The septuagenarian Cuban singer Omara Portundo is the lone female crooner of the famed Buena Vista Social Club. But in the 1940s and '50s, she was the velvet voice of the jazz/bossa nova inspired genre known as filin. On her second solo CD, which translates as "Flower of Love," Portundo leads an assembly of Cuban and Brazilian musicians, featuring her Buena Vista bandmates, singer Ibrahim Ferrer and bassist Orlando Cachaito Lopez. The Congolese guitar whiz Papi Oviedo, plays the Cuban tres on "Amor de Mis Amores," "Habanera Ven," "Amorosa Guajira," and the title track. Portundo's poetic pipes sweeten these Latin ballads, from the afro anthemed "Tabu," to "Casa Color," a new song penned for her by Brazil's Carlinhos Brown. Sonically seasoned with strings, woodwinds, guitars, and background vocals, Portundo's "musical love letters" are postmarked with five decades of Afro-Cuban artistry. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Album Description

Flor de Amor (Flower of Love) is the second solo album for World Circuit by Cuba's leading female vocalist and Buena Vista Social Club star, Omara Portuondo. The best-selling solo artist of the Buena Vista collective next to Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara's debut in 2000 went to the top of the world music sales and airplay charts, and sparked two U.S. tours. This time out, her heartfelt vocals on a collection of musical love letters are backed by a combination of Cuban and Brazilian influences, giving the album a distinctive style. Recorded in Havana's Egrem Studios, the richly textured sound reveals the warmth and pathos familiar to fans of the singer, who traverses a varied set of Cuban songs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Warm, jazzy vocals.......2004-11-18

Warm, jazzy vocals by Omara Portuondo imbed FLOR DE AMOR with a powerful bossa nova and easy listening Latin beat.
These are lovely pieces brought to life by Omara Portoundo's voice: delicate in style, here tinged lightly with a horn interlude; there with soft supper club crooning.

5 out of 5 stars Every track a gem.......2004-10-05

I've been carrying this CD from my car to the house (and back again) for the last 3 weeks. The backup singers will seduce you. Most noticeable is the sound of the instrumentalists, and in particular the delicate nuances they afford and, in general, how INCREDIBLY GOOD it all sounds together. If one is to assume that artist's albums are supposed to improve, in general, over time, then this is in my opinion Mme Portuondo's best to date. This is the sort of album that makes you say (even so soon after its release)

4 out of 5 stars Definite Grammy Nominee.......2004-07-14

Omara Portuondo's voice would make any song sound good. What this CD lacks in guest stars, Omara makes up for it with some great classic Cuban songs and brazilian influenced arrangements. She even sings the last track partly in Portuguese. As with all these Cuban albums recorded in the EGREM studios, there is a unique sound the old studio environment leaves on the recorded works. This is a great album by the only woman of the Buena Vista Social Club, not too many members are left, enjoy this CD from one of the survivors.

Album Description

One of cuba's most cherished cultural icons, singer and pianist Bola de Nieve lived from 1911 to 1971. A revolutionary interpreter of mambo and folk classics of Cuba, Bola funneled these sounds into a sophisticated expression that distilled their deep soulfulness, transmitting this essence to audiences worldwide. Playing concerts throughout the Americas, the Soviet Union, and elsewhere, Bola was regarded by many as a peer of Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole. In recent years an award winning Spanish documentary was made of Bola's life ("Bola de Nieve" 2003) and the award winning 1998 Cuban film "La Vida Es Silbar" (Life is to Whistle) from famed director Fernando Pérez featured a soundtrack composed entirely of Bola's music. This classic session from Cuba's famed Sonotone label captures Bola at the height of his powers in late 1950's Havana.

5 out of 5 stars Nice rare Bola makes it to CD.......2006-05-07

Nice series this is - I have a few of the other volumes and they're all unformly good. This one features the great Bola de Nieve and his unique brand of Afro-Cuban sentiment. The remastering here beats the high priced import release - nice to see this out in the States. Bravo to the Musica Original De Cuba series. Well done - very nice to hear Bola and his piano in this setting.

Here's a musical institution with few rivals. For 80 years Septeto Habanero (they were originally a sextet) have been playing the son of Cuba, keeping it alive, helping it grow, keeping it fresh. They handed down the sound to generation after generation, through social and economic hard times--the dictator Machado considered son subversive--and good times; the current regime encourages cultural development and made the band "professional musicians" with a state income and support. The group developed the country music of Oriente, added brass in the late '20s, went to New York to record in the '30s, and became a cultural icon in the '80s as the cultural freeze between New York and Havana began to thaw. The sound has not changed radically from those old recordings made in New York, and this 1997 session shows the current band to be rock solid and true to the tradition laid down eight decades ago. Smooth, precise and full of soul, Septeto Habanero carries on. --Louis Gibson

5 out of 5 stars Much to Be Proud Of.......2002-10-17

        Brilliant, haunting, driving.

Latin music is as varied as its native countries.

If like me you first dipped your toes into this genre through merenque and cumbia, son is a new rich experience. And this CD is pure son, not Buena Vista Social Club which was spoiled by some pushy gringo's twanging electric guitar.

The CD also seems to be better sound quality than the copies of La Epoca de Oro and El Son lo mas Sublime.

5 out of 5 stars Some New Members, Same Great Sound.......2000-06-01

"Pride of the Soneros", the title says it all. This CD is a must have to any serious collection of Cuban music. The musicians featured on this incarmnation of "SH" are fabulous, 8 musicians with a combined age of 500! That translates into alot of experience and these veteranos can really play. The CD is comprised of son, guaracha and boleros sometimes in very tasty combinations. The vocals on "Se Entero" are chilling as the singers voice quivers and enunciates con sabor. This is classic Cuban music that rivals such illuminaries as the "Buena Vista Social Club" for authenticity. This is reflected in the sheer volume of work and experience, this band has been around for 80 years! It was even recorded in Cuba. The technical style is flawless and rich with polyrhythmns, trumpet, tres, guiro, guitar and bass. Mix these instruments with vocals that are exquisite and you have "Septeto Habanero", a Cuban musical tresure. Do yourself a favor and add this CD to your Cuban collection, you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars One of 98's top Cuban releases..........1999-01-22

If it can be believed, Septeto Habanero has released a new record to top 1995's "75 Years Later." Although the great Manuel Fure's lead vocals are missed, any of the three great soneros who replace him on this CD are fine singers in their own right. (On track #8, "Que se Acabe el Leperepe," one of them even sometimes resembles the great Carlos Embales.) Also, I prefer the new trumpet player, his tone and style fit better with the traditional format of the group. The production (by Cesaria Evoria's producer Jose da Silva) is just excellent, perfectly capturing the energetic, acoustic flavor of the music. Most importantly, though, the group has packed the CD with great arrangements of great songs, and mostly newer originals. Track #3, "Que Encierran Tus Ojos," a bolero son by the group's leader, guitarist German Pedro Ibanez, is an instant classic...If you're already initiated into the sounds of traditional "Son," or if you have worn out "Buena Vista Social Club" &/or "Cubanismo," this is a must.

In the wake of the multiplatinum-selling Buena Vista Social Club, Cuban music has become hot. This album might borrow the BVSC concept of gathering musicians of different generations together, but--while the names aren't as widely known (with the exception of Buena Vista alumnus Juan de Marcos Gonzalez)--the music glistens just as brightly, covering a similar territory of son and bolero and offering an extraordinary pianist in Guillermo "Rubalcaba" Gonzales. His two contributions, "Oguere" and "Rubalcaba," show him to be as talented as Rubén González. Still, there are no slouches here; all four singers are superb. Young Luis Frank shines on "Longina," a duet with Juan de Marcos, sparingly accompanied by tres. The title track, Frank's homage to the Havana barrio, is a tour de force, picking up the torch of Cuban traditionalists Sierra Maestra and running with it. Even in the time of a Cuban glut, A Buena Vista is essential. --Chris Nickson
