The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

frat boy stuff? you should be ashamed!.......2004-08-21

"foxy music" has to be one of the most unique and jaw dropping albums i have heard in quite a while. the experimentation and unoriginality is astounding. i couldn't believe my ears when i heard this album. every track is different unlike other albums out there.

i have read some reviews that have labeled this album as frat boy music. frat boy music? FRAT BOY MUSIC!?! this is far from anything that could be labeled as frat boy music. whatever that means? and i have an idea. it seems like whoever deems this as frat music needs to reexamine this album and probably their own collection because it seems they wouldn't know creativity and experimentation, along with rhythm and groove, if it came and slapped them in their face.

this album is full of everything that makes an album GREAT. musicianship. creativeness. unfrightened of experimentation. uniqueness. groove. harmony. rhythm. and yes, you could probably even dance to it, even though i won't be able to because i will be too busy trying to discover all the rich layers throughout each song.

for anyone who is buying this, get ready to have your mind blown. for anyone considering buying it, cherish it and get some more. for those who don't like something original, go to search and type in N'Sync.

I picked this up on the recommendation of other reviewers here at amazon. What an incredible disappointment. They may have studied their record collections well enough but the end result is nothing more than a collection of really unoriginal, posturing "groove rock" that's no better than some ivy league Grand Cherokee ski bum act. Simply awful.

I Just Stumbled On This One.......2002-03-12

So I saw this CD in a store and read the back and I thought it looked pretty cool. I decided to buy it and was completely amazed at what I heard. It has a really cool electric jazz 70's sound with a 21st century edge to it. Definetely worth getting if you are looking for something new and a lot of fun to listen to.

Following up their CD of remixes, this is a 12 song CD of all new Mushroom songs and recordings. The band now features maverick trumpeter Jon Birdsong (known for his performances with Beck and Beth Orton), percussionist Dave Mihaly, Carroll Ashby on trombone, and guitarist Josh Pollock. Long time Mushroom members: drummer Patrick O'Hearn, guitar / sax / fluteman Erik Pearson, keyboard whiz Michael Holt and bassist Kurt Statham remain. Also aboard are some special guests including Hammond organ master Michael Bluestein (Will Bernard & Motherbug).

Recently profiled in Down Beat, who compared Mushroom to Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and Miles Davis' Big Fun album. The band has also received praise from Mojo, who said: "Some of the best space jams heard since Loop and The Spacemen 3". Great sounding accompaniment piece to Pet Sounds.......2005-07-17

This album is great to listen to if you, like me, have listened to Pet Sounds millions of times and want a new variation on it. The Angry String Quartet does a great job recreating this amazing work of art, and brings to light the orchestral genius of Brian Wilson's musical and vocal arrangements. The Quartet extend most of the songs, and it is a bit awkward getting used to at first ( having listened to the original songs so many times), but in the end, it is a pleasant change.

"The String Quartet Tribute to the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds" is an interesting, and ultimately, satisfying listen. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to hear Pet Sounds in a different light or would like to understand why so many people have found Brian Wilson's music to be utter genius...and just about anyone else.

MORE PRESSURE...STRAIGHT TO THE HEAD: In celebration of fifty fabulous reggae reissues, Pressure Sounds freshens up the format a little bit with this great collection of reggae rarities. Rather than focussing on a particular producer, or artist, or studio, or whatever, MORE PRESSURE just cuts straight to the chase with a crucial selection of vintage sides that can't have seen the light of day since they were originally pressed up, probably in negligible quantities anyway, back in the seventies and early eighties. That's not to say that this is a collection of pointless obscurities - far from it. In fact, MORE PRESSURE unearths long lost recordings from all-time reggae greats like Michael Rose, Barrington Levy, Dillinger, Cornell Campbell and an early incarnation of Black Uhuru; but it's actually the lesser-known names that provide most of the highlights here. Ras Ibuna's opening DIVERSE DOCTRINE is pure, pure roots magic, and the version side - produced by engineer emeritus, Karl Pitterson - is even better. The intense pressure doesn't let up any on Bongo Gene's superb SKYJACK and SKYJACK VERSION, while I Kong's spiritual THE WAY IT IS induces the kind of shivers that only come when roots reggae really hits the spot. It's hard to imagine how the Pressure Sounds people might be able to improve on this killer collection, except perhaps that Barrington Levy's excellent THE WINNER (presented in full-length discomix) would sound even better alongside other early eighties material - hey, now there's a nice idea for MORE PRESSURE VOL. 2!

As always, there are informative sleeve notes, quality art work, and all the other stuff that you'd associate with this exemplary reissue outfit. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, Pressure Sounds. Here's to many more!

Only one track really stands out..........2007-03-03

I only bought this CD for the reissue of The Left Banke's "And One Day" which is completely stellar and stands out from the rest of the songs on this CD.

I was not impressed with the other songs. The first two tracks are simply awful, others are kind of ok, but nothing special. The booklet is of nice quality and has some cool info about the bands in it.

If you are a fan of garage/psych rock, which I am not, you will probably like this CD. In my opinion though, Bam Caruso would have been better off just reissuing the entire Strangers On A Train aka Voices Calling LP from The Left Banke and then just adding some bonus tracks.

Great compilation from a great label........2002-02-25

Bam Caruso were one of the pioneering reissue labels before (largely) disappearing in the late nineties. This CD culls various material from their (seemingly unending!) releases, and manages to be one of those record label samplers that surprises with its quality.

To be sure, there's an awful lot of stuff that isn't represented, with Bam's compilations (especially Rubble and Circus Days) being largely ignored. But some of the treasures unearthed are remarkable, with the absolute jaw-drop-inducing gem probably being And One Day, from the Left Banke's never-released-on-CD reunion album. My god, I had no idea that this track could sound this *good*.

Record label samplers are often a mixed bag, but with Bam Caruso, it's pretty hard to go wrong.
