Pure, undiluted feeling.......2001-04-12

With a mature voice -and those incredible low notes of hers- Elena Burke gives in this CD what probably will be one her last offerings. Produced by someone who understands her and knows her needs, composer Marta Valdes, the recording is astonishing. It recalls Elena at her beginnings because of the format: Just Enriqueta Almanza at the piano creating the necessary support. The selection is exquisite, a whole gamut: From old classics like Un Viejo Amor -rediscovered in her voice- to a tour de force like Tu y mi musica, a song I'm totally convinced not every singer can pull out because of what it demands from the singer, passing by the highly dramatic Esta casa and Hay todavia una cancion, which sounds like a swan song. When one thinks how difficult it must be to catch and project the different moods of different songs in just 2 or 3 minutes, only then one realizes the greatness of this singer. Years ago, a Mexican critic said that Cuba could have had a good operatic contralto in Elena Burke, but would have lost its best popular singer.
