Customer Reviews:
I'm reviewing the LP, not the CD........2005-03-07
This is a phenomenal collection of great artists recorded live in 1978. I just got my hands on the LP. If you can find the CD, go for it. The following is the list of artists and their songs:
1) Santana - "Jugando" and "Dance Sister Dance."
2) Dave Mason - "Let it Go Let it Flow" and "We Just Disagree."
3) Heart - "Love Alive" and "Little Queen."
4) Ted Nugent - "Free For All" and "Snakeskin Cowboys."
5) Aerosmith - "Same Old Song and Dance," "Draw the Line," and "Chip Away at the Stone."
6) Jean Michel Jarre - "Oxygen (part5)."
7) Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - "I'm a King Bee" and "Johnny B. Goode."
8) Rubicon - "Never Gonna Leave" and "Too Hot to Handle."
It appears that neither the CD nor LP are still in print; that's unfortunate. If you're a collector of music, this recording is a must have. The Aerosmith set is spectacular. Remember, this is 1978, live in California. There's something unique about Heart's performance that is worth the price of admission, alone. Nugent is a mad man, as one would expect. I have no idea who Marino & Mahogany Rush are, but they can jam.
There isn't a weak moment in this entire collection. It's a variety of musicians just doing their thing for an energetic crowd.
It was the best twenty-five dollars I've spent in recent years.

Cold night but good performance.......2006-03-12
I bought this concert because I was there that night. I'm glad PJ made the show available to us fans. It was a super cold night and it wasn't their best performance but I'd rather have this then a crappy tshirt!
Getting Pretty Tired.......2001-11-20
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This San Bernardino bootleg is one of the low points in the third leg of the massive 2000 tour. Granted, at 66th out of 72 shows, the band was understandably very tired. This show and the next one in Sacramento show clearly how tired the band was, before they got a last rush of adrenaline to finish the final four or five shows with a bang. In a very unusual move, the band starts tonight's show with "Rearviewmirror," which was almost always used to close the first or second set. Surprisingly, opening the show with this rave-up actually works, instrumental jam session and all. Unfortunately, after a pretty good start, this performance starts to drag with sluggish tempos and many musical errors. Things bottom out in the encore, with horrendous takes on "Insignificance" and "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter..." which are full of bum notes and forgotten lyrics. The band does manage to perk up a little before the end of the show though, with strong takes on "Crazy Mary" and the cool B-side "U." Watch for Eddie's chant of "let's hear it for LOVE!" during the jam in "Daughter," which is about as cheesy as Robert Plant's plea for people to remember laughter in classic live recordings of "Stairway to Heaven." One interesting aspect of this bootleg is the presence of one very loud-mouthed fellow near the soundboard, who manages to say the F-word many times on tape. Good for him.
First Review...great music.......2001-06-02
I'm surprised no one has reviewed this album yet. I just purchased it, and absolutely enjoy it. It was a good set, great music. Not one bad song on the album. There probably are better tour bootlegs availible, but this is a good one, despite the lack of the symbol in the corner that marks the "best" albums.
The show begins with a lively song, and doesn't slow down until Wishlist, and picks itself back up. While the band was obviously tired from the tour during this show, the music was great. The album features a notable performance of Do The Evolution (featured on the Touring Band Video) and a lot of interesting comments by Eddie. The vocals sound a little muffled on the first song, but they seems to clear up as the CD goes on. If you want to have a piece of a concert, these CDs are great, and this one is very good.

All Around Good Show.......2007-06-26
San Francisco, Pearl Jams last night in California of their 2000 tour doesnt disappoint. Its a solid show, but theres not too much thats really incredible or surprising. I actually love the setlist and the performance though. This show has been more hard to figure out if I just like it or love it. The only thing that brings the show down some is the mix on the cd. The vocals are only a little bit lower in the mix than normal. Theres actually times where that sounds better! Like I said, its a little harder to figure out. Other than that one fact, the show is largely good. There are a few really good performances during that night as well. Release, Breakerfall, In Hiding, Jeremy, Do The Evolution, Black, Insignificance, Sleight of Hand, and Once are truly excellent. I cant forget a real plus in my eyes... the fantastic performance of Gods Dice. The song can be seen on the Touring Band DVD. Its one of the tightest versions of the song Ive ever heard. The energy and the amount of fun the band has is the true highlight. It can be heard everytime you listen to the cd. Thats quite nice. So, in the end I do recommend the show to anyone wanting a good PJ performance that is pretty solid with all the energy/vibe a fan could ask for. Not to mention its lack of flub ups and mistakes. Very few during the entire show. I believe as time goes on I will actually love this enjoyable performance.
Soft spot in my heart.......2004-11-19
I have a soft spot for this live record because I was the woman who dressed as George Bush that fateful night and got to dance on stage with Eddie!
Every time I listen to "Do the Evolution," the song we danced to, I'm whisked back to that evening. The show rocked, and this disc is proof. One of the better live discs of all the bootlegs that year, if you ask me. But I just might be biased.
hgjh.......2002-09-08
this cd sounds crystal clear, the instrumentals are great, but the levels on edde vedders mic are too low, and at times the vocals are almost completely obscured (state of love and trust). the selection of songs are all great, but most, if not all are played at 1.25 to 1.5 times the tempo of the studio versions. this cd is not the best ever example of thier live performences (especially compared to their earlier days) but totally, totally worth every penny.
A Great Halloween Dance Party.......2001-10-23
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. I have spent months and months absorbing all of the PJ bootlegs, and I believe that this show in San Francisco was a rather average performance, as compared to the top shows in the tour. But I've got a soft spot for this gig, because I was there! Eat your heart out. Listen closely and you might hear me yelling "GO MIKE" (I'm a big McCready supporter), but of course I was drowned out by the large, ravenous crowd. This show was on Halloween night in 2000, and the crowd was full of costumed freaks. Eddie Vedder noticed two dudes dressed like Al Gore and George W. Bush (the presidential election was one week away), and he invited these two up on stage during "Do the Evolution" and pretended to kill both of them. At the end of the song, you hear him say "George W refuses to die!" In the second encore, the band came back on stage dressed like various members of the Village People. Before the beginning of "Yellow Ledbetter" you can hear Stone Gossard describe Jeff Ament as the most "butch" member of the group. Mike then started the song while mooning the audience!
Those of you who have many of the bootlegs will find that this show has a rather predictable set list. But there are a few surprises thrown in, like rare appearances by "Soldier of Love" and "The Kids are Alright" (two different Who songs tonight). The not-so-common "Release" is the show opener, and "Yellow Ledbetter" is played but is NOT the show closer, making this one of only three shows in the tour in which this unusual situation occurred. Note that video footage of the Gore/Bush guys and the Village People costumes is featured in the "Touring Band" DVD.
We can expect nothing less from these guys!!!.......2001-05-08
I saw this show Halloween night, it was my first live Pearl Jam show. Unfortunately I missed them the past several times they were here, but they did NOT let me or the other 25,000 heads down!! Musically they are so incredibly tight and you can just tell they have a blast making their music which to me, is a super strong sign of excellent musicianship. This is a must have bootleg for any and all PJ fans! They truly are a classic rock n' roll band and I can only hope that my kids will appreciate them even half as much as I do. Selah.

Pearl Jam always has great live performances but this one..........2001-12-18
Pearl Jam always has great live performances but this one...really is awesome. With Matt and Eddie both being from San Diego they were sure to slip in songs in their setlist that show their talents adequately. Loved this show. Any Pearl Jam fan would agree!
Eddie and Matt Go Home.......2001-11-03
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. For a Seattle band, Pearl Jam sure has a lot of guys from San Diego. It turns out that Eddie Vedder and Matt Cameron both grew up in the area, before heading north to an infinitely worse climate (and an infinitely better music scene). In this show, Pearl Jam puts on one of the better performances of the third leg of the 2000 world tour. In some of the other bootlegs around this immediate time period, the band sounds very fatigued because it was getting late in the tour. That's not the case in San Diego however, probably because Eddie and Matt are happy to be in their old stomping grounds and got some surfing in. The set list tonight contains some real surprises, like early appearances by the heavy rockers "Gods' Dice" and "Whipping" to really get the show off the ground. An emotional "Long Road" opens the show in dramatic fashion, and "Rearviewmirror" and "Soon Forget" appear in the middle of the first set, instead of in the encore like usual. The band shines in the rarities "Rival," "Immortality," and "In My Tree," all of which are performed in convincing fashion. Jeff Ament is also especially good tonight, making his mark in "Jeremy" and the jam session that finishes off "Daughter." In a surprise move, Eddie plays the Cat Stevens ballad "Don't Be Shy" in the encore, which works better than you might think. For you analytical types out there, this is the only show out of 47 American bootlegs that does not contain "Betterman."
no doubt one of their best shows.......2001-10-01
Of course, I am probably a little biased because I live in San Diego. If you listen to between-song dialogue, you will learn that Eddie's sister lives in my town which is Chula Vista. Also, towards the end of the show, Eddie discloses his plans to go surfing with Supergrass the next day and hopes that the waves will be good. Well, to see what the waves in San Diego looked like on October 26, 2001, click on the following link or go to surfshot dot com and browse their archived photos.
... They actually weren't too bad so you can imagine that Eddie and the gang had a pretty good day off.
Pearl Jam live- SD, Cal. 10/25/00.......2001-09-06
This Cd is one of the best. All 72 Pearl Jam bootlegs are great-live with great sound quality from the best band ever to hit the stage!
My Friends don't seem to notice me.......2001-04-03
I don't know, all of these concerts sound the same. You know what I mean. But, this one holds sentimental value to me because I had to work the night of the show. I had been planning to go for months but it all came down to making a living. Funny thing, the next morning, I somehow knew that i would be able to get my hands on a recording of the show one way or another. Thank goodness for Pearl Jam's sensational idea to bootleg ALL of their shows-not just certain ones. And, Oh yeah, In My Tree is on this album. Just one more reason to buy it. Also, Eddie is from San Diego in case you didn't already know. Great show.

Deep Purple - 'Live At The California Jam' (BMG).......2007-05-31
Recorded on April 6, 1974. When I first got this CD like a month ago, I wasn't aware that ace guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was still in the band. This was apparently the 'MK 3' Deep Purple line-up. Was amazed at just how well new vocalist David Coverdale had filled in Ian Gillan's shoes. Tracks that have me keeping this disc in my current rotation stack for awhile were the powerful opener "Burn", the catchy "Might Just Take Your Life", the total *ss-kicking "Smoke On The Water" (sounds different with Coverdale on vocals, but still good) and the 18-minute "You Fool No More" (great keyboard and guitar solos). Also like the extended 24-minute wailing "The Mule / Space Trucking". Okay, I admit it, every cut on this CD rips. Line-up: David Coverdale-vocals, Ritchie Blackmore-guitar, Glenn Hughes-bass, Jon Lord-keyboards and Ian Pace-drums. Comes with nifty twelve-page booklet. Essential listening.
Mixed bag.......2005-06-09
There are some very good songs here (That from the Burn album) but those from Mark II (Smoke on the water and the endless Space Truckin') are badly played, which prevents this recording from getting more than 3 stars, alongside the poor quality sound. Then I'm talking about the video version - the only one I have found.
-Burn. Awesome and harder version than the studio cut. Glenn Hughes (as elsewhere on this video) sings far better than the hoarse David Coverdale. The first bits of Blackmore' solo can be seen but soon this obnoxious lad comes forward, keeping his guitar from view. Jon Lord plays a gorgeous solo.
-Might just take your life. Whoever being dumb enough to claim Deep Purple were a heavy rock band should pay attention to this song to realize their error. Lord's intro may be one of his finest. David's vocals are again too lazy but Glenn Hughes saves the day...again. Jon Lord's solo is short but incredible.
-Mistreated. No bitching about Coverdale's voice here. The band turns on one of their best performances here. Ritchie shows how comfortable he feels playing blues. His intro is stunning.
-Smoke on the water. After a very short blues by Blackmore, their biggest classic is somehow trashed by the last vocal part. Glenn Hughes really screws up with his improvisations. They should have left the song alone, with its entire lyric and organ solo by Lord but unfortunately they seem to feel like f****** it up. Sadly they succeed.
-You fool no one. The first part is Jon Lord's solo, with bits of Lazy. Needless to say he rocks one more time. After this the whole band kicks in with You fool no one, only to stop to let Ritchie Blackmore do his part. Incredible playing, very fast and hard in the beginning, to return to blues one more time. Goes to show how much he loves it. The group goes back to You Fool No One and then Ian Paice does an incredible drum solo, as only he can. The song ends with The Mule melody.
-Space Truckin'. Dull as dust. Overlong, with weak vocals and the dumbest thing I've ever seen Ritchie do. Why the smashing and burning thing? Does he believe he is Pete Townshend or Jimi Hendrix? No, he ain't, so he should have retained his own style, with which these samples of behaviour are definitely at odds. A big embarrasment, to say the least. When I play this video I skip both Smoke on the Water and Space Truckin'.
In a nutshell: when it's good it's very good but when it's not, it sucks.
3/5.
you re idiots ! deep purple is a good band!.......2004-11-13
I found this live version on DVD format Deep Purple - California jam 1974. you will see how good the band was !!!! you will see how Blackmore smashed his stratocaster neck to the ABC Camera....and then he burned the cables on stage with fire.
buy the DVD format dudes! buy it!!
Pay attention, people..this is the BOGUS recording.......2004-01-26
The infamous Deep Purple California Jam appearance in 1974 has
been sought after ever since it was recorded. In recent years,
three different sources of the concert audio have been released and this is the worst of the trio. It was recorded from the ABC-TV "In Concert" video, and sounds hollow and flat; as if it were copied with a Radio Shack tape recorder and a hand held plastic mike. I don't know what everyone else reviewing this miserable disc is thinking, but the only decent source for this show has been released as "Just Might Take Your Life ". It's the original 16 track remote truck recording, which has been well recorded and properly mixed, mastered. Yes, this is a damned fine performance..but ignore all the ignorant kudos here; it's the worst sound quality of three different releases. Get "JMTYL" !
Blackmore rules!.......2003-09-01
Blackmore smashed his Stratocaster to the head of ABC camera. The camera man was knocked out and went away after the show. He retired today! Blackmore then exploded two giant Boxes and loud speakers on the huge Ontario speedway stage. Blackmore throwed away his guitar finally to the audience. All these furious scenes can be seen clearly in the video version of this live album: DP California JAMMING 1974.
Ritchie Blackmore is a nice guitar man, but that night he was becoming a bad tempered guitar player. Ritchie Blackmore is our guitar hero besides Jimmy Page (ZEP), Mick Box (HEEP) or Tommy Iommi (SABBATH). But once again, Blackmore became the hugest rock n roll scandal in 1974, the day he cracked his guitars after the long set Space Truckin. Coverdale and Hughes /replacements of Gillan and Glover back in 1973 were a very good combination in DP MK III line up. Need I say more? a Must for all DP fans around the world! Please buy this cd and watch the video footage "DP AT THE CALIFORNIA JAMMING 1974"! available at www.amazon.ukcom

Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This performance in Los Angeles in one of the most schizophrenic entries in the Pearl Jam bootleg series. Granted, much of this show is incredible. The band gets off to a roaring start tonight, with a surprisingly sinister "Sometimes" opening the show, followed by a non-stop slamfest in "Corduroy" through "Animal." The great performances continue into some of the tour's best renditions of "Light Years" and "Not For You," while "Betterman" and "Black" are especially effective and dramatic. Unfortunately, this bootleg does not quite merit five stars because of a horrendous encore set. Whatever was going so well in the main body of the show has come to a screeching halt after the encore break. Who knows what happened during the band's break backstage, but the encore pales in comparison to the rest of the show. Just about every song in the encore, starting with a horrendous "Do the Evolution," is full of timing and tuning errors. Most of the gaffes are from Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, who sound like they're in two different time zones and have no idea what each other is doing. Credit must be given to Jeff Ament, who turns up the groove quotient and holds things together rather well during the encore. So this bootleg is two-thirds brilliant, one-third horrendous, and tough to figure out overall.
Evolution.......2001-04-03
This was actually my first show and after listening to the album, it is quite a good one. It starts out mellow but then rocks hard right away with some fast songs. Light Years and Nothing as it Seems are highlights with a clear acoustic component, and on Wishlist he forgets some lyrics! Even Flow has some great solos and Black is just beautiful!
Do the Evolution is very high charged and State of Love and Trust is also a good performance. A little while before Eddie comments that they are playing in someone's backyard, like the Devil's Backyard. Crazy Mary is very mellow and a great, emotional performance. The Neil Young cover gets a rousing response because he played at the same place a few weeks before. I thought soon forget was strange to put in there but the last song Yellow Ledbetter was filled with beautiful solos and a lot of energy, and afterward I knew I had seen one of the best live bands that are still around.

Hey Boo-Boo, are you in there?.......2004-11-06
On some of these bootlegs, I can barely believe Mike McCready is of the same species as the rest of us. This is Mike's night. On Corduroy, Last Exit, Dissident, Nothing as it Seems, and the classic State of Love and Trust, he plays as though his fingers are being controlled by psychic purple space monkeys. I really don't know how else to explain it. On a song that has become one of his highlights, Black, his solo is unfortunately abbreviated, but as the song is bookended by State of Love and Trust and the Binaural rarity Parting Ways, no complaints here.
Aside from Mr. McCready's heroics, the setlist is as good as a set can be without Given to Fly, or Yellow Ledbetter- my two favorite Pearl Jam songs. Other highlights include the all-too-rare Footsteps and Indifference. Pearl Jam's always been a band about alienation, and if these songs don't illustrate that, I don't know what does. Another rarity is No Code's 'Habit', prefaced by one of the finest moments of Eddie Vedder incoherence of the entire tour. If you want to know what he says, just get the bootleg. It's worth it for the music, and you'll crack up as an added bonus.
One of the Better Late-Tour Performances.......2001-10-23
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. This gig in Fresno was 65th out of the 72 shows in the 2000 tour. Some of the other bootlegs around this immediate period show that the band was getting pretty tired, but this show is an exception, and is a strong, no-nonsense performance. Eddie Vedder was apparently sick with a cold during this show, but he assured the crowd that he was drinking plenty of fluids (most likely his usual bottle of red wine). The rest of the band is solid and commit very few errors, and if you listen closely Jeff Ament is barreling along with his no-nonsense grooves (the bass is fairly faint in this mix). Eddie's nightly joke for this show is the story of a Yogi Bear tattoo he saw on some guy's butt - one of the sicker jokes of the entire tour. Musical highlights include Mike McCready's extra-long and extra-funky solo in "Even Flow," especially good extended jams in "Daughter" and "I Got Shit," the opening sequence of "Interstellar Overdrive" into "Corduroy" which the band has nailed by this point, and the inclusion of "Footsteps" and "Indifference," both of which appear very rarely in the bootleg series.
A Jammin' Concert.......2001-03-30
Excuse the bad pun, I couldn't resist. I have been a longtime fan and when I heard they were coming to Fresno, of all places, I was in shock. Eddie was quite the humorist at this show. Being under the weather, he informed the audience that "the lead singer is on drugs (prescribed, of course); the worst tattoo he ever saw involved Yogi Bear and a guy's buttocks and introducing Mike McReady to Fresno, "Fresno, Mike McReady-Mike McReady, Fresno"
Of course, can't forget the music-which proves why Pearl Jam is one of the greatest live acts around. Thanks to Pearl Jam for releasing these shows on CD. Who knows if they'll ever make it to these parts again?
Pearl Jam Rocks Selland Arena!.......2001-03-29
This show was quite amazing. I finally got a chance to see Pearl Jam in my hometown. Eddie had a cold, though, and despite the fact that he flipped off God it was an ok show. I lost interest after that, though...

Customer Reviews:
Bad sound.......2004-03-10
I'd give this bootleg 1 star if it wasn't for the interesting setlist. It's nice to hear more Vitalogy tracks, but the sound quality on this bootleg is atrocious. Very muddy sounding, and much worse than the 10+ other PJ boots that I've listened to.
one of my faves.......2002-02-05
whipping as an intro is great and so is the rest of the show. NOt their best but still great. Very cool setlist might i add. This show deserves more than what oher people have rated it.
The California You Don't See in the Movies.......2001-11-26
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. In the 2000 bootleg series, the other shows in the state of California were all good or great. Unfortunately, this gig in Sacramento marks the low point of the American tour, and this bootleg is one of the worst in the series. The band could be forgiven for fatigue (this was the 67th show in the tour), but they're also guilty of extreme laziness and carelessness tonight. Also, this show is one of the shortest in the tour and is a good 20 minutes shorter than average, as if they just gave up and left. The band did attempt to get creative with the set list, with several surprises and rarities. The surprise opener is "Whipping," which really gets the show off to a wild start. However, the momentum is immediately broken by the dreary "Insignificance." This song usually works well in the middle of the set, when it's time to get serious, but near the start of the show it's a total party pooper. The momentum is never quite recovered, and this show descends into a bottomless pit of errors and a general "who cares" attitude. "Tremor Christ" is terribly uncoordinated and just sounds sluggish, rather than sinister like it should. "Immortality" is mostly successful but breaks down in the outro when the band attempts to improvise a little. "Rearviewmirror" perks things up slightly, but once again things break down during an incredibly sluggish encore. Even Mike McCready's outro to "Yellow Ledbetter" is dull and uninspired, instead of the blazing display of riffsmanship that it usually is. For Pearl Jam, this probably felt like just one poor night, and the bootleg series proves that they were great 90% of the time. But the people who paid to see this show in Sacramento should have demanded a refund.
better than in person, but ..........2001-05-08
i, too, saw this show and didn't like it. it was the worst of the half-dozen times i've seen pearl jam. i didn't like the set list, the performance was average by pj standards, and it was a short set. that said, the concert is a much better experience in the warmth of my own home. and the show is good -- if there weren't four dozen better pearl jam live albums out there. save your money and get the las vegas show from eight days earlier or the san francisco show from one day later, to name just two far-better shows.
short but sweet concert.......2001-04-17
I bought this album because (1) I was at the cold, miserable show at Sac Valley Ampitheater and (2) the version of "The Kids Are Alright" was one I'd never heard before from them, except at the show, fast and more true to the Who version, very very good. It is shorter than many of the other concerts, but a gem in its own right. The appearances of "Whipping," "Last Exit" and "Tremor Christ" are wonderful, welcome additions to their more recent shows, and "State of Love and Trust" is one of the most heartfelt I've ever heard, Vedder singing to a different melody, dragging out the long notes. "Last Kiss" is also great. So- if these are some of your favorite songs, as they are mine, you'll greatly enjoy this album.
