5 out of 5 stars Essential Performances from a Great & Beloved Singer.......2004-01-09

For those of us who grew up on Janet Baker's recordings (and were lucky enough to hear her "live" as well), the sound of her voice and her singular artstic personality - British restraint coupled with fierce emotional and spiritual commitment - are indelibly imprinted in our minds and hearts. The closest current equivalent is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, another superb artist who has charted her own course, and not surprisingly there is some overlap of repertoire, in the music of J.S. Bach, of course, but also Berlioz's Didon and Beatrice, Handel's Ariodante and Britten's Phaedra (composed for Baker).
This wonderful compilation is complementary to EMI's 2-CD "The Very Best of Janet Baker" -- no overlap of repertoire whatsoever. Unlike that set, which focused on concert repertoire (with orchestra or piano) there's a generous sampling here of Baker's operatic roles including Handel, Mozart, Purcell, Rameau, Gluck, and Britten. Also welcome is "Phaedra," one of Britten's strongest late works. And it's good to have the Berlioz: "Cleopatre" and "Herminie" complete, the big aria from "Beatrice et Benedict." (Why EMI included nothing from her recording of the last 2 scenes of "Les Troyens" is unfathomable.) The wide time-span allows us to hear Baker's voice in all its youthful, "sappy" warmth, as well as in its artistic maturity (though truth to tell she was pretty much a complete artist from the start). There are a few signs of wear in later items, nothing serious, in fact rather less than I remembered. I could have done with fewer of the "Arie Amorose" in favor of more cuts from her Gluck LP, which I believe has never been issued complete on CD, but that's just personal preference. The focus here is entirely on orchestrally accompanied works (or, in the case of the marvelous early disc of Ravel, Chausson & Delage songs, with chamber ensemble) so for Baker the supreme interpreter of English, German and French song you'll need to go elsewhere (the EMI has a fair sampling, especially of her Schubert). But everything here is indispensible.

Before their expulsion in 1492, the Jews of medieval Spain developed a rich and lively culture, including an exquisite repertory of songs called romanceros--and they kept that repertory alive as they settled in places as diverse as Morocco, Bosnia, Turkey, and Bulgaria. Lovely as the romanceros are, they would have languished as the objects of ethnomusicological studies and might have disappeared altogether, were it not for the efforts of gifted musicians like Hespèrion XX. Jordi Savall and his ensemble, fronted by the unique soprano Montserrat Figueras, just about single-handedly brought those songs to the attention of the modern public with this 1976 recording (now reissued at a bargain price). Disc 1 features a selection of secular music from "Christian" Spain--that is, the courts of Ferdinand and Isabella and the Catholic nobility. The music is elegant and occasionally austere, but Figueras, Savall, and colleagues give the livelier pieces a flavorful swing. Yet disc 2, which features the Sephardic songs, is the real drawing card here. It was in Moorish Spain that Jewish culture flourished, so Hespèrion XX performs the romanceros with Arabic instruments, such as the 'ud (the ancestor of the European lute) and hand drums. These musicians, rechristened Hespèrion XXI in honor of the new century, perform this repertory with more polish now than they did in 1976, but--just as A Feather on the Breath of God did for Hildegard von Bingen--this recording made its own little bit of musical history. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Like a religious experience.......2007-03-28

This disc is pure magic that transends and defies definition. It is time period music that has been rereleased to capture the magic of the original recording. Each song is amazing. The music creates a mood that is best enjoyed alone ,in private so that your thoughts can be elevated to the point of inspiration. Although I like both discs I prefer the one that features Sephardic Romances over the disc that is Court Music and Songs. Montserrat Figueras angelic voice lends itself to beautiful interpretations of these beautiful songs from the Age before the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. This ancient music is preserved and freshly interpreted under the masterful leadership of Jordi Savall for an authentic recreation. If you have never heard Hesperion XX check this one out, it is fantastic. Recommended for classical music fans who want to hear something different. Once you hear Montserrat Figuerras voice you will feel the inspiration and be hooked on her angelic voice.

3 out of 5 stars Dissappointing soprano.......2006-02-22

I was excitet buying this CD, expecting the quality of songs equal or better than
Begona Olavide and Carlos Paniagua on MA recodings. The music was fine but singing by soprano Montserrat Figueras was borderline annoying.

5 out of 5 stars A balm for any soul.......2001-01-02

Attempting to review a Savall/Figueras CD is a frustrating task. The arsenal of superlatives is so quickly depleted. Terms like 'matchless' and 'unique' might be used, but lack strict definition. After all, a 'matchless' voice needn't be a good one. Terms like 'divine' or 'angelic' tend to remove Montserrat's singing from the real and human. She's nothing if not human. Having been blessed with watching as well as hearing her perform, vouching for her vitality on a stage is easy. But the superior quality of her voice and presentation is so far above the mundane or common as to become nearly indescribable. Anything less than adulation for her seems to indicate shortcomings in the disk or performer. Neither performance nor disk quality falls short here. That she performs religious songs here simply adds to the power of her impact on the listener. You necessarily hesitate, cease other activity, and, if moved enough, drop to your knees in respect and admiration. Tough to do in a crowded concert hall, but the motivation is there. And this from someone who shunned listening to vocal performances for many years. Dame Kiri was one exception and Argenta another, but the discovery of Figueras was the discovery of a voice without flaw.

Anyone visiting this page must certainly know of Jordi Savall and Hesperion XX. You may, however, have missed the glory of Montserrat Figueras' voice. Make up for that lack right away. The selections available here are pitifully limited, but this CD is as good an introduction as any. Don't hesitate to sit and enjoy this music. The sounds received will be a reward to whatever spiritual sense you possess.

5 out of 5 stars Ten stars if possible..........2000-01-27

I agree completely with Stephan: outstanding performance. Montserrat at her best. If "Si d'amor pena sentis" doesn't bring tears to your eyes, what does?

3 out of 5 stars Historical re-release.......1999-07-20

Hesperion XX were pioneers in reviving this music, and collectors will value these recordings which first came out in 1976. However most listeners may prefer more recent recordings by Wimmer on Naxos, and Alia Musica on Harmonia Mundi which have digital sound and include Spanish, and occasionally Hebrew, texts and translations.

Love the product and received it record time overseas. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars A must if you love Mozart Opera.......2002-04-06

The LA Reviewer said it all and I totally agree. The sound is wonderful and singing top notch. A great discovery and a must for any opera collector. Mozart gets better the more you listen to his opera compositions - the set contains many of the outstanding arias not always done in concert but which are lovely and some rediscoveries. Also, our recent loss of Winbergh makes this a buy as we don't have alot of recordings of his beautiful tenor voice. This set features him on 4 arias and his Mozart singing is truly outstanding. This set of 5 CD's a great value and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Great CD but beware!.......2002-02-24

This has to be the ultimate compendium of these undeservedly neglected arias. Many of the arias themselves rival the most glorious moments in the operas, and some of them, particularly the high soprano arias, are highly-charged vocal stuntfests that have to be heard to be believed.

This set has much to recommend it but does have one major technical flaw. Every copy that I have heard (and that is several) has a skip near the end of Track 10 of Disc 1. It seems to be part of the master and many listeners will be able to live with it, but I do wish that producers would take the time to fix a defect like this for such a significant musical document. Purists beware!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-BUY treasure trove!.......1999-09-04

Can't get enough of sublime Mozartian aria music? This complete compilation of concert arias should be part of every Mozart lover's collection, especially as a supplement to better known opera arias. There are gems among the concert collection that challenge even the loveliest of Mozart's better known operatic work. I can't say this is the only version of the concert arias ever to buy... the more versions I hear, the more I love the different interpretations. But if you're only going to sample one set, this could be the winner. The singers represented are masters of the Mozart craft; one virtuoso piece after another - for five discs, each over an hour long! The arrangement of voices, mostly soprano (since they sing the originally castrati arias as well), is also wonderful; no one sound is heard for too long before a very different one takes its place to give a contrasting flavor. And they're all in top form: Kiri Te Kanawa with her trademark creamy mildness is followed by Edita Gruberova's agile, silver-haunted coloratura. Teresa Berganza, whom I usually link with mezzo roles, is a tour de force of golden warmth; her Ch'io mi scordi de te? on disc 3 (piano accompaniment originally played by Mozart himself) is magnificent and deserves special note. Krisztina Laki and Elfriede Hobarth were lesser known to me; both are quite fine, although Laki's crystal sweetness is stronger and more pitch-perfect than Hobarth's, particularly in the highest notes of some mind-boggling musical phrases. The final 1.5 discs are handed to the men; Gosta Winbergh sings the tenor arias with heroic beauty and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Fernando Corena as the bass-baritones are simply the richly toned legends one would expect. A very nice booklet with notes, lyrics and translations to each aria is included. It's a marvelous set; one of my favorite discoveries.

5 out of 5 stars they're at it again!.......2001-08-07

The players here (also known as Unicorn and Oni Wytars) are among the very few truly brilliant early music performers. Not for them the dry, desiccated path of passionless scholarship! Unlike almost every other instrumental early music ensemble (and I've surveyed a LOT), they display fully engaged, scintillating musicianship at every turn. Their unconventional performance decisions tend to cut them out of critics' golden lists -- most of this music shouldn't really be considered authentically presented -- but such objections go lame and impotent before the vivacity and improvisational panache saturating this CD...along with their MANY others!

5 out of 5 stars Musica en el Palacio de los reyes catolicos.......1999-12-07

One of my favorite cancioneros ,and one that I recommend to all.It is performed on period instruments, and it contains romances, songs from about the times of the "reconquista",instrumental pieces, pieces for viols, and solos for vihuela. One of my favorite pieces of this is track 14 Danza Alta by Francisco de la Torre,it's an intrumental piece for viols and recorder. This music that was performed at the court of King Don Fernando de Aragon. It is hard of finding recordings of Cancioneros at budget price so take advantage of this one...It's really good

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......1999-07-11

Another 4 stars, though I don't share the reviewer from Australia's reservations about the lack of rasp in the singing. Who really knows how these notes were sung? It's a matter of personal preference. Alround a very good recording but not "the definitive" version of these songs (we may never have that). There is a companion disc by Wimmer : Early Music - Sephardic Romances which, like this one, has Spanish texts and English translations. (Naxos) 553617.

There is also another recording of similar material on Naxos : Royal Songbook, by Thorby and Musica Antiqua London - but that is marred by lack of texts or translations. (Naxos 553325)

And a final recommendation : Music of the Spanish Renaissance / Shirley Rumsey / Recorded 1991 / Spanish texts and English translations. 550614

4 out of 5 stars Some very lively and lovely music.......1999-02-28

After centuries of Arabic and Jewish influence, the new music of Spain born at the court of Ferdinand and Isabella had all the strength of European melody with all the richness of rhythm and chromatic freedom of Northern Africa and the East. The performances by Ensemble Accentus do full justice to this music - largely because it and its director, Thomas Wimmer, have delved into and brilliantly performed the Jewish Sephardic music of old Spain. My only complaints are that there is not enough music here by Juan del Encina; and the singers do not understand the texture of old music. Most singers strive for purity and smoothness of voice and register, but the Renaissance loved loud, deep, rich, overtoned and raspy voices: voices with the sting of crumhorns and hurdy-gurdies. Here we hear some of the instruments played well, but not the larynxes which should accompany them. Nonetheless, a valuable and enjoyable CD for any fan of this era. [SW]

While the concept of rock musicians jamming with the symphony orchestra isn't entirely a new one, Vivaldi: The Meeting is in its own way unique. On this album, former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo journeys to Italian composer Vivaldi's homeland to take part in a seven-song suite that attempts to re-create a performance the composer supposedly gave over 200 years ago. Conducted by Lorenzo Arruga, Vivaldi: The Meeting joins Lombardo with several of Italy's leading contemporary classical musicians, including oboist Luca Avanzi, flutist Mauro Scappini, and Ottavio Dantone on harpsichord (which lends "authenticity" to a period piece such as this). More opera than classical, more rock than jazz, this somewhat grandiose experiment is surprisingly even in places. Lombardo's true colors come to the fore in "La Pena Amara," where he rocks out (if only for a minute or two). Meanwhile, his rock-schooled chops in "Part Five: Nel Profondo" sound downright schizophrenic next to the Baroque harpsichord and operatic vocals that otherwise embellish the tune. This odd juxtaposition in a strange way asserts the validity of the "experiment" after all. --Joe S. Harrington

    5 out of 5 stars magnificent.......2003-11-23

to see dave lombardo, the drummer of slayer, a death metal band, release a classical album is simply genious. he obviously wants to express to everyone that he's not just another metal drummer and that he also has feelings toward music and not just playing it to enjoy sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. it also tells me that he appreciates and realizes the genius toward other kinds of music other than his own. im very proud of him. he was always my favorite drummer and i knew when it came to slayer he wasn't like the rest of them. he was special.

    4 out of 5 stars Blistering Barogue!!!.......2001-04-25

Definetely one of the more "peculiar" CD of my collection.. I'm a fan of BOTH classical/barogue music and beat/percussion-based music, but MIXING these two genres as fluidly as on this CD seemed implausible... The incorporating of powerhouse drummer Lombardo's cuban-style percussion into Vivaldi's crystalline music somehow works seemless on this release, and they even get away with "jamming" on one of the Vivaldi pieces; even the soprano-singer improvises in the most joyful way!! You really get the feeling that they were having fun with old maestro Vivaldi, while respectfully aknowledging the genious of Vivaldi's art.

    4 out of 5 stars Uniquely wild.......2000-04-22

If your one of the few, like myself, who enjoys both classical and metal, this CD offers some nice ear candy. When I first read that Dave Lombardo was venturing into classical I thought I needed glasses, but as I read on it sounded like a really cool idea and became less hard to believe. As it turns out, Vivaldi blends quite well with modern percussion. This is a very cool CD. I don't think it will appeal to very many people, so it will probably remain in obscurity, but it may very well become a novelty in the cult classic realm. The only complaint I have about this album is I feel there should have been fewer vocal arrangements and more instrumental pieces. If your in the mood for something different, try this on for size. Just keep in mind that for most, it will be an acquired taste.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Lombardo and Classical?.......1999-12-13

Dave Lomardo has done it again! This CD is amazing! If your into drumming, classical music, or some wild experimentation, this CD is a must. I, myself am a metal drummer, I do not listen to classical music at all, but I still found this CD to be incredible. I recommend it to anyone with an open mind. Remember, it is classical music with Dave Lombardo, this means that some hardcore Slayer or Grip Inc. fans may be dissapointed, although as a fan of all things Lombardo, I was definately not dissapointed in the least.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart Heaven: Rare Jewels Of Song.......2004-12-12

This album, from the Phillips label, contains a wealth of rare and popular Mozart concert arias, ensembles and canons. For fans of Mozart opera and vocal music, this is heaven. The cover alone, with a soprano in a miniature opera house, is enough to seduce you. The music is sublime. Mozart had a gift for all kinds of music, period. In opera, in his day, he was the best. It's unfortunate that he died so young and so unpopular. It was not till years later that his musical compositions, which are in the hundreds range, came to public attention. The Phillips series has done a wonderful job of digitally restoring many fine Mozart vocal works.

On this album, we are treated to rare Lieder (written in German by the German speaking Mozart) with such talented Mozartian singers as Edith Mathis, Lucia Popp, Mozartian lyric tenors and baritones such as Robert Lloyd. The concert arias are both rare and usual. "Poppoli Di Tesaglia" is still recorded and sung, as is "Vorrei Spiegarvi O Dio". This is a real treasure and no fan of opera and Mozart should be without it. The vocal ensembles are extremely rare. Most people hear Mozart ensembles only WITHIN his operas- Le Nozze Di Figaro most notably has fine ensembles, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte and The Magic Flute. Mozart could write different lines and emotions from characters, have them singing at the same time, but the music brought it harmoniously and beautifully together. Some of the ensembles are reminiscient of English madrigals, only sung in German !! In the canons, we get a new glimpse of Mozart. Working with religious music for many years, he was able to write spiritual canons that remind us of how Mozart felt divinely inspired. This is a great album. I hope it gets into stock again. It would make a fine Christmas present.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent set from Philips.......2002-09-11

Well, not exactly every single aria by Mozart out there, but close. The performances are uniformly wonderful. Good news for the Mozart completist, eh? Life's too short to deny yourself of everything that Mozart wrote; go for it.

3 out of 5 stars For the completist only.......2002-05-30

If you simply must have every aria, alternate aria, oddball vocal work or canon of Mozart then this 8 disc whopper with a hefty price tag is for you.If you just want the main arias then the much cheaper 5 disc set-Mozart:The concert arias-with Kiri Te Kanawa and Dietrich-Fischer Dieskau is a much greater bargain and is of greater quality as well.If you want the Canons there is a set available on the Vox Box label. As for the goofoff and scatological songs you may be out of luck. Overall this is an excellent set but the price is steep. For the hardcore Mozart aficionado only.
