Album Description

Glow's first full-length CD, Rain Theory, improves on the best of their 2003 EP, Gabriel. From the hard-hitting "Single" to the plaintive-yet-danceable "The Wind That Shakes The Barley", Rain Theory's layered musical textures and melodic vocals move in a more upbeat direction while still maintaining their emotional intensity.

glad i got this cd its great love the music and singing one of the best ive heard in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing, deep........2007-01-05

Recently I purchased Glow's "Rain Theory" and "The Years." The only word that comes to mind in describing "Rain Theory" is astonishing. Glow's beautiful voice combines flawlessly with delightfully simple synthesized instrumentals to provide song after song of deep musical sensations. Many of the songs on "Rain Theory" feature lyrics focused on lost love. At first glance (or listen) someone might think the music here is to be gloomy or moody, but this is not so. The CD's dominant body of work seems to focus intently on themes of pain and healing such that the songs, to me, celebrate human resilience and passage beyond life challenges.

My own musical tastes vary considerably - from disco and classic 80's to contemporary rap and happy hardcore - and I am very happy to make room on my CD rack for Glow's fantastic musical mastery. I encourage everyone to give Glow a listen and be prepared to reawaken your emotions.

5 out of 5 stars ALL THINGS EXQUISITE! I AM A NEW GLOW FAN FOR LIFE!.......2006-01-16

I just recently purchased "Rain Theory", along with "The Years" (the incredible follow-up to this album) and "Gabriel" (the precursor EP of this), and can not possible recommend this enough to anyone willing to listen. Now this is what music should sound like - flawless musical craftsmanship and heartwrenching, soul shattering vocals. This album, much like Glow's sophomore release, "The Years", is a masterful blend of emotional electronica; dark, sexy trip-hop perfectly married with slightly sweetened synthpop. The result? Absolutely delicious and decadent.

I must say that I am fairly disappointed to see that I am only the fourth person to review this album. While I wouldn't expect Glow to be mainstream, given what passes for music in the mainstream, I am really surprised that more electronica fans aren't really all that familiar with Glow. That statement goes for myself as well, a self-confessed audioslave to pretty much anything and everything trip-hop, synthpop and downtempo, as I just very recently made the plunge into Glow. If only I had known earlier what an indispensible addition their albums would be to my collection.

Don't put this one off any longer! Make Glow a part of your constant rotation and you won't be disappointed. Also, don't forget to pick up a copy of "The Years".

I am a 34 year old Real Estate agent who used to own a Dance Club.... Think 10 years ago going to school... My personal leanings musically are more 80's dance and new wave... I got into the Gin Blossoms, Toad The Wet Sprocket, Origin stuff in the early 90's but when Nirvana changed the style of mainstream music I sort of dropped out... Went to dance music and there wasnt much of it... These past few years as I was busy with a family and real job I have not payed much attention but about a year ago I found Synthpop and www.adifferentdrum.com and www.slothradio.com aside from the synthopop and Blank and Jones type stuff I have been listening to I also have liked a lot of the teen-i-bopper music out latley... really top fourtyish as it has a dancable beat and the best writers seem to have gone that direction for the money.... K thats a long intro for why this album BLOWS me away... I have all this stuff playing in my office to keep me and my staff pumped all the time and whats wierd is we have this server (iTunes) where everyone can choose from 90 gigs woths of music and with iTunes you can keep track of number of plays. In the past 3 months with probably 100 new CDs in the server in that time this one is on top of all of them with the Killers coming in second. Its sort of dark, but energy filled, INCREDIBLE vocals and it really makes you want to dance. Please... check out the different mixes of

I mean it too. These past few albums that I have reveiwed really have brightened my music collection.

There wasn't much excitement going on in my music collection, so I actually did all these recommendation steps for amazon, and WOW. I am getting really good results, and I'm happy I have been taking these risks.

This CD rocks.

It's heavy enough for me, not so light, but it's got a slightly more goth rock/industrial sound to it. Like Ego Likeness or Faith and the Muse.

The first song "Single" is a perfect mix of these elements, and really starts the album off well. I think this group has a lot of potential and hope they continue putting out music.

The "Gabriel" song is really good. It's fast, and it has some good beats.

The remix, which is also on the CD, is positively stunning. I love it. Changes the feel of the song totally. makes it harder, and darker, and even adds some trance to it.

I'm very thankful for finding this genre, and I can only hope to explore it more and more.

Not only will be you be dancing (even if against your will), but you'll have the songs instantly stuck in your mind. Raindancer has all the elements to become an electronic pop classic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Sleepless" sums it up.......2005-03-16

This album starts with a high-BPM bang and never lets up until the final track. This is club-ready synthpop with catchy choruses that had me singing along after just a listen or two. If I were to compare it to any other band, I'd say it sounds similar to Beborn Beton. In fact, if I didn't know any better, I would bet money that "Sleepless" WAS a Beborn Beton song. Personal favorite tracks are "Regret," "Come With Me," "Sleepless," "Just a Warning," and the fun, retro "Everything and More." The weakest track by far is "Vampire." If you like your synthpop with good, strong vocals and a heavy dose of beats, this is your album.

Album Description

This is a really nice 6-song EP from a new synthpop act with female vocal leads. It's really promising with a lush sound and dramatic flare, combined sometimes with a retro synthpop sound (similar to maybe New Order in the mid 80's, but with female vocals). I hope to hear more from Glow in the future. --Todd, ADifferentDrum.com

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BIG future.......2003-11-26

I saw this band at Enigma last weekend, and I couldn't wait to get there EP. I have to say that it met my exspectations, and then some. Consider me a new Glow follower.

5 out of 5 stars Enigma of the 21st century.......2003-06-30

This six track EP is really emotional. Coming from a new synth act with female lead vocals called Glow they shows their true talent with "Gabriel". The music is a mix of classic 80ies new wave meets modern synthpop along the lines of Delerium. There is no telling when the LP by these guys will be released. So I highly recommend buying this EP before its gone for good. Five songs have female vocals. while the last track is done by one of the males in the group. Its the best song on the album when his chillin voice sings "Dying here" over and over on the track "Alone". This album has to be really good if me, A person who does'nt get into female vocals very much enjoys it. I would still rather have the guy singing most of the tracks though.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2003-05-29

I have seen this band 3 times locally and I can tell you, they are GREAT! They sound just as they do on the CD. The music is easy to get attached to.

5 out of 5 stars sooo original.......2003-03-07

this is the best music i have heard in a long time. glow has just the right amount of retro, underground flair, mixed with the appeal of pop. this is going to be the next big thing in music. just you wait and see.

5 out of 5 stars Great Chill-out CD.......2003-02-04

After the first play through this CD went straight to the car CD player to get me too and from work in traffic. The CD had a great flow from beginning to end - which unfortunately comes too soon, being only an EP!

I look forward to a future full length release.

This CD is well and truly worth spending your money on.

2 out of 5 stars Good songs, bad marketing, and not the best of Joe Nichols.......2005-08-07

Every artist has to start somewhere but it's too bad Joe had to start here. This Cd was obviously poorly marketed since I didn't even know it exsisted until a few days ago. After ordering my copy, I have listened to it many times and while there is potential here, it is nowhere near "Man with a Memory" or "Revelation". Joe seems to have vocal problems on some of the songs and seems to mimick other artists style such as Garth Brooks. While this is expected, it does take away from the quality of the album.

On the bright side, there are a lot of songs that any country fan can enjoy and they all seem to fit Joe perfectly. "Old Cheyenne", "Leave the Past Behind", "In Spite of Myself" and "To Tell you the Truth,I lied are superior songs that match the superiority of Joe's love songs on his newer albums. If the vocals were stronger, these songs would easily give this album five out of five.

Like any album, there are plenty of filler tracks here such as, "Independent Girl", and "Wal-Mart Parking Lot" Suprisingly, Six of One, Half Dozen of the other belongs in the filler category as well. I still can't see what Joe is talking about in this song. For an ubeat part of the album, he could've chosen a better song.

Though the album was poorly marketed, it does have some good love songs that country fans should enjoy. However, if a fan expects the Joe of today, then wait for his next release because you won't find it here.

5 out of 5 stars To Tell You the Truth, I lied...this album deserves 6 stars.......2002-09-03

I first heard Joe's single "The Impossible" and since it hadn't come out on CD yet I had to at least get my hands on his older work. Over all his debut and self titled ablum (which now has been renamed Six of One, Half Dozen of the Other) has a uniquely different sound then "Man with a Memory." Joe's voice was still in its developemental stage, but even then held its clear strong sound. Not quite as well rounded as his newer work, Six of One... does beat "Man with a Memory" in its solid acid country base. If your at all a fan of Nichol's, Six of One...is a good place to start in understanding his roots. Check it out, you won't be disappointed...then go check out "Man with a Memory." It just keeps getting better!

5 out of 5 stars ASTOUNDINGLY GOOD! ONE OF THIS YEAR'S VERY BEST!!!.......2001-05-03

What SONGS! WHAT a VOICE! The people that put this record together really did themselves proud. EXCELLENT production THROUGHOUT...I work in a record shop and have listened to this one MANY, MANY times during the course of my workday, and NEVER seem to tire of hearing any of the twelve magnificent cuts, which offer a delectable variety of country styles ranging from traditional--to blues-y--to rockin'--to Cajun--to, even Carribean-flavored!! Hard to describe!! I can only say I have rarely enjoyed an album in its entirety as much as I do this new offering from Eddy Raven!!

5 out of 5 stars THE RAVEN IS SOARING.......2001-02-17

You had better fasten your seatbelts for this one. It is Eddy's first CD of all new material since "Right for the Flight," and it is nothing short of a powerhouse. Eddy pulls out all the stops to display the full scope and range, as well as every color, of his celestial voice, and also every possible emotion, from the heartfelt father to son love song "Till I Can't Hold You Anymore" to the good-time, Mardi Gras feel of "Hearing It in French" and "New Orleans Is a Mighty Good Town." The diversity of the material is as impressive as the songs themselves, featuring everything from hard-core country ("Cowboys Don't Cry," "Coldest Fire"), country-rock ("Living in Black and White," "You Don't Have to Live With It'), blues ("Blue Cajun Moon"), Cajun and zydeco ("Hearing It in French," "New Orleans Is a Mighty Good Town"), calypso ("Bermuda Triangle"), and ballads ("Till I Can't Hold You Anymore," "A Little Bit More"). My personal favorites are "Blue Cajun Moon," "Hearing It in French," and "You Don't Have to Live With It," but all 12 cuts are outstanding, and you may find it as hard as I did to decide which are your favorites. This just may be Eddy's best album ever, and it will leave you breathless and wanting to listen to it again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Very engaging, if a little on the lightweight side.......2005-06-12

It's altogether good to have Onaje Allan Gumbs back in a jazz mode. And if Remember Their Innocence gives too much away to smooth jazz (I'm especially put off by Roger Byam's soprano sax playing; he does much better on tenor sax), it nevertheless showcases the leader in a pretty congenial mainstream jazz setting.

And make no mistake--Gumbs is a jazz pianist to be reckoned with; that he hasn't, perhaps, found his ideal mode takes nothing away from his altogether attractive concept, compositional acumen, and pianistic prowess. The trouble here--hence, the subtraction of one star--is that he too often flirts with smooth jazz sensibilities, especially with the throwaway vocals. It helps greatly that he has the entirely amazing Billy Kilson on board for several cuts in the drum chair; the numbers he plays on display a grit and character that, had he been present on all selections, might have enabled the project to achieve that coveted fifth star.

As it is, this is an entirely worthwhile session to acquire. And even if it isn't absolutely essential jazz, it still displays a very attractive pianistic conception and performance by the leader.

Bottom line, I'm a fan, hoping that Gumbs eventually finds the ultimate jazz setting for his estimable chops and compositions.

****1/2.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding one-CD compilation..........1999-12-02

... of the best uptempo songs mostly from Rhino's 4-CD box set, "The Doo Wop Box" (volume 1). If you think you like uptempo Doo Wop, but don't want to spend the money for one of Rhino's four-CD sets, this is the CD to get. For those concerned about duplication of material they already own, there are just two doo wop songs on 'Uptempo' which are not found on any CDs in Rhino's first three Doo Wop Box sets: The Volumes' "I Love You", with some remarkable, soaring falsetto work on the chorus, and The Flares' "Foot Stomping-- Pt. 1"... doo wop jive meets Army basic training, well, the marching part, anyway. The Stereos' "I Really Love You" and The Crests' "Step by Step" are on Volume 2 of the Doo Wop Box by Rhino, and the other 14 tracks on this CD are included in Volume 1 of the Doo Wop Box by Rhino. Highly recommended as a one-disc doo wop intro.

5 out of 5 stars A relaxing, beautiful collection of great oldies........1998-07-20

Out of all the vintage Rock and Roll collections that I own, I feel this certain CD is my favorite. The songs contained in this treasure make you remember the good old days. Most of the oldies on this CD are smooth, relaxing, and make you want to just take life a bit slower. The Elegants and The Mystics both provide wonderful adaptations of time honored children's lullabies, and Randy and The Rainbows present an instant sensation, Denise, guaranteed to become one of your favorites. And who can forget Dion's wonderful tune, which makes you think of the street corner singing groups in New York City. All the famous songs are included, from Step By Step all the way to the Del Vikings. Even the liner notes are chalked full of great photos and information, about all the groups and their music. A superb collection of great songs by great artists. Superb!
