Album Description

With Hispanic immigration the hottest political topic in the nation, Carlos Mencia—the Latino version of Chris Rock—makes both sides of the border laugh with Take A Joke America. Street smart, irreverent, controversial and bilingual, Mencia first took on the issue six years ago when the album, his major-label debut, was originally released. What he had to say then is as fresh and in-your-face as today's headlines. So Take A Joke America again, this time in both Spanglish Parental Advisory version and a clean edit.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Habla or not to habla that is the question.......2006-12-08

Mencia's first cd was great. In one bit he makes fun of the audience when he pronounces a name in its English pronunciation. Mencia then tells his audience that if they want the Spanish pronouncement of the name to get his Espaniol version of the cd this one is English. Well This cd is the Espaniol version. If you have limited or no knowledge of Spanish avoid this cd. What bothers me is that there is no warning that this cd is mostly Spanish. The cd has a warning for explicit language but none for this cd being mostly a Spanish speaking cd. This seems to me to be a bit deceptive in the sale of the cd. Therefore, I warn all those who expect the usual Mencia comedy to skip this one if they don't habla.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Carlos cd.......2006-11-25

I got my CD in today and got it into the CD player as soon as I could. It's definitely a new album (dated 2006) but can't tell exactly when the show was performed. Inside, it's listed as being from The Comedy Club in Denver so this was probably one of his shows before really getting into Comedy Central.

As the prior poster said, yup it's pretty much all spanish with a some English thrown in. If you're hispanic, know spanish (I've known some that don't speak it) had older generation hispanic parents and love Carlos, you WILL understand everything on this CD. Hubby and I were laughing so hard. I heard a couple of jokes I've heard before but this WASN'T a duplicate of a Carlos CD I already had.

For the price I paid via Amazon sellers, it was definitely worth the price!

2 out of 5 stars If you don't habla espanol, just keep walking.......2006-11-03

I am a huge fan of Carlos, and have been for years. Ever since the release of 'Take a Joke, America', I have eagerly awaited the next album. So, imagine my joy when I saw this album.I was disappointed.
Usually, Carlos' comedy is peppered with bits of Spanish, mostly well-known words or stuff you can figure out. This album, I'd say about half of the album is in full Spanish. And it's mostly the punchlines to his jokes. He sets them up in English and then goes into Spanish, with no explanation.
There's nothing on the CD to denote that large portions of the contents are in Spanish, so there was no warning of this. Not even so much as an SAP button.
If you don't already have it, grab 'Take a Joke, America'. It's a great album from one of the funniest men of our time. But not this album.

4 out of 5 stars It deserved better.......2007-07-05

I've often wondered if I'm the only person alive who saw "Seesaw!" It's been sadly neglected. Michele Lee was wonderful, and it was a great introduction to a guy named Tommy Tune.. The music is very enjoyable. Highly recommended for Broadway show lovers!

5 out of 5 stars SEESAW (1973 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-01-27

I SAW THIS SHOW AND LOVED EVERY MOMENT. I TILL REMEMBER HOW MUCH FUN I HAD. I WAS IN COLLEGE AT THE TIME AND HAD THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE IT AGAIN. THE SCORE IS WONDERFUL, TUNEFUL AND MEMORABLE.

1 out of 5 stars A Broadway nadir........2004-09-14

With all due respect to Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, both of whom made major contributions to the Broadway canon, this must be one of the weakest musical scores ever committed to vinyl. Worst of all, it bears no relation to the poignant two-character play on which it is based. Just who was it who wanted that tender little play to be enhanced by a big campy production number starring Tommy Tune?

4 out of 5 stars Michele Lee sings Cy Coleman's most underrated score.......2004-01-28

SEESAW was a musical version of William Gibson's rueful comedy-drama TWO FOR THE SEESAW, which originally starred Anne Bancroft. For the musical version, the leading lady was the delightful Michele Lee (BRAVO GIOVANNI) who earned a Tony nomination for her performance.

The Cy Coleman-Dorothy Fields score includes great numbers like "Nobody Does It Like Me", "In Tune" and the 11 o'clock number "Poor Everybody Else".

The supporting cast includes the always-reliable Tommy Tune, as well as Ken Howard, Cecelia Norfleet and LaMonte DesFontaines.

Highly-recommended for fans of Broadway musicals as well as the incantory Miss Michele Lee. [DRG CDRG6108]

4 out of 5 stars This Seesaw is merely quirky fun.......1999-08-22

Cy Coleman's Seesaw overture is a wonderful start to a wonderfully breezy CD. Most of the chorus numbers are very poor ( Spanglish, Ride Out the Storm), but the spotlighted Michele Lee, Ken Howard, and Tommy Tune are preserved fantastically. Michele Lee's husky voice is capable of making your heart soar and break at the same time. Her comedic timing is wonderful (Welcome to Holiday Inn), her down-on-her-luck song is perfection(Nobody Does It Like Me), and Poor Everybody Else will have you rooting for Michele instantly. Ken Howard is truly a Lovable Lunatic. And Tommy Tune's Tony Award winning performance is captured here with "It's Not Where You Start." It is typically Coleman music, but he is wonderfully aided with Dorothy Fields's lyrics. If you can find it for a discount, don't resist!

5 out of 5 stars He's ill.......2004-10-12

I know Chingo Bling personally, he's not degrading Latins, he's reppin us. If you knew him, you'd understand. The things he says in his music are those that the dudes we hang also would say or use all the time. His music shows that Latins can be credible and funny. If he wasn't a real rapper he sure wouldn't be makin hits with Don Cisco, who takes music really serious. He makes some tyte music and if you're lookin for the perfect jams to throw in at a party to get people hyped... you've found it. Especially listen to "Swing on Deez Nutz" he comes sick with it in that song, but also makes you laugh. Guys can relate, and if nothing else, girls get turned on. If you're offended you don't know much about rap. It's a cool cd to listen to kickin it with friends and when you're tryin to dance, take it as a grain of salt the things he actually says.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but is it right?.......2004-05-19

I might be taking Chingo Bling too seriously, but he is on a come up, alot of hard working underground Latin rappers have been at it for long and haven't come up. Chingo came into the game not that long ago, and isn't a real rapper and is coming up fast, it kind of makes you think about the industry. Some say his lyrics are creative, but then again it's really easy to write funny lyrics if you're a spoof rapper like Chingo is. But is what he is doing right? If you really see it, he is exploiting Latin culture, basically making fun of it and he is a stereotype of what alot of people think Latinos are like. So for that I don't respect what he is doing, people will look at Chingo and clown the next Latin rapper trying to come up, this is how it begins when you degrade people like this. Yes it's all for fun, and yea Chingo is funny, but it's just getting too widespread for it to be respected by me, if anything he makes us look bad and only makes the stereotypes towards us even stronger. Why is someone going to want to listen to a recommended Chicano rapper after listening to Chingo Bling, they won't take it as serious. If none of this bothers you, cand you're in for a laugh, get this cd. But just remember what you're putting your money into. I don't know is he really deserves the fame or not, personally I don't know what type of person he is, but I think it just makes more room for people to make fun of us.

Writer/director James L. Brooks' warm-hearted comedy revolves around the culture clashes spawned when an L.A. family (headed by Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni) take in a Mexican maid (Paz Vega) and her daughter. As he's done for previous collaborations with Brooks on As Good As It Gets and I'll Do Anything, composer Hans Zimmer conjures up a smartly effervescent musical score that stands in stark contrast to the McAction film bombast that has too often made his reputation. His light-hearted, sometimes bittersweet orchestral score tips its cross-cultural concerns from the opening bars of the title track, which sets the delicate flourishes of a solo flamenco guitar against the starched rhythms of a chamber string ensemble. Guitarist and longtime Zimmer collaborator Heitor Pereira furthers that gambit with his self-written "John Comes Home," a delightful cue that cross-pollinates the waltz and tango with deceptive breeziness. Co-stars Cloris Leachman and Ian Hyland close the inviting soundtrack out with a spirited rendition of Gershwin's "They Can't Take Away From Me." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars 3 masterpieces again!Zimmer read this post! .......2005-01-18

I'm a great Zimmer fan.Since Days of thunder.
In 1997 zimmer composed 3 masterpieces.Peacemaker(please get expanded score)As good as it gets and Prince of egypt.
This past year zimmer do it again.3 masterpieces:
1.King arthur(the best crimson tide-esque score to date. With the best of prince of egypt, backdraft, gladiator and ronin from last samurai)
2-The last samurai(the best the thin red line-esque.Amazing score, but with horrible action parts(some additional arranger failed here eheheh)
3.Spanglish(be best nine months-esque.his clear inpirations the brig track from Road to el dorado and Nyah from spanglish.)
I'm a little bit dissapointed for the use of so many additionals arrangers.Specially in spanglish.Because I want apreciate note by note and Know is composed by Hans. But well...i guess is the price to be a genius like zimmer is.
I hope next year zimmer composed a great score with orchestra for madagascar and i hope the best for batman begins.
But i want make a Wish....."zimmer please leave so many aditional arrangers in your scores.Maybe in this way Golden globoe or oscar will go to your hands"
My favourite zimmer are:Prince of egypt, beyond rangoon,Peacemaker,Last samurai, broken arrow,as good as it gets and k2.
thanks for all your music and I hope some day You put a pic of Zoe and your miniZ's in one of your cd releases.I want to know how beautyfull Zoe is!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Hans, congrats on a job well done.......2005-01-17

Dear Hans,
Thanks so much for the gift that you've given to all of us as film score fans to kick off the year 2005. Spanglish is your most delicate score to date, and it's absolutely fabulous. It's music that really supports the movie rather than distracts from it, making the images and relationships on the screen stronger. I love the way you've fused a Spanish flavor into the romantic orchestra music without making it seem overly obvious or cliched. The score worked for me in much the same way the film did... It began nicely enough, and as it approached the end, it had subtly grabbed at my heart, and I knew all the themes. Then, in your "Bus Stop" finale, when the orchestra really soared in a gorgeous way with them, it was almost enough to make me cry. That may sound a bit wimpy, I know, but it was music I could really feel, it touched me. Thanks. I enjoy the more masculine electronically-enhanced action scores you've done, of course, but it's great to hear you dive into a gentle, light, touching, purely orchestral score. I really believe you've grown stronger and more mature as a composer in recent years. 2003's "Tears of the Sun" was a mixed experiment, but the production values were stunning, I adored the quirky Mathcstick Men, and "The Last Samurai" ranks as one of your career highlights in my mind. "King Arthur" and "Thunderbirds" were also a load of fun. I saw on IMDB you have five (?) films slated for this year. Here's hoping each one of those scores gets a release, I'm sure they'll be worth my money. Thanks again for Spanglish, and for all your great scores. I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Compiled by Juan Brujo, Brujeria's machete-wielding frontman, Spanglish 101 is a compilation featuring bilingual cross-border groups. It's also the first release on ex-Faith No More bass monster Billy Gould's Kool Arrow Records. The common aim here seems to be to provide a broad musical agenda, as the music moves smoothly from Peyote Asesino's riff-laden techno on "U R Gay" to the harem-scarem rap tactics of 7 Notas 7 Colores "Buah!" Chicle Atomico's girl-power punk exhorts the rise of "Generation Mex," while Brujeria contribute "Marcho de Odio" and the delirious disco haze of their top 10 Mexican hit, "Don Quijote Marijuana," which has to be heard to be believed. Way beyond the facile cross-marketing maneuvers of American jock rap, Spanglish 101 offers entré into an exciting wave of Chicano music. --Chris Campion

            5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!!.......2000-08-15

This CD is really awesome!!! Spanish metal bands are becoming more popular in the states now. That's helpful, now we can show that we latinos are more than just salsa and merengue!!! By the way, the song Don Quijote Marihuana is a remake by Brujeria of an old 80's spanish pop song titled Don Quijote y Sancho Panza. I find it really funny, it's a joke!!! Just like their remake of Macarena titled Marihuana!!! You should hear it, it's very funny!!!

            5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2000-02-24

English is the dominant language right now, but if it were for the artists in this album, everybody would have their own language.

Formed by latin bands that go from hardcore to hip-hop or heavy, it's a good way to start into the REAL latin music. Any of the bands in the cd are quite good, and it would be a good idea, if you like any of the music here, to buy their previous material. For example, Resorte's XL(Extralarge) cd.

3 out of 5 stars Juan Brujo could have done it better........1999-09-15

The real reason anyone would buy this cd is for the 2 new songs performed by Brujeria. So, I did it. And boy, what a difference. This is not Brujeria. The track #8, Marcha de Odio, is nice, but not Brujeria's fast and furious style. And track #11, Don Quijote Marihuana, is a joke. I won't even waste time talking about it. The other songs are nice. But if you want the best songs in this cd: Puya; Montate, and Calavera. Sorry, Juan Brujo, but if your new cd is going to be like the song Don Quijote Marihuana, don't even put it on sale.
