Mixed Bag.......2000-01-18

This cd is a collection, so it's not surprising that it IS such a mixed bag. There are a few too many cha cha chas for my taste, and I really dislike the disco/samba-type second cut (Ritmo Pilon). However, there is also some GREAT stuff from Grupo Sierra Maestra, Abelardo Barroso, and Celina Gonzalez. If you are a true Cuban music fan you should get the cd. The songs that I love on this cd I can't find anyplace else.

The 30 or so tracks presented could have either been better chosen, or lacking that, limited to 15 or so and put on one CD. It's an ecclectic mix from the 1950's until 2000, but mostly the music is very recent. The sonics are all very good, but my major complaint is that the liner 'notes,' if they can be called that, consist of just ONE card folded over. This obviously cannot contain more that the track title/composer-lyricist/performer and misleading dates. Misleading because (for example) the Beny More tracks that are from the 1950s are described as copyright 1999 (Virgin/EMI). While this may be true from a legal sense, it is worthless from a musical sense. Please tell us exactly when the track was recorded, the personnel (who's playing that killer solo on "Canta El Piano"?), perhaps the lyrics, and maybe some info on the band/song itself. Look no further that the Buena Vista releases for an excellent model of how to produce liner notes. What is surprising is that this is no fly-by-night outfit putting this CD set out, but Virgin /EMI. Not essential.
