Album Description
In 1982, at the suggestion of the then Bad Brains manager, the late Dave Hahn, ROIR agreed for Hahn to executive produce and curate a compilation of the hottest young bands from the thriving NYC "thrash" scene. This compliation has become the most definitive thrash statement ever assembled and is today recognized as the "hallmark" for all thrash compliations. The original cassette released on CD with two bonus tracks. Twenty-four songs by twelve hardcore bands!
Customer Reviews:
thorough reminisence (which is good, I hope).......2007-01-01
I had this collection back in the day of "cassette only" ROIR releases, and it was my introduction to bands like Bad Brains and Adrenaline O.D., who have the best songs on this mix, as far as I am concerned. This collection also chronicles the earliest phase of the Beastie Boys (definitely, definitely pre-rap).
But aside from introducing some great names in punk rock, this collection also introduced me to the true insanity of punk. I was a beach-combing teenager on the Jersey shore, where you were an out-and-out freak if you didn't think that the Rolling Stones were the world's greatest rock 'n' roll band (and I didn't). I had dabbled a little in some Misfits, some Black Flag (I had played out the soundtrack to _Desperate Teenage Lovedolls_ to death on my turntable--why hasn't THAT one been rereleased too?), some Suicidal, and felt that I had gotten just a glimpse of what was out there. More importantly, I felt that others were privy to what the Jersey shore kept me alienated from. Odd to say, but the stuff I'd listened to so far seemed almost acceptable--my MOM even bopped along to some Misfits riffs.
I don't know how I had gotten a hold of this release from ROIR, or how I even got a ROIR catalog, but I did, and this was one of my first purchases with my paper-route money.
And wow...
Right from the start, The Mad kick in with "I Hate Music," which splits its verses with screeching noise and saxophones (would love to say that it was Zorn bleating his alto there, but no). All the way through False Prophets screeching, "I am the Taxidermist," this collection offered me what I had only previously subconsciously wanted--music that my mom couldn't bop to, music that others would sneer at when I walked along the street with my boom box cranked up. I would take this collection to the beach with me, and while I sunbathed, a halo of empty sand formed around me. (It probably didn't help that Adrenaline O.D.'s "Paul's Not Home" set my head to epileptic tapping.) I had to buy this release four different times, mainly because people would steal it from me. I'd like to think that I was spreading some punk virus in my sleepy shore town, but I really think that some Zep-head would pull it out of the tape deck and chucked it, insulted that there could be some non-Page-influenced sounds in the world.
This disc maintains everything I liked about my early discoveries of punk--poor sound quality, pure energy. Music that would disappear if you pushed your Dolby noise reduction button. I mentioned Adrenaline O.D. and Bad Brains before, but you'll also find amazing stuff by False Prophets, Undead, Even Worse (whose "Emptying the Madhouse" is also one of the best tracks on this collection), and The Mad.
So get this disc, and then get the soundtrack to _Desperate Teenage Lovedolls_ (don't worry, I haven't seen the movie either), then the soundtrack to _Return of the Living Dead_ (AND watch the movie--punk chicks stripping in graveyards!) and then play them all with your ear up against the speaker before retiring to watch _Urgh! A Music War_ or _Repo Man_. Then you'll know what the life of a shut-in punk in hostile territory felt like.
New York Thrash! (not trash).......2002-01-25
I gave this collection a 5 star. This is some old stuff but this is the way it was in the early 80's.Some of the recordings are just a little fuzzy but thses bands didn't have a ton of cash to pay for the high cost of recording in those days. Bands like the Bad Brains,Kraut,The Beastie Boys(no rap here!),The False Prophets, which believe it or not is still around, and Much more keep this album alive.Good punk and definitely a collectors item for all you punksters.
Worthy of Jay Leno's collection........1999-01-17
This is a wonderful collection of New York bands that played hardcore punk in the early 1980s. It's akin to the California stuff that was going on - Black Flag and Circle Jerks, for instance - but it's darker.
It seems the world remembers the New York hardcore scene as the totalitarian dictators of rock and roll, all music utterly fulfilling punk's ethos of hard, fast noise. But if you've heard that, you may be surprised to hear how much character these bands have. Its quality isn't terribly consistent (the BeastieBoys' two entries aren't exactly stellar), but the majority really shreds. I like Even Worse a lot, and Kraut is a monster. It's too bad they didn't do much more.
The compilation includes two alternate versions of songs from Bad Brains' self-titled ROIR release. They're not as good. Get their regular album.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best hip-hop compilations........2006-10-28
DJ Premier is Primo when it comes to comp lp's. This is the best underground rap comp I've heard. They sure are charging a grip for old DJ Premier stuff these days. Limewire Pro has all of it. It's very tempting. However, other sites such as MusicStack have some of these old comps for better prices if you're a collector. DJ Premier has many old school colaborations and comps worth checking out. My favorite projects of his are his colaboration with Group Home on the song 'Suspended In Time' and his work with Showbiz & AG on songs 'You Know Now' and 'Next Level' off the album 'Good Fellas', another overpriced OOP album. His compilation 'Crates' or 'Premo' series are also great. They're full of old school and some new gems you probably haven't heard. 'Crates Vol. 2' is the best I've heard if you can find it. Happy listening.
Great Mix Tape.......2006-01-03
Even though Premier doesn't lace the tracks on here, he definitely shows why he's the greatest DJ in the game. The mixing and scratching are flawless on this and the way it's formatted, you feel your listening to an underground show on the radio. With that said, the lineup is superb too. There's L Da Headtoucha, J-Live, Company Flow just to name a few. All real MC's, not the fake crap like 50 Cent, or I guess at that time Puff Daddy, aka Diddy. Great beats and flows, and great work of blending and mixing, which show's just how talented Premier is. And the one interview where DJ Premier speaks about how there are times where he's down to his last buck or so, and if it's choosing between getting food and getting a 12", he'd get the 12". That show's how much love he has for the game. I didn't quote it exact, but that was the gist of it. Anyways, this is a must have. Now, someone said they hope they get reality check 202, I think it may be out there. All I know is, I hope it's not like his Holiday Massacre cd. That sucked. It had 50 and G-Unit and Bun B. What the f--k? I hope DJ Premier goes back to cd's like this and not the Holliday Massacre, because this cd represents the DJ Premier we all came to love.
premes best mixtape.......2005-10-25
If you are a fan of Premo but you never copped one of his mixtapes then I suggest you start with NY Reality Check. This is hands down his best.30 seconds into the first track and you will be sent to the realm of hip hop.My reviews are my recommenddations.Im trying to get the best hip hop albums into as many hands as I can.The albums I recommend can be played from beginning to end. This one definatley qualifies.Bottom line.Preme gets a great line up of emcees and juggles the beats.WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED.
ThE StReeTS heAT!.......2005-08-10
One of the dopest compilations ever, mixed by the illest producer in hip hop. I highly recommend you cop this. Its with out a doubt one to keep in your car at all times.

Product Description
Bands of Outsiders, the Japanese pressing only compilation licensed from ROIR by Japanese label Beatink and French designer agnés b, captures the sounds of the seedy underbelly of New York City. It documents what Paper Magazine calls the sex-drugs-and-rock-'n'-roll" generation: the cohort of artists from the mid 60s to 80s once deemed degenerates but now considered legendary figures due to their revolutionary contributions to music. Featuring artists as diverse as Nico and Bad Brains, the compilation paints a complete picture of the gritty New York scene of yesteryear; the very scene that provided the foundations for todays rock n roll.
Bands of Outsiders is the soundtrack to Bande à Part, the photo exhibition presented by agnés b in both London and Tokyo. Bringing New York City to the world, the exhibit showcases the works of legendary photographers such as Danny Fields, Roberta Bayley and Leee Black Childers. Its a visual recording of the cultural icons who made the city great, revealing a new side to the icons and legends of pop culture according to Tokyo Art Beat.

This is Global Underground 007:New York.......2007-03-01
Not sure how this album got mistaken as the second Global Underground release? Anyhow it is the 7th and Oakenfold's second for the label (the first being Global Underground 004:Oslo).
This 2 disc compilation follows the tone set by his prior Global Underground album released two years prior in 1997. Another eclectic mix ecompassing many genres of electronica. Unlike GU 004:Oslo, this compilation is a little lighter on the drum and bass tracks.
I generally like the first disc over the second disc with the majority of Global Underground compilations. The opposite is true for this album.
Disc 1 is predominantly ambient mixes with trance. I found none of the tracks to be that gripping. Fairly ordinary...none are extraordinary.
Disc 2 starts and ends painfully. These flanking tracks are dreadful, especially track 1. The good news is that every track in between is really good. Mostly trance. Good trance that can be listened to anywhere and anytime with any mood.
Disc 1 gets 3/5 stars. Disc 2 gets 4/5 stars.
Good.......2005-09-01
the first 5 songs on cd 1 is worth the price. Rediculously good. CD 2 starts of good as well. but both cds are like you are driving along a really nice stretch of highway by a cliff, and all of a sudden you drive off the cliff. I dont get what oakey was doing half way through both cds but they just abrupty fall off and cease to impress or keep my attention after. I would buy the damn thing just for solar stone's day by day, thats the standout track in my mind, a standout track in my whole record collection at that. but that is just my opinion
yabba dabba doo!!.......2005-06-28
great oakenfold sounds! this two disc set is great trance that gets me movin' Its got the sound that made oakenfold his great name. this one, and GU:Oslo are some great oakenfold discs.
Oakenfolds best.......2005-02-07
This is oakenfold at his absolute highest peak. The thing that makes me mad about big name dj's, is that they take other dj's hard work and make it look like they did something creative. Well Paul Oakenfold is a sell out and he was a sell out from the very beginning. Just like a lot of artists. He's the lazy man Dj. He's their to bring you all the good underground music you're too lazy to get off your butt and search for yourself. That is what they're good for. This cd is full of songs of the absolute greatest progressive trance ever made in the nineties. They are digital symphonies. The second disc blows the first disc out of the water. from the very beginning of disc two with ambrosia's inside your arms to Deeper Loves symphonic paradise it is a seamless digital masterpiece, and that is no joke. This cd will make you CRY it is so beutiful. If i could only keep one techno album, this would be it. BUY THIS ALBUM
Good "Old Fashioned" Oakie.......2004-10-09
I'm actually mad at Oakie for quiting Global Underground and starting perfecto ( although i like most of his perfecto stuff ) because man i tell ya, this album feels like the real oakenfold as well as oslo. No commercialism, pure underground. I don't think it's lame mixing, yea it's a little dated, but it's still really enjoyable to listen to. Oakenfold only did two GU albums, and they are both brilliant. I don't know why he didn't do more. which makes you really respect the only two that he did. I not only suggest you buy this cd, but more or less command you, because it provides seamless progressive trance, with great tunes and a wide variety of different techno combined. Like disc 2 starts off kinda hard drum and bassy, and builds slowly into brilliant progressive trance. A must own set.
