From Amazon.co.uk
Grinderman is the sound of indie rock legends growing old disgracefully, and that is by no means a criticism. From the opening rant of "Get It On," this is an album with all the menace of an angry drunk, dripping with anger and testosterone (as the surfeit of facial hair in the band's interior photo will attest). It could even be the sound of Nick Cave's midlife crisis, but it doesn't matter, because Grinderman rocks. It's the sound of four musicians having a grand time, turning the volume up to 11 and really cutting loose. For that reason, it's the more upbeat tracks here that are probably the best: "Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars)" with its driving electric organ, the primal urgency of "Depth Charge Ethel," and the strutting album closer "Love Bomb." After all the po-faced seriousness he's displayed in recent years, it's good to know that Cave has rediscovered his sense of humour: "I cleaned the sheets on my bed, I combed the hairs across my head, I sucked in my gut and still she said, 'I don't want to,'" he sings on "No Pussy Blues," with his tongue firmly in cheek (amongst other places). Simply put, Grinderman is a hoot. --Ted Kord
Album Description
The story of Grinderman begins within the working processes of another band: Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. At the start of 2004, when Nick Cave took a small team of Bad Seeds members -- violinist Warren Ellis, bassist Martyn Casey and drummer Jim Sclavunos -- off to the tiny Misère studio in Paris for a songwriting session, they effectively established a new band. The small combo configuration of Nick, Warren, Marty and Jim had its public debut in a showcase performance to promote the Bad Seeds Nocturama album; the foursome continued working in this streamlined format, getting together frequently for Nick Cave "solo" tours. Born of babbling lyrics hatched from Bosch eggshells in the Hyde-bound apocalyptic margins of the Cave brain, the Grinderman sound is an instinctual yawlp that also resurrects the demons of each musician's past: the trashcan proselytising of Birthday Party -era Nick; Sclavunos' late 70s New York no-wave noise wisdom; Martyn Casey's ominous Triffids bass reverb; plus Ellis' avant-garde soundtrack work and his teenage love of Black Sabbath. Destination: Out! Grinderman sound different from everyone, including themselves. As Memphis Slim put it back in 1941, "While everything is quiet and easy/ Mr. Grinder can have his way." It's a new day. God help you all.
Customer Reviews:
Get It On.......2007-07-22
Nick Cave is in an unfortunate position; his past accomplishments were so great that anything he does now that isn't stellar is a letdown. His work with The Birthday Party is essential, and his catalogue with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds is monumental. So what happens when Cave starts a "new" band like Grinderman? He risks disappointment.
Grinderman is not a far step from Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Which, considering the personnel, is not surprising. Each member of Grinderman has also worked as a Bad Seed and some of these tracks that appear on this self-titled debut could easily be reworked for the next Bad Seeds release. "I Don't Need You (To Set Me Free)" and "Man in the Moon", for example, both unfold in a shape and style similar to past Bad Seed songs.
Still, in spite of the shared elements, Grinderman is somewhat distinct from the group's other band. It is rougher, it is more disheveled, and it is less compromising. The guitar playing, or rather, the lack of guitar playing is particularly messy. Nick Cave plays the instrument himself and he is far from a virtuoso. Every pluck reinforces this. His playing is awkward and clumsy. And yet, his crude fingers also give this band added personality.
Take "No Pussy Blues", the album's first single, for instance. It begins with a driving bassline and steady, banging beats and then erupts with a spill of loud, confrontational guitar. The gawky instrumentation works well. When Cave starts to sing, his charismatic voice carries the track even further. "No Pussy Blues" is peppered with his rugged sarcasm. Lyrically, the song deals with failed sexual advances and the resulting frustrations. "I sent her every type of flower / I played her a guitar by the hour / I patted her revolting little Chihuahua / But still she just didn't want to". Every syllable is delivered with a tongue-in-cheek dark humor and smirking wry attitude.
"No Pussy Blues" is fast. It is propelled by its quick tempo, and other tracks follow a similar path. The raw excellence of "Get It On", the driving fun of "Depth Charge Ethel", the bending wines of "Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars)", and rocking simplicity of "Love Bomb" all tumble forward on a throbbing bass and smacking rhythm.
Not every track relies on speed, however. "Electric Alice", which is one of the album's highlights, squirms along Warren Ellis's distorted violin strings. Voice and organ alternate their places at the song's forefront while bass and drums circle and contain the music. The song wanders and meanders blindly through psychedelic ambience.
Grinderman revisits the gritty attitude that Cave had in the 1980s, but misses the elegance. The music of Grinderman is often muddied and at least half of their songs shimmy along a sloppy path. Like an oil stain on the floor of a dirty garage, Grinderman is thick, dark, and ugly.
An Explosion in Angst.......2007-07-10
This one's for all the angry, frustrated, aggrieved souls who, knowing slightly better than to act on impulse and commit some egregious violation of either the legal or moral sort (preferably both at once), just need a good splash of hard rock and roll for cleansing. This is my first introduction to Nick Cave, and dare I say I'm all tingly with adrenaline after listening to `Grinderman'. For me, it's a nearly perfect melding of Iggy Pop and Tom Waits, where punk meets dark, folky blues. This is a loud and commanding record. Other reviewers have used the words vitriolic, raw, primal, vicious, and seething...and rightly so. That about says it all, but the newbie like myself might get caught into thinking that this is a one-dimensional album. Not so. Looking more deeply, there is ominous substance here. It evokes the creepy feeling that this is what you'll feel when you finally surrender your youth. All that angst and fury released into a gratifying but nevertheless pointless display of over-indulgent self-expression. But what Cave and Co. do is soak it all in, bask in one's powerlessness and thereby getting all the more pissed off. The result then, is an explosion of some awfully good and therapeutic rock. My favorites are: `Get it on', `No Pussy Blues', `Go Tell..', `Honey Bee', and especially `Love Bomb'. This is Rock and Roll with no consequence. We need more of this.
A Welcome Departure.......2007-06-21
As much as I like the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, their sound was getting to be a bit repetitous at times (to me, at least). It was about time for a new direction and Grinderman delivers. A few of the songs don't wear well (eg. no pussy blues), but several are sure to become classics in the Nick Cave musical archive. I would have given this release 5 stars, but I think that there is room for improvement. By the way...great guitar work from the man himself.
An Entertaining Departure.......2007-06-14
Knowing well the music of Nick Cave, when I saw the lewdly postured monkey on the cover of Grinderman, I knew I was in for an entertaining departure from his recent musical path. I had heard all the hype that preceded its release, but when I first heard it, it sounded very different from what I was led to expect.
I agree with the reviewer who said that one must listen many times to any album by Nick Cave before making a decision on its quality. His talent is so deep, and his writing often so complex, that his work rarely reveals itself fully on first listen. Much of the music press ballyhooed Grinderman as a return to the days of the Birthday Party. The song No Pussy Blues was widely touted as one of Cave's greatest. I think the press was wrong on both counts.
First of all, while Grinderman is raw and primal, it is hardly a return to the unstructured sound of the Birthday Party. Grinderman may be rough, but it is definitely not the sound of a bunch of musicians trying to establish their niche. Its the sound of a bunch of seasoned musicians having a blast! As for No Pussy Blues, I think it is one of the weaker songs on the CD even though the title may have been a draw for some. Cave seemed to be really stretching to make the lyrics fit, but in the end it sounds so desperate and unromantic that there's no wonder that he's got the "no pussy blues".
There are some great songs here as well. I like Electric Alice; Depth Charge Ethel with its sound sometimes evocative of Deep Purple's Machine Head days; (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free; When My Love Comes Down; and what I think is the album's best song, the hard-driving Love Bomb.
Because Cave has made so many albums superior to this, I can't possibly tag Grinderman with five stars. But it still is worth owning if you are a fan of Nick Cave on any level or you just like your music raw and rowdy. I'll certainly be playing it whenever the mood so demands.
energetic.......2007-05-29
An energetic return to Nick Cave's early styles, akin the old Birthday Party work.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-06-15
I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.
Awesome.......2007-06-12
This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.
Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03
Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.
Complete?.......2007-04-07
This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.
Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03
I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

This is an outstanding CD. It captures the best of Chaka Khan and is a must have album.
Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan, I've Veal For You, I Think Olive You.......2006-10-15
The Very Best Of Rufus, Featuring Chaka Khan, is like the little girl with the little curl right in the middle of her forehead - when it's good, it's very, very good, but when it's bad, it's horrid. Don't let that stop you, though, with Chaka Khan; the highs are so high they redeem the lows.
At 5' 1" tall, Chaka Khan is the mouse that roared; from Aretha Franklin to Gladys Knight to Stephanie Mills it would be hard to find another female R&B, soul singer who can match her for sheer power. No matter how much smoke there may be in the air, Khan's voice pierces like a laser. There is something fun, even endearing, about watching someone so small, with hair exploding around her head like a mushroom cloud, delivering such a mighty payload.
Backed by the raw groove of Rufus, that roundhouse delivery really shines on tracks like Tell Me Something Good and You Got The Love. These two tracks alone are worth the price of the CD. Sweet Thing, a little more mellow, is almost as good as they are, while At Midnight has infectious, almost delirious drive. After that, things get shakier.
Khan's primary problem is that, while she's a fabulous belter, she's not really a singer as such. (To see what I mean, check out Echoes Of An Era, where she fronts an all-star jazz line-up and attempts standards - with unsatisfactory results.)
Because she brought no particular vision or point of view to the table, Khan was forced to ride the waves of musical fashion, and had the extreme bad fortune of hitting her peak just as disco was defoliating the landscape. Consequently, much of her output was little more than pointless screeching superimposed onto relentless dance beats. (Stop the madness!)
This CD captures Khan during that brief time in her career when everything lined up correctly. It was short.... but it was sweet.
Rufus & Chaka, Simple the best!!!!.......2005-09-15
I recently brought this album because I'm a big Chaka Khan fan, I think she's one of the best soul singers EVER!!! I also brought this album because I heard some of the songs on the radio and other artist covered or sampled their songs. When I heard the whole album, I was so glad I brought it. I think every song is amazing, the group is great and Chaka is just Chaka, what more can you say, INCREDIBLE!! I wish there were more tracks on it and one of my favorite Rufus & Chaka Khan songs called "Everlasting Love". After listening to this album and knowing a little history about the group, I think that Rufus was one of the funkiest and soulful groups of all time. I hope one day they get their proper due and respect, which they so deserve, and will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. For those who like Chaka Khan as a solo artist need to purchased cd this and see how it all began.

When Smyth had her first hit with the band Scandal in 1982 with the peppy kiss-off "Goodbye to You," MTV was still in its infancy and Alanis Morissette was not long out of diapers. Not exactly the stereotypical groundbreaker, the New York-born Smyth nonetheless helped make the pre-Madonna '80s safe for women in rock, paving the way for such hit makers as Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and the whole Lilith Fair flock. While this career-spanning retrospective is a hit-and-miss affair, it boasts plenty of enjoyable, chewy slabs of pop-flavored hard rock. Smyth's top 10 smashes--the anthemic "The Warrior" and the power-ballad duet with Don Henley, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough"--are the star attractions, but some of her lesser-known material proves just as impressive. The rousing "Heartache Heard Around the World" is a welcome blast from the (circa 1987) past, and "Wish I Were You," a tune also available on the Armageddon movie soundtrack, shows that Smyth isn't ready to be relegated to the oldies-rock circuit just yet. --Michael Evans

Patty Smyth Greatest Hits review.......2007-02-12
I bought this CD for a particular song (Goodbye to You) but there are a number of songs on the CD I like as well (there are also some I don't really care for).
Overall, I liked this CD.
Patty Smyth .......2006-11-06
I found the CD to be disappointing due to the fact that there was only one song I really liked on it. I was expecting more and did not get what I hoped for. I would not recommend the CD further....
Wonderful tunes.......2006-07-26
Great tunes - refreshing and energizing. I think I'll look for some Joan Jett music now.
Very Good.......2006-04-09
I have been a fan of Patty for many years, and I've always felt that she's a huge talent with mostly mediocre material. This CD is the perfect one to own for Patty fans, as it features all of her very best work plus that of Scandal.
WHAT!!! No "Never Enough".......2005-11-14
Sorry, but to exclude "Never Enough" is criminal. One of her most powerful tunes and the record label blunders and skips it. Not sure, but my guess is that this release does not utilize the full 80 minute time limit either. Boneheads!
When will the music industry get a clue and actually include all of her hits (maybe an expanded edition is on the horizon?).
Still good to see a compilation of hers out there, especially when the Scandal EP and her 1st solo album "Never Enough" seem to be out of print.
Keep the faith Patty! Hope to see new music from you soon!

Small Price and Great Music.......2007-03-11
I purchased this as a present and he loves it. A nice music mix. If you like german band music/octoberfest music - this is the one.
Great Music in the Spirit of Oktoberfest.......2006-08-01
As manager of "The Oktoberfest Webring," I am always on the lookout for CD's of good Oktoberfest music. In this particular CD, all of the songs are played by the German Air Force Band and are taken from another CD entitled, "More German Military Marches & Polkas - Vol. II." As you might expect, most of the selections are not--strictly speaking--Oktoberfest numbers. However, they are played and sung in the light-hearted, breezy manner typical of Oktoberfest. In addition, the band and singers give top-notch performances. So, as a CD of Oktoberfest-like music, I give this product high marks. It would probably make great background music for any Oktoberfest.
The Soundtrack to Chubby Lou's Life........2005-12-20
Every Oktober (that's German for "October") Chubby Lou throws his annual Oktoberfest celebration. It's quite well known in the south, as we go on a stint of "bier trinken" (that's german for drinking beer). Seeing Chubby Lou in his Lederhosen is quite possibly the greatest thing ever, it's more memorable than your first born child. His stomach sticks out and he doesn't care, he dances the night away with his chalice full of beer. Everyone makes it out, the whole sizzle chest crew (big frank, cheese grits and lupus fury) we all have superior dancing skills than anyone attending the party. Chubby Lou loves oktoberfest so much that we have to tell him that it's over, otherwise he won't stop celebrating, he once celebrated 3 months straight and lost his job, got evicted, and his car was repocessed, we all had good laughs after that. Chubby Lous mom holds down the cooking, nothing but schnitzel, bratwurst and sauerkraut, pommes frites (that's german for french fries) all night long, she loves it. The track that really puts the party in 6th gear is " Komm Und Tanz" we played this song and danced for 3 hours, the police were called to break the famous shin-dig up, but they always end up joining the party, who can resist fine ladies, german beer, and non stop polka tanzen (that's polka dancing in german). We usually round off the end of the celebration with a 6 hour tribute to Hasselhoff, and score like Robin Yount on 3-2 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Anyways, I hope you see now that this is a mandatory oktoberfest keep-sake.
Great CD!.......2000-08-23
This is a wonderful collection of festive German songs, great for listening to at parties, dinners, or your own Oktoberfest!

"Taste the culture, know who you are," exhorts a voice in the opening seconds of The Carnival. While Fugees mastermind Wyclef sets a high goal for his first solo album, essentially a follow-up to the Brooklyn hip-hoppers' multiplatinum The Score, he never succumbs to feel-goodism or preachiness while traveling the songlines. Including everything from over-the-top operatic scatting to Bee Gees samples and Celia Cruz as part of its rhythm nation, The Carnival proves that, "Killing Me Softly" or no, the rapper/producer is far from losing his knack for mad fun and games. And, indeed, if you're not careful, you may end up learning something: witness the ballad "Gone Till November," a drug runner's unflinching lament. --Rickey Wright

Classic, Classic, Classic!!!.......2007-01-10
To many people, the Fugees were the quintessential rap trio comprised of Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras. While the seperation of this supergroup revealed each member's exceptional artistry....who can forget the Miseducation of Lauren Hill....Wyclef out did himself on this album. As hip hop albums go, Carnival can be viewed as one of the Hip Hop Masterpieces of the decade!
Incidentally, I classify the "Miseducation..." as one of the R&B Mastepieces!
Good Album, Shows The Talent of Wyclef.......2006-07-06
I thought this was a good solo album from Wyclef that presents some good songs to listen to. Definately get "We Trying To Stay Alive." It is a great song with a catchy beat from the original Staying Alive. Good Listen
Aiight.......2006-07-02
This carnival gets a little borin' sometimes. If you ever been to a carnival, when you got off a wild ride, then next thing you know you waitin on a long a** line that just kills your fun until the next ride. That's what this album does. Clef hits you in the head wit a bangin track, then kills your mood with a completely unnecessary skit. And its after almost every song. And thats annoyin to me cause I hate skits alot. If you gon' rap n**** then rap. I had this album for like 7 years and I can't listen to it all the way through for that reason. Puttin the skits aside it is pretty solid. And next to the crap pollutin the airwaves these days, it stands a lot higher.
Wicked lots of fun.......2006-04-05
I borrowed this c.d. from a friend of mine, and have never given it back. This c.d. sat in my 6 disk player (in the car) for a year. Not only are the songs so good that you have them stuck in your head all day but the court thing is funny too. I love how it almost takes you around the world in styles. Spanish, french, carribean. I don't know any other talented musician who can do that, except for Wyclef. This is another c.d. that you enjoy listing to the words as well as the great music. Wyclef is a very talented artist, and has the ability to make something beautiful and fun at the same time.
Very Eclectic Lp 2 Say da Least.......2006-01-17
I love The Fugees & Wyclef and admire them as artists man but this lp is the gap between "The Score" and all their solos and "The Carnival" sets the bar pretty high for most Fugee solos. this lp may look uncohesive but it for the most is pretty good. what sparks my attention is the attention to detail and humor used to poke fun at the scene and even if you pick it up today you begin to remember wyclef is a emcee and artist second and he upholds hip hop's honesty and integrity very well. he never forgot wehre he came from man. overall i'm give this cd a 4.5 almost a classic but it was missing to me a vital part of non-skipable stuff and with all the interludes detract from being a classic hip hop record.

Not for fans of the music in the movie ... .......2007-07-21
Sure, maybe some of the songs in this collection were tacked on in edited forms into the closing credits, but the majority of the music in the film is not here. Great tracks by Rachid Taha (off his Made in Medina album) figure prominently through out and aren't here. Jasmine Tabatabai not only contributes a memorable song to the film, but can be seen performing it live in an early club scene. Also not on the cd.
If you like the darker, richer, exotic music of the film, pick up albums by Taha and Tabatabai.
If you like mediocre compilations of absolutely horrifying covers of once great songs (I actually got physically ill hearing the versions of Venus in Furs and Killing Moon) then maybe pick this up.
The one or two decent tracks (ok, one) like Collide's just aren't worth the buy in.
The art of soundtracking and film scoring has reached an all time low here.
This album is way better than the film..........2007-02-03
Since the first review focused on what they didn't know about the bands, I'll point out some of the acts:
Tre Lux is Tina Root of Switchblade Symphony, one of the biggest Dark Wave bands of the 90's.
Shiny Toy Guns are huge right now, just played Leno a month ago.
Collide are one of the bigger bands of the goth/electro scene.
Bow Wow Wow...even the other reviewer knew who they are.
Sparklemotion had a hit on itunes from the Napoleon Dynamite Sountrack.
New Skin are a new English band produced by one of the guys who produced Depeche Mode and the Cure.
but whatever - the point is the album is really good - there's only one song I wasn't crazy about and for a soundtrack, that's saying a lot.
I can't say the same for the film...but oh well.
Yet Another 80's Mostly Lame New Wave Cover Song Collection by Mostly Unknowns.......2007-01-28
I get the impression that cover song collections are quite the rage in Hollywood Movie circles when dealing with 'troubled' movie productions. It's cheap in that all the artists cannot command any upfront cash for their appearance. It smacks of indy-cred to get these artists, mostly electro-goth types, together. Too bad most of the cover versions are only mildly interesting. I also suspect that the soundtrack CD will be of more interest in a years time than the movie will...Why the producers of the film decided to so radically transform the book into a forced-copy of 'Underworld' escapes me, I guess filming for so cheap in Eastern Europe was the main reason. Too bad, I really enjoyed the book. Buy the book instead of buying this CD or watching the movie.
Except for Bow Wow Wow (glad to see they are struggling along still, but this IS DEFINITELY NOT their best work), almost all of these bands are probably unknown to 99.99% of the listening public. I have heard of Collide before this, kinda synthy darkwave band, very enjoyable, please go buy their other work ;) Almost of these songs lack the excitement and punch of the originals, why bother then making effort? I guess if I must, the first three songs are pleasant enough to listen to and I kind of like the Collide number as well...The rest can be safely deleted if you decide to convert these tracks to MP3s and just keep the aforementioned four tracks.

Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03
I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!
just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09
loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.
Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06
Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.
Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04
I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.
Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05
Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.
