This album pairs one of the greatest flamenco singers of today, cantaor Diego El Cigala, with one of Cuba's finest Afro-Cuban pianists, Bebo Valdes. With Valdes (father of the great Chucho Valdes) born in 1918, there's a 40-year age difference between the pianist and the singer, but they do a fine job crossing generations and oceans to discover the commonalities between Caribbean and the Iberian music, coming up with a romantic marriage of the two cultures using rumbas, guajira, sons and boleros. All the songs are classics out of the Latin music tradition, using just a handful of players in support. Valdes's fingers are delicate and prone to dramatic flourishes; Cigala's voice is pure flamenco in its hoarse intonation, cadence and emotional outpourings. The two masters make the union work by focusing on the drama of the love songs--"Veinte Años," "Inolvidable" and the title track are just three amazing examples--as fuel for some of the most exquisitely passionate music to come out in ages. --Tad Hendrickson

The result is a journey that discovers the essence of the Latino "love" song with connections to Cuba, Central and South America, and Spain.

Picked by New York Times critic Ben Rattcliff as "the best album of the year", Lágrimas Negras has had an impressive debut. The album has never been out of the top 30 since its release in Spain over nine months ago, achieving double Platinum sales status. Beautiful synergy.......2007-06-08

A unique combination of beautiful jazz piano music played by acclaimed Cuban Bebo Valdés with the sensuous hoarse voice of young Gypsy singer El Cigala. First heard them at a friend's house and could not wait until I purchased the CD for myself and to give to friends. Great selection and variety of songs. The nearest to perfect symbiosis I have ever seen in a collaboration between jazz and flamenco.

I suspect I am like many English-speaking people inasmuch as I first heard Cancao do Mar by Dulce Pontes at the end of the Richard Gere - Edward Norton movie, Primal Fear. I think it is very telling that I did just what many others did: I immediately searched for and found the title of this music and who performed it. I doubt that very much music gets the kind of response this music got.

Dulce Pontes has a simply beautiful, and very powerful, voice. You only need to hear her once to understand.

In Cancao do Mar, the composer takes an old chord progression and gives it a new life totally unlike anything before. The new melodic directions are pure, inspired genius. I wish I had written this.

Haunting.......2003-10-18

Introduced to Dulce via Andre...I thought she sounded Arabic on his cd Songa...eerie, hauntingly beautiful. Like others I sought to find the woman behind the voice. She literally doesnt need music to accompany her. It was totally new and refreshing and somewhat fascinating to hear her voice. If you like to be moved by music, you will like Dulce Pontes. Start with Cancao do Mar...it transcends language.

Well,its been 6years,ever since I watched Primal Fear ,that Ive been trying to figure out the name of that very famous track ,was really taken aback to see that I wasn't the only one scouting for it.What can I say,the album is out of this world and for all those helpless people who have been trying to figure out the name of that song from primal fear ,it is called Cancao Do Mar.The name of the album is Lagrimas by Dulce Pontes.This song truly is haunting in every sense of the word.What a performance ,just inexplicably fantastic.Her voice is like nothing Ive heard before ,this has led me to listen to more of Fado ever since.Excellent!!!!

If you like passionate music this is it. Dulce has just introduced me to Fado, the typical portuguese music. Suprisingly this is a CD of "old" portuguese music, but old it is not. The interpretations are classical and modern at the same time they keep the best that this genre has to offer. In fact I've been buying fado cd's after listening to this one.

Dulce has the voice of an angel and the arrangements are first class. All the songs are good, period, but "Lagrima" in particular is beautiful. This is one of the very best CD I have in my collection.

If you want passionate music to share with someone over a glass of wine this is it. Higly recommendable!

first-rate recording from award-winning Concord Ensemble.......2004-01-18

This CD will amaze you from the very first lines of the opening piece, and the high standard of quality remains consistent througout. The vibrancy of the singing and production make it as close as you can possibly get to a live performance, with the advantage that you can play it again. (And this recording stands up to MANY repeat playings!) However, do hear The Concord Ensemble live if possible, because they are simply the best around at what they do.

The Victory of Santiago showcases a fine variety of sacred and secular works from the Spanish Renaissance. The ensemble's masterly interpretations of these works are always intelligent and musical, with exquisite attention paid to the nuances of text and polyphonic interaction of vocal lines. This is no pedantic, white-toned presentation of antiquated music, however. The singing sparkles with life and freshness, and the voices retain their individual beauty while simultaneously blending into a cohesive ensemble sound. The Concord Ensemble's rhythmic precision, intonation, and fluid legato are unsurpassed by any group I have heard.

The impeccable performances, excellent programming, and sumptuous recording quality make The Victory of Santiago a must for any lover of early music and/or brilliant ensemble singing.

Flawless Musicmaking.......2001-01-14

I had the great good fortune to hear this brilliant new (4 years old) men's a cappella ensemble perform, in a live concert, the very program featured on this disc. While the recording cannot possibly recreate the excitement of the live performance, the CD nonetheless provides an unforgettable musical experience. Their flawless command of pitch and their seemingly effortless support left me breathless. Chanticleer, eat your heart out! This is everything early music singing should be. Buy this CD, and their next one as soon as it is released, and do NOT pass up the opportunity to hear them live if you ever get the chance!

I agree that this is one of the best mexican movies in the last years, I love it! I own the cd, but I want to buy the DVD, I just bought the DVD of Amores Perros and I would love to buy the one of Sexo, Pudor y lagrimas but Amazon doesn't have it. Do anyone of you knows were to buy it either in the web or any store??

Ay Dios mio! I don't know where to begin. If you've seen the movie then owning this CD is a MUST! If you are into foreign films then owning this CD is a MUST! Trust me when I say that this CD and the soundtrack to Amores Perros is something that no self-respecting spanish speaker and movie goer can be without.

Por lo general no soy afecto a los soundtracks, pero este material es un reflejo de mucha calidad y demuestra la originalidad y versatilidad que tienen los grupos mexicanos en al actualidad; no solo por las compociciones de Aleks Sintek sino tambien por las Lost Acapulco y Los Exquisitos, que muestran la madurez y profesionalismo en su musica, aparte de ser de un ritmo bastante divertido.

A Wonderful Preview.......2000-11-14

For those of you not familiar w/ Helicon, they are a Baltimore based trio that specializes in spreading the joy and beauty of international music. The group consists of Chris Norman, a world renown wooden flute player (he does classical music as well), Ken Kolodner, an incredible hammer dulcimerist and fiddler who also happens to have a P.h.d, and Robin Bullock, a magnificent guitarist, citernist, and fiddler, who actually started out in rock music. Anyway, the group has since begun to explore other interests so they no longer tour together, but that doesnt mean that their music is dead. In fact, it is alive and well on this recording. Track 1 is played by Norman on a type of double barreled flute that makes it sound like 2 flutes are playing, creating a truly unique sound. The second half of track 1 has a much simpler beat, but is still just as pleasing to the ear. Track 2 is a pair of beautiful Peruvian pieces that begin w/ a simple hammer dulcimer rhythm, but eventually adds in complexity, until the texture is truly South American. Next, they move to Sweden, a country rich in its fiddling, and perform two polskas. Although this CD does these pieces justice, the way they perform them is even better (they move their bodies to accent the dynamic changes in a sort of call and respond manner). Track 5 finally gets to some of the traditional Irish and American reels that have begun to find its place in mainstream America nowadays. They certainly do celtic music justice. Next, "Mr. Pantaleish" is perhaps the most mysterious piece on this recording, and it is truly haunting. Track 7 returns to America, where they play an old American fiddle tune, and a tune that they learned from Freyda Epstein, a brilliant musician from Virginia. All in all, this is a great recording, and is only a preview of what this incredible trio would accomplish in the coming years that they toured together. You will notice that this recording almost sounds like there is a concert in your room, because the music is pure. There is only limited audio enhancing machines used which makes the music all that much better. I highly encourage anyone to buy this CD, and to also check out Helicon's recordings, as well as the member's solo efforts. You will never tire of this stuff.

...who gave this collection 5 stars, but i can unequivocally say that I play it time after time and, each time, i find something more to love about it. I wasn't familiar with Bebo and Cigala before--my loss. Now that I've heard them, they're stars in my world!

Goosebumps! A masterpiece. A beautiful mix Of Afro Cuban, Spanish, and Brazilian songs intertwined with a most soulful Gipsy-flamenco style of vocal. Both Bebo and El Cigala are masters at their craft that give more depth to the classic songs than they originaly had. It's holy!

Lagrimas Negras is one of the greatest albums of all time, you can not imagine how great this combination of a Cuban piano player (Bebo Valdez R.I.P) with a Spanish flamenco singer (Diego Cigala)sounds until you hear it.
I love jazz music and its actually my favorite style of music, but this innovation of music its just great, and the lyrics of the songs are beautiful too.
I saw the Lagrimas Negras Concert in the Auditorio Nacional of México, and i can tell you that it was the best performance i've ever seen in my life, in fact i cried with the "Vete de mi" song, i hope that Diego Cigala continues the history of this great music with Bebo's son "Chucho" Valdez, bacause finally someone is making something different and beautiful.

if you loved the buena vista social club you'll likely cream for these two too. what they are doing is ok for what it is but there's nothing "fusion" about it. it's simply a flamenco singer singing with an old tyme cuban ensemble. I should have known from the grammy nominations not to pay $75 to see this group at the conga room in l.a., but you know isaac delgado won a grammy and played the conga room so hope springs eternal....

This nostalgic crap like the buena vista social club is only for jive birds! If you want to hear REALLY innovative music out of Cuba it's got to be TIMBA!!!! NG La Banda, Charanga Habanera, Bamboleo, Paulito FG, Carlos Manuel y su Clan and above all KLIMAX!!!! Music of the 21st century awaits you in Cuba!!!
