Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title track--Jack's fast-tumbling, falsetto-tinged lyrics jagging on hyper keyboard-sounding segues and Meg's pounding drums. They rarely shy from an idea, invoking acoustic Bob Dylan to frame "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues," but interjecting a series of distortion-laden guitar paroxysms for good measure. The end of Icky, on "Effect and Cause," is where Jack's trademark vocal warble and spare, quick acoustic strums meet Meg's single-minded beats. Everywhere on Icky giant riffs leap and shout, with Flamenco horns and those eerie bagpipes and rhythmic shifts and Jack's impatient vocal kinetics, marking new territories even as the White Stripes again populate them with vintage ideas. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
The White Stripes are back with the most bombastic album they've ever produced! While revealing the band's roots in American folk music, Icky Thump is an explosive, revolutionary assault that brings together garage rock, every blues style of the past 100 years, nouveau, and flamenco. This is truly a modern rock and roll masterpiece!
Customer Reviews:
White Stripes Best Album In Years - Rock N Roll Is Back For Jack.......2007-07-23
This album is worth the $9.99 price if only for songs 9-12. ("Rag and Bones", "I'm Slowly Turning Into You", "Martyr For My Love For You" and finally "Catch Hell Blues" are the aforementioned songs 9-12). "Catch Hell Blues" quickly became my favorite Stripes song ever and will really remind of you the older White Stripes album "De Stijl". But don't let my love of this 4 song block distract you from the rest of the album. The only "weak" part in my opinion are songs 3, 6, and 7. The bagpipe sounds like a good idea but I personaly hate those 2 songs.
If you are Stripes fan and love their older work you will love this album.
Stripes Have Faded.......2007-07-23
It's been almost two months now since Icky Thumps release and that time has not afforded the White Stripes newest any more favorable results. Let me first state that yes, I am a fan of the duo. However, with that said I do think that as a fan that does not mean they are immune to critisism. I will not just love "whatever" they (or Jack White) decides to put out.
I realise that these forums of feedback are usually fans who praise even though it is not warranted, and I just as much as you are always hoping for the best from our favorites but this White Stripes release does not add up for me.
I think the time has come for the group to stop worring about what their new "look" for the cover and current tour is going to be and concentrate more on getting back to the garage band idiology that started it all. In other words, bring back the guitar Jack. Yeah, "Bone Broke" and "Catch Hell" are where it's at, but "Conquest"?? Big mistake and entirely unlistenable. As is "You Don't Know What Love Is". I was so happy when the writer of the Village Voice made the comparison of this song with the one written by Bad Company called "Shooting Star". And the title track itself sounds much too similar to Rage Against The Machine's "Born As Ghosts".
Now to show that I am not being all "oh this is just someone who can't appreciate an artist branching out and trying something new" I will say that I think the tracks "Prickly Thorn" and "Slowly Turning Into You" are a couple of the Stripes best!
In the end however, I am dissapointed. It has not turned out to be the summer favorite of mine that I was hoping for. I am not turned off from the band, the prior releases from them with the exception of this one and "Get Behind Me" make up for any wrongdoing and I will continue purchase whatever they put out. Sincerely, Thumped.
Dig it.......2007-07-22
The new white stripes delivers on every aspect of music enjoyment. A good number of old stripes style tunes along with some cool exploration of new sounds. Jack rips, meg lays it down. Get it!!
fun music.......2007-07-21
see if you can help bu bb your head or stomp your foot to icky thump. really creative album lyrically and musically.
Not your mother's White Stripes.......2007-07-21
Pardon the title of this review. It seems as though The White Stripes remembered that Jack should shred, much like The Black Keys have been doing for years. (Sorry for the Keys reference. More people should be supporting that band.) The Stripes have made a creative blues-rock record. What I particularly love about this one is Meg's kick drum. This disc is LOUD! Fun stuff.

Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. With the help of producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, "Rehab" becomes a gospel-tinged stomp, while the title track (and album highlight) is a heartbreaking musical tribute to Phil Spector, with it's echoey bass drum, rhythmic piano, chimes, saxophone and close harmonies. Best of all, though, is the fact that Back to Black bucks the current trend in R&B by being unabashedly grown-up in both style and content. Winehouse's lyrics deal with relationships from a grown-up perspective, and are honest, direct and, often, complicated: on "You Know I'm No Good", she's unapologetic about her unfaithfulness. But she can also be witty, as on "Me & Mrs Jones" when she berates a boyfriend with "You made me miss the Slick Rick gig". Back to Black is a refreshingly mature soul album, the best of its kind for years. --Ted Kord
Album Description
Hailed by Newsweek Magazine as a cross between Billie Holiday and Lauryn Hill, British soul singer Amy Winehouse's U.S. debut, Back To Black hits the US amid a flurry of accolades, radio and TV buzz unprecedented in recent years for a young siren.
Her brassy mix of emotive vocals tinged with 60's girl-group stylings, sly funk, and anguished jazz, sparked the New York Daily News to crown Back To Black a "marvelous debut that would do Etta James proud" while New Yorker Magazine called her "a fierce English performer whose voice combines the smoky depths of a jazz chanteuse with the heated passion of a soul singer," and Spin Magazine affirming "there's never been A British star quite like her."
Back To Black smolders with a bristling fusion of old school doo-wop/soul inflected uprisings, (the charismatic singer/songwriter wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album) brewing instant classics such as the Shirley Ellis influenced "Rehab," the Supremes tinged title song "Back To Black," the aching "Wake Up Alone," and the album's closer, "Addicted."

Best Album/Artist of the Year! .......2007-07-24
I had to buy this album as soon as I heard "Rehab" just last month. I can't stop listening to this album. Every song is it's own stand-out. Buy this record if you love soul music and "smart" lyrics. I still can't believe Ms. Winehouse is only 23; you would think she was 43 when reading her lyrics or straight out of the the 1960's.
Astonishing talent.......2007-07-24
I couldn't agree more with Amin. Months ago, I saw her on late night TV and thought at the time: "Oh...this is interesting..." Unlike 100's of forgetable performers on TV, she stuck out like...well, like a sore thumb. The "Rehab" song was instantly memorable. But that's just the appetizer. I heard her sing "Back to Black" on Youtube at the SXSW in Austin with just her astonishing voice and an acoustic guitar and I could not believe what I was hearing. Who else sounds like that? Lauryn Hill perhaps...but Amy is Dinah Washington without the godawfull strings, Sara Vaughn without the sappy arrangements. The big question to me is not whether she'll be a big star. She already is. But will she live long enough to make more great music? OTOH, she's already "opening", if you will, as a kind of flawed diamond, certainly not squeaky clean- so she's not going to shock anybody if she falls face down in the gutter...but still, I'm hoping to hear more amazing stuff from this gifted young woman for years to come.
An artist worth checking out..........2007-07-23
After hearing her Rehab single,I knew that there had to be something else good on the album. Was I right. A nice mix of tunes. You Know I'm No Good,Back To Black and Wake Up Alone are the other standouts. Not typically my style of music, but this caught my eye. After one listen those songs stood out. I'm sure after listening to more,I will like more. If you are new to her like me and don't know whether to get it,I would recommend it. Very unique style. I give it 4 stars and may raise it a few after a few more listens. Check it out...
Gets some getting used to.......2007-07-22
I bought this on a recommendation from a friend in the Uk and I've listened to it a few times and she grows on you. Very different, good beat
Something new and different to listen to!.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD after I heard "Rehab" on the radio - I thought the song was catchy and different from all of the others songs you hear now. I was able to preview the songs before I purchased it, which was great! I have really enjoyed the entire CD - it sounds like "old school" music, with modern lyrics. It makes me want to look into her previous CDs and music! This CD is worth listening to!

Given the chart success of their Grammy-winning country single "Who Says You Can't Go Home," it's no surprise Bon Jovi upped the ante by recording an entire album paying homage to Nashville. In some ways, it's amazing they didn't do this sooner, given the way Keith Urban in particular is blurring country-pop lines, much as Garth Brooks and others did in the 1990s. To their credit, you won't find predictably shallow invocations of past country icons or any self-conscious, in-your-face down-home twang added strictly to remind the listener of the musical premise. In fact, Lost Highway isn't "Bon Jovi goes country" so much as a meaningful tribute to the Nashville ethos done on their own terms. They honor the spirit of the town through 12 simple, direct originals. The intimate, smoldering "(You Want To) Make a Memory," the ballad "Seat Next To You," "Lost Highway" and its roaring celebration of freedom, and "Stranger," an effective duet with LeAnn Rimes, all invoke country's spirit, and "I Love This Town," an eloquent nod to Nashville itself, ties it together admirably. --Rich Kienzle
Album Description
"Artistic freedom made this record possible," says Jon Bon Jovi. "Musical freedom to explore--and emotional freedom to express what was in our hearts."
The result of that freedom is Lost Highway, an album Jon describes as "a Bon Jovi record influenced by Nashville."
Bon Jovi explains. "Nashville is all about songs and songwriters. If you're someone like me who loves songs and hanging out with songwriters, Nashville is the place. I thrive on that feeling and I'm inspired by that creative ambience."
The result, a haunting set of 12 new and original sounding songs, is a stunning, multi-layered look into the nature of love and life in all its glory. Love, like life, is lost, found, forgotten and reclaimed in this collection.
The moods are many, but the core feeling is pure Bon Jovi.
"Writing this record with Jon was deeply cathartic," says Richie Sambora, who collaborated on ten of the songs. "I was going through emotional changes that were new for me. An ailing father. A painful divorce. The start of a new chapter in my life. I poured everything I had into this project, every last bit of soul at my command."
"For over twenty years now," Jon explains, "Richie and I have been close collaborators. Even when our songs create fictional stories, they reveal our states of mind. To a large degree, Lost Highway focuses on the light that love brings. When you shine the light on love, you see the chinks in the armor. You see every crevice, every crack. And that's all right".
Lost Highway is Bon Jovi's tenth studio album since the band formed in the early eighties. One hundred and twenty million albums and 2500 concerts in over 50 countries later, Bon Jovi is enjoying the greatest popularity in their history.

This is a great album. I really like Bon Jovi alot. What I like about
this album that the songs don't sound the same, like some other artists.
I would pick this one!

Country taste, but won't fill your mouth.......2007-07-23
Good songs, and most of country influence is subtle. Thankfully, this isn't really "The Country Album." A Pleasure.

Tweens aren't often heralded for their good judgment and excellent taste (Heelys--hello), but if any young starlet can redeem them, it's Hannah Montana. On this, the second soundtrack from the Disney Channel series, Miley Cyrus takes her cues from her TV alter ego, who has an alter ego of her own: Disc 1 features Miley as Hannah, hair-tossing pop princess by weekend, likable schoolgirl by weekday (see "Old Blue Jeans" and "True Friends" to get a sense of each episode's un-cloying sweetness). But disc 2 is the start of something new, as her friends over on the High School Musical set might say: Miley sings strictly as her spunky, truth-telling self. This yields a number of pepped-up pop tracks bound to vibrate through the walls of pink bedrooms everywhere--"See You Again" is a boy-centric song instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been in seventh grade and suffered a bout of bashfulness, "East Northumberland High" puts a punk spin on an I'm-just-not-into-you tale, and "Clear" bounces on a reggae beat while canceling any doubt about our heroine's ability to stand up for herself. Like Hannah before her, Miley makes the best of both worlds--this well-worth-it set, by turns rockin' and reflective, is a masterful example. --Tammy La Gorce

great role model; great singer.......2007-07-23
This is a young girl with quite a voice. My daughter (10) and her friends know every song by heart. Personally, I love the GNO (Girls Night Out) song best. Good Rock and Roll beat without heavy metal. Obviously Miley is a CW crossover hit as well.
Sorry gal, this girl's going to be around for a LONNNNGGGGG time. She's got talent and has everything working for her: good backing by Disney, great parents, music and entertainment contacts and simply put her TALENT. For such a young kid, she's amazingly balanced.
MILEY : "IM KEEPING MY BABY".......2007-07-23
Okay, dont even buy this. It doesnt even sound like her.
They have messed up her voice so much.
She wants to be hilary duff and DISNEY SAYS she is the next hilary duff but Hilary duff didnt have her voice changed soo much like this girl.
And that doesnt even look like her on the cover??
she looks fatter on it, though shes not!
she lip sings in concerts, this cd is nothing new.
Gosh, only people who are gonna like this are little 12-14 year old girls who wanna be a pop star. this album SUCKS.
yes the songs, or atleast a few, are good, THE LYRICS but her voice, no, just no.
I am not hating miley cyrus, I think shes pretty and all, but her voice is edited so badly.
listen to her sing on the show, with no music, as miley, then listen to her "sing" as hannah. It changes.
Gosh. she is gonna be out of style in a year or so.
Cause there is something fishy about her. I just know it.,
Can't get enough of this cd!.......2007-07-22
I love this cd! The first disc is 10 Hannah Montana songs. My favorite songs are: Nobody's Perfect, Make some noise, and Life's what you make it. This disc is EXCELLENT! The second disc is 10 song preformed by Miley Cyrus. My favorite song is I Miss You. This disc is EXCELLENT! You should buy this album! It is worth the money!!
Great Songs!.......2007-07-21
I dont know many of the songs on here yet, but I have a few favorites. I like Nobody's Perfect, Rock Star, One in a Million, and True Friend. My FAVORITE is One in a Million. Actually, personally, I don't really like the Meet Miley Cyrus CD all that much. I mostly listen to Hannah Montana 2. But, overall, I LOVE this CD set!!!! [...]

The first and second songs are my daughters favorites, but the whole album is great. It has been tested and popular with girls 7 - 13 at our house so far.

Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard

Love hurts sometime.......2007-07-23
I am glad Kelly got this album produced. It speaks to the hurt that so many of us feel when love goes wrong. The lyrics linger in my head and I identify with about 10 of the songs. I can feel what she must have felt as she wrote the words because they are my emotions too.
Clive needs to retire.......2007-07-22
Clive Davis had no idea what he was talking about when he told kelly they record wasnt gonna be a smash. Its been out for 3 weeks and it has sold just shy of 500,000 copies(which she will hit next week making MD Gold in only four weeks!) This cd has no filler songs on it. Every song is a hit.
From the Guitar roaring songs like "Hole","Haunted","Never Again", and "Judas" to the beautiful ballads like "Be Still","Sober","Maybe", and "Irvine" and the pop rock favs "How I Feel","One Minute","Dont Waste Your Time", and "Yeah". This cd is amazing! It proves that Kelly Clarkson isnt just a world class singer but and amazing writer, Clarkson wrote all 13 songs on the cd. This cd is a must have for any pop/rock lover! Kelly Clarkson has out done herself once again.
ps cant wait for the next record! Country here she comes!
NOT YOUR MOTHER'S AMERICAN IDOL.......2007-07-22
Bravo to Kelly for taking a chance. the songs are a bit dark and complex, but i found them extremely catchy and sing-alongable! especially love 'sober','one minute', 'don't waste your time'. kudos for letting your inner alanis out!
A good evolution.......2007-07-22
I like to applaud an artist that isn't afraid to create her own path and clamor for musical independance instead of following the trend of reproducing a radio friendly album over and over. With the publicized offer to trade songs for cash ( that Ms Clarkson quickly refused ) the path this closely resembles is that of Pink and as I believed Pink had the best pop album of last year so far I believe Kelly has the best pop album of this year. Ill be the first to admit I hate American Idol and it is one of the many reasons that I refuse to listen to public radio but this album deserves a listen. OF the tracks I have listened to most, I believe that Haunted and Irvine are the sign of whats to come from this talented artist. The only thing I haven't seen in reviews is how closely Kelly Clarkson's voice resembles Paula Cole and to be mentioned in the same breath as Paula Cole is one of the best compliments I can give a modern day pop star.
Fresh + classy + stunning = My December.......2007-07-22
Let me just say first off that I love Kelly Clarkson. Up until this album was released, "Breakaway" was my favorite album, with only 1 or 2 songs I disliked. Kelly has outshone herself with "My December". I completely respect her. Clive Davis tried to get her to put more radio-friendly songs on the album so it would sell more, and HE'D make more $$$. He even offered Kelly millions of dollars to put these mainstream songs on the album, rather than songs she wrote or co-wrote herself. But Kelly didn't give in, making her a real and true artist and Idol. She didn't care if this album didn't sell well, because this was the album she wanted people to hear...and for good reason.
The album is pop, rock, "cool", and unique, all rolled in one stunning package. Kelly has written/co-written every song on the album, with subjects from a friend's suicide to getting over an addiction. While the songs on "Breakaway" were catchy, I'm guessing some of them didn't mean much to Kelly, as she didn't write them (the exception being Because Of You). Here's my review of each individual song:
1. Never Again - The first single, and ironically the worst song on the album, although it is still good. It's a catchy little song with Kelly ranting at an ex. "You wrote me in a letter/You couldn't say it right to my face./Give me that Sunday school lesson/Well pen yourself away." My problem with this song is that it all sounds a little...forced, I suppose. 7/10.
2. One Minute - I love this song! With catchy, fun backround music and awesome vocals, what more could you ask for? This song is about how someone can feel so many different things in the short span of one minute. "One minute you laugh/Then the next you're slowly sinking into something black/I get the feeling that maybe nothing ever really lasts/...And you love, and you hate, and you wait, 'cause one minute goes fast." 8.5/10
3. Hole - Probably the most rock track on the album, Clarkson sings about needing some space to deal with problems. It's not bad, but nothing completely phenomonal either. "There's a hole/Inside of me/It's so damn cold/Slowly killin' me". 7.5/10.
4. Sober - STUNNING. One of the best on the album, probably one of the best songs I've ever heard. The almost 5-minute song talks about getting over any sort of addiction. The song has an almost soothing feel as it builds up to a rant-like climax. Fantastic. "3 months and I'm still sober/Picked all my weeds but kept the flowers, oh/3 months and I'm still breathing/Been a long road since those hands I left my tears in." 10/10.
5. Don't Waste Your Time - Like a better version of "Never Again". Basically the same idea, but a better tune and cleverer lyrics. "I won't take your hand/You'll only pull me down." Honestly, I haven't listened to this one a lot... 7.5/10
6. Judas - I personally think this is a real catchy song. A lot of people don't seem to like this one. This song is about a betrayal, either by a friend or a boyfriend or someone else. Kelly's vocals have emotion in them even as she shouts, "I didn't know, I didn't know/I couldn't see, I couldn't see/Never thought you'd forget me." 8/10
7. Haunted - I nearly cried when I first gave this one a listen. A friend of mine commited suicide a year ago, and it still haunts me today. This song captured my emotion using words. I love this song so much. "Where are you? I need you/Don't leave me here on my own/Speak to me/Be near me/I can't survive unless I know you're with me." 10/10
8. Be Still - I'm not very familiar with this song to be honest, but it's a very well-sung ballad. Beautiful lyricss as well. "Foolish one with the smile/You don't have to be brave/Every time we fall down/But we're falling from grace/I'll gladly climb your walls if you'll meet me halfway." 8/10
9. Maybe - This song is about...Kelly Clarkson herself. She's finding out who she is, and warning a guy that she is who she is and he can't change that. "I'm confusing as hell/I'm north and I'm south/And I'll probably never have it all figured it out." A mid-tempo song that shows off her lovely voice. 8.5/10
10. How I Feel - Whee! I love this song too. Catchy. I don't have much to say about it for some reason, but I love it. "Oh, I'm gettin' tired of beliveing/Even sicker of pretending/That it's not so bad, just wait it out/Oh, I think you're feedin' me lies again." 9/10
11. Yeah - The most unique song on the album, Clarkson calls this "Prince/Chaka Khan"-inspried for a reason. It may take a few listens to get used to, but this one's a prize. "Help me help yourself/I want to give it all to you but/Don't make me second guess, I don't want to play games no more." 8/10.
12. Can I Have A Kiss - Me likey, me likey. It kind of has an old-y feel to it, but then again the whole album kind of does. I can't put it into words. Anyway, this song's about Kelly saying that if she can't have the guy she wants, she just wants a kiss. =] "I can't promise forever/But I'm working on it/If I can't hold you/Can I give you a kiss?/Can I have a kiss?" 9/10
13. Irvine - I THINK...this is my favorite song on the album. Kelly's voice adopts a soft, high-pitched, dreamy-like tone. The whole song she is talking to a God, wondering if there is one and asking him about life in general. This was written during one of her darkest moments of sadness, and I think it is something a lot of people, myself included, can relate to. It's a simple, but stunning song. "Will you stay?/Stay `till the darkness leaves/Stay here with me/I know you're busy, I know I'm just one/But you might be the only one who sees me/The only one to save me." 10+/10
14. Chivas - Is a little hidden track, hidden inside the supposed nine minutes of "Irvine". It starts off with what sounds like a record scratching, and the whole song kind of has that old-record feel to it. Awesome. And, so funny. It's a cheeky little song dedicated to her ex who tries too hard to fit in. "You're too high maintenance, babe/All the time you spent trying to fit in/And no one even cares, yeah/It's so ridiculous babe, watching you turn as I burn." 9.5/10
15. Dirty Little Secret - I think this bonus track only comes if you buy the CD on iTunes. Not sure about that. This song is either about a guy who's cheating ON Kelly, or cheating WITH Kelly. I think it could go either way. I really like this song =] "You don't touch/You don't talk/You don't look me in the face/Your dirty little secret." 8.5/10
Overall...
The radio friendly songs: Never Again, One Minute, Sober [although I heard it's not doing well, which is a shame.], How I Feel, Can I Have A Kiss.
The showstoppers: Sober, Haunted and Irvine.
The worst ones: Never Again and Hole, but even then, they're not bad.
In conclusion, I would just like to congratulate Kelly for sticking up for herself and never letting Clive take over. YOU GO, GIRL!
I hope you found my review helpful! =]

What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
The Hairspray soundtrack will feature 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers that were created specifically for the film version of the hit Broadway musical - "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl In Town," and "Come So Far." Also featured on the soundtrack are the songs "Good Morning Baltimore," "Welcome to the `60s," "Nicest Kids In Town," and "You Can't Stop The Beat." The songs are performed by cast members John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and Elijah Kelley among others.
The Hairspray soundtrack is produced by Marc Shaiman and features music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. It features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney (Rolling Stones, Bette Midler) and Peter Mokran (Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera).
Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).

I couldnt believe it..........2007-07-24
I have never seen any previous Hairspray and I went to the movie with my mother and little sister on July 22nd and I went to this movie thinking "Oh, Great, Another chick flick". I was in the theater watching this movie and I started bopping my head and that was just to the first song. Further in the movie I started liking it...A LOT. And by the end of the movie with the song "You Can't Stop The Beat" I had become completely hooked. I mean this movie and soundtrack was absolutely phenomenal. I mean I left the theater practically dancing.
When the movie was over I went to the store and bought the soundtrack. It exceeded my expectations big time. I am not much of "Musical" liking guy but Oh My Goodness. It was amazing. John Travolta was sheer hilarity and I couldn't believe he pulled off playing a woman. But he did. I don't just recommend you see this movie. I sincerely urge and insist you go. I had to practically hold my knees from jumping up and dancing. I have listened to it countless times already. Don't Be Square, See some Hair(spray)
A New Classic.......2007-07-23
During the course of my 57 years on this planet I've had the opportunity to listen to literally hundreds of movie soundtracks. So I tend to be somewhat jaded because the classics ("Sound of Music", "Camelot", "Lion King", etc.) have set the bar so high that I'm condidtioned to approach anything new with a jaundiced eye. So imagine my thrill when I heard the soundtrack of "Hairspray" and felt that there was a new jewel to add to my short list. Marc Shaiman is a genius. I saw the show on the Broadway stage and loved it but I must say that this endeavor stands on its own. The perfect blend of exciting, spirited music and brilliantly funny and rollicking lyrics performed by a top notch cast that hits every note with the fun, wit and irony that Shaiman (and Scott Whitman) intended. I heartedly recommend this album to anyone who'd like to have a great time listening to music that will surely outlive us all.
wonderful.......2007-07-23
My daughters (age 5 and 11) went with me to see this and the next day we had to buy the soundtrack asap. We were trying to sing the songs from just seeing the movie just the once !
The songs are really catchy and the doo woops really take you back to the 50s and 60s.
I didn't saw the original version but was very pleased to see Ricki Lake in the movie and actually singing on this soundtrack. Gotta love the 'go Ricki, Go Ricki' at the end of the last track.
This is my families soundrack of Summer 2007 and we nearly know all the words already ! We are hoping the dvd will come out for Christmas.
Go see the movie and then go get the soundtrack. You will NOT be dissapointed at all.
GREAT SDTRCK.......2007-07-23
I have been a fan of the original movie since it was released, loved the musical on broadway, and now this just adds to the fun. Both the soundtrack and moview were great!!!

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

Don't listen to the naysayers.......2007-07-24
Wow, I can't believe how many reviews are negative on Vol. 3. It rocks! Maybe it's because I'm more of a Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne fan but it has all of their trademarks--strong rhythm section, great production, rock steady drumming (and just okay lyrics). I would stack Vol. 3 up against Petty's Full Moon Fever (produced by J. Lynne)--if you love that album, you'll love Vol. 3. If your feet aren't tapping to this music you just don't love rock'n'roll.
Just good music.......2007-07-23
I always loved George Harrison and seeing him in the DVD that came with this compilation was awesome. How can you go wrong with Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison? They are having such fun and enjoyed playing together - it comes across in the music.
Traveling Wilburys.......2007-07-23
This was an excellent purchase. Enjoyed every song on the 2 CDs. Also enjoyed watching the DVD. Was worth every penny.
Finally available after being out of print for way too long.......2007-07-21
Three years ago I snapped up "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3" from a used CD bin, and I couldn't believe my luck, as both Traveling Wilburys CDs had been out of print for many years, for some incomprehensive reason, as those albums are a treasure of American music. Now finally comes the long-overdue restauration of that.
"The Traveling Wilburys Collection" brings the 2 albums, with bonus tracks, and a DVD. "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 1" (10 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, 42 min.) brings the beginning olf this super-star band, starting off with the irresitable "Handle With Care", originally contemplated as a George Harrison B-side for one of his "Cloud Nine" album singles. There is hardly a bad track on here: "Last Night", "Tweeter and the Monkey Man", and my all-time favorite "End of the Line" are among the highlights. "Margarita" is the only weak track. The (previously unreleased) bonus tracks, "Maxime" and "Like a Ship" are outstanding. "Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3" (11 tracks, plus 2 bonus tracks, 42 min.) even goes one better, in my book. From the stellar opener "She's My Baby", to "Inside Out", "Where Were You Last Night" to the rousing and irresistable "Wilbury Twist", it is just magic. The bonus tracks "Nobody's Child" and a cover of "Runaway" are quite nice, but not as good as the regular album tracks. I know that many music fans are not as fond of "Volume 3" due to Roy Orbinson not being part of it, but for me, it is the better, tighter, sounding album of the two. I absolutely love "Volume 3".
The DVD starts with a fascinating 40 min. documentary of the band's early days, bringing a blow-by-blow visual account of how most of the first album's tracks came about. What strikes is how great all those super-stars got along, egos were clearly checked at the door. It also brings the 5 videos the band did for the 2 albums, nice but not as good as the documentary. The liner notes are not that great, primarily a fictional history of the Wilburys, but no lyrics of the songs or detailed recording details. But that is a minor quible. This collection is a terrific slice of Americana, whose reissue was LONG overdue. Essential in every way.
A Great Set.......2007-07-19
This is a must have for any Traveling Wilburys fan.
The DVD is great shows some really nice home movies, about the making of the albums.

Sometimes it's O.K.--even important--to put aside your reluctance to embrace artists who make teenage girls scream. It happened in 2006, when Justin Timberlake scraped the sludge off pop and left something shiny behind, and it's happening again in 2007 with Maroon 5. It Won't Be Soon Before Long, the L.A. band's sophomore studio disc, rode in on a crest of hype and crumpled expectations--fan reports had it that Adam Levine & Co. scrapped their signature pop-soul sound for something harder and darker. Not so. Shades of Prince, Hall & Oates, and Sting still color the Maroon sound (check out the spectacularly fizzy "Little of Your Time," as well as the first single, "Makes Me Wonder," a song catchier than fire), but they're made ever fainter here by the clamping down of five guys on what is essentially the most distinctive pop sound to emerge from a single band since the Bee Gees squealed into the mid-'70s. It Won't Be Soon squares hip-hop sensibilities ("Wake Up Call") with rock ones ("If I Never See Your Face Again") and stormy moods ("Can't Stop") with bittersweet ballads ("Better That We Break"). It's a disc destined to defy detractors and go on to greatness, elevating the credibility of teenage girls for years to come. --Tammy La Gorce

Global neo-soul rock superstars Maroon 5 are back with their much-anticipated sophomore album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The follow-up to the 10x platinum, Grammy-winning Songs About Jane will be "sexier and stronger," according to frontman Adam Levine, who looked to '80s icons such as Prince, Michael Jackson, and Talking Heads for inspiration. Recorded at home in Los Angeles with producers Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Eminem), Mark "Spike" Stent (Bjork, Keane, Gwen Stefani), Mark Endert (Madonna, Fiona Apple), and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Nickel Creek), the album promises to be a louder take on the pop sounds of their first effort. "It's definitely aggressive, upbeat and pounding," says Levine.

It's a creeper!.......2007-07-21
This is my pick for best new album of 2007. To date at least. Initially, I wasn't a big fan, certainly didn't think much of the first single, but I love it now! The album has it's trademark up tempo songs and not to forget, the wonderful ballads of love and heartache.
Standouts for me are "Back at your Door", a cruisy, bluesy awesome track, "Not Falling Apart", "Little of your Time", "Can't Stop", "Until You're Over Me" (bonus track on Australian release) "Infatuation" (another bonus track) and I have to say, "Makes Me Wonder" has really grown on me too.
There is a song here for everyone to relate to, and a song for every mood. I haven't stopped listening to it since it's release. I love it!
Do yourself a favour and buy it :-)
Not So Much.......2007-07-20
This CD is not what I had expected it to be. I enjoy listening to most of the CD but there are some songs that I choose to skip.
I LOVE THIS CD!.......2007-07-19
This CD is wonderful, I promote it to everyone I know that might like Maroon 5
Pleasant Surprise.......2007-07-18
This cd is slightly different in music style than Maroon 5's first cd, but I am enjoying it nonetheless. If you are currently a Maroon 5 fan than this cd will not dissapoint you!
It Won't Be Soon Before Long - Absolutely No Songs About Jane.......2007-07-15
So they're a pop band...some even call them a "boy band". But, so what as long as they play good music? Judging a book by its cover was never the best way to draw a conclusion.
Musically speaking, this record is way much better than "Songs About Jane" in my opinion. It is clear that songs are now arranged and played in a more careful and sophisticated way. My picks are: "Nothing Lasts Forever", "Can't Stop", "Not Falling Apart" and "Back at Your Door". My guess is that if you hear at least these four tracks, you will notice a better and more mature Maroon 5, going to the right way and making their evolution.

Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. California musicians Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar) complete a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski

The Smashing Pumpkins are back! After seven years, the acclaimed Pumpkins have returned with Zeitgeist. Featuring the single "Tarantula," this new sound is not to be missed.

Excellent.......2007-07-23
This is an excellent album. Smashing pumpkins in very fine form. And being now a christian, its very interesting to see Jesus stiring up Billy's soul.
Will seem mediocre to fans & really awful to non-fans.......2007-07-23
I became a pumpkins fan at the height of their popularity, i.e., right after Mellon Collie came out. More specifically, I saw the Tonight, Tonight music video and was really impressed. I'm still impressed with what the band accomplished. Their massive hits like Today & 1979 are just as great to listen to now as they were over a decade ago. I could sit and listen to their first four albums from start to finish and never get bored. Then came Machina! It has a few good songs, but nothing a non-fan would ever want to listen to. This album is even worse, but it has one song - Tarantula - that a non-fan might want to hear. Sad to say, but Billy needs another major shift in his sound. He also needs to pump up the sound and drown out his voice. Maybe he always sounded this bad, but we couldn't tell in the early days because the awesome music drowned out his high-pitched voice. My great dissapointment is that there are no songs here that a fan can privately enjoy, the type of song like Mayonaise or Muzzle that the fans can love but won't get much radio play. Tarantula is the only song of quality here, and it's for the radio - not the fans. For that, I am greatly disappointed.
Great album .......2007-07-23
Love this album, kills the new velvet revolver album. Good ole 90's rock is back.
Smashing Who? .......2007-07-23
So Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin are back and the Pumpkins have reformed. Um, not quite. Corgan and Chamberlin were in ZWAN (the band Corgan formed after the Pumpkins disbanded). So now those two are back, still without James Iha or D'arcy Wretzky and somehow they are the Smashing Pumpkins again? How is it not obvious to see that ZWAN bombed and Corgan is trying to attach a more proven and marketable label to his new band ( which I refuse to call the Smashing Pumpkins ) purely for marketing purposes.
Zeitgeist is a bore from beginning to end. A collection of generic one dimensional songs lacking in the signature sound Corgan was once known for. Don't expect the brilliance of previous Pumpkins records to shine through at all here. Like a prize fighter past his prime stepping back into the ring, the result is a sad, tired display of a once great band who's unique sound captured our undivided attention. 90's rock is not back. It's 2007. re-heated leftovers aren't anything to be excited about. Instead of desperately trying to cling to the days of your youth, take a step forward and discover something new

At least the Pixies admitted they needed the money.
Awesome.......2007-07-23
Great album, some serious rocking songs, some poppy ones, some mellow ones. Just like classic SP. I listened to this at least once a day.

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Now that's the kind of magic you want from musicals. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

A movie not to miss.......2007-07-24
Story - acting - music - vocals. Each of these elements one their own is outstanding, and when they are put together it creates a phenomenal movie. If you haven't seen it yet you are denying yourself a great experience.
well worth a listen.......2007-07-23
Although the movie "Once" is not very well known, I am recommending it, followed by purchasing the CD to all my friends. I play it all the time and because I saw the movie I think the emotionality of the music comes through loud and clear. It's a great CD and I look forward to hearing more from Glen Hansard and Maketa Irglova.
Once I found it I had to have it........2007-07-22
This soundtrack is not widely available over this side of the Atlantic, despite the location, nationality of cast and crew. Fantastic vocal and impressive instrumental work produce songs that stay with you having heard them just once.
WoW!!!.......2007-07-19
I really enjoyed the movie. So I came home and had to get this album. If you like Damien Rice, then you will enjoy this album. I really love tracks 2 and 7.
Once.......2007-07-19
We really liked the movie and were moved by the songs and the chemistry between the two leads. We especially liked about the first 7 or 8 songs. I'd recommend seeing the movie to really appreciate the music.
