When they exploded out of the gates on their 2004 debut, Contraband, Velvet Revolver were met with as much diffidence as appreciation. After all, supergroups have tended to detonate as often as succeed, and with vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Duff McKagan, and guitarist Slash all vying to keep the lit match away from the fuse, the odds against this band ever seeing album #2 were even money at best. Surprise! Not only have Velvet Revolver survived three years with unreckless abandon, this album blows the doors off its predecessor. Save a pair of disinfected ballads ("The Last Fight," "Gravedancer"), Libertad is all about hand-grenade chords, drag-racing riffs, and circus-tent choruses. The ageless McKagan and Slash continually gun for the disorderliness of their former band (most notably on the punkish opener "Let It Roll" and its lewd brother "Spay"), while Weiland sounds--knock on wood--positively clean and like a voice of boisterous renewal on tracks like "Mary Mary," "She Builds Quick Machines," and the melt-in-your-mouth cover of ELO's "Can't Get It Out of My Head." Obviously egos have been checked at the studio door, as Velvet Revolver have already exceeded their anticipated existence. And now that existence goes back on the clock, trying to outshine a second album that's head-and-shoulders better than the first. --Scott Holter

Surprisingly Good.......2007-07-23

I have been saying since about 1997 that Scott Weiland's voice was finished. He lost his voice BADLY following the STP "Purple" album, and never seemed to fully regain it. I guess the drugs really took their toll on his vocal chords. I'll also note that I wasn't too keen on the first Velvet Revolver CD. I don't want to sound like a broken record with the rest of the reviews, but they did NOT sound in sync.

I wasn't expecting any more from this Sophomore effort than a whiny, broken down Weiland singing, over Guns N' Roses music, that sounds nothing like GN'R in their prime. However, I was actually very surprised to see I was wrong. Not only wrong, but very wrong.

Libertad is actually a very good album. First off, the band actually came up with some melodic hooks, rather than just flat out jams. Secondly, Scott Weiland's voice sounds better than it has since 1994. Granted, he's not wailing like he was on "Core" and "Purple", but his voice sounds the best it has since. I don't know what happened; maybe it's the sobriety and detox, but his voice sure made one heck of a comeback.

If you have given up on Weiland like I had, do yourself a favor and give him one more shot. It'll be worth your effort.

Didn't like it, maybe 2 tracks are listenable. Smashing Pumpkins new album is far better, but has lower ratings on Amazon.

Good, solid affair if nothing truly stellar; 3 ½ Stars.......2007-07-23

Velvet Revolver is an admirable band for the simple fact that they are keeping the traditionalist, hard-rocking sound alive where other bands are opting for different avenues for rock. In some ways, the fact that Velvet Revolver have such a throwback appeal also might set them back from having a huge audience. While this probably should've hindered their first album, CONTRABAND, it worked in their favor as CONTRABAND debuted easily at No.1 with 256,000 copies and went on to sale a cool two million copies, hence garnering double-platinum certification. As much as you wish LIBERTAD could be just as commercially successful, especially following all of front man Weiland's problems of drugs, and crazy marital issues (for lack of a better phrase amid the rumors), you know that LIBERTAD will be a clear mark of the sophomore effect. Unfortunately, it was more of an effect than one expected as LIBERTAD slid on the Billboard 200 Charts at an impressive enough #5 bow, but with a tepid 92,000, down 164,000 copies from CONTRABAND opening. Despite cool receptions from buyers as well as radio ("She Build Quick Machines" isn't a radio hit by any means despite being top-notch), quality isn't sacrificed on LIBERTAD. Sure, there are a couple of "clunkers", but even the worst is never horrible and always minimally average. LIBERTAD is a strong album with a couple of flaws that don't really affect it that much.

"Let It Roll" gets things rolling for Revolver, and very well I might add. It's the perfect duration at only 2:32 and I guarentee if you buy this album you won't be able to stop listening to it. Weiland sounds exceptionally well here and the driving guitars coupled with the rockin' drum groove is 'in the pocket' as jazz musicians would say. "She Mine" isn't quite a stellar for me as "Let It Roll", but it is definitely a standout from this set. "Get Out The Door" is solid, though not stellar by any means while the underrated but great "She Builds Quick Machine" is Revolver at their best. Three more strong tracks follow in my eyes via "The Last Fight", my favorite of the bunch "Pills, Demons & Etc", and the straightforward "American Man" which truly does embody being 'the American Man' of which Weiland so convincingly sings about.

Following "American Man", the album cools down for a couple of numbers. Despite the slight downgrade in quality, nothing at all is horrible or as I stated earlier less than average. "Mary Mary" and "Just Sixteen" are solid, but not truly memorable when stacked against the best of LIBERTAD. "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" brings the album back to the quality instilled with such undisputed hits as "Let It Roll" or "She Builds Quick Machines". "For A Brother" seems like a backstep after "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" while the incredibly addictive "Spay" makes up for any missteps. "Gravedancer" isn't the 'finale' is should be (though it is solid), but the embedded hidden track makes it worth it.

Overall, LIBERTAD isn't 2007's best album and perhaps not even its best rock album, but it is certainly a contender and is deserving of any and all accolades that it receives. I personally enjoyed it and I hope anyone who buys it will enjoy it as much as I did. 3 ½ stars in my eyes.

Libertad is borderline Masterpiece........2007-07-23

Velvet Revolver are a very talented group of musicians. It's hard to come to any other conclusion after listening to this album all the way through. Each song makes the word "epic" more and more obsolete. Whereas in Contraband, each song was similar to the last (which was OK because the album as a whole was great), Libertad brings something different to the table 13 times in a row. From the funky riffs of "She Mine," to the plaintive, yet hopeful ballad "The Last Fight," and everything before, after, and in-between, this entire album rocks. The band has really formed a cohesive group that plays as a single entity now, and its overwhelmingly evident in how smooth and functional, yet somehow groundbreaking, this album manages to be. I could just rant on and on about the virtues of Libertad, but I wouldn't be doing it justice. Instead, if you like rock n' roll at all, I leave you with three simple words: Buy This Album.

This band has truly come together.......2007-07-21

Always a big fan of GnR and STP. The boys in Velvet are a talented bunch.
I was impressed with their first album and had high hopes for Libertad. It's safe to say the album has far exceeded all expectations. You can really tell this band has started to gel. I think the vocals are supreme and the guitar work is extraordinary. Not a bad track on the album.

Revolver wouldn't remain the Beatles' most ambitious LP for long, but many fans--including this one--remember it as their best. An object lesson in fitting great songwriting into experimental production and genre play, this is also a record whose influence extends far beyond mere they-was-the-greatest cheerleading. Putting McCartney's more traditionally melodic "Here, There and Everywhere" and "For No One" alongside Lennon's direct-hit sneering ("Dr. Robert") and dreamscapes ("I'm Only Sleeping," "Tomorrow Never Knows") and Harrison's peaking wit ("Taxman") was as conceptually brilliant as anything Sgt. Pepper attempted, and more subtly fulfilling. A must. --Rickey Wright

Revolver is the best album of all-time.......2007-07-16

and it's by the best band of all time (and I do know all the songs off of Sgt. Pepper).

Revolver comes at the midway point of The Beatles, and it is a peak for them. Every song on this album is good at the least (except maybe Yellow Submarine), and there are plenty of great songs, not only perfectly written, but perfectly executed by John, Paul and (sometimes) George's vocals, George's lead guitar (especially in "And Your Bird Can Sing"), Paul's bass, and, of course, Ringo''s drumming. The Great songs are, IMO "Got to Get You Into My Life," "I'm Only Sleeping," "Eleanor Rigby," "I Want To Tell You," "For No One" and "And Your Bird Can Sing." Through all these songs you can see the maturing song writing abilities of Paul, John, and George that you can see starting to surface in "Rubber Soul," going past the boy-girl relationships of the early Beatles, or at least making their boy-girl songs much more complex, instead of "I'm in love, It's a great day" (which you do see part of in "Good Day Sunshine," but John and Paul still found a way to make it a complex song).

I could go on and on about the greatness of this album and the bad that made it, but i'll just get to the bottom line: Buy it.

It's the freakin' Beatles.......2007-07-16

And Revolver is a freakin' great album. Revolver is probally the best balance between normal pop and serious themes (some that will get you thinking more than The early Beatles lyrics). That's probally what stands out from the rest, the instruments include piano and horns, and they work out well. Piano's were coming into more of a focus into The Beatles' music, and those instruments came into focus more, while avoiding the expiremental tracks of the later Beatles. It's a wonderful blend of pop with the piano and other instruments that The BEatles never used, yet still staying firmly to the ground and not going into the sky of Diamonds, on a magical mystery tour.

It sounds more different because of that. Yes, people have reviewed it better, but The Beatles never stopped suprising people with all different kinds of music and styles, and kept on evolving. I think that Evolver should have been the name, so 311 shouldn't have stolen (I like The Beatles better than 311, although they can't get me that energized as 311).

Like all other Beatles albums, they are kind of short, and I have to take off .5 because of I want To Tell You, which I didn't care for as much, but every other song sounded like The Beatles knocked themselves out making it perfect. Essential.

The epitome of perfection.......2007-07-04

This has been my favorite Beatles' album for years and years and years, as well as one of my top favorite albums overall. While of course some of the techniques used on certain of the songs aren't going to seem as revolutionary or current as they were back in 1966, that doesn't change the fact that at the time, they were very radical innovations, helped to change the face of pop music, and really marked the beginning of The Beatles' mature period. By this point they'd finally fully graduated from doing just love songs and simplistic pop to dealing with weightier subjects, and using a greater amount of studio experimentation, such as the backwards guitar in "I'm Only Sleeping" and the tape loops sounding like exotic birds in "Tomorrow Never Knows." Overall, I'd have to say that it's quite possibly their best album, maybe even the one that's stood the test of time the best (even allowing for how some aspects of the music may seem dated to some people today, it doesn't come across like some horribly dated period piece either). Every song is just so great; it really just seems like the epitome of perfection, the type of album one could listen to several times in a row or every day and not get bored of or skip any tracks on (though I must admit I don't really care for "For No One"). As great as they were, how many other albums did they make that one could say were truly as perfect as this one? One can also easily understand why this has been called their acid album.

Another great thing about this album is how balanced it is. While on some albums, one Beatle predominates (such as how John sings lead on 9 of the 13 tracks on AHDN and half of the songs on RS), here it's much more distributed. John and Paul each sing 5 songs, with the requisite Ringo song ("Yellow Submarine," one of his most famous), and the remaining three songs, including the opening one, going to George. Apart from the White Album where he had 4 songs, such a relatively generous amount of songs would never happen again. One can tell from these three songs that he was really growing and maturing as a songwriter even this early into having become the band's third songwriter. The musical styles themselves are also rather balanced; there are soft songs like "Here, There, and Everywhere," fun meaningless pop like "And Your Bird Can Sing," social commentary songs like "Eleanor Rigby," the Indian-influenced "Love You To" (one of my favorite tracks), partially autobiographical songs like "She Said She Said," and songs with a strong psychedelic influence, like the hypnotic "I'm Only Sleeping" (probably my favorite track) and the closing track "Tomorrow Never Knows." I won't even get into people who are genuinely wondering why this isn't the Capitol repackaging they remember from childhood; I can't imagine this album without such key tracks as "Dr. Robert" and "I'm Only Sleeping," and am baffled as to why anyone would find the repackagings to be superior to the authentic British originals other than sentimental reasons.

Overall, this album is the perfect midway point between their early, more innocent period and their later, more serious period, a transitional bridge between the two eras. I also couldn't think of many more of their albums that would be this much of an ideal introduction to a new fan.

Review of Revolver UK.......2007-07-03

I bought it mainly for one song, but should have purchased if off of Itunes. Its a good album, nice happy songs, takes you back in time.

Volume 2.......2007-07-02

Revolver was released after Rubber Soul. This album continues the evolution of writting and composing of the fab four. It sounds very similar to Rubber Soul and is another great album.

Overall it's a lot more "60s" in the sound. A lot more of Georges Indian influence in the music. A lot more randomness in the writting of Lennon/McCartney. A lot more great drumming by Ringo (He's great on Tomorrow Never Knows).

Taxman is a classic song by George. It's sounds very similar to Drive My Car and just has a nice groove to it.

Paul says he made up a lot of "characters" in his songs like Eleanor Rigby. The String section was first used in Yestarday and is a perfect opening to Eleanor.

Other notable tracks are Goodday Sunshine, She Said She Said, and Tomorrow Never Knows. This is a great track written by John. He didn't want to come off the wrong way in his presentation so he used a saying Ringo came up with in "Tomorrow Never Knows." This was a huge step in moving forward in the music. It showed the audience a sneek peak as to what future music would sound like and I think it's a perfect song to end with to transition into the Genius of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Scott Weiland. Slash. Duff McKagen. Matt Sorum. It doesn't seem like a good idea to put these people in a room together, let alone a band. But it was the same exact explosive element of danger and low I.Q. scores that made both of these players' former groups--Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N' Roses--sell billions, so why stand in their way? The music on Contraband sounds appropriately monumental, all window-quivering riffs, and ticker-tape parade choruses. "Do It For the Kids" and "Set Me Free" take direct inspiration from Nirvana, meaning they are brilliantly raw, raucous, and indecent. It's great stuff. The power-ballads like "Fall to Pieces" and "You Got No Right," however, are more heartburn than heartbreak when compared to past achievements like, oh, let's say "Sweet Child O' Mine." --Aidin Vaziri

Super Group Super Great.......2007-07-05

It was predicted that this band would save rock n' roll, and for me that's what they did. The combination of ex-Gunners with former STP frontman Scott Weiland is fantastic to say the least. If you like Rock n' Roll pick this album up immediatly.

Great first effort from the supergroup, now polished this year with a new album.......2007-07-05

I come back to review this album in the wake of VR second album release "liberated". Contraband is the orginal first effort of this group, made up of ex-Guns and roses members Duff, Slash and Matt Sorum (second drummer for guns After Steve), Stone temple pilots frontman Scott Weiland, and Dave Kushner, former guitarist for Wasted youth. Originally known as "the Project" and filmed for a VH1 documentary while rehersing and serching for a frontman, Weiland fell into their laps and they hit it off right away. Set me free was their fisrt song and released on the Hulk soundtrack. Next release was SLither. These first two has the old STP sound to them, with a kick of GNR guitar from slash. Final big release off the album was Fall to pieces, A great ballad and very GNR sounding. Overall, a great mix of sound on the album from both groups. I agree that the mixing was a bit rough, but still good. With their second album out now, the band has really come into their own sound, and comparing it to this album, Contraband was definitly a start, and seems a mix of their root groups sounds, but awesome anyway. Hopefully these guys will keep going and not fall apart like audioslave recently did, another supergoup of this decade. Check this album out. Unfortunately, this edition was a copy protected album, so making taking it to I pod, mp3 is not really possible. Oh well, still worth it.

4- Content 1- Disc.......2007-07-03

Bought this years ago.. When i switched to strictly using my PC for music, i went to rip and cant... Read other reviewers about their issues as well. I dont own an I-Pod but cant use the disc for that either... So i guess i wont be hearing this again until i hook my stereo back up.. Absolutely insane and RCA should be ashamed... I am sure there will be many used editions because of this.
Musically its great. I do like the cd itself. Solid Rock record.

Almost Every Song Is A Hit !!!.......2007-06-28

I love Guns N Roses and when I heard that Slash and Duff were going to make a superband I was hyped about it. It took me a few weeks to pick this up after it came out but when I did I fell in love with it :) Some of the best songs on it are Slither (the single), Big Machine, Headspace, Superhuman, and basically all of the others except for 1.

I'm really looking forward to the sequel to this and it's coming out in less than 7 days - so it's already a must buy for me :)

Still Amazing.......2007-05-20

I first heard about velvet revolver because I love guns n roses (slash in particular). I figured it would be cool to see what former band members were up to now. What I found surprised me - the sound was completely different then that of gnr, but it was amazing in a different way. More metal, less ballads. It all depends on what you're into. While Slash's guitar solos where arguably better in gnr songs, many songs on this album rock harder with loud powerful riffs. Plus scott weiland has the perfect voice for this type of music.

There are four good reasons to pick up the Fantastic Four soundtrack. The first three are kinda buried in the middle of the CD--and they all happen to be new songs. First, there's "I'll Take You Down," a nifty rocker by a combo called T.F.F. Never heard of them? They're an ad hoc supergroup featuring the Distillers' banshee Brody Dalle, Yeah Yeah Yeahs' guitarist Nick Zinner, the Datsuns' singer-bassist Dolf de Datsun, and Jet's drummer Chris Cester. Second, Joss Stone's "Whatever Happened to the Heroes" is a lot better than its obvious title suggests; it's a rollicking, old-school rock-soul track namedropping Joe DiMaggio (a hero in Stone's native Devon?) and Marilyn Monroe. Finally, there's "Everything Burns," which sees former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody collaborating with Anastacia on his first solo outing. It looks like an odd-couple combination but somehow it works--probably because Moody knows how to write bombastic power ballads. (It's certainly less icky than "Hero" from Spiderman.) The fourth good reason is the very last track: "Kirikirimai" is a hyperactive rock/hip-hop hybrid that introduces Japanese band Orange Range to the American market. The rest of the CD, which mixes new tunes and recycled ones, is surprisingly solid with muscular but melodic contributions from Velvet Revolver, Sum 41, Simple Plan, and Lloyd Banks's infectious "On Fire." This is one of those thrown together soundtracks.All the cookie cutter,whoever is on the "popular music chart" crap music.There was only one cool song in the entire film and it's not even on the soundtrack.I hope the band sues.Don't waste your money on this garbage.There is nothing remotely interesting about anything on this soundtrack,but if you are a gullable sheep who doesn't mind being led to the slaughter,by all means buy the C.D,we need stupid consumers like you out there,you help the economy.

As many have said before more this is not the "greatest Superhero themed soundtrack" to indeed purchase and their words could not speak a louder truth. But as long as your Radio has PROGRAM installed within its system then your days should be a whole lot better when listening to this SOUNDTRACK for the 2005 "Fantastic Four" film. MARVEL and WIND-UP RECORDS have probably released some decent soundtracks for the MARVEL movies that didn't make that big-buck in the theaters that made up for it in DVD sales. The following being, DAREDEVIL, ELEKTRA, THE PUNISHER, and now this one. While the two before the latter do not stand up to the original SPIDER-MAN soundtrack (2002) which also had its fair share of hits and misses, The Punisher soundtrack should've been able to please any hard rock/metal fan with the presence of Drowning Pool's "Stand Up" and Seether's "Broken" featuring Amy Lee (shudders) of Evanescence (glare). Getting back on track, the FANTASTIC FOUR soundtrack indeed reflects the mixed feeling and light atmosphere your most likely to receive when watching the film itself. However, unlike the movie, this soundtrack (or wind-up for that matter) feels as though it doesn't try hard enough to select some actual music worth listening to all the way through. Instead they throw a lot tone-deaf artists that probably have the lesser of the PR and reviews from the masses and attempts to advertise them on the soundtracks for films. A good example would be the little piece of paper that comes fluttering out of the CD case of the soundtrack egging you to buy Megan McCauley's "new" CD, a shameless advertising trick to blunt.

Seriously, I picked up on this long ago and while I knew this was just the case with this soundtrack, there are some redeeming points with this soundtrack. There's a little bit of something for everyone on "FF," the case being that the music genres span from Hard Rock --- the main reason I purchased this CD--, POP/POP-ROCK, SOFT ROCK, and HIP-HOP of the edited kind. You won't find any explicit lyrics on the four tracks featured on the CD. I'm not fan of HIP-HOP in general, but the tracks here like Chingy's "Relax" (here I thought movie/tv theme songs were limited children's television and movies!) ---which isn't a bad theme song for the film, the rapping is bearable---, and Miri Ben-Ari's "New World Symphony," which is also easy listen to, but at the same time corny to the point where you don't want anyone know your even listening to it. Other HIP-HOP songs like Loyd Banks' "On Fire" - had potential to be catchy like "Relax," but fails miserably with droll lyrics, delivery of vocal performance and musical overall. Missy Eight's "Now You Know," reminded me why I don't like HIP-HOP to begin with.

The POP-ROCK and HARD ROCK is a mixed bag to frank. Some of its good, the good spanning from Velvet Revolver's "Come on, Come In" to Submerged's "In Due Time," in truth isn't as good compelling as "Hollow" on the Elektra soundtrack but just as good. Megan McCauley's two tracks, "Die for you" and "Reverie" don't show off her vocal talents like "Wonder" had (also on the Elektra soundtrack). Nonetheless, "Die for you" is indeed the better of the two. Breaking Point's "Good-bye to you" is a bit lame and isn't as good as their first slow songs from COMING OF AGE, "Live for today" or "Phoenix," it isn't horrible, but lacks the convincing lyrics of their earlier CD. The bad spanning from Taking back Sunday to the Japanese Rock band Orange Range, which sounds like something that would've been stuck on the APPLESEED soundtrack if it were the better band. Boom Boom Satellites is the better of the invading J-Rock bands anyhow.

Anastacia's "Everything Burns" still isn't my favorite song, it doesn't utilize her vocals that well, but after listening a couple times more it isn't horrible. It could do without Ben Moody's vocals though. Its no "Hero" killer, I can tell you that; Quite far from it. By far the best song on the FF soundtrack is probably Sum 41's "Noots" which a good time, high energy rock ballad worthy of the repeat button. I honestly hadn't liked a song from them since "Rock (is what we're all about)." But all in all Its pretty clear to anyone that not this soundtrack isn't bad. The problem it suffers from clearly is that WIND-UP Records doesn't choose wisely in terms of entertaining and talented tracks from various artists. They just wanted to make a quick buck off an over hyped movie.

I am not gonna say but the album, but again, it actually doesn't suck. If you compare it to the queen of the damned album, then it comes nowhere near it. It does have some pretty good voice talent in the way of ben moody, anastacia, lloyd banks, chingy, and others. You aren't doing yourself a favor by buying it, but it isn't worth skipping over. Look into it only if you liked the movie OR you like the artists. 'Nuff said.

If you have all the British version Parlophone cd's...as MOST Beatle fans do....then you have all these songs in the format they are here.

Now....for the COMPLETISTS in the crowd.....If you are seeking the american versions that were mixed for Capitol.....You can find them all on the 3 Anthology sets....and if you purchased the first 2 CAPITOL ALBUM boxes...you have american versions there...They are planning to release a Vol 3 this year.

It really burns me to see these bootleggers passing off this stuff to thirsty collectors....

Some Wax?.......2007-03-30

As an avid Amazon shopper, I am surprised my previous comments regarding this release were deleted. Since when is "Some Wax" a legitimate arm of EMI? I wish, truly, that EMI would release "Hey Jude" on CD, but that has yet to happen. "Hey Jude" is currently out of print as a vinyl release, and unfortunately, this release is not official. Believe me, I've got the original vinyl of "The Beatles Again" on Apple and the reprint on Capitol (purple label), and I've got my share of pops and clicks on each of them. I'd love this release to be put out on CD from EMI!

good album, but not worth the money.......2007-02-05

the beatles are a great band, and this is a great album. but these songs can be found by much cheaper means. tracks 1 and 2 are on the A Hard Days Night soundtrack, and the last eight tracks are on the Past Masters releases. so unless youre a huge beatles collecter, this album isnt for you.

The Ballad of John, Paul, George & Ringo.......2007-01-04

As cobbled-together albums go, THE BEATLES AGAIN (also known as "Hey Jude") is about as good as it gets. The 10 songs presented on it are from singles and B-sides, and cover the majority of the band's stellar career. Not one of these could be considered throwaway or filler.

John Lennon's lead vocals on all four of his songs are some of his most powerful ever. The track of "Revolution" presented is the one Lennon tried (but failed) to place on the White Album. Commonly labelled "the fast-version," the spine-tingling guitar work on it is unforgettable. All of Paul McCartney's tunes on this record were some of the biggest hits the Beatles ever had. George Harrison's lone contribution, "Old Brown Shoe," is high-energy and has an infectious hook.

If you don't already own this one, here is a "fab" opportunity to enjoy... THE BEATLES AGAIN!

Contraband Rocks.......2007-03-23

The best of G'N'R and STP have one of the best debuts in Rock and Roll in a long, long time. Scott Weiland is in fine form, and Slash is the master shredder of hard rock, pealing off killer solo after killer solo, without the the fickle Axl to bring the proceedings to a crawl. Anxiously awaiting chapter 2.

Only True Rock Band Out There.......2005-07-26

This album is simply amazing; it sounds as real rock would sound in the Twentieth Century, and not like the trashy grunts put out by the likes of rocker wannabe bands such as Blink 182, or the sickening wails of Good Charlotte (most appropriately known as Good Grief). The best of the best is here. Get it one way or the other.

Great twenty-first century rock 'n' roll........2005-07-14

A really great CD. Velvet Revolver is an amazing hard-working, hard-rocking band. Rock 'n' roll has been suffering since Nirvana. Velvet Revolver has brought it back. Some other new rock 'n' roll bands you should check out are Silvertide and Jet. Sucker Train Blues and Dirty Little Thing are very similar. That isn't bad though. The more the better! Do It For The Kids is pretty good but not as good as we will hear from the boys. Big Machine and Illegal I Song are better but still not as good as some others that we'll hear such as Spectacle, which is a great romping rock 'n' roll song. Fall To Pieces is a ballad but great as they go. The one-two-three punch of Headspace, Superhuman, and Set Me Free. The latter is my favorite song off the album. Followed by Headspace, then Superhuman so you could imagine how much it means to me that theey are all in a row. You Got No Right is the second best ballad out of the three. Fall To Pieces being the first. Slither is a great rocker and I never tire of it. I already mentioned Dirty Little Thing, and I ain't got all day. Loving the Alien is the third ballad and it's pretty good.

One of the best modern rock albums out there.......2005-06-01

Contraband (2004.) Velvet Revolver's first album.

In recent years, Stone Temple Pilots disbanded and Guns 'N' Roses has been left in ruins. Fortunately, several of the musicians who had made these bands so great weren't about to stop rocking. In late spring of 2004, Velvet Revolver released their first album, Contraband. This new band featured former Stone Temple Pilots vocalist Scott Weiland, and former Guns 'N' Roses members Slash and Duff McKagan. The two bands that these musicians came from were wildly different, and at this point in time, modern rock and roll was at an all-time low. Does Velvet Revolver's debut prevail? Read on for my review.

When I first heard about this band, I had some serious doubts. Guns 'N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots are two totally different bands, and I thought that combining members of the bands would be an instant recipe for failure. My doubts were only strengthed by the fact that rock and roll of the era in which this album was released was at an all-time low in terms of quality. My skepticism was shattered as soon as I sat down and actually listened to the album. THIS is the way early twenty-first century rock and roll should sound! Rather than combining the stylings of the bands that the members came from, this album sounds more like a continuation of early-era Stone Temple Pilots, and that's a very good thing. Admittingly, on a few tracks, Weiland's vocals take some serious getting used to, but once you adjust to them, you'll agree that they are excellent. And, as you probably would have suspected, Slash and Duff McKagan are no slouches when it comes to the instrumental duties in the band. Another great strength of this album is the song diversity. There are straight-up hard and heavy rockers, slower, grunge-based rockers, and even a few ballads. The ballads are surprisingly good tracks! From start to finish, Contraband doesn't have a dull moment. Whether it's the big radio hits like Slither, Fall To Pieces, or Dirty Little Thing, or one of the lesser-known cuts, it's all good. Why can't all early twenty-first century rock and roll sound this good?

When you buy this album, make sure that you are buying the uncensored explicit lyrics version and not the edited version (there IS an edited version out there, so beware.) Something else I noticed is that the album comes in a slipcase, and there are many different colored slipcases that the album comes in. Of course, this is strictly cosmetic, so whatever one you buy is a matter of personal preference. I strongly recommend buying the album at Best Buy above all other retailers, because the Best Buy version has an extra disc of bonus tracks. I won't get into the technical issues here; I think the other reviews/reviewers covered that pretty well.

Velvet Revolver's debut album is nothing short of excellent. There were a number of other rock bands from this era who all pretty much sucked, and Velvet Revolver's music blew theirs out of the water, hands down. If you're a fan of the Stone Temple Pilots, this is an album well worth adding to your collection.

It's Not DualDisc's Fault.......2005-05-15

Just a note to anyone who is afraid of buying a DualDisc because they won't be able to rip the songs... With Velvet Revolver's Contraband, it doesn't matter. I bought the album originally when it was released last year. The regular cd's have been encrypted as well. There are ways around it if you really feel the need to rip the songs from the disc, but it's not only the DualDisc format that prevents copying. Just a fair warning. I actually commend artists who are taking these steps to keep their material from being handed out for free online. As for the album, yeah, the DVD side is a bit disappointing, but that doesn't mean that it's not an amazing album. One of the best of 2004 by far. The enhanced sound on the DVD side is fantastic, but if you aren't into that, go with the regular cd version. (But it won't matter for rippers... the cd's actually have a warning label on the front telling the consumer that it cannot be copied... it's pretty easy to see.)
