Getting to know 14th.century music.......2000-08-14
This recording of early music is wonderful in its sound quality and acoustics. It is truley a masterpiece. Just keep in mind that music of this period is not the bright or danciful folk tunes often heard in 16th or 17th.century folk songs. This recording is of the developing formal mass and represents the highest level of performing skills of the period.
Mind blowing Machaut!.......2000-03-17
Last year I did my Masters' dissertation on Mediaeval Scholasticism and discovered this CD at about the same time. I played it softly on my CD player as I walked the 'via dolorosa'. The CD helped me do very well because I feel it has a unique Mediaeval/Renaissance crossover feel that enabled me to internalise what these people were thinking. The plain lines of Gregorian Chant have been replaced with a three harmony glory which darts about the aisles and chapels of Reims Cathedral, slowing and speeding, lowering and soaring and totally gripping with its harmonic complexities. If there is a summation of the glories of the late 14th century it would be Aquinas' Realism, synthesised by Scotus and finally brought through to the nominalism of William of Ockham, the writings of Dante, Petrarch, Boccacio and Chaucer and this wonderful music. This is not simple rustic music of the home spun English at Crecy. This is the musical depiction of French civilization at its zenith, with its famous manuscripts like the Bible of Jean de Papelou it the Hours of Jeanne D'Evreux. The Romanesque style with its lapis lazuli blues and its idealising of courtly love in scenes that show this earth and the next are the nearest we have to visualisation of this absolute music. I see Decorated Gothic Stain Glass Windows and the most intricate Flying Buttresses which are a silent witness to this music which tantalisingly stands in the changing of worlds. The Black Death was only twelve years away and the old order would be challenged in ten more by uprisings in France and the Peasants' Revolt in England in 1381. The ancien regime would hold on to power but the rediscovery of the ideas of Greece and Rome would change the West's ideas about itself for ever. The New World would crystalize all this but that is in the future. This CD portrays this mediaeval world which fascinates us today with its peculiar mixture of beauty and barbarism. Great value and brilliant at any price with 77 minutes of beatifully written and performed music.
As Machaut heard it in the Reims Cathedral.......1999-11-02
"La Messe de Notre Dame" by Guillaume de Machaut is one of the earliest settings of the Mass by a single composer. The Oxford Camerata,in the Reims cathedral,so the would match the same accoustics as those that must of been heard when the work was first premiered in 1364. the rest of the songs are from "Le voir dit" The liner notes of this recording tell how it was possible to match with great fidelity the accoustics of the Reims Cathedral. This is one of my favorites recordings in my private collection. Questions and comments are greatly appreciated.

Customer Reviews:
LB's best symphony--mournful, ironic, jazzy.......2007-01-09
After winning the Pulitzer Prize for his "Jeremiah" Sym., Bernstein remained in top form as a composer throughout the late Forties and Fifties. His 'Age of Anxiety' Sym. #2 is refeshingly jazzy, and Philippe Entremont plays as if to the manner born in the long piano solos. Both of LB's other symphonies capture a specifically Jewish-Biblical significance that meant much to the composer but hasn't worn well. The Age of Anxiety is more like his Ballet Fancy Free, a comment, wry and often witty, on modern city life. It captures Auden's mournful sophistication perfectly, even if you haven't read the poem that inspired the music.
One could ask for no better recording--LB's remake on DG is a contender but not the equal of this. Playing and recording are perfect. The two humorous song cycles sung by LB's great friend Jennie Tourel are a mere fillip to a CD that's stingy on timing but a gem otherwise.
THE AGE OF ANXIETY is Lenny's greatest piece.......2005-09-10
I agree with zmusicman in regard to THE AGE OF ANXIETY. Regarding the 2-clarinet PROLOGUE: it took me a while to realize that it's actually an organ tune transcribed for clarinets. Very clever. But THE EPILOGUE is pretty corny & derivative. It's an obvious variation on the first motif that you hear in Copland's THIRD SYMPHONY. Philippe Entremont's pianism is right up there with Bud Powell's. My favorite passage is that brief high-register glockenspiel thingy in THE MASQUE. I think it's done twice. Lenny was writing psychedelia way back in 1949.
Among Lenny's Less Known but Highly Respectable Works!.......2004-09-08
Leonard Bernstein, an American icon and perhaps the best known conductor, composer, and music teacher from the New World, may be famous for his Broadway shows such as the entertaining out-of-the-war feeling "On the Town", and the fun and at the same time brooding story of New York's star-crossed "West Side Story". Give him some time though if you only know the "American" side of the composer.
He never threw away his Jewish heritage, and this first symphony "Jeremiah" enclosed in the CD is one of the prime examples of witnessing Lenny's musician expression as a Jew.
I love this symphony because despite it's musical complexity easy enough to tell it's 20th century genre, the sheer tragic theme of this piece is strong enough to make me bow down in tears. The piece is in three movements; first tells of Jeremiah's pleading to the people, the nailbiting second the corruption done by the people, and the third the lamentation of Jeremiah to Jerusalem, "ruined, pillaged, and dishonored after his desparate efforts to save it". Ms. Jennie Tourel sang brilliantly in the movement.
The second symphony "The Age of Anxiety" is another example of Lenny's serious and musically dark and modern side of music. Based on the poem by W.H. Auden with the same name, it will take you through this spiritual and moral journey.
I was quite charmed with Lenny's two easy song cycles "I Hate Music!" and "Four Recipes". And once again, kudos to Ms. Tourel. Just take a listen and you'll feel like you're a little innocent child again. The songs are as elementary and bright as a Mother Goose rhyme.
No, this isn't going to be another West Side Story.............2000-07-14
....or On the Town or Candide or any other famous broadway/operettas you've heard from it. But it's not bad. Bernstein has a completely different approach to his symphonic works then from his others you know of. I really felt the music in the first symphony, Jeremiah, fit the Lamentations chapter of the bible and the soprano in the final movement only added to the passion. Age of Anxiety was in an awkward format for a symphony, and seemed to be more of a piano concerto/work then a symphony. If I hated music, I would still hate it after hearing Bernstein's I Hate Music. These are just a few 'ditties' he drew up for children which very in style and speed. La Bonne Cuisine was funny (and fast), but you have to follow along in the book to get the humor because the soprano sings so fast. Recording was great. None of this music really stands out among my collection, but it's is still good music.
You must have this disk!.......1999-04-03
This disk is one of the best disks I've ever heard, and the best disk of Bernstein that I've ever heard. Bernstein's symphonies are very good, and it's very easy to listen to them (unlike other 20th century creations). This performance is very exciting and thrilling.

Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite recordings.......2005-10-01
This recording is sublime!!! This is a compilation of Anne Sofie von Otter's favorite pieces. She chose such diverse and lovely music. Her diction is incredible. Her expressive voice moved me to tears in "A dio Roma," by Monteverdi. Her Handelian arias were also wonderful. My favorites from this CD are: all of the German lieder pieces, "A dio Roma" (Monteverdi), "Un sapin isole' se dresse" (Lahore), "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" (Weill), "In quali eccessi...Mi tradi" (Mozart), and "Non piu mesta" (Rossini). She is such an amazing Lyric Mezzo soprano. I love her so much. I also reccomend the Mass in C minor with Anne Sofie von Otter and Kiri te Kanawa, Cosi fan tutte with Renee Fleming (Mozart), and Ariodante (Handel). I strongly advise anyone to purchase this recording!!!
Beautiful voice, beautiful music.......2005-09-10
Superior quality recording! Gorgeous vocal production and sound. Terrific choice of material. Top of the line recording.
Anne Sofie von Otter- The Artist's Album.......2005-08-06
Some of the songs are a little too obscure for me, but I like her singing. However, I like Renee Fleming's singing better.
A fantastic CD collection of arias!!.......2005-01-06
Anne Sofie Von Otter's mezzo voice is amazing!! Her selections of Handel's Ariodante and Rossini's La Cenerentola were amazing!! This CD is amazing and if you're a huge fan of Von Otter, you should get this CD!!
Amazing versatility and unparalleled emotion.......2004-02-09
OK, so I own almost everything she's done. I am particularly fond of songs/lieder and, having listened to a great number of both male and female song singers, I can find no singer in the same universe. The intelligence of her approach, the control of her vocal color and vibrato to match the notes and lyrics, the playfulness with which she approaches the music are without equal.
This is an interesting disc and I didn't buy it until recently since I already had a lot of it and prefer songs to arias. But it was quite a revelation. The Handel and Weill are wonderful. For something completely different, try the Delage "Lahore" Track 12. Eerie and beautiful.
If Track #11, Skogen Sover, doesn't make you cry you have no heart. It may be the most beautiful use of the human voice I've ever heard. Listen carefully to the way she changes vowel sounds in the word 'juninatt' throwing in the 'n' both times so you barely hear it and it doesn't disrupt the vowel color change. At the end, turn up the volume and listen to her fade out with no vibrato until she's barely audible, then add just a touch of vibrato as she finishes with the final 't' of 'juninatt'.
There may be better aria singers, with some voices better for some types of opera. But this woman's incredible versatility is well-reflected here and a delight to listen to. Even a Rossini at the end, gynmastics and all. Has there ever been a singer with a wider repertoire matched with such gorgeous emotion? Now, if we could only get the UK version of this disc, with more and different offerings, here on Amazon USA...
A great intro to this powerful, emotional singer. Take it as a starter and buy the full discs that have the tracks you like best. You'll be captivated and not disappointed.

Before you decide to say "no thanks" to music written by anonymous composers on the island of Cyprus in the early 15th century, just wait one minute. Forget the historical references and consider these vocal and instrumental works as music that can be loved first for its pure and uplifting sonorities. When you hear the perfect blend of instruments (vielles, lute, slide trumpet) and voices (countertenor, tenor, and mezzo-soprano), you'll find yourself drawn into a very pleasant adventure that musically isn't as far afield as you might expect. Beginning with the occupation of Cyprus by Richard the Lion Hearted in 1198, a procession of Western rulers and visitors brought polyphonic music to the island. A manuscript now residing in Turin, but written in early 15th-century Cyprus, is the source for the pieces performed on this disc. The variety and quality of the music is astonishing--well worth an extended visit. --David Vernier

Another Rave Review.......2007-05-13
Since all the previous reviews have been five-stars, and Mr Mezzick's review from last year is very ample, all I wish to add is my strong agreement that this is an outstanding performance of an important repertoire.
Inspired music.......2005-09-27
I must concur with my fellow reviewer who advocated, in no uncertain terms, that you should get this CD. This is a fabulous recording of lesser known music that deserves a much wider audience. This music comes from a medieval Cypriot manuscript housed in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Turin, which dates to 1413-1422. 'This manuscript is the sole witness to a brief but extraordinary flowering of western art music in Cyprus at the end of the fourteenth and the beginning of the fifteenth century.'
Perhaps one of the reasons for this neglect is political - Cyrpus was a Western outpost during the Crusades; hence, the culture of Cyprus has been influenced by outsiders heavily. The nation of Cyprus still is split between Greek and Turkish communities. The island of Cyprus was at one time a Knights Templar possession, given over to the last King of Jerusalem, and became a Francophile kingdom until the fifteenth century. Because of these close connections with France, the rulers often travelled to the European continent, and brought back both an appreciation for and performers of western musical styles that in turn took root and blossomed into local products such as the compositions recorded here.
The codex in Turin consists of full masses, offices of St. Hylarion and St. Anne, plainsong pieces, mass pieces such as glorias, credos, and more. There are motets, vierlais, rondeaux, and over a hundred ballades. Ths music on this disc is a representative sample of both the secular and sacred pieces.
The performers are the Ensemble Pro Ars Nova. According to their website, 'Ensemble Project Ars Nova, known popularly as Ensemble PAN, takes its name and its sense of spirit from Philippe de Vitry's 14th century musical treatise "Ars Nova" (The New Art). Founded at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland, by young American artists Laurie Monahan (mezzo-soprano), Michael Collver (countertenor and corno muto) and Crawford Young (lute), the Ensemble debuted at the Festival Estival in Paris in 1982. At its American debut at the Castle Hill Festival in 1984, Shira Kammen (bowed strings) and John Fleagle (tenor and medieval harp) joined the group.' In addition to these members, they have guest performers Peter Becker (tenor), Karen Clark-Young (mezzosoprano), Randall Cook (vielle), Steven Lundahl (slide trumpet), and Margaret Raines (mezzosoprano). This disc was recorded in 1991, during the Ensemble's residency in the Boston area on a grant.
The clarity, the vibrancy, the depth and beauty in the music and in the performances perfectly match to give a strong, memorable experience.

Beautifully performed, well recorded, this is a terrific addition to any collection. I find it at once calming and invigorating. Whenever anyone comes over and happens to hear it, they are instantly struck by the beauty and simplicity of the music. Highly recommended.
The Island of ST. HYLARION - an unexpected encounter.......1999-06-20
The CD entitled "The Island of ST. HYLARION" - performed by ENSEMBLE PROJECT ARS NOVA - was an unexpected encounter for me. In this CD, music of Cyprus Island from 1413 to 1422 are recorded. I was surprised that the pieces in the CD was not so-called "ethnic musics", but the pieces influenced by medieval French culture! Some are secular chansons with texts of medieval French, some are Gregorian Chants with motet, and some are instrumental pieces by medieval instruments. The pieces are elegant, and, I truly assure, give peacefulness to all listeners! If you listen to this CD during very hot and humid summer day, I again assure, you listeners can feel as if you were in the cool highlands! This CD was introduced in Japan around 1991 at Virgin Mega Store in Tokyo, and this store chosed this CD as "Recommended CD." In fact it was sold well. I hope you all share the surprise as I felt by listening this CD.

Le parfum d'extase.......2007-05-18
This 4-CD set receives five stars from me in spite of some flaws. I'll outline those flaws first.
Firstly (a flaw to me, perhaps not to others), I'm not very fond of Gérard Souzay's voice and vocal approach. He frequently sounds blustery and the timbre does not really appeal to me. Yet his commitment to these beautiful songs is impeccable, and he has a wealth of experience, beautifully authentic French (of course!) and occasionally the singing is very effective indeed. I agree that the "La bonne chanson" set is sensitive and moving - it's Souzay at his best. But in general... Souzay is not one of my favourite baritones.
Secondly, as other reviews have mentioned, no translations are included. However, the full text of each song is contained in the accompanying booklet, and for those who don't read French well enough to translate, there are translations on-line of all of the poems set by Fauré. I agree this is not an ideal solution, and that the boxed set would have been improved by translations.
Thirdly, one is sometimes overwhelmed by the balance of the voice compared to that of the piano - this is particularly noticeable in Souzay's singing. However, the piano is still audible. The solution is mostly to turn down the volume for one or two tracks.
Let me now explain why, in spite of the above faults, I still consider this a superb set.
Firstly, the truly lovely singing of Elly Ameling. What a gloriously pretty sound - and I mean "pretty" without any denigration whatsoever. It's not JUST pretty - it's beautiful as well. This is a lovely gleaming sound, perfectly placed, and with a wealth of intrinsic and elegant interpretation that is native to Elly Ameling's singing. She's a miracle - no matter what she sings, it sounds "sung in" and perfectly understood, perfectly interpreted. (I admit Ms Ameling's French is slightly accented at times, but it's completely understandable and very good. It doesn't impair the performance of these songs at all.)
Secondly, Dalton Baldwin's playing is sensitive and impassioned in turns - always lyrical, always attuned to the requirements of each song. What a huge amount of work must have gone into this mammoth 4-CD task!
Thirdly, these vocal compositions are exquisite. Several of them are justly famous as works of genius, and fall so delightfully upon the ear that it seems they have always existed, perfect and full of wonder... that Fauré plucked them out of semi-existence to give them reality.
Fourthly... it's 4CDs of Fauré's vocal works. For those who love French vocal music, it's an extravagant delight to have such a thorough and wide-ranging collection. For singing students, how marvellous to have such a collection to hand to help when choosing songs. For fellow singers, what joy to have all of these songs in such a fine collection in order to note details and particularly admirable points.
In short - this is a set I wouldn't be without. While it's not flawless, it's full of delights. Ameling's singing of "La rose" is one of the highlights, and Fauré's three exquisite duets are all represented here. Highly recommended.
Superb chansoms. Superb Ameling. Buy It........2007-03-01
This EMI Classics package of four CD's for the price of two (plus) is really the way I like to buy classic recordings, where the complete set covers all of a single especially interesting grouping of works. This set, like the comparable one on Debussy, is simply grand, especially, as noted by other reviewers, with the contribution of Ameling, a soprano from whom not much is heard of today, but who, in her prime, was on top of her game.
My only objection to the package is that while the notes five the French text of the songs and the author of the text, there is no translation. Otherwise, this is a super buy.
Great!!!.......2006-06-19
The music on this compilation is beautiful. It is also beautifully sung. Amelling is amazing, as always!!!
A delightful programme.......2006-01-20
Faure was a genius and his songs are some of the most beautiful ever written, being animated by the spirit of beauty itself (Ms Venus:-).)
The performers did an outstanding job singing this repertoire, and especially Elly Ameling's performance is pure *delight*
- honestly-.
I hope others will enjoy it as much as I have.
Highly recommended.
Limpid, refined, elegant music........2001-04-04
This famous set provides on 4 CDs the complete songs (mélodies, he preferred to call them) by Faure. They are entrusted to the native French baritone, the Dutch soprano, and their accompanist Dalton Baldwin, and were recorded in the early 1970s. The set is not inexpensive, so I shall try to outline its merits. The music itself is enthralling. Faure set, over a period of sixty years, texts by French poets. Limpid, refined, elegant music, it repays repetition and close listening. One reviewer has suggested that no listener will want to listen to umpteen of these mélodies in one sitting, but I have never had too much of them. If slow tempi and arpeggio accompaniments begin to pall, listen to "Nell" (CD 2, Track 4). The performers satisfy on all counts. Souzay's contribution reflect a life time's association with the music, and a tradition that goes back through his teachers to the time of Faure himself. His definitive version of "La bonne Chanson" is especially fine. If his style is more suited to the impassioned, ardent items, it balances well with the cooler, more detached singing of Elly Ameling. So that you will not be disappointed, I should also mention that translations of the texts are not provided. I also wish that the balance had been better engineered. Sometimes Souzay seems to have the microphone in his mouth, and always the piano seems too distant. These are but minor flaws, however, in a long necklace of priceless pearls.

Essential for the chansom junkie. Buy It........2006-10-25
'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.
I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.
Almost completely wonderful.......2005-04-29
Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.
Indisputable Gallic flair.......2004-06-06
These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.
Idiomatic, fresh, cleanly recorded.......2001-05-12
This is a fine set. Dalton Baldwin accompanies each singer with clarity and zest. And who can resist the affectionate singing of the likes of Nicolai Gedda and Elly Ameling? The "melodies" themselves are magnificent--among Poulenc's finest creations. Whether you have other performances of these works or not, I think you'd be pleased with this beautifully recorded set. Certainly the 70's-vintage performances are more individual in profile, more "romantic," if you will, than those conjured by most of the "anonymous" singers of our own age. Recommended with enthusiasm.
the best songs ever ruined by uneven performing.......2001-05-05
This is a warning for all Poulenc fans NOT to take the bargain route and purchase this immense collection -- you might think you're getting a great deal but: the singing and pianism is substandard and doesn't do the music justice (remotely). Songs like Bonne Journe'e or Ho^tel are all but ruined... Here's what to buy: Bernard Kruysen's CD of selected Poulenc masterpieces (favoring the Elouard settings)... nobody will ever come close to Kruysen in interpreting Poulenc. Avoid THIS CD. They still get 2 stars for (1) being encyclical and (2) delivering clear and even sound quality.

Taking its name from Fauré's famous La Bonne Chanson cycle, this is a collection of French songs for voice and diverse chamber ensemble. It includes not only the Fauré but Ravel's Three Poems of Stéphane Mallarmé, Frank Martin's Three Christmas Songs and, strangest of all, Poulenc's Rapsodie négre, an early, misguided attempt at Gauguin-esque exotica. Most of it is tasty stuff, particularly for those who have a high tolerance for musical radiance and don't need that much shade with their light. Performances by Otter are, as always, smart and fastidious, though perhaps a tad cool. -- David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
One of von Otter's most enjoyable efforts. Buy It........2006-05-05
'La Bonne Chanson' by mezzosoprano Anne Sophie Von Otter is the kind of album I really enjoy from today's great female classic vocalists. Next to interpretations of Kurt Weill's German works, the French art song is by far my favorite. It sounds less stilted than the English chamber song and far less heavy than the German Lieder from Shubert and his compatriots. It is neck and neck in my mind with good interpretations of Italian love songs.
I was fortunate to be able to compare this album with the Dawn Upshaw effort, 'The Girl With Orange Lips', on which she performs Ravel's 'Trois Poemes de Stephane Mallarme', which also open Von Otter's disk. I have to say that on these pieces, the two artists sound virtually identical, although Von Otter has just the slightest greater strength and authority in her voice. Picking between the two on these pieces would require a fair coin toss.
On the other hand, Von Otter's other material on this disk is far better than the material on Upshaw's disk, even though they also share performances of Maurice Delage's 'Quatre Poemes hindous'.
Von Otter's performances of Poulenc's 'Rapsodie negre' and Gabriel Faure's 'La Bonne Chanson' are especially good at having me sit up and take notice.
This is especially more enjoyable than her celebrated recordings of Edvard Grieg's songs.
Otherworldly.......2001-06-30
Anne Sofie Von Otter's vocalism is simply one of the most sophisticated these days and, in this disc, she sings music of a very sophisticated nature. The Mallarmé songs are, in its own right, some of the most creative and exquisite in the French repertoire and here Von Otter produces sounds of instrumental and yet most expressive nature. The Chanson Perpetuelle is also sung in the most expressive and wide tonal range and the Swedish mezzo's French couldn't be more idiomatic. It is no wonder that her Mélisande in the Paris Opera was considered to be a complete success. She offers highly virtuosistic and sensitive performances in the Hindu songs and the Fauré are all delicious. My only doubt is about the inclusion of Poulenc's Rhapsodie Nègre in this recital. It has nothing to do with the rest of the pieces and it is an uninspiring piece, especially today when épater la bourgeoisie is something nobody cares about anymore. It is a minor problem in such a nice disc, but I regret that she didn't record here more Fauré and why not some Debussy? Forsberg is the usual nicest pianist and the rest of the team offer great ensemble performances. Wonderfully recorded sound by DG.

Customer Reviews:
Great singing.......2006-03-01
Roberta Alexander is stunning in these songs of Bernstein. Her voice simply shimmers. Really beautiful.
Only Roberta.......2003-12-02
Roberta Alexander is right on top of this recording. She has a beautiful and strong voice, but more importantly, she has perfect command of the music and idiom of these and Ives' songs. The emotional range of the songs is very wide, ranging from playful to thoughtful to sorrowful but she makes all of them sound very natural.
The Five Kid Songs express the imagination of a small child (Jupiter has seven moons, or is it nine? Saturn has a million billion trillion sixty-nine) and it would be very easy to perform them in a childish way, talking down as many adults do - the composer expressly stated that they should not be performed this way and in fact Alexander sings them with a perfectly natural innocence. La Bonne Cuisine is sung with a strong drive, and although it's hard to imagine what anyone should do with excerpts from a cooking book it's still compelling music. The other songs are also nice but not as memorable - as for the songs from Candide, they are beautiful but get the complete recording on Deutsche Grammophon, directed by Bernstein himself (there are two; I prefer the live version, ASIN B000001GD2).
Tan Crone does more than just provide a background; she adds her own interpretation on piano to add even more feeling to the music.
Bernstein's songs do not have the depth of Ives', but this is still a very nice collection. I will have to check out the Barber and Copland recordings on the same label as well.
