She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
It's good.......2007-07-22
But I don't think it's all it's hyped up to be on the other reviews, but, I do like it to the point of keeping it. It's the perfect 4star rating.
Revolutionary times.......2007-05-14
I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.
Black Dove.......2007-05-13
Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.
makes me want to dance .......2007-05-07
I really enjoyed the CD, the musical selection is great and it seems very authentic.
Enjoy!.......2006-12-30
I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

Album Description
Floreando is the second CD release from Los Angeles-based Conjunto Jardín. Inspired by the group's 2001 trip to Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, Mexico, to participate in the annual son jarocho extravaganza Encuentro de Jaraneros, the new CD combines the rhythmic drive and virtuosic sparkle associated with the port city of Veracruz with the more rural, roots-oriented and percussion-flavored style typical of Mono Blanco, Son de Madera and Los Cojolites, Veracruz groups prominent in the current resurgence of jarocho music.
Bailable (danceable) is not a term often applied to son jarocho, even though the percussive footwork called zapateado is an integral part of the tradition. But from the first notes of the opening track"El Colás," a typically irreverent jarocho classic about a flirty guythere's an undeniable groove going on that's a little different from what you might expect, and substantially funkier. The upbeat, driving "El Torito" (The Little Bull) will satisfy fans of the group's first album, and its medley-mate "El Toro Zacamandú" (The Magic Bull) percolates with raw energy. But the CD's real surprise is in the slower tracksthe restrained, hypnotic chant of "El Coco" and, especially, "La Guanábana," with its almost classical arrangement and deliberate build-up and release that echos the song's lyrics of yearning sexuality.

Well, to begin with, the music is fabulous--an excellent purchase. The product arrived in a timely manner, in good condition. I am pleased--again.
Authentic son jarocho.......2004-11-18
On FLOREANDO, Conjunto Jardin is joined by Tim Harden on harp and jarana. Tim is the music professor/folklorist/father of Libby and Cindy Hardin, the leaders of the group.
Tim gives the group even more of an authentic sound, although this does tone down the almost rock-like drive of the group slightly compared to their first cd NUEVO SON JAROCHO.
Another change between FLOREANDO and the group's first cd is the addition of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jorge Mijangos. Jorge plays both string and percussion instruments.
Bright and Joyful.......2003-07-15
I recently saw Conjunto Jardin in concert, and the excitement that ran through the audience with their first chords was electric. Their first CD, "Nuevo Son Jarocho," was a delight with the group's strong musicianship and pleasure in their playful interpretations of classic songs evident on every cut. This CD, "Floreando", is equally enjoyable, with strong, pure vocals and that always-surprising Jarocho syncopation that will tickle anyone with a rhythmic bone in his or her body.
This is not straight traditional son, which includes a harp and uses string instruments for percussion. Conjunto Jardin has a wonderful percussionist from West Africa who ekes a world of beat from what looks like a wooden box. The harp is replaced by a keyboard (for most people, this is very hard to tell on the album) and then there is, of course, the fact that the vocalists are women. Libby and Cindy Harding's vocals are soaring and pure, and the bass and percussion provide the balance that is usually not included in traditional son where everything seems tuned and sung really high. The result is traditional music with a new kick
From the upbeat "El Colas" to the yearning "La Guyabana" these are multilayered, textured, infectious songs that stick in your head and put a spring in your step. Irresistible

Album Description
Released in 1998, Nuevo Son Jarocho is the debut CD of Los Angeles-based Conjunto Jardín. Updating and reinvigorating the lively jarocho music of Veracruz, Mexico, Conjunto Jardín is led by sisters Libby and Cindy Harding (the name is a play on the Spanish pronunciation of their last name). Their seamless sibling vocals - reflecting 25 years of singing together - are accompanied by Libby on jarana (small strummed 8-string guitar) and Cindy on requinto (a 4-string guitar on which percussive melodies are played with a long pua or pick). The sisters have played jarocho music virtually all their lives, starting as children learning from and performing with their father, renowned Latin American scholar and musician Timothy Harding. They have further honed their skills with trips to Veracruz and by studying with master jarocho musicians in Mexico and the U.S.
Around the traditional core of jarana and requinto, Conjunto Jardín features Gary Johnson (Sabiá, Word of Mouth) on incredible keyboard-harp simulations (Tom Cheyney, L.A. Weekly). Jarocho's African roots are highlighted by Benin, West Africa native Marcel Adjibi (Manu Dibango, Aster Aweke) on congas and vocals, while Rick Moors (the Bonedaddys) plays bass and Ricardo Tiki Pasillas (Marc Anthony) contributes percussion and gritos.
The end result is a lively reinterpretation of the style that respects jarocho's key traditions and captures its irreverent spirit with a fun, supercharged approach that gently modernizes the music while broadening its appeal.
Recorded by Ciro Hurtado and mixed by Larry Hirsch, known for his work with Los Lobos, Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt, Nuevo Son Jarocho caught the ear of Putumayo World Music, who picked up La Bruja from the CD for their compilation Putumayo Presents Mexico, released in April 2001.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic recording of mostly traditional Mexican music.......2005-03-09
This is a wonderful record of Mexican jarocho style music from Vera Cruz. They use traditional instruments as well as electronic keyboards and African drums. The result is an infectious modern interpretation that is faithful to the spirit of the music instead of being a slavish copy. Conjunto Jardin stresses the Afro-Caribbean roots of the music and even include a lovely song of African origin.
Veracruz music with African swing.......2004-11-18
If you live in California long enough, especially Southern California, you'll come to know Mexican music: you hear it all around you; it's everywhere. This land used to be part of Mexico and some days it seems like it's being re-absorbed.
Although the members of Conjunto Jardin are all veterans of other Latin bands, their backgrounds are not strictly Mexican: Marcel Adjibi is actually from Benin, West Africa; but his African swing and drive is an important part of Conjunto Jardin's sound.
The group specializes in the music of Veracruz, Mexico: an area unlike most of Mexico which had a large black African slave population that strongly affected the local music, known as son jarocho.
The famous driving Mexican tune is from Veracruz, written by a black ex-slave sometime in the 19th century.
Excellent CD.......2004-09-07
This is great music, the sound is old and new at the same time. It is a shame that they have not put more music out since this CD, it is music that is fun and makes you happy while not sounding common or cheesy. Five Stars!
it is a stunning success.......2002-12-03
one of my absolute favorite recordings! incredible textures, layers and colors. for that alone, it is worth getting whether or not you are a purist, whether or not you even favor the music from that part of the world. positively infectious.
A brilliant fusion of tradition and experimentation.......2002-10-30
Being a traditional Veracruz harpist myself, I was a little surprised (not to mention disappointed) when I found the album and read that the harp parts were played on a keyboard. But I had heard of the Harding sisters, and I know their father is a great harpist, so I plunged in. What a fantastic album. I know that there are purists that think the only harp is one with strings, but Gary's performance is astounding. I also play keyboards, and playing my harp 'pasos' on the keyboard is extremely difficult. Gary's agility with the pasos is very authentic too. Even if you are a jarocho purist, you will be surprised by the authenticity of this album, as well as pleased with the experimentational quality on such songs as La Bamba, where African elements are introduced. The Harding sisters' vocals are exciting and pure. The percussion and bass lines are well performed too. I submit that although this may not be jarocho in its most basic traditional form, it is nonetheless an evolution of the 'son jarocho' that delights and thrills its audiences every bit as much.

Vera Cruz and the Jarocho Sones.......2000-08-19
This is a sampling of music from the heart of Vera Cruz. I regret the 4 star rating rather than 5, but the big band accompaniment for Tona La Negra is too bright, too loud and does not complement the sweet melancholy of her voice. I have older recordings on LP where she is accompanied by a smaller ensemble which better accentuated the deep feelings in her song. The ensembles lead by Lino Chavez and Andres Huesca, are composed of harp, jarana (a small, 4 stringed guitar), guitar and guitarron (base guitar). The harp and jarana perform improvisations that are surprisingly complex: note the use of fugue, counterpoint as well as harmony while the guitarron keeps time. The track by Los Tres Ases is very rousing. This is a worthwile purchase even for someone unaquainted with this type of music.
