instrumentals, especially to his 'signature' tune, 'Peaches En Regalia'. If I didn't know Sir Frank was heavily influenced by Edgar Varese, I would have started looking for Hungarian skeletens in the Zappa closet.
I will say that if you are not a nut on having the 'complete' set of things, this CD is less interesting than Ligeti's vocal works, but just a bit more interesting than his conventional instrumental works.
Not great music, but fun.......2006-02-16
Of Marcel Duchamp's powerful "Nude Descending a Staircase," an unfriendly (but perceptive) critic said a better title would have been "Explosion in a Shingle Factory." I'd suggest that Ligeti's Poeme Symphonique for 200 Metronomes might more descriptively be titled "Tone Poem: Waiting Out a Twenty-Minute Hailstorm in a Tin Shack."
That said, the album is fun. Some of the barrel organ works have a whimsicality that's appropriate for this instrument (which sometimes produces a sound that I can only describe as watery). It's interesting to hear Ligeti's already-strange Musica Ricercata pieces scored for barrel organ. No one of these pieces, however, carries a lot of emotional power.
share Ligeti's fascination with mechanical things........2004-01-30
First off, I should inform you that Sony's Ligeti Edition series is being deleted so if you're interested in this stuff, you should pick up the ones you want as soon as you can. Ligeti Edition 5 is a good one. No, it's AWESOME. If you have any interest in "mechanical music," this should be essential.
Poeme Symphonique for 100 Metronomes was the main thing I wanted to hear on this collection. The piece starts with 100 metronomes ticking in a dense, ordered mass of monotone ticks. As the piece progresses, as some of the metronomes finish winding down, distinct rhythmic arrangements begin to emerge, swaying and wavy and disorienting. (You can also play a good trick on someone: play this piece in their car and they'll think the vehicle is about to explode or something.) Finally, one metronome is left ticking alone, then silence. The concept seemed utterly fascinating so I knew it was something I had to check out. Fortunately, it is more than just an idea that sounds good on paper - it is a very enthralling piece of music. In the liner notes, Ligeti discusses the thermodynamic category of maximal entropy, which factored into his considerations in composing this piece. That's interesting, because in his work on "dissipative structures," Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine theorized that a given system might reach a "bifurcation point," at which its simpler processes can no longer provide for order. At this point, Prigogine tells us, the system can either go into a total, entropic collapse, or evolve into a higher form of order. The second law of thermodynamics (on which our understanding of entropy is based) may not be as relevant as Prigogine's insights. Rather than coming to maximal entropy upon the finale of the single metronome, we can think of it as a new beginning. It's kind of inspirational in its own weird little way. To get the most out of it, play it on your finest stereo equipment at massive volumes and drown in the sound (gotta emulate the live performance anyway you can).
Another highlight of this collection as Ligeti's piano Etudes adapted for player piano. In standard form, the Etudes demand reams of virtuosity. Here, they are rearranged for player piano where there are no limits imposed by the performer - even the godlike Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Fredrik Ullen are still MEN, and thus have man's limitations. Needless to say, these adaptations are stunning and astonishingly fast, from the head-spinning runs of L'escalier du diable to the astonishing gamelan texture of Galamb borong (for two player pianos). Also of interest is Continuum, adapted for two player pianos. It takes the blurry prestissimo to unreal speeds (it cannot actually be played fast enough on standard piano - the original was written for harpsichord).
The barrel organ pieces are very amusing adaptations of early Ligeti with shadows of Bartok, and they are full of the original pieces' rhythmic ingenuity and vigor, but with flawless mechanical precision and tone control. I think a big reason for my enjoying them is their quirky sound. As for Musica ricercata, personally I'd rather listen to Aimard's piano version (on Ligeti Edition 3), but the barrel organ adaptation is a pretty interesting spin on the piece, with an arrangement that gives it a very different flavor. The barrel organ also makes them sound kinda proggy, hehe.
Get it. Remember, this stuff's going out of print, and Ligeti is so good you don't want to miss your opportunity to have his music!
Better than it had any right to be.......2003-11-26
I stalled for a long time on buying this disc because the general premise didn't seem attractive. 40 minutes of arrangements for barrel organ (mainly of early Ligeti), 15 of arrangements for player piano and a 20-minute piece for 100 metronomes just didn't seem much like fun. In part I was right, but there are also some surprising successes in store for the listener.
Continuum and Hungarian Rock are both harpsichord pieces: one a frenetic pattern-illusion toccata, the other a piece of faux-naif postmodern pastiche. Both come off very well in barrel organ transcription--it's so much easier to hear details that tend to get lost in live performance. Three early piano pieces follow in barrel organ transcriptions: the Capriccio #1 and Invention are not greatly interesting, but Pierre Charial's barrel organ version of the second Capriccio finds depths--and premonitions of later Ligeti--in it that have so far been missed by live interpreters.
The Poeme Symphonique might well be Ligeti's most controversial piece, and it's a comparatively rare venture into Dadaism. Essentially, all the performance involves is queuing up 100 metronomes at different speeds and waiting for them to run down. It's actually more musically interesting than one would expect--patterns emerge from a blur before the rhythms become more and more regular at the end--but it's unlikely to be a piece the listener is likely to return to. (In truth, it works much better live, treated as an installation.)
The barrel organ transcription of Musica ricercata for piano doesn't add very much to the original. One or two pieces--particularly the seventh--do benefit from having new light drawn on them, but in general I'd rather hear a pianist play it (particularly Aimard in his excellent performances on volume 3 of this edition).
The disc ends with player piano transcriptions. Der Zauberlehring, Vertige, En suspens and L'escalier du diable all appear much faster here than on recordings with human pianists. L'escalier, in particular, gives a tremendous sheer visceral thrill, though I miss the expressiveness of a live pianist. Coloana fara sfarasit is actually intended for a player piano, as Ligeti found it was too hard for a real pianist to play. It's a splendidly exhilarating ride, and I hope one day a super-virtuoso will be found who can play it on the piano. The two transcriptions for two antiphonally divided player pianos are not so interesting: Galamb borong gains little from the arrangement, while the version of Continuum that closes the disc isn't nearly as fun as the one that opens it.
I enjoyed this disc, though it's not one I return to very often. If you like the concept, I would recommend this recording--though buy it sooner rather than later as Sony's website no longer lists this disc as in print.
listen to with open ears.......2003-06-04
This cd is very interesting to listen to. Wow the barrel organ is a little different but it adds another view to Ligeti's music. Now for Poeme Symphonique for 100 metronomes, i didn't know how i would go with this piece. First time was like wow different but the second time started to hear something very personal.Music is what you make it

Edinburgh's noise merchants have stepped through the looking glass with this newest release. While harmony and traditional song structure used to play second fiddle to their anguished cries and hearty gusts of guitar squall, 100 Broken Windows displays a more mature quartet: still edgy but wonderfully tuneful. It's a formula that's less "Sex Pistols for students," as they've been previously described, and more "R.E.M. for street punks." That comparison seems inevitable, given lead vocalist Roddy Woomble's passionate delivery of cloudy-clever lyrics, but plenty of other influences come to mind throughout as well: exhilarating, throaty Nirvana-esque sing-a-longs ("Roseability," "Idea Track," "Actually It's Darkness") and emotive Fugazi-like stormers ("Listen to What You've Got," "Rusty"). But these 12 tracks are thoroughly the band's own and ultimately live well beyond any easy points of reference. --Bob Michaels

Customer Reviews:
Imminently Catchy.......2006-08-13
REM without the politics is the best way to describe 100 Broken Windows. But don't let that stop you from buying this disc, you would regret it. Admitedly the message can add power to a song but it can also be depressing to have to hear the message everytime. 100 Broken Windows is a fun listen that will let you escape.
The lyrics are obscure enough that you will enjoy the vocals as another instrument but understandable enough that you will be singing with the songs. 100 Broken Windows has at least a half dozen tunes that you will find yourself humming the next day. Multi-layered sound with outstanding songwriting. You will find yourself constantly changing your mind as to which is your favorite song but you won't be skipping any when you listen to the disc. Do yourself a favor and get this relatively undiscovered gem.
Are you serious? One doller twenty-five.......2006-01-13
This is a really good album for that price. It's got some good rockin' Morrisseyed style to it, "Roseability" is a good example, if you don't like that song, then you're crazy. Just the chorus alone, "Gertrude Stein said that's enough! I know that that's not enough now"
This album was always one that puzzle me it could slip through the cracks so easily but it really does the trick, for a dollar twenty-five, why wonder about it, if you don't like it, then you only spent a dollar. I'll break it down though so you'll know what your getting. It's a bit Morrissey like, only more upbeat and kind of rockin' there's moments that outshine others sure, but it's still a crackin' album.
hmmm...........2005-10-23
these guys really sound like REM on some of these songs. with a little bit of early Blur thrown in and some harder sounding guitar work. i had heard great things about this band and i got this album expecting to be blown away. but even though there are a few good songs on here, nothing really astounds me and i find myself being bored and even a little bit annoyed while listening to this. it just sounds kind of underdone. not bad, but... perhaps some of their later records are a bit better?
Scottish bliss.......2005-03-14
Okay, so Idlewild does have a tendency to sound like a punkier version of _Document_-era R.E.M. -- especially on this album. There must be room in your heart for that, right?
Its sequel, _The Remote Part_, is a bit more ostentatious in terms of its production values, but I'd have to say that this one has it beat in terms of melody and passion.
The first two-thirds of _100 Broken Windows_ represents one of the best eight-song winning streaks I've ever heard: just when you think they can't possibly come up with another scorching guitar hook or sing-along lyric, WHAM. In particular, "Little Discourage" takes the nuclear approach to album-opening, followed a bit later by the spectacular triple punch of "Roseability," "Idea Track," and "Let Me Sleep (Next to the Mirror)." Things do fall off a bit after that, but by then, I'm willing to bet that you'll be prepared to forgive.
AMAZING.......2004-11-25
This band is truly amazing. 100 Broken Windows is definitely one of the top ten records ever recorded, it is full of heartfelt songs that hit you hard while listening. My favorite track has to be "Little Discourage." The song is just incredible. If you're looking just to listen to a few songs to see whether you like them or not, listen to that song. But I'm sure that won't even matter, because every single song on this album is incredible. A must have for any indie-rock music fan.
