The Bahia-born singer Gal Costa was a founder of the Tropicalista movement, and she's one of the reigning divas of Brazilian popular music. This CD started out as a cancelled live recording, so Costa and her band, which includes the incredible bassist Jorge Helder, went into the studio. The result is a magnificent tribute to the pre-bossa nova, samba songs of Brazil's finest composers, including Luiz Peixoto, Ary Barroso, Dorival Caymmi, and Dolores Duran. Augmented by strings, accordion, and the ukulele-like cavaquino, Costa's angelic voice floats over these silken sonorities and syncopations, from the festive baiao rhythms of "Kalu" and the soft jazz swing of "Fim de Caso," to the lilting longing of the Stan Getz-cover "Pra Machucar Meu Coracao" and the cuica-cadenced "Folhas Secas." Americans who think that there was no Brazilian music before the bossa nova will be pleasantly surprised by the variations on this disc. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Customer Reviews:
There's no one like Gal........2007-05-16
Just bought this one. Absolutely beautiful. My favorites on it are Nossos Momentos (the title cut) and Chora Tua Tristeza, followed closely by Pra Machucar Meu Coração, Alguém Como Tu, and Folhas Secas. I'll stop now, before I list the entire songlist. I like them all.
If you're not familiar with Gal, you should check out the sample audio links above. Besides just absolutely nailing the notes on whatever interval she attempts, I also like the way she contrasts ending some with vibrato, and others without, including the short little "breathy" exhale sometimes when ending notes on the "ah" syllable. She really knows how to bend those unique Portuguese vowels. Jobim was right: her voice really is "one hell of an instrument."
gal costa our moments.......2007-03-28
excellent selection of classics and newer Brasilian songs. she continues, after decades, to have a very good voice and has moments of vocal thrill in her delivery.
Beautiful........2007-03-25
Gal Costa is an award winning singer with an extensive career and success around the world.
This new album, "Our Moments" is a 2006 Latin Grammy Nomination.
She has spread the Tropicalia movement throughout the world and is credited for helping define the sound of Brazil.
On "Our Moments" Gal Costa shares with us some of her and her audiences' most nostalgic memories.
Gal Costa and producer Mariozinho Rocha chose songs from the period before bossa nova conquered the world, mostly sambas canções (samba songs).
The songs all come from a very special place in Gal's heart.
With these classics from some of the most important composers and lyricists, the audience is offered a well illustrated document of this fruitful period in Brazilian musical history.
It all comes together beautifully in this masterful piece of work.

All Hail The Queen, But What Happened To Her Other Songs?.......2004-03-28
Gal Costa's voice truly is a gift of God. She is definitely one of Brasil's greatest singers and has given the world so many great songs that are certain to sustain the test of time....But with that in mind, be aware that although this album is fairly decent, it does not include many of her greatest hits, like "Bahia de Todas". I was also a little disappointed by the fact that this album seemed overwhelmed with ballads, rather then being an equal balance including many of Gal's wonderful uptempo songs. It's truly a shame that this album was not as well balanced as it had the potential to be. But from my experience often times it's hard to find a true "greatest hits" album by any artist, that delivers ALL of their greatest work. The only way you might be able to get that lucky is if a greatest hits compiliation comes in a box set.
Gal's most perfect collection of 60's,70's and early 80's.......2002-07-16
This is the most comprehensive collection of Gal's songs even though it leaves out the mid to late 80's and the 90's.Having one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard,Gal delivers as
expected in gems such as FORCA ESTRANHA and FOLHETIM,my favorites.Sambas such as CANTA BRASIL and BALANCE show the fun side that makes Gal Costa such a unique singer.Ballads such as DOM DE ILUDIR and INDIA leave you wanting for more.Overall, a winner although missing some classics.
I fell in love with Gal ..........2001-11-08
... or at least with her voice, when I first bought this album in 1991. I already had a couple of her albums, and loved her music, but this is by far her best. And it's a wonderful compilation of folk, pop, and samba songs, a little of everything, extremely well blended and well aranged.
The previous reviewer quoted Tom Jobim as saying "Gal Costa's voice is the most perfect instrument on the planet." I hate to repeat, it sounds like I don't have words of my own, but that is the best way I've heard her voice described. I've felt that way for years! You have to listen to this album.
All the songs are great. My personal favorite is India, but it doesn't really show off her voice as well as some of the others - - I just happen to get lost in it. To really hear what she's capable of doing with her voice as an instrument, listen to the full track of Meu Nome é Gal (not just the clip on the site). And listen to all the clips, all the songs are worth listening to.
Gal: The Most Perfect Instrument.......1998-07-24
As Tom Jobim once said: "Gal Costa's voice is the most perfect instrument on the planet." He was not kidding.
This set of 20 amazing tracks is filled with fantastic performances from one of Brazil's leading female vocalists. (Since the death of Elis Regina, Gal Costa takes the crown.)
This CD is my favorite of all her work, and there is not a single bum track or filler song. Stand out tracks are: the alien searching "London, London", the incredibly rich "Luz Do Sol", the native "Acaí", "Meu Nome E Gal" and my favorite track "Baby."
The CD closes with Gal's inspired interpretations of 3 Brasilian "marchinhas" (little marches), a style of short samba tune meant to be easy to learn and repeat during "Carnaval." The last track is also samba-infected and a version of a famous Moraes Moreira hit.
A MUST for those interested in Brasilian pop and samba music. Gal is not as theatrical a! s Elis, not as melancholic as Bethania, but she is gifted with one of the most beautiful human voices around. Enjoy!

A "must-have" addition to your collection.......2007-03-25
Thoroughly professional, period. Brasil's Gershwin nicely done by a class act. Arrangements aren't always super, maybe lacking a tad of creativity, but, all-in-all, an absolute must to any collection! I'd give it 4.85 stars.
Good intro to brazilian music.......2006-10-28
Gal Costa has a crystal clear voice, period.
The arrangements are impeccable as well as the execution.
the repertoire is well known, but still, you cannot get tires of listening to it.

Needs a remaster and rerelease. This is a true gem of psychedelic tropical pop. You can find this album in a couple of different pressings. Just look for the order of songs noted above.
Worth the wait!.......2001-03-28
It's been a long long time comming, but I finally managed to get my hands on this masterpiece of brazilian avante / pop / psyche. Along with Caetano Veloso and Os Mutantes, Gal was one of the prime movers and shakers of the legendary tropicalia movement in Brazil in the late 60's early 70's. Needless to say this is quite possibly one of the best of all the tropicalia records. Super smooth sultry vocals, ehcoed all over the place, tweaked out bizarre orchestrations, great songs, and some of the most hauntingly beautiful signing ever recorded. Her first record is a lot weirder, kind of like streisand on acid, this ones a lil easier on the ears, with a more sophisticated sound and less searing fuzz tones. After this she put out a couple more very hot records and then fell off into the jazz / pop blackhole but on this gloriously realised record she created her masterpiece, and one of the coolest pop records of the late 60's.

Nothing elaborate ---.......2007-04-06
- just a nice album. One other guy said it well, a "Sunday Morning" type, perhaps - - - not a big deal, but nice.
Another nice addition is her "live from the Blue Note" -- also very unspectatular, yet, with some really neat chord changes (guitar) and what I'd call semi-delicious, okay?
Refreshing Gal does Ary.......2005-04-18
Gal Costa, one of Brazil's greatest female vocalists released this album in 1980 as a tribute to Brazilian songwriter Ary Barroso. The product was an interesting and refreshing collection of 1940-1950 classics that were born again in Costa's unusual voice.Check out E LUXO SO and the duet with Caetano Veloso,NO TABULEIRO DA BAIANA.The ballad TU and the danceable FACEIRA only boast Gal's ability to perform a wide array of genres.
Gal Costa sings Ary Barroso in her cool style.......2003-05-18
Ary Barroso was one the great traditional composers in Brazil. His only international reference is his song "Brazil" as recorded by Frank Sinatra besides Carmen Miranda's renditions of some of his songs.
So this is an Ary Barroso songbook album.
Features Caetano Veloso on "No Tabuleiro da Baiana" in a delicious duet with Ms. Costa.
Overall, you'll hear Gal Costa in her cool performances of Barroso's material. No brilliant arrangements to feature.
Lovely, sumptuous Sunday morning music.......2002-04-10
Gal Costa is blessed with a voice that at once soothes, energizes and pleases in a lyrically tuneful way. It's no wonder she is so popular. This recording is a collection of lovely and lush songs, a perfect accompaniment for a sunny Sunday or to brighten up a cloudy morning. Even on the faster, brassier numbers like the first cut, E Luxo So, Costa massages you with her breathy seductiveness. Perhaps not as brilliant as the great samba masters, this is nonetheless a prize of a recording that my wife and I have enjoyed many times, while sipping coffee and reading magazines, etc. It never fails to please, even after repeated listening. An excellent purchase.

Have you read a lot about the brightly colored, subversive '60s Brazilian pop called Tropicalia, but you're not sure where to begin diving into the music that's had a heavy impact on the likes of Beck and David Byrne? This 14-cut sampler will put some of the movement's key tracks in your hand, providing both an introduction and one giddy, gorgeous listen. Basically a pocket version of the five-CD Brazilian release Tropicalia: 30 Años, Essentials earns its title with recordings such as the studio version of Caetano Veloso's controversial collaboration with Os Mutantes, "E Prohibido Prohibir"; Gal Costa's wonderfully over-the-top cabaret performance "Divino Maravilhoso"; a Veloso-Costa duet on "Baby," the genre's anthem; and Gilberto Gil's wistful "Luzia Luluza." Finally, printed English lyric translations (often missing from imports) make this a disc that even many connoisseurs will want to own. --Rickey Wright

Muito Bom- Great stuff!.......2006-03-23
A good cross section of Tropicália. The liner notes are great, they are in Portuguese and English with the song lyrics in Portuguese with English translations. When I got this I listened to it for two weeks straight, everytime I got in the car.
You might become a Brazil nut..........2006-02-05
Beware of this CD.
After you buy it, you'll want more Tropicalia. You'll want more Brazilian things in your life in general. You may even be tempted to learn Portrugese, head down to Rio de Janiero, and live down there for at least the next several months, sunning yourself on the beaches, drinking tropical drinks, and all the while listening to wonderful, wonderful Tropicalia.
Personally, I don't normally like happy music. I tend to prefer melancholy late-night stuff--driving, intense, icy, moody music. (Or angry chick-punk.) But after watching "City of God" a few years ago, I became a bit of a Brazil nut. And while Brazilian culture's produced its share of intense, moody stuff ("City of God," the depressing and awesome documentary "Bus 174"), it has also produced this music, which is like a warm happy blast of tropical sunshine.
The people who made this music were basically Brazil's answer to the hippies. Against the repressive military regime that came to power in 1964 (a regime far more authoritarian than any that came to power in the U.S. or Western Europe), they marshalled an integrated movement of music, art, theater, and life.
On this CD, the tastiest fruits of their labors are collected together in a sumptuous cornucopia. The music is alternately happy and melancholy, driving and mellow--one moment dramatic and tense, the next flitting off freely like a bright tropical parrot. Instrumentation varies dramatically--horns, violins, electric guitars, everything but the kitchen sink. (Actually, there might even be a kitchen sink in here--one of the movement's leaders was clasically trained but reportedly used everyday objects like blenders and typewriters in his compositions.) So there's a bit of a Sgt.-Pepper's-Lonely-Hearts-Club-Band eclecticism to the compositions, but that's good, because they (primarily Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso)pull it off without pretension or showiness, blending it all together in a tasty tropical mix that will make you think of Carnival and beaches and happy people dancing in the streets while jugglers throw flaming batons in the air behind them.
So buy this CD. You won't understand the lyrics, but that's OK--it can be more fun not knowing. (Of course, if you're really really curious, they've helpfully provided Portrugese-English transcriptions of the lyrics in the excellent liner notes. But then, like I said, you might be tempted to learn Portrugese. And fly down to Rio. And never come back.)
Great anthology.......2003-03-17
Given its variety, selection, and the quality of the tracks, this is a wonderful anthology of the musical diversity and experimentation that TROPICALIA was about. It includes the banner song of the movement as well as some of the best pieces by most of its members. This is a great starting point for aficionados to the history of music, as well as for those who love Brazilian rythms.
Post-Bossa Bossa.......2002-09-05
Great stuff, and translations make it, as the editors say, something even those of us who have a lot of this material should buy. I consider Gilberto Gil easily the equal of John Lennon or Paul McCartney; I never listen to the Beatles any more but I can always hear the early Gil material, any time. One reviewer above referred to that "bossa nova stuff," which may reveal a certain ignorance of where the tropicalists came from in the first place. Gilberto Gil is the equal of Lennon; I would say that João Gilberto, the inventor of bossa nova, is the equal of Miles Davis. And I would go further and say that bossa nova, which began around 1958, is more important to the history of popular music than the Beatles. But, you know, North Americans tend to be rather closed-minded about the world. Buy this if you have the songs, or if you want great intro to the world of Brazilian pop music.
Dated, Historic, Strange, and Essential.......2000-10-18
The music on this record is old, almost as old as that Bossa Nova stuff most people associate with Brazil. You can tell when you listen that most of these recordings are from the late 1960's. But, as in pop music of the English speaking world, the late 1960's were a period of light-speed evolution, growth, eperimentation, whatever you want to call it in Brazilian music. The music and artists featured here transformed Brazilian music from a handful of folcloric sounds and rhythms to a truly cosmopolitan and progressive expression of the most radical artistic aspirations. Anyone who wants to deepen their appreciation for the music made in Brazil over the last 30 years would do well to learn this album, the songs on this album, and the artists who appear here, because after making this album they all moved on to very long and influential solo careers. In sum, Tropicalia produced some truly amazing works of art, and many of them are featured here on this disc.

After more than 30 albums, Afro-Peruvian singer Tania Libertad makes her U.S. debut with Costa Negra. Whereas fellow Afro-Peruvian Susana Baca remained in Peru researching Afro-Peruvian music and history, Libertad chose to move to Mexico several years ago. The change in surroundings gives her music a broader Latin flavor than Baca's, as she makes interesting connections between Peruvian, Mexican, Cuban, and Panamanian folk music, all tied through the musics' common African roots. Well supported by percussion (featuring an array of drums from Latin America and Africa) and great choral arrangements, Libertad's vibratoless mezzo-soprano voice is an impressive, commanding presence whenever she sings, rising to diva proportions on the album's romantic ballads. Libertad even holds her own in a duet with Cesaria Evora on the bolero "Historia De Un Amor," where the two voices intertwine with drum accompaniment for stunningly romantic results. An excellent introduction to this talented singer, Costa Negra should raise Libertad's profile in the States. --Tad Hendrickson

The best of Bahia doing Brazil.......2005-05-13
This album is the love child of the tour four of the Best Brazilian artists ever went in throughout 1976.Caetano Veloso,Maria Bethania,Gal Costa ,Gilberto Gil;their names speak for themselves. They got together, wrote together, sang together.
"Um Indio" is taken by Bethania to stratospheric levels,"Eu te amo" is caressed and given birth to by Gal's unique voice.Gil's craft lies in unconsciously finding common ground between reggae, rock and Bahia's own rhythms. To top it all off,Caetano's writing and sweet tenor voice wraps up this unusual yet unmatched product.Talent ....talent....talent
Very serious encounter of the first degree in Brazil.......2003-05-18
Two singers - Maria Bethânia and Gal Costa- and two composers/singers - Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso -- they were the main leaders and performers of the Brazilian cultural movement known as "Tropicália".
This album is a rare show when they decided to play together with music and lyrics by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
It's a live recording with limited quality but it's a doc of an era, full of politics coded message.
Maybe a disc for those who understand the Portuguese language and the political hints of those times.
Great live album.......2001-12-27
A live reunion of "the group from Bahia" -- Maria Bethania, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso -- the leading lights of the Brazilian tropicalia movement. This is an upbeat, though manic, performance, deeply influenced by contemporary jazz-funk fusion, but with a distinctive Brazilian flavor.. The vocals are charged with enthusiasm and joyfulness, but are still raggedy and at times a bit grating, particularly Costa and Bethania. Not surprisingly, the calmest, most compelling moments are Veloso and Gil's -- but everyone's so edgy you can't help but wonder if all four were on something that night. (Anything's possible, I suppose...) Underneath it, though, is a powerful musical vigor -- the band is tight, the funky arrangements are sharp and inventive, and in many ways this can be seen as the last blast from the peak years of Tropicalia's immense impact on Brazilian culture. Definitely worth checking out. (PS - I don't agree with the other reviewer's assessment that this has bad sound quality; sounds OK to me...)
Unpolished gem.......1999-05-07
Technically flawed with mediocre recording quality, the warmth of this double album, especially the vocal harmonies, make this a priceless set. Mostly obscure songs, the set has a loose and lively groove which culminates in a free-form batucada jam. (And if you like this sort of thing, don't miss the Gilberto Gil/Jorge Ben collaboration from a couple of years later: "Gil & Jorge") Probably won't make new converts to MPB, but unforgettable for any fan of Gal, Gil, Bethania, or Caetano.
Mature tropicalia at its best. Political and passionate!.......1999-01-26
Released in the 70's this is the album to listen to and enjoy the cultural, political and artistic atmosphere of Brazil under its dictatorial cloud. Faca amolada! A sharp knife cutting through the heart of the Brazilian People. Poetical, sensual and absolutely honest. The lyrics and rythms will stay in you mind and heart forever. The songs can be also romantic and full of passion only lovers in danger can feel... Have a listen!
