Customer Reviews:
good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27
We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.
memories.......2007-02-22
This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended
TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13
This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.
TV themes.......2006-07-05
Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.
Deja Vu.......2006-02-17
Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Follow up record.......2007-06-01
Not to say this guy isn't good, he is and very smooth too. If you have "People Gonna Talk" though, this new offering is like the cuts that missed the first recording.
Believe What I Say.......2007-04-11
I had never seen James Hunter until I saw him on Leno. I kept hearing a soul thread floating through this song. At times I thought I could hear a mild James Brown influence. (J.B. Fan)
I don't usually hear one song and go to Amazon to buy, but I did and was very satisfied. I bought 2 CD's. Quite pleased on both, Believe What I Say & People Gonna Talk.

A Tremendous Find.......2007-01-14
I was turned on to James Hunter by a friend. What a great find he turned out to be for me. Having started my true music appreciation with the motown sound and soul music of the '60's and '70's, James is a great modern day find. The sax in his music is quite appealing. I highly recommend anyone curious about James's music go to his web site and sample his sound. Gauranteed to please.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
World's best trumpet player.......2007-05-12
The incredible Wynton Marsalis plays the classics of the brass solo genre.
If you want to hear some very delightful music played by a most impressive instrumentalist, get this album.
Listening to this will make you realize the mediocrity of most of today's popular music. They don't grow people like Jean-Baptiste Arban any more.
Credit Wynton Marsalis.......2007-01-25
This outstanding collection of turn-of-the-last-century cornet solos is a collector's item. Mr. Marsalis (and the ensemble) makes it all sound so easy and enjoyable. As an instrumental music teacher I find hearing these inspires many of my high school high brass players to work on them.
stylistically wrong.......2005-05-29
Having studied with an international authority on cornet playing I can con fidently say that Wynton's cornet playing is ok at best. More than anything hes tryying to sell CDs rather than capture the essence of Cornet playing, like most of wyntons playing its alot of flash but no substance. Great if your a trumpet head and you get off on empty virtuostic fluff.
Wynton, Wynton, Wynton........2005-01-01
There are times, when I'm listeing to Wynton, I get depressed like the flash of a 64th note played. His sounds is so pure and wonderful. He rocks. I don't mind realizing that there aren't many other trumpeteers out there like him.
I met him once actually. In Alice Tully Hall, after a holiday concert. He stood on the stage towering over my dad, brother and I. He called us "the frontline", after my dad telling him we play the trumpet, trombone, and clarinet. What a cool guy.
Good, but not the best.......2004-11-28
Marsalis is an excellent trumpet player, there is no question as to that. He is certainly not the best in the world, however. I prefer a better recording of Carnival of Venice and many other cornet solos by Gerard Schwarz. The spirit of such solos is lost when they are put to ensemble accompaniment, Schwarz interprets them far better in my opinion. Also, his technical mastery is at least equal to that of Wynton's, or was when he made the album. His sound is sweeter and more perfect to my ear. And this is not the only album in which you can hear dazzling technical pieces, either. Sergei Nakariakov, Rafael Mendez, and Allen Vizzutti are the most proficient players with recordings out there. Nakariakov and Mendez both do better readings of the Paganini, playing the entire song double-tonguing and circular breathing. The Mendez Flight of the Bumblebee has a much better sound and fits the piece more, too. The most amazing song I have ever heard is the Carnival of Venus, by Vizzutti. Listen to anything by Wynton and then this song, you will be absolutely amazed. The last variation of the Marsalis is Vizzutti's first, and they get harder from there. Simply put, this is a good recording and the most accessible, but there are better ones out there. I wouldn't buy this to hear cornet solos or amazing technical pieces, but for hearing other interpretations. I prefer Schwarz, Mendez, Vizzutti, and Nakariakov.

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")
Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

An American Treasure.......2007-03-03
When PBS showed the 1989 Paper Mill Playhouse production of Showboat, my five year old daughter fell in love with musical theater. To this day we never miss a production of Showboat, West Side Story, Music Man, Oklahoma or the rest of the great American musicals. These 3 discs are the closest you can ever hear to the original in 1927 and the recordings are leaps and bounds above any movie version or revival cast. Listening to Bill or Make Believe you almost want to cry at what Kern and Hammerstein were able to create.
I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.
If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.
The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.
If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.
DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16
One of the great recordings of musical theatre ever. Although it's no longer available on EMI Angel, it was reissued in October, 2006, as an EMI Classic's "Great Recordings of the Century." It's been "Digitially Remastered at Abbey Road Studios from the Original Masters" and "noise-shaped via the Prism SNS system for optimum sound quality." If ART remastering does for this recording what it has done for other EMI Classics in my library, then it should sound superb. However, I understand the booklet is not as detailed as the one in the original 3-disc release.
Thank you, EMI.
I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)
An American tragedy...........2006-02-06
This is the first of the great American musical plays, and probably remained unchallenged until the mid-1950s when West Side Story appeared. The term "musical comedy" does not apply. The few laugh lines are subsumed by the terrible sense of loss and disaster that work throughout the story. At its core is homelessness, the destruction wrought by racism, bad choices, human weakness, and reconciliation. The cast?--this was one of the few crossover recordings I've ever heard that actually worked. The trio of Jerry Hadley, Frederica von Stade, and Teresa Stratas is a marvel; Stratas in particular seems to have had a patented Dark Cloud that shadowed her. It's perfect for Julie Dozier Laverne. And the late Bruce Hubbard brings a magnificent dignity and voice to Joe--his singing of "Ol' Man River" amy not efface Paul Robeson, but can stand beside it.
Gorgeous!.......2005-08-26
Simply gorgeous! The most unforgetable music and the best voices! An album for all time!

Vince Gill has always been ambitious man: he got his start with the progressive new grass outfit Bluegrass Alliance but didn't stay long, and he soon became guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for the country-folk middle-roaders Pure Prarie League. He stayed with the band for three years before working as a sideman to Rodney Crowell and eventually signing with MCA in 1984. His career skyrocketed, fueled by tasteful country material and his creamy vocals. 1992's I Still Believe in You was his biggest success, and the title cut a monster hit. It's not a spectacular record, but Gill's vocal strengths and guitar work are hard to deny, and these 10 songs, featuring guest spots by Delbert McClinton and Alison Krauss, represent his style very well. --Roy Francis Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Vince Sings Like No One Else.......2005-11-22
No one living today invites us into their soul like Vince Gill does when he sings a ballad. This man has no equal.
Except for the late, great Roy Orbison, Gill stands alone when singing of love's heartache or love's joy. He transmits more than words and a story when he sings. He gives us a glimpse into his heart.
In this album, Gill allows us to be his companion, confiding in us his anguish, his joy and his pain in such instant and forever classic love songs as "I Still Believe In You," Tryin' To Get Over You," "Love Never Broke Anyone's Heart," and "No Future In The Past."
Take you pick. Play them. Then play them again and again. If you aren't already, you'll be addicted to this man's voice and soul when you listen to this album.
country music excellence.......2005-01-09
Rooted in traditional country music, Vince Gill is one of country music's greatest talents, and shines as a songwriter, singer and guitarist on all ten tracks of this CD, which is a terrific mix of tuneful ballads, up-tempo numbers, and a big dash of humor with "One More Last Chance". Perhaps my favorite track is "No Future in the Past", which I doggedly tried to learn on the piano, and was surprised by the complexity of the composition, with its many changes while maintaining its lovely melodic line.
At 5 x platinum, "I Still Believe in You" has been Vince's biggest selling CD, and the title song was a big hit; it won many awards, among them the CMA Song of the Year and Album of the Year for '93, as well as giving Vince the Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year awards, and the '93 TNN Music City Awards gave Vince the Single of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year award as well.
Vince's band is superb, and are a part of what makes this such an excellent recording, the booklet insert has all the lyrics and I do like the pensive b&w cover photo, rather unusual for a non-classical CD, but maybe appropriate, because this album is a 100 % country classic, and on my list as an essential for any CD collection of that genre.
Total playing time is 36'23 thoroughly enjoyable minutes.
Vintage Vince.......2003-04-25
With his distinctive, pure tenor and skilled songwriting ability, Vince Gill can always be counted on to deliver a quality product. 1992's I Still Believe In You was another solid, if not startling, effort from the team of Gill and megaproducer Tony Brown.
Gill wrote or co-wrote all of the songs included here with eight different collaborators. He claims only the title song was autobiographical. It is a reassurance of devotion to his wife Janis, even though the obligations of fame often impede their time together (alas, Amy Grant came along and permanently impeded their time together a few years ago). Many of Gill's slow songs have a tendency to sound alike. He gets away with it by using diverse subject matter and by coming up with lyrics that touch a universal chord. "No Future In The Past" deals with lost love while "Nothing Like A Woman sweetly extols the pleasures of having a woman to love. "Under These Conditions" looks at potential lovers who bypass adultery because their families need them while "Love Never Broke Anyone's Heart" addresses the reluctance to fall in love again for fear of getting hurt.
In addition to using diverse subject matter, Gill sequences his tracks well enough that the listener is never placed into a coma. The interspersed uptempo tunes place as much emphasis on the beat as the lyrics. "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away" is one of Gill's most soulful recordings ever, while "Say Hello" sounds as if it could be a revived classic from the '60s Bakersfield era - very similar to the kind of material that Dwight Yoakam has popularized. "Pretty Words" is a footstomping bluegrasse number, while "One More Last Chance" is a carefree slice of rockabilly. These faster tunes nicely convey that amidst all the seriousness, Gill relishes the chance to cut loose.
Vince's breakthrough album.......2002-07-19
I Still Believe In You was Vince Gill's breakthrough album. He does a fine job here. The title song, "I Still Believe In You", was Song Of The Year, and deservedly so. It's one of the best romantic ballads I've heard. Vince also had a couple of other mellow hit songs off this record: "Tryin' To Get Over You", which has become a classic breakup song, and the somber waltz "No Future In The Past". The other ballads aren't that bad either. The romantic song "Nothing Like A Woman", the slow two-stepping song "Say Hello", the positive love song "Love Never Broke Anyone's Heart", and the song "Under These Conditions"(where the guy meets a married woman and decides that he can't have a relationship because he, too, is married) are all strong ballads from Vince. Vince rocks out here, too, and showcases his fine lead guitar. On the funky opening song, "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away", Vince collaborated on the songwriting with Pete Wasner, his buddy and keyboard player. Also, "One More Last Chance" and "Pretty Words" are both strong, high-energy tunes. Vince put out an award-winning album that is fun and listenable. I don't think anybody should miss this one.
You'll believe in this album for years to come!.......2001-10-20
Vince Gill was one of the great country singers of the late 80s all the way up to the end of the 90s, and he still is even though he hasn't released any new music in awhile. I Still Believe in You is one of Vince's best, if not his best album that he has ever made.
Of the ten tracks, five of them were HUGE hits for the country music world. These five blockbusters are: "I Still Believe in You," "One More Last Chance," "No Future in The Past," "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away," and my favorite, "Tryin' To Get Over You." Even to this day, I still hear all of those songs on the radio a lot, that's how great they are.
The five non-hits in I Still Believe in You aren't bad either. As a matter of fact, all of them are good songs, especially "Nothing Like A Woman."
I'm 21 and I like Vince Gill's music, my mom is middle-aged :) and she's a fan, and my grandfather is 87 and he says Vince Gill is his favorite country music singer. In other words, it doesn't matter how old you are, if you like great country music, get this album while you can! Even if you're not that big on country music, at least give it a listen, it might surprise you.

This one-disc reduction of John McGlinn's monumental three-CD version of Show Boat provides 75 minutes of highlights in a package dubbed the "Broadway Show Album." Customer Reviews:
Fabulous.......2002-10-03
Let me start off by saying that my first experiences with Show Boat came through the splendid 1951 MGM movie version. Having never seen Show Boat performed live on stage, this CD pretty much brings the live experience home (and note I said 'this' CD; the full 3-disc set would be just short of actually being front row center). The immortal Kern/Hammerstein score is one of my favorites (right up there with My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun, and Brigadoon) and is definately one of the greatest ever written for the musical theater.
Since Show Boat does not have an official original cast album, I suppose that this one suffices quite well. All original orchestrations are used here and the music is as it was on opening night in 1927. This is the most complete version available (whether you go with the full set or just this disc). The 1946 revival cast album is the oldest 'complete' album and is nice when paired with this disc to give one a sense of how Show Boat sounded in the early days.
I really didn't care much for this CD at first, but after listening to it a couple more times, I like it better and better each time. McGlinn certainly did right by this one! I'm not too familiar with most of the cast (save for Frederica Von Stade and Paige O'Hara), but they're all great. You'd think that this is a recording of a live performance, not just a studio album. Fantastic singing is had thoughout. McGlinn also did a great job with Brigadoon 3 years later, and did he not have a similar effort with Annie Get Your Gun as well?
I still think that the MGM movie version and its soundtrack album are the best but this rendition is definately not bad! Highly recommended. But if you can, pick up a copy of the movie soundtrack or of the 1946 revival album for comparison.
Dream Come True.......2002-08-22
First, "Showboat" is my all time favorite Musical, from the '40's and '50's when my mother took us to the movies every Sunday. I have video tapes of the 1951 MGM version with Howard Keel and Kathyrn Grayson, as well as the earlier movie version. A few years ago, I saw a TV special on the making of the three Disc complete remake of Showboat, true to the original score. I tried to get a cy of it but no local store could help me. Then through the magic of computers and AMAZON.com, I obtained the three disc set plus this single CD, which I treasure. This one is the best, without doubt. Now I have the complete version of songs and music I only vaguely remembered from the TV special. I wish someone would make a movie just like this version so I could have it on DVD. The whole cast and orchestra are awesome, especially Frederica von Stade. I have since bought other CDs of her work. Buy the three disc set if you can afford it, it has a thick booklet with the actual score and dialogue. But if you cannot, buy this CD. This is the ultimate, the prototype Broadway musical.
IT DESERVES 6 STARS.......2001-06-29
I can't thank enough all the people responsable for this terrific revival cast album. Here is a perfect example of how you should do a classic show and maintain the original intentions of the writer and the composer. If they were alive,JEROME KERN and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN would have been proud of the way their masterpiece have survived them.It is impossible to imagine a better version of the show;this is the definitive one. It's funny when you think of it,most people know the songs by heart, yet it seems that we rediscover the show with this version.Suddently ,we are in 1927 and mister ZIEGFELD is scared like hell that he will loose a lot of money with this;but that's strangely the situation in which the modern AMERICAN musical was born.
Show Boat.......2000-09-10
I really like this recording! The voices are really great. I especially liked "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man." I would recommend this CD to everyone who likes the show and musical theatre.

A Listening Treat .......2007-03-08
What a delight to listen to this collection of pure Rutter ! The melodic sounds of the Cambridge Singers bring me such pleasure The sheer joyfulness of this music is to me a religious experience of such depth It is superb and will lift ones spirits instantly. highly recommended to all lovers of the English contemporary choral sound and scene,____ not to be missed
Be Thoy My Vision CD.......2007-02-19
My husband sang many of these John Rutter compositions with his church choir, and this CD is perfect since the choir is directed by Rutter, singing his own music. If you love religious music, this will bring tears to your eyes, the choir is "that" perfect.
Really good, but don't listen to it all at once........2007-01-07
I really liked this CD. It really showcases Rutter's knack for religious choral music. Perhaps it helps that I have sung some of his stuff with various groups. However, as with any similar compiliation, the composer's sameness of style and motif becomes apparent. This repetition can become boring on the third or fourth listening. On the other hand, this makes a great reference tool for any choral director or performer. Buy it, however, it's worth it, but don't listen to it all at once.
A must for choral music fans.......2006-09-19
Simply fabulous, 10/10. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good! ;-) There are too many good pieces to start naming all of my favorites, but these are some of the best known ones: "Open Thou Mine Eyes", "A Gaelic Blessing", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen", "For the Beauty of the Earth", and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You".
An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22
I sought a recording of Rutter's beautiful hymn, "Wings of the Morning", after we sang this lovely tune in church and this was the only CD I could find that contained it.
This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.
Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.
While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.
The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.
If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

Split down the middle.......2007-05-15
Though not a bad album, it just really doesn't do alot for me. I Fricking love Diorama & Young Modern. (I know, ...it's not a silverchair album) I just don't know what they were going for on this album. Don't get me wrong, like I said their are some decent grooves on these tracks, and Track 4 is indescribably calming and just puts your mind in total ease. But all in all, the album is overproduced, to much tecno beats, and just not memorable. If you can pick it up dirt cheap, take a chance, if it's over 6-7 bucks pass until it becomes dirt cheap.

The Dissociatives Not-Quite-Perfect Transitional Record, and Not Just For Young Moderns.......2007-02-04
With a reunited, confident and revitalized Silverchair having unleashed yesterday the fevered, strident yet bright force of nature that is "Straight Lines" (merely the fifth of five stellar singles - the others, "Across The Night", "Luv Your Life","Somewhere Down The Barrel" and "Young Man, Old Man....." - from the distinctive pen of Daniel Johns, in fact five of this young century's finest) and its accompanying video to chairpage - the band's website, it's instructive to revisit The Dissociatives, Johns' project with friend Paul Mac, Danger Mouse to Daniel's Cee-Lo in a sense. "Straight Lines" is an audacious further step in Silverchair's evolution, seen largely through the eyes and epiphanic experiences of Johns that are ably supported by bassist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies, but his collaboration with Mac was an important proving ground for the new (somewhat streamlined?) model, preparing more receptive 'Chair fans for the forthcoming effort Young Modern and what will likely be a considerable change in musical direction.
The duo's eponymous debut and only studio release to date mostly eschews the carbon-steel, occasionally atonal rhythm guitar slabs that have been for so long Silverchair's stock-in-trade but the band itself really began to move away from on Diorama, its justly-lauded last album, to arrive at something both graceful and grand, less bombastic. Like the late virtuoso Jeff Buckley, Johns isn't given to indulging in intricate solos - changes in texture and instrumental focus are merely used as dynamic accents to powerfully punctuate songs - and has become far better at his songcraft as a result, nominally mentored by arranger extraordinaire Van Dyke Parks of Smile fame. Their favored source for inspiration is late Seventies and early Eighties progressive pop from artists such as the Electric Light Orchestra (evidenced most thoroughly in leadoff single "Somewhere Down The Barrel") Supertramp (second single "Young Man, Old Man....." is heavily evocative of Breakfast In America and The Wall) as well as Split Enz, Tears For Fears (a shiver-inducing but gently strummed, intermittent single note not so immediately calls to mind "Pale Shelter") and Drama-era Yes.
But Dissociatives production values are still very much associated with the present; generous sprinkles, patinas and washes of clearly modern electronic tones color their soundscapes throughout. This approach makes the truly haunting Beach Boys and Radiohead echoes of first track "We're Much Preferred Customers" seem entirely logical, a more fully realized blend (similarly used to outstanding effect on "Straight Lines") than the tenuous suspension one might expect with such an attempt, and it's primarily the 26-year-old Johns that makes it work so effortlessly, with an at-once ethereal and soulful, even bluesy, voice, not unlike Buckley's lower register, Sting at his most forceful (again, most noticeably on Young Modern's infectious lead single) and, believe it or not, Terence Trent D'Arby in places. As Daniel says in a Dissociatives promotional interview, the prevailing mood is refreshingly whimsical - and with a touch of melancholy, as Mac is quick to add - especially felt in "Forever And A Day", a lonesome rhumba, and closer "Sleep Well Tonight".
While it would be slightly premature to judge Young Modern solely upon "Straight Lines", it couldn't be a more effective clarion call to inform the world that Australia's apparent favorite sons are back and they are continuing to evolve - dramatically so. It's also worth remembering that, five years ago, Daniel Johns was so crippled by degenerative arthritis he could barely be out of bed, let alone play guitar or tour, for extended periods of time. "Straight Lines" is assuredly a multi-format Top Ten smash if a savvier Stateside label can make amends for truly egregious lapses in Diorama-related marketing decisions. I haven't been able to stop playing the kinetic clip for this song (and cautionary tale, perhaps) of resurrection, and oh how I want to sing it along with the band soon. Daniel, Ben, Chris - that world may be yours if you want it. WE ARE READY.
Refreshing and original.......2006-02-28
Purchased the c.d. after seeing them perform live on "On Demand". I was really impressed with their live performance. The disc doesn't have quite the punch as the live renditions but it's equally great. I will definitely be buying their live d.v.d. Hopefully we'll see a second album from them.
A breath of fresh air!.......2006-01-24
This album is a breath of fresh air! Daniel Johns does an incredible job with both singing and song writing. SilverChair fans who love Johns' somewhat spontaneous/deep lyrics will love this album. It is vitally important that you remember that this is NOT SilverChair though! While SilverChair has morphed over the past 7-10 years, they are NOTHING like this. This is a happy and inventive mix of techno, rock and pop. If you are looking for an upbeat album to listen to when you aren't in the mood for blazing guitars, screaming vocals, double base drums, or Tool clones (they are everywhere today) this is one to check out.
Amazing!.......2005-11-13
This is my first review for Amazon.com, and what not a better way than to begin than with a review of The Dissociatives?
Simply put, this album blew me away. I love Daniel's songwriting and uncanny knack for catchy melodies, and Paul has contributed so much to just make this album (and the band, really) what it is. I just bought this record today, but I know that I will most definitely be keeping this one close at hand for a looong time to come. I love all the songs, though "Somewhere Down the Barrel," "Lifting the Veil from the Braille," and "Thinking in Reverse" are my favorite tracks.
As has been stated, this does not sound like Silverchair (especially not like Frogstomp-to-Neon Ballroom-era Silverchair, though it is different from Diorama as well), so if you're looking for that, you're not going to find it here. What you are going to find is an amazing band with a lot of potential, even if they just started as a side project.
The record is a great combination of Johns' lyrics and rock sensibilities with Mac's expertise in electronic beats and whatnot. Definitely worth the money!
