GREATEST CD EVER.......2004-05-16
Continuity line.......2003-05-17

classic!.......2003-10-27
Their best album yet.......2002-02-03
Best album from a remarkable band.......2001-04-10
Even while still with BMG, the band cultivated an expansive garden of influences from powerful rock drumming, funk bass, jazzy piano and keyboards, and strong female vocals. King Crimson's Adrian Belew, who produced their "Simbolos" record described them as having a sound ". . . so distinct I can't categorize it . . ." Each of their successive studio albums has shown expanded playing and songwriting capabilities with "Mar Adentro En la Sangre (The Sea Inside the Blood)" being their masterwork so far.
Musicianship, songwriting, and sleeve artwork - all are done with obvious care. Being an independent seems to have allowed the band to finally deliver the complete artistic statement for which they had been aiming. Lyrics are excellent, moving slightly away from the "gothic" influences of earlier albums and into a more realistic world. Included are several wonderful adaptations of original poetry.
Fusing disparate influences such as Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, Traffic, Keith Jarrett, Frank Zappa and more makes the music seem "progressive," Santa Sabina's players reveal deeper awareness of space than most bands of that genre. Each musician gets some tasty parts, but the music is never overpowered by extended solos or self-indulgent playing. Rather, the whole album focuses on the ensemble and how each instrument fits into the whole. Each song is built on solid melodic foundations with interesting chord changes and obvious emotion, with the musicianship enhancing instead of covering up the music.
Highlights include:
- their wonderful version of Silvio Rodriguez's "Sueño Con Serpientes (Dream of Serpents)" featuring ex-Lounge Lizard Dougie Bowne's electronics, guitarist Alex Otaola's slithering backwards guitar, vocalist Rita Guererro's wordless solo, and a neat rearrangement of the 2nd chorus chords.
- the ultra-aggressive "La Daga (The Dagger)" with Guerrero alternately conjuring images of Robert Plant and Diamanda Galas, keyboardist Juan Sebastian Lach's jazzy piano solo (in the middle of a rock tune!), and bassist "Poncho" Figueroa's pulsing, Bill Laswell-like bass. Guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your kneck stand up.
- the elongated lines of the title track featuring Otaola's brilliant, but short, Robert Fripp-like solo.
- the intensity of the album operner "Soledad (Solitude)" featuring Julio Diaz's effortlessly light drumming and Figueroa's bass line providing a counterpoint for Guerrero's melody lines
- the prog-rock turnarounds and clarinet(!) parts in "Solo El Mar (Only the Sea)" also with some of the best keyboard and guitar sounds ever heard
- the quiet intensity and emotion of "Cancion (Song)" including Guerrero's gorgeous vocals, a beautiful string quartet, and restrained playing by all the musicians
"Mar Adentro En la Sangre" is an unqualified triumph for Santa Sabina and independent-spirited musicians everywhere. Enjoyable even for those who do not speak Spanish, the record doesn't quite extend its range into the avant garde, but it remains one of the most adventurous, exciting, and dangerous rock records heard in quite a few years. Open-minded musicians and music-lovers owe it to themselves to have a listen.
