      Amazon.com essential recording

The billing (Irakere "featuring Chucho Valdés") illustrates what a draw the leader-pianist Valdés has become in his own right, and Yemayá does indeed showcase his prodigious talents as a keyboardist, albeit on an electro-acoustic instrument and with a set designed as much for the American jazz audience as for his Cuban roots. The opening title cut with Valdés's sister Mayra Caridad on vocals is a killer Latin-soul-jazz workout, while track 2, with blistering solo work from Valdés over a crisp, percussion-led rhythm, sets the tone for the remaining seven extended cuts. This is not so much Cuban music as jazz with a Latin base--complex, disciplined, but swinging hard. The pace is often frenetic, with soloists diving straight in at the deep end, but with sophisticated arrangements there is always plenty of light, shade, and drama. Yemayá represents a new phase for Irakere and is Latin Jazz of the highest caliber, full of virtuosity and passion. --Derek Rath

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Spiritual Jazz" is what the world need now!.......2003-02-21

I love this CD, especially the title track YEMAYA.
I find myself playing it over and over. Chucho
Valdes and Irekere have outdone themselves with
this one. Jazz as a spiritual medium...WOW!
This one will certainly not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoy it more and more each time!.......2002-04-03

I bought this CD after attending the 2000 Havana Jazz Festival and hearing the group live. When I first listened to the CD, there was so much going on in the music that I was a little distracted. Then I took it on a short road trip and cranked it up in the car, listening to it over and over. The complexity, harmonies, percussion, and ensemble work of this group was a great pleasure to my sensibilities and my soul. This stands as one of my all-time-favorite albums!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! the magic of chucho's boys at their best!.......1999-10-30

No doubt! this is the most brilliant example of what a real all star team can do!, these musicians are in superb shape and this is the music that is delivering sparkling fire from La Isla de La Música. Just listen to the riffs of that brass section!!, not to say the power of the percussionists (well, of curse they are cuban),and at last but not least the master himself, the great boss Chucho Valdés playing the keyboards with the joy of a child playing in the park and the surgical accurate of the hypermusician he is!. Have no mistake, this is not a recording of memorabilia, this artists don't need your simpaty, they need all your hearing capacity and be shure:this capacity will never be the same after listening to them!!,

5 out of 5 stars Excellent jazz recording.......1999-10-26

I had the opportunity to see Irakere live a few weeks ago and immediately came to Amazon.com to find a CD. I chose this one and I'm glad I did. Even though some of the personnel are different this recording is still as wonderful as they were live. Their Latin Jazz groove is an outstanding blend of many influences.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Album.......1999-03-10

Often times one will read a review and it will state: "after repeated listenings the listener will be rewarded". Well ... not this album. From the first listen it is exciting, exhuberating music. I just finished listening to it the first time and I love it. If you want high energy, creative jazz with a latin flavor, this album is for you. This band displays excellent mastery of their instruments and the arrangements are tight and so very exciting...buy it!

            Album Description

A rare discovery of virtually unknown recordings. These are the unreleased sessions long awaited by every Latin jazz fan. These sessions were recorded in La Havana between 1976 and 1978, but between his excellent sound quality and the innovative music that Paquito created, we were amazed to discover that they sound like they were recorded yesterday! A great mix of Jazz and Latin groove. With Arturo Sandoval, Chucho Valdés, Carlos Emilio Moraes and Oscar Valdés.

The indisputable father of what is known today as Latin Jazz, Mario Bauza recorded "Afro-Cuban Jazz" in 1986, reuniting some of the greatest figures of this genre. Paquito D'Rivera (alto & soprano sax), Jorge Dalto (piano), Patato Valdes (congas), Jose A. Fajardo (flute), Ignacio Berroa (drums), Graciela Grillo (vocals) and Claudio Roditti (trumpet), were only some of the exceptional musicians that graced this masterpiece.

                Album Details

Bauza was a Highly Talented Section Player in the Havana Philharmonic Until He Moved to New York City in 1930. He Became Musical Director of the Chick Webb Orchestra and Helped Convinced Webb to Hire Ella Fitzgerald as his Lead Singer. He Went on to Play with Don Redman and Cab Calloway, Convincing the Hi De Ho Man to Hire Dizzy Gillespie in his Orchestra. In 1941, He Took Over as Musical Director of Brother-in-law Machito's Orchestra, Encouraging the Bandleader to Incorporate Solos Into his Arrangements. This Volume Encapsulates but a Portion of Bauza's Great Contribution of Cuban Jazz to the American Idiom, One of It's Great Unsung Heroes.

                    Product Description

Earthcds is pleased to present a live ceremony recorded in Havana, Cuba for two orishas; Ochún, the goddess of love and Yemayá, the goddess of the oceans and mother of all the orishas. This was an authentic Santería ceremony and was not simulated. The event on this CD would have occured even if it was not being recorded. We offer this in an edited 1 CD version or a 2 CD set of the complete ceremony. Our large catalog can be viewed on our website. Earthcds - Real music from real places!
